MEMORIAL DAY CELEBRATION
Memorial Day originally began in our country as an occasion to
remember and decorate the graves of the soldiers who died in the
Civil War. Later it became a holiday to commemorate all those
who had died in war in the service of our country. This continues
to be the main focus of Memorial Day.
This year, on Memorial Day, May 26th, we at St. Linus would like
to honor and remember them at the 8:30 morning mass. We will
celebrate the dedication and bravery of the men and women who
are now serving or have served in the armed forces. We will give
thanks to God and pray for all those who are still fighting to defend
our country’s beliefs in freedom. Please bring with you a framed
picture of your loved one or loved ones who have served or are
currently serving in the military as we will place them at the foot of the altar for this special mass.
If you would like to add a name to our banner of remembrance, please fill out the following form and drop it
into the collection basket or bring it to the parish office any time before May 19th. You can also email the information to [email protected].
After mass, you are invited to stay for some refreshments and fellowship. Please join us.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
DID YOU KNOW?
Young people who abuse alcohol are prey of perpetrators
According to the 2011 Monitoring the Future Survey, 70 percent of high school seniors and 33 percent of
eighth graders have experimented with alcohol. Young people who abuse alcohol are more likely to have
impaired judgment compared to those who do not. They are prone to making poor decisions, which can
result in risky behavior such as driving while intoxicated, sexual activity, or violence. Young people who
drink are also more likely to become victims or perpetrators of physical or sexual assault. In addition, recent research has shown the human brain continues to develop well into a person's twenties. Alcohol use at
a very young age can significantly affect brain development. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article, “Alcohol
abuse - The statistics and the risks for children,” email: [email protected].

Youth Ministry/LIFE TEEN
LIFE Nights are meetings that immediately follow the Youth Mass on Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:45 PM
and take place in the parish hall and are an integral part of a comprehensive youth ministry experience. Teens
in preparation for confirmation are expected to attend all nights. Focus for Life Nights include: Prayer & Worship, Community Building (Social), and Pastoral Care/Issue Nights. Our Confirmation preparation sessions
are more weighted on the catechetical component of youth ministry, but many components overlap the various
meetings.
Semester Schedule
The Nights for the remainder of the year all follow a theme. The theme of this semester was: Vocation. Often
when teenagers and adults hear “vocations,” they think, “All they are going to talk about is becoming a priest.”
Yes, priesthood is one particular vocation, but we are taking an approach to the semester in a much broader
sense. The dates, titles and topics for the remainder of the semester are:
Tonight: “Bound Together” – Discernment and Community
May 25: “Linus Got Talent” – Annual Talent Show (see below)
Stay tuned for summer social schedules and “fun”raisers.
Talent Show
The past 5 years LIFE TEEN has hosted a Youth Ministry Talent show. Over that time it has grown to an extraordinary success highlighting the talents of young people in the entire parish. Start rehearsing, audition
forms are available now! This annual event will be the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, May 26 and will be
from 7:30 PM – 9 PM. Admission is $2 and Refreshments will available for purchase. Proceeds will go to
offset expenses for our summer programming, Steubenville and Music Ministry Alive Conference.
Sacramental Preparation for High School Teens (Confirmation & First Communion)
Registration is Available NOW! Teens interested in getting involved in confirmation MUST first register for
youth ministry. Young ladies needing to register for youth ministry in order to schedule their Quinceañera are
also asked to register for youth ministry. Please send and email to [email protected] to request a copy of the
registration packet. A limited number of hard copies are available in the parish office or in the church. A $25
discount will be available when ALL registration materials are received on or before June 8, (Pentecost Sunday). For your convenience we will have a table set up outside of church after the LIFE TEEN Mass that
evening.
Phase 1 – Last meeting of this school year is June 2. This is a pot-luck Gathering. Phase 2 applications are
due. An interview is required in order to be invited to be a confirmation candidate. An interview will NOT be
scheduled unless you have turned in ALL materials required with the application.
Phase 2 – Attend the final small group meetings the week of June 2nd. Certificates and Photos will be available
to those who have zero outstanding balances.
Stay Connected
We in youth ministry are on a mission to stay more connected to our teens and their families than ever before.
If you have a Facebook profile please “like” our page at “Linus LIFE TEEN.” For those of you looking for
more frequent reminders that pertain to teens in youth ministry, phase one and phase 2, you can do so by sending a text to 562-741-8966 with the message “@linu” or send an email to [email protected] and get
reminders right to your phone or e-mail in box.
CALLING ALL CHRISTIANS . . .
If you have ever felt the calling to participate in a mission trip
and volunteer your services to God, then contact Chantile
Emerick at [email protected] or call or test (818) 9192492. We will be going to Kingston, Jamaica, July 26th—
August 2nd, 2014. We will be going to help Mustard Seed
Communities (MSC) which cares for children who are
disabled, forgotten, abandoned and marginalized. It is an indescribable and rewarding experience . . . all are
welcome!

PAGE EIGHT
FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
The Sacrament of Reconciliation at St. Linus is held every Saturday: 4-5pm and 8-9 pm
Who instituted the sacrament of Penance?
Jesus himself instituted the sacrament of Penance when he showed himself to his apostles on
Easter day and commanded them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are
forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained" (Jn 20:22a-23).
Nowhere did Jesus express more beautifully what happens in the sacrament of Penance than in the
parable of the Prodigal Son: We go astray, we are lost and can no longer cope. Yet our Father waits
for us with great, indeed, infinite longing; he forgives us when we come back; he takes us in again,
forgives our sins. Jesus himself forgave the sins of many individuals; it was more important to him
than working miracles. He regarded this as the great sign of the dawning of the kingdom of God, in
which all wounds are healed and all tears are wiped away. Jesus forgave sins in the power of the
Holy Spirit, and he handed that power on to his apostles. We fall into the arms of our heavenly Father when we go to a priest and confess. (YOUCAT question 227)
