WALKOUT—A Time to Quit Smoking
On Thursday November 19 th McCurtain Memorial Hospital teamed up with the Community Action Planning Students
in Idabel and the McCurtain County Coalition for Change to Sponsor a ―Walk Out‖ in support of the 34 th annual Great
American Smokeout Day.
Groups walked from 4:30 to 6:30 at the Garden Meadows Trail located in front of the hospital. They received educational materials with suggestions and ideas on how to stop smoking. Participants had the added bonus of speaking
to people from our community who had quit smoking in the past and were willing to share their experiences.
Organizers of the event were pleased with the turn out and said they hoped everyone understood the importance
of the choices they had made since tobacco is the state’s leading preventable cause of death. The importance of
quitting smoking now was stressed. Organizers wanted everyone to
remember for every year you go smoke free you are adding not only
years to your life, you are adding quality. Loved ones were reminded
exposure to second-hand smoke has been linked with increased heart
disease, cancer and respiratory disease as well as an estimated 700
deaths in Oklahoma each year.
Participants said they were encouraged knowing they were not the
only ones deciding to make this years Great American Smokeout the
day they chose to quit. They were also quick to tell the younger par- Community Action Planning Students from

Question of the Day…
A recent study conducted by the American Institute
for Cancer Research states that a third of Americans
are overweight with another 26% defined as obese using
BMI measurements. In addition, a CDC study released in
July of this year has determined ―that obesity related
diseases account for nearly 10% of all medical spending
in the United States or an estimated $147 billion a
year.‖ (Reuters Nov. 2009).
According to the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. government, is exploring which tactics may work best in a new
strategy other governments around the world have
adopted known as ―community-based obesity prevention‖ specifically aimed at reducing childhood obesity.
This new strategy is designed to change the environment
within a community to one that encourages physical activity, provides education, improves access to healthier
foods, and reduces the number of harmful choices available.
The question of the day is: Should the government
have a role, and if so, how much, in changing the environment of our communities and people’s eating habits?
