2.7
Disposal of the Unit
In designing the unit, we tried to avoid using composite materials wherever possible. This concept
ensures that a significant part of the unit can be recycled once it has reached the end of its useful
life. This also explains why we offer to take back the unit so it can be appropriately disposed of and
recycled.
We would also like to point out that the provisions of the electronic waste regulation must be duly
observed at the time of disposal.

Introduction and Description
3.1
Intended Use
The medTV digital camera system is intended for recording the surgical procedures during an
operation. Thus, the video images can be used for patient-specific documentation as well as for
training purposes, e.g. in the form of a live operation transmission.
3.2
Design
1
2
The medTV digital camera system consists of the camera and the control unit. The camera can be
installed either on the operating light’s own suspension (see Fig. 1) or on a separate arm (Fig. 2).
The very high resolution in conjunction with a wide zoom and sensitivity range satisfies the highest
demands and enables an excellent image quality. The horizontal resolution, with about 460 TV
lines, is so high that the composite color video signal usually used in television engineering is no
longer sufficient for transmission. Therefore, the camera features a Y/C output (S-video) that
makes this system compatible with conventional video systems as well as S-video recorders and
S-video monitors. Needless to say, the system also allows you to connect TFT flat screens,
medical screens and commercial monitors.
V 1.0
13
Martin medTV digital Operating/Mounting/Service Instructions
The camera system offers electronic focus, zoom and shutter control, thus giving the user excellent
control of the video image, enabling him to focus precisely, change the image scale as appropriate
(e.g. magnify image sections) and adjust the brightness.
3
The camera is controlled via a separate control unit (Fig. 3) installed in the operating room and/or
through the supplied software that can be installed on any computer. (The software documentation
is contained on the CD-ROM supplied with the product.)
Important notes!
•
The camera is NOT sterilizable!
•
The objective is not suitable for wet disinfection!

2
Avoid improper handling (tilting/jamming, mechanical impact such as shocks or knocks) because
this might damage the connector and lead to malfunction.
Never connect plugs to sockets with a different number of poles! Only the matching plug-andsocket connections provided by the manufacturer will guarantee safe and reliable functioning.
Check oval shape of socket
To ensure perfect contact inside the connector, the contact sockets (see pos. 3) must have an oval
shape. Verify that your connectors have the dimensions indicated in the above diagram. If
necessary, adjust the connector’s shape manually. Note that a round shape is not permitted as it
might cause malfunction.

Monitor and Additional Devices
5.5.1
Important Notes Concerning the Monitor and the Installation of Additional Equipment
•
Monitors connected to the camera must comply with the relevant IEC standards (e.g. IEC 950
for data processing equipment, and IEC 601-1 for medical equipment) and must have been
certified accordingly. Besides, all structures should be based on the IEC 601-1-1 system
standard.
•
Everybody who installs additional equipment at the signal input or output configures a medical
system and is thus also responsible for the system’s compliance with the IEC 601-1-1 system
standard requirements. If in doubt, please consult the Technical Service of your local
representative.
•
The user/operating instructions of all of the units belonging to the camera system must
be observed!
5.5.2
Ceiling-Tube-to-Wall Connection
Prior to putting the camera system into service, the wall-mounting box must be properly installed in
the intended place (usually carried out by an in-house technician).

•
Only use the connectors specified herein!
The use of other connectors would jeopardize the safety of the system and thus pose hazards
to yourself and other persons.
•
Connecting cables should be laid so that no one steps on them and they are not squashed by
objects placed on or against them. Pay particular attention to the cables at the plugs, at the unit
sockets and at those points where cables exit from the wall box.

