They could be a cooperative or mutual. We continually refer to the importance of cooperatives and mutuals whenever we are given the chance and it isn’t just because we are proud that Capricorn’s success is intrinsically linked to our cooperative business model. It’s because we firmly believe model is the backbone of the Capricorn business model, we will be acknowledging What could a brewery, a bank, a football club and a cooperative values and principles are pivotal to our everyday life. These days we are forever feeling the pressure of rising costs of living. We all have families and worry about the cost of childcare, we see grocery bills continue to rise, we look for the cheapest fuel, buy beer on special and wince when we open bills. While cooperatives and mutuals won’t necessarily force these costs of living down, they do even out the playing field. Economies with higher levels of business diversity are less subject to market volatility, so the more cooperatives and mutuals there are, the better. With their proven resilience in market downturns, it’s no wonder cooperatives and mutuals are increasingly seen as a better way to do business. Cooperatives are an international movement, with millions of cooperatives making a difference around the world every day Capricorn was established 40 years ago because a small group of Western Australian service station owners wanted to increase their buying power and level the playing field with the big multinational oil companies. At the heart of what Capricorn does is the desire for a fairer and better way of doing business which is all for the benefit of Capricorn Members. In addition to these we have all the regular features which I am sure you will enjoy. This story is no exception and proves that excellence is possible when the right young people are given the opportunity to succeed. I recently had the privilege of meeting Cameron Bisschop, a second year apprentice of Rock Hard Motors who has taken his opportunity in both hands and excelled. skills and sourced the right training provider to suit both his training and the business’s needs. The team at Rock Hard Motors is excited to see what the future holds for Cameron and he is certainly on the right track with his recent successes. Cameron is looking forward to his future within the industry and getting more valuable seconds out of the Rock Hard Motors drag car which is featured as this month's Member's Ride. A member of the public saw Cameron’s skills, talent and dedication to his trade and independently nominated him for the Casey Federal Awards, which recognise the achievements of upstanding members of its community. A total of 250 nominees from a variety of apprenticeship and traineeship vocations went through the selection process. Upon awarding prizes, Cameron was ecstatic to come in as runner up which is a fantastic achievement for a second year apprentice. The recognition and award has provided Cameron with additional motivation and he certainly has a bright future ahead. “When I wake up I cannot wait to get to work” said Cameron. Responsibilities are already growing for Cameron who now opens up the workshop early in the morning to ensure all is ready for the day ahead. Credit can also be given to Rocco and Grace from Rock Hard Motors, who as employers, have shown absolute dedication to Cameron in his pursuits to work within the automotive industry. Capricorn Mutual Limited, through Capricorn Risk Services, recently went the extra mile for one of their Members who unfortunately had to deal with a disastrous situation. The Cameron family of Baldivis in Western Australia bore the brunt of a very unfortunate situation that was out of their control when a car bearing stolen number plates crashed in nearby bushland sparking a fire which partially gutted their family home. An investigation determined that the fire started from the car’s hot exhaust pipe after the vehicle crashed. It spread to the Baldivis home within minutes, going through the bedrooms of the Cameron's two boys, aged four and eight, who escaped the blaze with their parents. Ms Cameron said she and her children would probably not have survived the blaze had her husband not woken them. Her husband had gone to help a friend whose car had broken down and when he returned to the home about 11.30pm, there were no signs of fire. “He went up to the house and had a two-minute shower and when he came out the hall was on fire,” she said. Whilst the Cameron family were lucky to escape unscathed, unfortunately that wasn't the case for their family home which sustained around $250,000 worth of damage. Ordinarily this would have been a straight forward claim through Capricorn Mutual Limited however, Ms Cameron said a series of events had led to their protection not being renewed and at the time of the incident, the Cameron family's protection had lapsed so they were not protected. Upon assessing the situation and the circumstances surrounding the incident, Capricorn Mutual Limited recognised the Camerons had been loyal Members for seven years and believed it was their intention to renew their protection. Given this, a decision was made to honour the Cameron's protection. This instance provides a perfect example of the discretionary nature of Capricorn Mutual Limited agreeing to accept the Member claim outside of the protection period. Jim Glossat, CEO of Capricorn Risk Services, states "Whilst Capricorn Risk Services provide some fantastic benefits, at the end of the day, the top priority is working with Members to protect their homes and businesses." For peace of mind, contact Capricorn Risk Services today on 1800 007 022 or visit www.capricornrisk.com Products sold through Capricorn Risk Services Pty Ltd include discretionary risk protection and general insurance products issued by a range of insurers and brokered through Capricorn Insurance Services Pty. Without getting too technical, diesel engines work at higher compression ratios than most petrol engines and are therefore built very strongly. This fact alone makes diesel engines a great deal more durable than a petrol engine of the same size and capacity. This also explains why you see so many diesel powered cars with hundreds of thousands of kilometres on the odometer. Diesel engines also don’t require spark systems to 6 CAPRICORN IGNITION MARCH 2015 No matter what happens with electric or hybrid engine technology, there is no doubt at all that diesel is here to stay. this has reduced significantly over the years, but far these engines have progressed and how incredibly the driveability is every bit as good as most petrol efficient and driveable they are. No matter what happens with electric or hybrid engine technology, there is no doubt at all that diesel is here to stay. The drag car build was undertaken as a test for Rocco and his team as they were expanding their services to include panel and paint, building on their already proficient mechanical expertise. The entire four and a half year build was completed in-house by the Rock Hard Motors team and the Torana boasts some very impressive modifications. The car is running a small block Chev V8 engine which puts out 650 horsepower. The team also fitted a custom transmission and fabricated a 9-inch diff. The Torana is also rolling on Mickey Thompson Drag Radial's. The car has only recently been finished and is still going through an extensive testing and tuning phase. The end goal is to enter drag racing competitions and race the car regularly. Whilst in the testing and tuning phase, Rocco had the privilege of taking the Torana to Calder Park Raceway to put it through its paces. Initial results were very impressive to say the least. In its third pass, the Torana clocked a 10.1 second quarter mile and from start to 200m, reached a speed of 176km/ph. The build would not have been possible without the input of Valvoline and Century Batteries who assisted in getting the project off the ground through sponsorship support. The build is testament to the Rock Hard Motors team and certainly highlights their expertise in panel, paint and mechanical work. We look forward to some impressive competition results once racing begins in earnest. If you think your ride has what it takes to be published in the Ignition magazine, please email your details to the editor at [email protected].
