VIBRANT

beliefs, I was terrified that somehow
I could be wrong. I began to distance
myself so far from God that my life
had an overwhelming sense of
emptiness.
Finally, I made a pact to myself that
I would devote a year to seeking
God, while still identifying as a gay
man. If by the end of that year I
hadn't felt the presence of God, I
committed to renounce my sexuality.
MCC Toronto was my first stop on
my search to re-find God - and
I was born into a very conservative

church and received contradicting
my last stop. The second I entered
messages about the nature of God.
It took me quite some time to figure the front doors, the love of God that
I had been craving was so tangible
out who I was. Once I did, I boldly

First Reading
1981 Bath House Raids
Psalm 77:1-6, 11-15, 20
I yell out to my God, I yell with all
my might, I yell at the top of my
lungs. He listens. I found myself in
trouble and went looking for my
Lord; my life was an open wound
that wouldn't heal. When friends
said, "Everything will turn out all
right," I didn't believe a word they
said. I remember God - and shake
my head. I bow my head - then
wring my hands. I'm awake all
night - not a wink of sleep; I can't
even say what's bothering me. I go
over the days one by one, I ponder
the years gone by. I strum my lute
all through the night, wondering
how to get my life together. Once
again I'll go over what God has
done, lay out on the table the
ancient wonders; I'll ponder all the
things you've accomplished, and
give a long, loving look at your
acts. O God! Your way is holy! No
god is great like God! You're the
God who makes things happen;
you showed everyone what you
can do - You pulled your people
out of the worst kind of trouble,
rescued the children of Jacob and
Joseph. Hidden in the hands of
Moses and Aaron, You led your
people like a flock of sheep.
Earlier this week, Chief of Police
Mark Saunders apologized for the
1981 bathhouse raids that saw
hundreds of gay men arrested.
“The Toronto Police Service regrets
those actions” said Saunders during
the annual Pride reception at police
headquarters on June 22.
Saunders said that the Toronto
police force has learned many
lessons about how to work with the
LGBTQ community for greater
understanding and acceptance. In
light of the tragic events in
Orlando, police must support and
protect those marginalized because
of their sexual orientation.
Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes helped craft
the historic statement. “My
intention was to honour the people
who went through the horror of
that night,” said Brent.
