United Way’s vision for Lea County is to be a place where
all people and families thrive. This is accomplished by
making an all-encompassing impact in education and
peoples’ well-being through a unified community
collaboration to help the citizens of our communities reach
their full potential. In today’s world, it is vital that community
goals are shared and that each community program is held
accountable for delivering what it promises.
As stewards, we work hard to ensure the trust of our
donors, our volunteers, our partner agencies, and very
importantly, the folks that we tirelessly serve throughout Lea
County. As we all know, today’s successful communities
are not born; they are built.
As the President of United Way of Lea County I am
committed to ensuring that our organization continues to be
a respected, trusted, and an esteemed member of Lea
County by capitalizing the return on investment in all that
we bring to each of our stakeholders. I also pledge to all of
our stakeholders that our organization will continue its
transparency with any and all information. This information
will be posted on the United Way of Lea County website –
www.unitedwayofleacounty.org.
I would like to close by saying that without our staff, donors,
and volunteers, the United Way of Lea County could not be
as productive and effective in supporting the needs of Lea
County. Because of those who sacrifice time and money,
their friends and neighbors have a better quality of life,
which allows our organization to meet our mission of
positively impacting the cities of Lea County.
Finally, a great big thank you to everyone involved with the
United Way of Lea County. You are the people who
provide the resources, relationships, talent, and programs
that create a positive and powerful effect on the lives of so
many!

Thank you to the campaign speakers
and presenters. They are amazing
people. They come from the business
community, non-profit organizations,
schools and your neighborhood. They
are small business owners, stay-athome moms, school teachers, retired
folks and people who truly believe in the
power of communities to build strong
helping
networks.
Our
campaign
volunteers are at the root of strong
fundraising results, and they do it with
little fanfare and recognition.
A plastic grocery bag is not a backpack. A hand full of
broken crayons and a few old pencils is not a
sufficient set of school supplies. But that’s not a
problem each year for many hundreds of children in Lea County who receive a new backpack and
shiny new ‘tools for school’ through the annual United Way Stuff-a-Bus event! Businesses and
individuals donated approximately $20,000 in school supplies, which were delivered to every elementary school in the county. Thank you to Wal-Mart, KZOR, KIXN, KPZA, Opportunity House and all the
school districts for your support and participation.

This area may be famous for the oil and gas industry,
but there are some mighty good cooks around as well!
The 2013 United Way Chili Fest featured more than
just a new logo. Thousands of hungry souls filed into the Lea County Event Center parking lot to taste
test homemade chili, brisket, asado, Frito pies, grilled triple cheese sandwiches, fajitas, cobblers,
cheesecake, kettle corn, roasted corn and loads of other delectable groceries. The 21st Annual Chili
Fest week brought in a whopping $52,000! We appreciate everyone who helped make the event
possible!

This county-wide, free resource is active all year long
providing information to help people get the help they
need. Since 2004, we have worked with other service
providers, churches, civic organizations and law enforcement to help people find the resources they
need. With over 150 calls and walk-ins each month and several in-house direct services of our own,
we manage to stay busy!

2-1-1 Referral Help Line
This grant is funded by an endowment from
Hospice Services, Inc. and is available to
501 (c) 3 non-profit organizations. It
encourages new or better ideas, practices, products, processes or strategies that
add value to an organization or community. Think out of the box. A Community Innovation Grant is heavily focused on originality, inventiveness and innovation of
ideas and remarkable methods of addressing issues. This project must benefit citizens of Lea County, New Mexico.
MyPower, Inc.: $7,000
Provides young girls with a means of empowering one another to think about life goals and to talk
candidly about issues such as prevention of pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and facts and
myths pertaining to sexual activity. Currently the program serves seven schools in Hobbs, including
two middle schools. A Community Innovation Grant of $7,000 will enable the organization to expand
into Highland Middle School. Participants meet regularly with mentors, learn about a healthy
self-image and beneficial choices, as well as engaging in community service projects.
Salvation Army: $6,000
To facilitate a brand new program for The Salvation Army called Empowering People to Eat Their
Way to Better Health. In a series of lessons, Salvation Army staff and volunteers help attendees learn
to make healthy food choices using information on food packages and dietary guidelines. Participants
learn how to prepare food for maximum nutritional value and to shop wisely on a budget, focusing on
improving family wellness and bonding.
Girl Scouts: $3,500
Camp CEO II, an educational retreat and financial literacy weekend camp. Emphasizing a need for
access to such opportunities in rural areas, Girl Scouts recruits girls from smaller Lea County
communities to attend. Camp CEO II is designed to give girls the knowledge and skills to make
informed choices regarding personal finances and hands-on experience in utilizing these skills.

Above and Beyond Award
MONTY RAGSDALE
OXY Permian
The Above and Beyond award is given to individuals or companies who went a little further, worked
a little longer and went above and beyond what was expected of them in order to make the annual
campaign a success.
This year, Monty Ragsdale of OXY stepped in and rescued the United Way Chili Fest, which was in
danger of not happening because there was no event chairman to organize it. Consequently, the
event did happen and it was a resounding success!
Thank you, Monty, for all your tremendous work, dedication and enthusiasm. You’ll never know how
much you are appreciated.
Where does the money go? And who decides?
The money raised as a result of the annual campaign
is awarded to United Way partner organizations by a committee of Lea County residents. These
committee members hail from all walks of life, varied backgrounds, ethnicities, beliefs and professions. Once a year, they hear the requests for funding and, together, determine how to respond and
with what degree of funding. These are truly unsung heroes who are tasked with a very weighty
responsibility.
