FOR THE NEWS-SUN
The 60th annual conference for the
Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico
was held on Nov. 6 at the Albuquerque Academy.
Music students participating in composition,
student honors and Music Teacher National
Association competition were presented in a
student recital with the Joyce Walker Student
Foundation recognizing all of the first place
winners.
Joe and Joyce Walker of Hobbs presented cash
awards to 22 winners. The students entering the
national competition must prepare a complete
program of at least 30 minutes. Students eligible to be recognized through the Walker
Foundation must be studying with a teacher
who is a member of the PMTNM.
With the inception of the Walker Foundation
in 1984, 350 students have been recognized
through the years. The foundation was created
in honor of Joyce Walker’s leadership in the
state and national organizations where special
attention was with the development of the student affiliate program of PMTNM.
These opportunities were preparatory for students in pursuing a music degree in colleges
and music conservatories.
Top winners were University of New Mexico
students Matt Harris on saxophone and
Michael Shu on violin.
Ferrel Roberts of Clovis was recognized with
the Teacher of the Year award.
The ultimate goal of the Walker Foundation is
to encourage and to recognize students for talented and focused work through a collaboration
with the Professional Music Teachers of New
Mexico.

Hulu officially
launches pay
service, cuts price
NEW YORK (AP) — Online
video site Hulu formally
launched its premium streaming service Wednesday and cut
the price to $8 a month.
The service launched as a
preview about five months ago
for $2 more. Hulu said subscribers will receive credit for
the difference on what they
already paid.
Hulu’s service offers back
seasons of NBC, Fox and ABC
and other TV shows, such as
“30 Rock” and “Glee.”
The free portion of the site,
which has less content,
remains available. Hulu Plus,
however, offers high-definition content and is available
on a slew of Internet-connected devices, including the
iPhone, the iPad and the
PlayStation 3. The free Hulu is
only available on computers.
Hulu is jointly owned by
General Electric Co.’s NBC
Universal, Fox owner News
Corp., ABC owner The Walt
Disney Co. and Providence
Equity Partners. Earlier this
month, Hulu said it is on track
to generate more than $240
million in revenue this year,
more than double 2009 revenue of $108 million.
Dr. Jesus Fonseca
town of Vermont, about 15
miles west of Madison, then
pointed the gun at his wife, 66year-old Janice Cowan, who
escaped and called police,
authorities said. A SWAT team
surrounded the couple’s farmhouse, and officers were able
to talk Cowan out Tuesday
morning after an all-night
standoff.
