www.bmwled.net 1999 -­‐ 2001 BMW E38 ANGEL EYE’S DIY INSTALLATION HARDWARE PROVIDED BY BMW LED DIFICULTY LEVEL -­‐ MEDIUM THE WHOLE JOB TOOK ABOUT 4 HOURS PART 1. INSTALLING LED ANGEL EYE’S IN TO THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY 1. REMOVE SIDE MARKER OR SIGNAL LIGHT. UNDO PHILLIPS SCREW JUST ENOUGH SO YOU CAN PULL THE SIDE MARKER OUT OF THE FENDER. 2. REMOVE BOTTOM OF THE HEADLIGHT SCALLOPED MOULDING (COVER), USE FLAT HEAD SCREWDRIVER TO GENTLY PRY IT OFF ON THE SIDES. DO NOT USE FORCE, AS IT WILL BEND EASY. 3. UNLATCH HIDDEN CLIP THAT’S CONNECTING FENDER WITH THE HEAD LIGHT ASSEMBLY, PULL AWAY FROM THE FENDER WITH SCREW DRIVER. PULL FENDER AWAY GENTLY SO IT CLEARS THE CLIP 4. REMOVE 2 TORX M20 SCREWS UNDER THE HEADLIGHT. YOU MAY NEED A FLASH LIGHT TO SEE THEM, AS THEY ARE DEEP UNDER THE HEADLIGHT. 5. REMOVE TWO TORX SCREWS FROM TOP OF THE HEADLIGHT; DISCONNECT WIREING HARNES FROM THE BACK OF THE UNIT. PULL THE HEADLIGHT OUT; IT MAY REQUIRE SOME WIGLING LEFT AND RIGHT. 6. ONES THE HEADLIGHT UNIT IS REMOVED FROM THE CAR, WE NEED TO REMOVE THE LENS. SLIDE A FLAT SCREWDRIVER UNDER THE CLIP AND PRY UP, THERE IS ABOUT 7 CLIPS HOLDING THE LENS TO THE BODY. 7. REMOVE PLASTIC FRAME HELD BY 3 TORX SCREWS, TO EXPOSE BOTTOM CLIPS; YOU WILL HAVE TO FLIP HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY OVER. 8. REMOVE RUBBER WEATHER STRIP BY PUSHING ON ITS OWN CLIP 9. WITH ALL CLIPS REMOVED, WITH YOUR FINGERS PULL THE LENS APART FROM THE REST OF THE HEADLIGHT. 10. REMOVE THE BLACK PLASTIC FRAME WITH CHROME INSERTS AND PLASTIC LENSES. THIS IS HELD IN PLACE BY ONE PHILLIPS SCREW IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER AND REST OF THE CORNERS ARE CLIPPED IN. 11. CLEAN ALL PLASTICS WITH MILD DETERGENT. TEST FIT THE ANGEL EYES ON BOTH OPENINGS, YOU WILL HAVE TO CUT THE PLASTIC TRIM PEACE ABOVE THE LED’S SO THEY WILL FIT SNUG AGAINST THE INTERNAL LENSE UNCUT LED CUT LED
12. PLACE CUT LED’S INSIDE THE LIGHT CAVITY, MAKE SURE IT FITS SNUG, I HAD TO FILE THE EDGES SO I CAN BEND THEM BETTER AROUND THE CURVATURE. MAKE SURE WIRES ARE PUSHED TROUGH THE GAP BETWEEN THE LENSE AND CHROME PEACE. ONES YOU HAVE THE FITMENT 100%, PULL THE LED’S OUT A BIT AND RUN A BEAD OF HOT GLUE ON THE BACK SIDE OF THEM AND PUSH THEM BACK IN TO THE CAVITY, HOLD WITH YOUR FINGERS UNTILL GLUE SETS. 13. ONES LED’S ARE SET IN PLACE, PUT EVERYTHING BACK IN TO THE HEADLIGHT, MAKE SURE ALL LENSES ARE CLEAN. RUN A BEAD OF VASELINE ON THE OUTER LENSE EDGE SO IT SEALS BETTER. 