Could borough

Haddonfield lacrosse takes on Seneca
Mayor Jeff Kasko hinted at the

Once again, the pending sale of
the Bancroft property to Recovery
Centers of America and Brian

Haddonfield
commissioners
meeting on April 13. Like before,
citizens voiced their opinions
against the sale and asked the
borough to make its own offer on
the property.
This time, Mayor Jeff Kasko
addressed the question of what
the borough has in the works
with the hint that it is working behind the scenes to potentially purchase the property.
“I don’t really have any details
or report to give other than we
are actively working on something,” Kasko said.
After the business portion of
the meeting, public comment was
riddled with comments and personal stories about the sale of the
Bancroft property to RCA. Citizens recognized the importance
of drug rehab facilities but felt
having one so close to two schools
as well as it not fitting the permitted use on the site was not appropriate.
At the end of many speeches,
numerous citizens urged the commissioners to make an offer on
the property.

Commissioners approve
bid for library renovations
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
The approval of a bid for Haddonfield Public Library renovations came just in time for National Library week.
Commissioners approved the
bid for library renovations/addition from Premier Builders Inc.,
which submitted a bid of $1.77
million for the base bid with three
alternate amounts of $185,000,
$35,000 and $18,000. The meeting
also introduced a bond ordinance
on first reading for various capital improvements of $646,000,
which commissioners also approved. The total cost of the project is estimated at $680,000.
“This is truly National Library
Week because the library is moving ahead and will be closing on
Sunday for our long-awaited reno-
vation and expansion that is happening,” Library Director Susan
Briant said.
After going out for bids time
and again, the borough has finally received acceptable bids for the
renovations.
Eight companies submitted
bids with a base amount along
with three alternates to do the
renovation in varying amounts.
Premier Builders Inc. was the
lowest bidder in all categories
and was therefore approved
unanimously by the commissioners.
“This is great news for Haddonfield, and I want to thank the
commissioners for all of their
support, and the patient community,” Briant said.
The library planned to close on
Sunday, April 19 and will be
closed for about three weeks

in our opinion
Help us help local organizations
We’re looking for your feedback on what non-profits to support
bout 10 years ago, we started a
contest of sorts that helped us
give back to the community of
Haddonfield.
In the contest, we ask residents of
Haddonfield – which, at the time, was
one of the only towns where we had a
newspaper – to submit short essays
telling the community why a local nonprofit group deserved to receive a donation. We gathered all the nominating
essays, published them and held a community-wide vote to see who was most
deserving.
After we tallied the votes, we donated $500 to the organization that won,
and we also gave $100 to the person
who wrote that particular essay. For
us, this contest – which we called The
Ray of Hope – was a way for us to give
back to the community in an extremely impactful way.
The smaller organizations that re-

ceived nominations – such as a Cub
Scout troop, a garden club, a senior citizens club or a book reading club –
often do as much for the community as
the larger, more well-known non-profits do, but they just don’t receive the
same attention, or financial backing.
We’re not saying that the March of
Dimes, Red Cross or other non-profits
don’t support worthy causes or are not
deserving of donations; we’re just saying the $500 we were donating had
more of an impact on the local town
organizations, since they operate with
a much smaller budget.
Last year, as we celebrated our com-
Dan McDonough Jr.
pany’s 10th anniversary, with now 10
newspapers that we publish, we expanded on this idea by creating The
Ray of Hope Fund – a part of the Community Foundation of South Jersey –
to make similar micro-donations to
community organizations that have a
significant impact in the neighborhoods they serve.
We’ve been collecting tax-deductible
donations over the last year, and are
still collecting them online at
http://elauw.it/rayofhopefund.
Now, we’re about ready to start distributing some of this money. But first,
we need your input.

Library staff needs to educate
community about services
Haddonfield deserves a library that
makes a difference in the lives of its citizens. I understand the borough is close to
agreeing to a contract to upgrade the existing facility to be handicap accessible. At
the same time, the library board will be
contributing a substantial part of its endowment to make needed changes to provide spaces that meet the needs of a 21stfirst century library. Unfortunately, while
this work is going on, an alternative space,
not offering the current range of library
services, will be used.
This will cause difficulties providing
children's services, which we do know
make a difference in the lives of many families with pre-teen children. Indeed, in the
summer of last year, several library board
members were told that some programs
were oversubscribed – children were being
turned away from programs they want to
attend. A large number of children complete the summer reading program every
year. The fact that about 45 percent of the
library's total circulation is children's material shows the importance of this program in our borough.
However, for other services, it is not so
clear how they are making a difference in
the lives of our community. The library
can tell us how often an entrance door is
opened, but not the number of people in
the community who use the library. We
know that annual circulation is about 10
books per resident, but we don't know if
half the folks in town borrow 20 books a
year or 5 percent of the people borrow 200
books per year. We know the library's tech-

