Though City of Hobbs
Building Inspector Manny
Marquez said there was not
anything too outstanding on
the 2013 construction report
it was still a busy year for
building in the city.
In 2013, a total of more than
$102.5 million in projects was
permitted, which exceeds
2012’s $87 million and 2011’s
$32 million.
Marquez said the total of
permits issued exceeds 1,800
— the most the city has ever
issued. In 2012, only 1,438
permits were issued.
“To me anytime we do issue
a permit it’s exciting because
people are really taking an
interest in their property,”
he said. “It’s exciting to see
all the people getting
involved.”
There was more than $29.2
million in residential construction permits issued in
2013 and, of that, 140 projects
were new or manufactured
homes totaling nearly $15.6
million.
Marquez said many of the
permits issued included residential remodels and re-roofing.
“Like last year because of
the hail storms you are going
to see that trend,” he said.
“Most of our numbers go up
because of re-roofing. If you
look at re-roofing, there were

anny Marquez was the City of
Hobbs building inspector for
more than 10 years before he
became the building official.
Marquez is the man who knows what
construction projects are coming to
town and issues developers its building permits.
This past year Hobbs received big construction projects such as Buffalo Wild
Wings, the ground breaking of the Zia
Park Hotel and several other projects.
Marquez expects to continue to see
growth in commercial projects in 2014
due to the oil field business booming
and Hobbs growing.
The following is a series of questions
submitted to Marquez and his responses.
Where do you see the largest percentage of permits coming from?
Apartments, remodels/renovations
etc.?
Re-roofing and remodeling are the
largest percentage. We had severe hail
storms in 2013 that accounted for the
re-roofing increase. Remodeling in residential structures is always going on.
Overall, in 2013 we
reached a total of
permits that exceeded 1,800 — the highest
ever — with a valuation
of over 100 million added
to our community.
With increased construction
going on do you have enough
staff ?
Not really, but we have a city
administration and commissioners

A Hobbs woman’s shopping
spree was compromised Friday
when she was handcuffed after
being accused of shoplifting at a
local department store and threatening store employees with a
screwdriver.
Sylvia Florez, 39, of the 1700
block of North
Oriole,
was
arrested
and
charged with
a g g ravated
assault,
a
fourth degree
felony,
and
shoplifting and
resisting, evading or obstructing an officer — Florez
both
misdemeanors.
According to police reports, officers responded to a department
store on the 1300 block of North
Turner to a shoplifting call.
En route to the scene, officers
learned that Florez fled from the
store and allegedly made threats
with what was believed to be a
knife to store management and
security who had cornered her in
an alley off Turner and North
Permian.
When officers approached the
area, Florez allegedly jumped
over a small fence and began to
flee again.