14. MAKE A NOTCH AT THE BACK OF THE HEADLIGHT, WHERE THE NEW WIRES ARE GOING TO COME OUT. 15. INSTALL THE HEADLIGHT IN THE CAR, REVERSE OF THE REMOVAL PROCEDURE. INSTALLING LED ANGEL EYE’S IN TO 1999 – 2001 BMW E38 PART 2. HOOKING UP LED ANGEL EYE’S TO THE CAR’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM THERE IS FEW DIFFERENT OPTIONS LED’S COULD BE WIRED IN, I HAVE DONE MINE IN A WAY THAT THEY WILL COME ON WHENEVER CAR IS LOCKED BY A REMOTE (STAYS ON FOR 5 SEC), WHEN CAR IS UNLOCKED BY A REMOTE (STAYS ON FOR 15 SEC). WHEN ANY OF THE DOORS ARE OPEN OR CLOSED LED’S WILL STAY ON FOR 15 SECONDS. WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING, LED’S ARE ON, REGARDLESS OF DAY LIGHT RUNNING LIGHTS, HIGH BEAM, LOW BEAM OR FOG LIGHTS. NO ERROR MESSAGES ARE DISPLAYED ON YOUR CLUSTER. 1. MOUNT THE LED’S RELAY AS SHOWN ON THE PICTURE. I HAVE EXTENDED POSITIVE RED WIRE AND ATTACHED IT TO THE POSITIVE TERMINAL ON THE TOP OF THE ENGINE (DRIVER SIDE). TO MAKE IT LOOK BETTER I TOOK OFF PLASTIC BMW COVER OFF THE VALVE COVER AND RAN THE WIRE NEXT TO THE POSITIVE WIRE THAT’S ALREADY THERE. GROUND WIRE AS SHOWN ON THE PICTURE. 2. PLUG IN THE LED WIRES FROM THE HEADLIGHT WITH THE WIRES FROM THE RELAY, MALE TO FEMALE, TUCK THEM INSIDE THE HEADLIGHT AND MAKE SURE THEY EXIT OUT TROUGH THE NOTCH MADE EARLIER, PUT THE COVER BACK ON. 3. TWO WIRES LEFT. WHITE AND YELLOW. YELLOW IS CONSTANT POWER THAT’S SWITCHED ON WHEN CAR IS RUNNING, AND WHITE IS FOR THE SWITCHED POWER OR REMOTE. YELLOW WIRE WILL BE TAPPED IN TO THE THINNER SOLID GREEN WIRE WITH WHITE STRIPE, LOCATED AT THE BACK OF THE HEADLIGHT HARNESS (DRIVER SIDE) 4. WHITE WIRE WILL BE TAPPED IN TO THE DOME LIGHTING WIRE, SPECIFICALLY THE WIRE THAT FEEDS THE LIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE DRIVERS DOOR. THIS IS A DIFFICULT ONE TO GET. IT IS LOCATED IN DRIVERS FOOTWELL, REMOVE THE PLASTIC COVER ABOVE BRAKE AND GAS PEDAL, EXPOSE THE WIRES IN UPPER LEFT CORNER UNDER THE DASHBOARD, PULL THE WIRE OUT A BIT AND TAP IN TO IT. I HAVE USED HEAVIER GAUGE WIRE SO IT IS EASIER TO FISH IT TROUGH THE FIREWALL. WIRE IS THINNER SOLID RED WITH BLUE STRIPE. TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT WIRE REMOVE THE LIGHT FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR AND CHECK THE COLOR. 5. FISH THE WIRE TROUGH THE FIREWALL, (BLUE WIRE) YOU WILL HAVE TO PUNCH A LITTLE HOLE TROUGH THE RUBBER BOOT, REACH FOR THE WIRE FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AREA WITH NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS. 6. AFTER YOU HAVE FISHED THE WIRE TROUGH THE FIREWALL, CONNECT IT WITH THE WHITE RELAY WIRE. TUCK IN ALL THE WIRES AND CLEAN UP. HERE IS FEW PICTURES OF BEFORE AND AFTER INSTALL.