nology programs on Word and email, 20year-old technology, bring in one or two attendees. The library does not offer programs on current technology that might
bring in 10 or 20 people.
The library has an excellent staff. If you
come into the library with a question, the
staff will work hard until you have an answer. But if you don’t know what the library can do for you or what resources it
has, the library is not making a difference.
I am unaware of the library reaching out
to the Haddonfield business community or
the PTAs or many other town organizations to find out the types of services they
can use and the questions they have.
Reaching out is a first step in making a difference in people's lives.
I hope the library board and library staff

John Burmaster
Trust our elected
officials with Bancroft
Spring has sprung/ “Bancroft
panic time”/ has now begun/ ‘n
we’re all about/ to come undone!
Or so suggests Mr. Coggins in
The Sun’s April 8 edition. He is
right, of course – a dearth of public information has given rise to
such controversial speculation
and disturbing rumors about the
Bancroft property sale as cannot
be ignored.
Many in our town are skeptical
about the authenticity of the RCA
proposal, and it is quite common
to hear questions like those posed
by Mr. Coggins: “How many plans
and plots and notions have been
put up as trial balloons…” Are
we “being hustled yet again? Are
we being baited into a bidding
war by claimed offers…?”
Despite a spate of suspicions
such as these, many of us are
quite confident that our elected
officials will demand and deliver
straight answers to us, their constituents. After all, two of our
commissioners have young children, and all of them are our
neighbors. They know that we are
all in this together, and that we
are counting on them to lead in
dealing with the Bancroft issue.
It should be crystal clear to all of
us, however, that we have an obligation to each other to speak out
about the prospect of a drug/alcohol rehabilitation facility on the
Bancroft property.
Who among us would object to
a rehabilitation center in an appropriate area? But, in the middle of a residential community,
next to a high school, in the immediate area of an elementary
school, is not an appropriate setting for the comings and goings of
a target population of substance
abusers in acute and chronic distress, and/or in various stages of
recovery and rehabilitation.
Surely, the interests of faceless
prospective buyers will not be allowed to trump the interests of
Haddonfield taxpayers, who have
voted more than once to forgo
raising tax revenue (indirectly)
from the sale of alcohol to preserve a quiet, stable, peaceful and
family-friendly environment in
our town. The public will on the
issue of alcohol has been expressed at the ballot box, and it is
inconceivable that our commissioners – and their zoning/planning board appointees – would
countenance an alcohol/drug related rehab business on the Bancroft site.
Many of us have friends
and/or relations who are, or have
been, victims of drug/alcohol ad-
diction, and we know how challenging it can be to control all the
variables in a rehab environment. Addiction treatment centers are an increasingly important component of health care.
Care must be taken to situate
them in appropriate locations for
the sake of both patients and
community residents. The very
idea of opening a drug/alcohol
rehabilitation center in a school
zone defies common sense.

As outdoor activities increase
with the arrival
of
warmer
weather, so does
the chances of
encountering domesticated and
wild
animals.
The
Camden
County Department of Health and Human Services reminds you to avoid any
contact with unknown animals
due to the threat of rabies.
Although rabies is a serious
and sometimes fatal illness, its effects can be prevented by early
treatment. The disease is spread
to humans through the bite of an
infected animal, or much more
rarely through exposure to the
saliva of that animal.
If you do encounter an unknown animal and have been bitten or scratched it is important
that you seek immediate medical
attention to prevent the onset of
the disease. Individuals who have
been exposed to a rabid animal
usually receive a series of injections in the deltoid (shoulder) at
prescribed intervals. Prompt
medical attention after being bitten or exposed to a diseased animal is essential to an individual’s
recovery.
I urge you to protect your family, your pets and yourself from
rabies by observing a few simple
rules. First and foremost, please
be a responsible pet owner and
keep rabies vaccinations up to
date for all dogs, cats, and ferrets.
You should also keep your pets
under direct supervision so they
do not come in contact with wild
animals.
If your pet is bitten by a wild
animal, you should seek immediate veterinary assistance and always contact your local animal
control agent to remove any stray
animals from your
neighborhood. They
may be unvaccinated
and could be infected
by the disease.
It is very important
to avoid direct contact
with unfamiliar animals. Teach your children that they should
never handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic,
even if they seem friendly. Never
adopt wild animals or bring them
into your home. Do not try to
nurse sick animals to health. Always call animal control or an animal
rescue
agency
for
assistance. Be sure to know the
animal control number in your
municipality.
Enjoy wild animals such as
raccoons, skunks, and foxes from
afar. Do not handle, feed, or unintentionally attract wild animals
with open garbage cans or liter.
Prevent bats from entering living
quarters or occupied spaces in
homes, churches, schools and
other similar areas where they
might come in contact with people or pets.
You can learn more about rabies on the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention website:
www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvrd/rabies or the New Jersey Department of Health and Human
Services site: www.state.nj.us/