Operation
The camera is operated through the control unit and/or the software. The software is documented
on the CD supplied with the product.
6.1
Button Functions
Upon switching on the control unit, the IRIS, FOCUS and White Balance functions will be
immediately available in automatic mode. The ON/OFF switch c and the AUTO buttons f and i
will light up.
•
ON/OFF switch c
Use this button to switch the camera on and off.
•
IRIS (shutter) d e f
The IRIS control buttons are used for exposure control. With the AUTO button f, you can
switch the automatic mode on and off. The buttons d and e enable you to adjust image
brightness manually. When the automatic mode is switched off (button f not illuminated), you
can manually adjust the brightness with buttons d and e. Button e also enables you to
reduce any fade-over caused by strongly reflecting instrument surfaces.
Pressing buttons d and e simultaneously switches over from automatic exposure control to
integral measurement (can be preset after switching on the unit) or spot measurement.
•
FOCUS g h i
This function controls image sharpness (focus).
Operating the AUTO button i switches the AUTOFOCUS function on and off.
When the AUTOFOCUS function is switched off (button i not illuminated), you can adjust the
image sharpness by holding down either button g or button h. If you change the zoom setting,
it may be necessary to adjust the manual focus setting as well.
Pressing the buttons g and h simultaneously switches between freeze mode and live mode.
•
ZOOM j k
The zoom function allows you to change the image scale (object-to-image ratio, or
magnification). Button j scales down (demagnifies), button k scales up (magnifies).
V 1.0
27
Martin medTV digital Operating/Mounting/Service Instructions
Pressing the buttons j and k simultaneously displays the camera menu in the camera image
(with the current camera status, e.g. zoom setting, indicated in the form of sliding controls).
•
6.2
White Balance l
The white balance adjusts the image colors to the color temperature of ambient lighting.
To perform the automatic white balance, first place a white surface in front of the camera, then
press button l for about 2 seconds until the button’s backlight confirms the action. The white
balancing is now completed.
Positioning the Camera
The camera can be repositioned by adjusting either the light head or the camera itself (when
installed on a separate arm), using the respective handle in each case.
6.3
Correcting the Image Position
To achieve a correct image position in every camera position, the
camera can be rotated in its mounting (retaining ring).
Important note:
To ensure the greatest possible freedom of movement, no limit stops
were used. However, you should avoid multiple camera rotations
because this could damage or twist off the cable!

Cleaning and Care
7.1
Cleaning the Camera’s Glass Plate
Since a dirty camera glass will affect image quality, you should clean this glass regularly using a
mild cleaning solution:
•
Remove the handle (as described in the following subsection).
•
Clean the glass with a soft, lint-free cloth. If necessary, moisten it with a mild cleaning solution.
Notes:
•
Never use scouring agents, solvents or benzine for this purpose because these agents would
damage the glass or the objective.
•
All surfaces may be cleaned only with a mild cleaning agent and a soft, lint-free cloth.
7.2
Replacing the Sterilizable Handle
Release the handle by pressing down the locking bar
Remove the handle in the direction indicated
Important: Be sure that the new handle engages
audibly. This may require a slight rotation to the left or
right after sliding it on.
7.3
Cleaning, Disinfecting and Sterilization of the Handle
The exchangeable handle can be processed by machine with the same programs used for your
surgical instruments. The handle is thermostable and can be thermally disinfected at 93°C (199°F).
Be sure to observe the instructions given by the manufacturer of your automatic washer-disinfector
and the manufacturers of the cleaning agents used.
We recommend using fully demineralized water for the final rinse to prevent deposits or surface
changes such as spots or stains.
V 1.0
29
Martin medTV digital Operating/Mounting/Service Instructions
7.4
Cleaning and Disinfecting the Camera’s Externally Accessible Parts
All external surfaces of the camera system may be cleaned with neutral, tenside-based cleaners
(mild washing-up liquids, neutral cleaning agents).
For disinfecting, neutral disinfectants (such as surface disinfectants) based on aldehydes,
quaternary ammonium compounds, etc., may be used.
To protect the camera as well as the operating light and the tracking and spring arms from ingress
of humidity, never spray the parts to be cleaned! Rather, wipe them clean with a cloth moistened
with a cleaning solution, and disinfect them in the same manner.

Troubleshooting
Our camera systems are built according to strict criteria and on the basis of in-process quality
control. We used only the best materials and selected electronic components. Therefore, camera
failure is improbable. Should problems occur despite of this, your in-house technician may carry
out the following checks:
Problem/Symptom
Remedies
No image
Check camera, control unit, monitor (position of ON/OFF switch);
check mains plug and insert it if not yet done.
Note: When the control unit is switched off, the camera’s video
image is switched off as well.
Check cable connections, monitor and video equipment.
Monitor shows black-and-white image Use color monitor. Adjust monitor color saturation control.
Monitor image shows unnatural colors Perform white balance on camera. Adjust monitor color saturation
control.
Monitor shows interference
Eliminate external sources of interference (e.g. camera or camera
cable near monitors, power cables or equipment that is not
interference-proof; all this could cause HF interference).
Monitor image out of focus
Adjust image sharpness manually or set camera to AUTO mode
(see “Operation” section, item “Focus”).
Clean camera glass.
Should the problems persist, call your Technical Service.
By using a second monitor, it is usually possible to determine whether the problem is rooted in the
monitor or the camera. However, further error searching is not possible on the spot. If the trouble
cannot be remedied by the above measures, please do not hesitate to contact us.
The unit may only be serviced and repaired by the manufacturer or by a service representative
expressly authorized by us to perform such work. Please note that non-compliance voids the
manufacturer’s warranty.
