OUR MISSION: TO LIVE AS JESUS TEACHES
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. We come to adore
Jesus’ real presence in Eucharist. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says the Eucharist is “the
source and summit of Christian life. The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries
and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it”
(CCC #1324).
What makes Catholicism unique is not the dogmas of Mary or the infallibility of the Church, but
the doctrine of Real Presence in the Eucharist. Because of this doctrine, many people have left the Church, for
they did not find the Real Presence. But also because of this doctrine, many people have converted to Catholicism
among which we find Gerard Manley Hopkins, G.K. Chesterton, Blessed Cardinal Newman, Scott Hahn, and many
others. They all just wanted to taste the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. God wanted to enter into our
lives and the best way to do this is to become food for the nourishment of our body and soul.
So let us be mindful of Jesus’ real presence in the bread and wine each time we go to Mass and receive
communion. There are four types of people going to church. 1- a tourist: those who come by to take some
pictures, see the church and the landscape out of their curiosity. 2-an architect: these poeple go to church to see
how the church was built, what kind of material was it made of. 3- a circus goer: these people consider the Mass
as a show: music show, talk show. Since it is a show, the possibility exists that there will be a boring show and a
good show. If the show does not meet their taste, they get bored and leave the Church for Protestant
denominations. 4- a true Christian: those who believe and recognize Jesus’ real presence in the Euchrist. They see
Jesus running the show at Mass, therefore the Mass is never boring.
In fact, there is no such thing as a boring Mass. There are only boring people at Mass: either a boring preacher or
boring participants. At Mass, the homily could be in a language I dont understand, the music could be completely
out of tune, there could be kids running around screaming at the top of their lungs, throwing crayons and eating
snacks or eating crayons and throwing snacks. That’s ok because the moment when I receive the Euchsrist is the
most crucial moment of my week. It is a moment of grace and transformation. No matter how good the music or
preaching is elsewhere, I cant leave the Eucharist. I will not leave Jesus.
Let us be minful of the Real Presence of our Lord in the Eucharist. Each time we receive communion, we are
receiving someone, not something. Therefore, we must receive Him with respect, reverence and awe.
O Sacrament most Holy, O Sacrament Divine, All praise and all thanksgiving, Be every moment Thine.
Congratulations to Brother Matthew Murray who was ordained Deacon on Saturday, May 28 at
Mission San Jose in Fremont. Please keep Deacon Matthew and his family in your prayers.
Fr. Thi Hoang
DON’T FORGET TO JOIN US
Tuesday, May 31, we gather in the Basilica at 7:00pm
and then process around the block while praying the
rosary and singing in different languages to honor our
Mother Mary on the feast of the Visitation and as the
month of May
comes to a
close.
WELCOME THE STRANGER
Our little refugee family, arriving this week, are being put up in a hotel until we have secured a
rental for them. Our eager volunteers are excited to meet them and offer them all the help we can
to adjust to our country. Thanks to the four churches in Alameda we gathered over $6000 over the weekend. Thank you
to all who donated! With that we can begin to provide for them and create a friendly home. Picture them on a long flight
with their 11 month old child, not an easy journey as all parents know, anticipating a new place and new friends, all of
us. We have learned that they have friends in the Afghan community who will also help them adjust and settle. A happy
crowd went to the airport to greet them, bearing gifts, flowers and good wishes, and even a baby gift from our
teens. Thanks for all your prayers, more news later.
REMINDING ALL PARISHIONERS AND YOUR FAMILIES/
FRIENDS:
Listen for Life's "Notes for Nourishment" 2by2 Sundays series continues to bring world-renowned artists
right here to the parish one Sunday afternoon each month!
Donations collected at each (free-will) one-hour concert program help raise funds to benefit organizations
that nourish our community. April's concert (featuring Chinese guzheng master Winnie Wong) collected
very appreciated funds for the Alameda Point Collaborative, and the program in May (featuring Israeli
soprano Ronit Widmann-Levy) benefitted the Alameda Food Bank. Thank you so much to all those who
have attended and donated!
Don't miss the next two programs:
Sunday June 12 @ 2pm will feature a Bay Area favorite, opera baritone Zachary Gordin, with pianist
Donna Stoering, and the collected donations will benefit Project Open Hand.
Sunday July 10 @ 2pm will feature Palestinian oud master and vocalist Naser Musa (the oud is a Middle
-Eastern instrument of the guitar/lute family). Naser is a strong Arab Christian/Catholic who travels to
highly dangerous places of persecution in the Middle East to bring them hope and healing through his
voice and music. He also works with refugees/immigrants and strives, as a member of our Listen for Life
projects, to build bridges of peace across various cultures.
Therefore we felt it would be very fitting if this particular concert collects donations for the "Welcome The
Stranger" program here in Alameda, to benefit the refugee family being hosted through our Catholic
community.
SO - Please, please come! Invite your friends, enjoy a beautiful instrument and artist whom you might
not get many opportunities to hear "live" in this area, and help our refugee family in the process!
CALLING ALL GARDNERS
Do you like to garden? Do you like to trim and plant flowers? If
you do, the garden spaces around the Basilica and Rectory need

together to give our gardens the tender loving care they
deserve. For details, contact Rich Davis at
[email protected] or 510-305-4148.

This month we are introducing a new and exciting
way for you to support our parish offertory and second collections: Faith Direct. Faith Direct
enables parishioners to make your Church contributions through either direct debit from your
checking/savings account or through your credit/debit card. No more writing checks or searching
for envelopes on the way out the door. Now you can apply the convenience of direct debit to your
parish offerings in much the same way as you may now use it to make your mortgage, car or tuition
payments.
Faith Direct also offers you personalized offertory cards to replace your envelopes for the collection
basket.

SAINT JOSEPH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ART SHOW 2016
The annual SJES Art Show and Root Beer Float Social, held the evening of Monday May 16, was once again an amazing community event. The Art Show is hosted and put together by the Art Docent program (part of the PTG). The Art
Show displays over 600 pieces of art from every student at SJES. The students do an incredible job and really enjoy the
Art Docent Program. The Art Docent program, coordinated by Tony Steur, is run by Parent Volunteers with great
support from our Art Teacher Ms. Jessica Moore. We would like to thank all of the Class Art Docents and all the program volunteers who do the in-class projects and put on the Art Show. We would also like to thank all of our student
volunteers for their
assistance in prepping the
Art Show and serving the
Root Beer Floats under the
leadership of Andrew Fowler
and Natalie Langford. And a
huge thank you to all those
who attended.

DAY.
Memorial Day, originally called
Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in
service of the United States of America.
Over two dozen cities and towns claim
to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. While Waterloo
N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial
Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it’s
difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day.

INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT OF
OAKLAND DIOCESE SCHOOLS
Father Larry Young, currently pastor of
St. Patrick Parish in Rodeo, has been
announced as interim superintendent of the
Oakland Diocese’s school system.
“Father Young’s service as interim superintendent will allow us to move forward decisively with our
vision to transform our schools as centers of faith and
knowledge,” Bishop Barber said in making the announcement.
The Diocese of Oakland is conducting a national search
for a permanent superintendent. That committee is
headed by Father George Mockel, Vicar General for the
Diocese. The Diocese of Oakland serves two counties in
the East Bay region, Alameda and Contra Costa, and has
nine high schools and 44 elementary and middle schools.