HMHS to test ‘Open Campus
Concept’ for juniors, seniors
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Juniors and seniors at Haddonfield Memorial High School
might soon be given the opportunity to go off campus during their
lunch and study halls.
Tracy Matozzo, dean of student
life at HMHS, gave a brief presentation on the Open Campus Concept at the Haddonfield Board of
Education meeting on April 16.
The program allows juniors and
seniors with good academic
standing and with a parent’s or
guardian's permission to leave
the school campus during a lunch
or study hall. She would like to
have the program ready to be implemented into the school and
student handbook by early May.
“We thought, ‘How we can alleviate some of that stress of being

a high school student?’ Then we
looked at other high schools similar to Haddonfield, and they had
something at their school called
an Open Campus,” Matozzo said.
According to Matozzo, sometimes students are in school for
6.5 hours a day and need a break,
and if they have a lunch and
study hall, sometimes the simple
act of walking outside alleviates
some of that stress and pressure.
“We think it is the first part of
a plan to look to improve our climate and culture. We trust our
students to not take advantage of
the things they have. I think this
is another way to continue the
momentum of our district moving forward,” Matozzo said.
According to Matozzo, the
Open Campus Concept is open to
all juniors and seniors in good academic standing, and those stu-
dents would be able to leave
school grounds without adult supervision when not assigned to
an academic or elective period.
Any student not in good academic
standing would not have this privilege.
There will be a letter sent to
parents or guardians where they
would either need to give or not
give permission for their child to
participate. If they choose to opt
out, their children would be enrolled into a study hall, which
would count as a class.
“Parents may opt out of Open
Campus for their children. If that
is the case, they would continue
to attend the study hall, treated
with the same academic attendance and behavior expectations,” Matozzo said.
Highlights of the requirements
are: Open Campus is a privilege
intended for only upperclassmen,
juniors and seniors; junior and
seniors interested in the Open
Campus must submit the application with a signature from a parent or guardian, and a phone call
to that parent or guardian will be
made to verify; and the student
must maintain a record of consistent attendance and punctuality.
An overview of infractions are
suspension of privileges will be
issued for a minimum of two
weeks with additional time added
depending upon the nature, duration and frequency of the infraction. An example of an infraction
would be coming in late or not
coming back to their academic
classes. This is to deter students
from taking advantage of the
privilege.
The effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the program is something
the school would review quarterly. It would run attendance reports and look at what happens at
the end of each quarter; if they
see 10 percent of the students
aren’t returning to their classes,
then there is a problem, and Open
Campus is not something for
which the district is ready.

