I am filled with so much anticipation for my first assignment as parochial vicar of Father George Alengadan and of St. Joseph parish community. It must be the same anticipation in our Sunday Gospel that the seventy disciples felt when they received the “marching order” from our Lord to go to every town and pave the way for the coming of the Kingdom of God in Jesus Christ. Seventy was a significant number in the ancient biblical times. You may recall that Moses had chosen seventy elders as helpers and leaders in guiding Israel through the dessert. The Jewish Sanhedrin that governed Israel as a nation was composed of seventy members. The main purpose and tasks therefore of the seventy disciples were to speak in the name of Jesus and to minister his people in his authority. Jesus further gave the seventy specific directives on how to carry out their ministry. They must not settle down, but must always be on the move to go and to serve. They must be missionaries who proclaim the Kingdom of God without fear, give their lives selflessly in charity and in peace, and live in simplicity, i.e., in utter dependence on God. This, I believe, is the same “marching order” that I am called to follow and ordained to pour out my entire priestly life. I beg you, then, my new St. Joseph family to remember me in your supplications to God that as your new baby priest, I may love the priesthood to the end, sustain the grateful awareness of the gift I undeservingly received and respond generously - totally and completely - to our Lord and his Church. My family and I here in the Philippines thank you in advance – Father George, the Staff, and the entire St. Joseph community – for welcoming me. St. Joseph will not just be a new parish assignment to me, but a new family where together we will grow in mutual love of God and of one another. Rest assured of my continued prayers. In Christ and Mary, Father John (due to time of bulletin upload this was not able to appear in last weekend’s bulletin) For those who were not able to be with us last Sunday at the 9:30am Mass, this one is for you. Fr. John thanks everyone who stopped by to say “Hi,” and welcome him to St. Joseph. Fr. John’s contact info can be found on the front page of the bulletin and he is longing to meet each and everyone one of you. Thank you to Joanne Harnett for providing the beautiful and delicious cake. Our Sanctuary Floor For over ten years our community has lived with a sanctuary platform of painted plywood, after the carpet was removed. The Sanctuary is a sacred space on which we celebrate the Liturgy of the Word and Eucharist. Our Sanctuary needs to reflect the sacredness of our community. In the next couple of weeks, the sanctuary floor will be refurbished with a maple hardwood floor inlaid with a custom oak design. This project will be financed from a part of the funds returned to us from the Bishop’s Capital Campaign Reclaiming Christ’s Mission Together. Now we need your input on choosing a design pattern for the floor. Below you will find three floor design patterns completed by architect and parishioner Jackie Bassman and we invite you to vote for one of them. Ballots can be found in the Basilica side Niche and we ask that you place your completed ballot in the large jar. We thank you for your input to regarding this project and note that when the floor is completed, the restoration of our worship space will be completed.