Night of comedy for UrbanPromise
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
A night of laughter, fun and
music will be coming to Haddonfield this weekend, all to spread
awareness and help a good cause.
UrbanPromise, a non-profit organization
helping
Camden
youth, will present an all-ages
Comedy Night with Taylor
Mason, taking place at First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield,
20 Kings Highway East, on Sunday, April 26. Doors open at 6 p.m.
and the show begins at 6:30 p.m.
“Come to enjoy yourself, laugh
together with family and friends,
and maybe come away with a
want to serve and get more involved in an under-sourced community so close to us. Or be inspired to serve somewhere else,”
said Jennifer Giordano, community relations director for UrbanPromise.
Haddonfield was chosen to host
the event because of its strong
commitment to UrbanPromise,
both with volunteering as well as
donations. Comedy Night with
Taylor Mason will raise awareness of UrbanPromise’s ministries serving children locally in
Camden and around the world in
Malawi and Uganda, Africa.
“What we do is we want to hold
events for families to come and
learn more about UrbanPromise,
Camden and International. We
raise awareness for that as well as
give the opportunity for people to
give,” Giordano said.
Admission is free, however
there will be an opportunity to donate during the evening. The
event was decided to be free, not
only as a thank you to the Haddonfield community, but to open
it to all people and give them an
opportunity to learn more about
UrbanPromise.
“We wanted to open it up to the
most people. The giving part of it
is from someone’s desire to be a
part and make a difference in
these at-risk communities,” Giordano said.
From Second City Theater to
Disney Line to Carnegie Hall,
award-winning comedian and
ventriloquist Mason has headlined at every major comedy club
across the country. His perform-
ances include a hilarious mix of
ventriloquism,
comedy
and
music with a family-friendly approach appropriate for all ages.
“They’ll have a great time with
Taylor Mason. He has traveled nationwide with his ventriloquism.
He really is funny.
“Last year was my first year
hosting this event with him, as he
has done it before for UrbanPromise, and I can say, yes he is
really funny. He is a good time for
all,” Giordano said.
In addition, there will be an opportunity to sponsor children in
UrbanPromise’s after-school programs and summer camps. These
programs provide opportunities
for children to improve their academic performance develop necessary life skills, create positive
relationships with caring adults,
explore the arts and nurture their
faith within a safe and stimulating environment.
“Help us sponsor a child in our
after-school programs and summer camps, domestically and in-
ternationally. Most of our afterschool programs keep our kids in
at-risk cities from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
and help with homework, Bible
study, guidance, healthy snacks
and ultimately keeping them safe.
That is where we are focusing on
in after-school programs,” Giordano said.
Giordano hopes those who
come to the event not only enjoy
themselves, but also learn more
about UrbanPromise and Camden and feel encouraged to help.
“I hope they feel happy and feel
inspired. I hope they learn something new about a community
that is always portrayed in such
poor light and that they see the
beautiful, happy faces of children,” Giordano said.

resident Chris Maynes said.
After many similar speeches, a
resident asked if the commissioners had any details to share with
the public, as there have been
many rumors going around about
“loopholes, shrinking windows
and money.”
Kasko started off by saying
they do not have anything publicly to share and they, along with

“We’re in a difficult position in
that we really can’t provide more

Kasko said he thinks within
the next week or two the commissioners might have some sort of
update to give.
Kasko also wanted to remind
citizens that RCA and O’Neill will
be hosting a public meeting on
April 22 at 7 p.m. in the Haddonfield Memorial High School auditorium, where he will provide
more information and “answer

“So this isn’t something that is
instituted and is instituted for forever, it is something that will be
reviewed, especially for the first
year or two on a quarterly basis,”
Matozzo said.
According to Matozzo, the
school has already made the police aware of the Open Campus
Concept, and many of the eateries have heard of it as well. Some
of the local eateries are excited
and are looking into doing some
student specials, Matozzo said.
“It’s really a community-based
effort. Something that we’ve been
researching that many schools
across the state similar to ours already institute, and we’ve tailored it to the needs of our own
school,” Matozzo said.
All information will be shared
with parents and students via
eBlast within the next few weeks.
According to Matozzo, she would
need about two weeks to update
the student handbook, get the letter sent to all the parents and
guardians of the juniors and seniors, run a report of which students are not in a position to participate so she can be more proactive with their parents, send out
all the information, and take a
look at the duty rosters and reassign teachers so it is equitable.
She would like to see this put into
play in early May.

category, Chloe Luci and Chase
Degillio received second place,
and Alexandra Brown and
Joseph Poliafico received third
place. In the middle school category, Anna Swartley and Tyler
Christianson received second
place.
• A resident came forward at
last week’s board of education
meeting with the request that the
board look into a full-day kindergarten program. The board said it
would look into at a future curriculum meeting.
• The board gave approval to
the Haddonfield Youth Basketball
Association’s Recreational Enhancement Project at Radnor
Field.
They are looking to rebuild
basketball courts and tennis
courts and are applying for a
grant to do so. They are doing it
through the borough, but because
the school owns it, they needed
board approval.
• The public hearing and second reading for the budget, which
the county approved, will be held
at the next meeting on April 30 at
7 p.m. in the HMHS library.

The Haddonfield freshman basketball team, pictured here, was recently invited by former Haddonfield
basketball player Doug Stewart, 1,000 point scorer and Hall of Famer at HMHS, and now assistant coach
with the Delaware 87ers, to a game played at the Carpenter Center. The boys got to meet Darryl Dawkins
formerly of the 76ers and Malik Waynan, former star from Villanova and point guard for the 87ers. It was
a great demonstration of giving back to Haddonfield youth basketball.
