We continually refer to the importance of cooperatives and mutuals whenever we are given the chance and it isn’t just because we are proud that Capricorn’s success is intrinsically linked to our cooperative business model. It’s because we firmly believe cooperative values and principles are pivotal to our everyday life. These days we are forever feeling the pressure of rising costs of living. We all have families and worry about the cost of childcare, we see grocery bills continue to rise, we look for the cheapest fuel, buy beer on special and wince when we open bills. 100 million jobs are provided by cooperatives, 20% more than all multinational corporations combined force these costs of living down, they do even out Cooperatives are an international movement, with millions of cooperatives making a difference around the world every day Capricorn was established 40 years ago because a apprentice who is attaining impressive milestones within the automotive industry. childcare centre have in common? CAPRICORN IGNITION MARCH 2015 3 Award Winning Apprentice by Jake Brew Travelling around as a Capricorn Area Manager, I have the privilege of hearing some fantastic stories regarding our Member's businesses and the automotive industry in general. This story is no exception and proves that excellence is possible when the right young people are given the opportunity to succeed. I recently had the privilege of meeting Cameron Bisschop, a second year apprentice of Rock Hard Motors who has taken his opportunity in both hands and excelled. skills and sourced the right training provider to suit both his training and the business’s needs. The team at Rock Hard Motors is excited to see what the future holds for Cameron and he is certainly on the right track with his recent successes. Cameron is looking forward to his future within the industry and getting more valuable seconds out of the Rock Hard Motors drag car which is featured as this month's Member's Ride. A member of the public saw Cameron’s skills, talent and dedication to his trade and independently nominated him for the Casey Federal Awards, which recognise the achievements of upstanding members of its community. A total of 250 nominees from a variety of apprenticeship and traineeship vocations went through the selection process. Upon awarding prizes, Cameron was ecstatic to come in as runner up which is a fantastic achievement for a second year apprentice. The recognition and award has provided Cameron with additional motivation and he certainly has a bright future ahead. “When I wake up I cannot wait to get to work” said Cameron. Responsibilities are already growing for Cameron who now opens up the workshop early in the morning to ensure all is ready for the day ahead. Credit can also be given to Rocco and Grace from Rock Hard Motors, who as employers, have shown absolute dedication to Cameron in his pursuits to work within the automotive industry. Without getting too technical, diesel engines work at higher compression ratios than most petrol engines and are therefore built very strongly. This fact alone makes diesel engines a great deal more durable than a petrol engine of the same size and capacity. This also explains why you see so many diesel powered cars with hundreds of thousands of kilometres on the odometer. The drag car build was undertaken as a test for Rocco and his team as they were expanding their services to include panel and paint, building on their already proficient mechanical expertise. The entire four and a half year build was completed in-house by the Rock Hard Motors team and the Torana boasts some very impressive modifications. The car is running a small block Chev V8 engine which puts out 650 horsepower. The team also fitted a custom transmission and fabricated a 9-inch diff. The Torana is also rolling on Mickey Thompson Drag Radial's. The car has only recently been finished and is still going through an extensive testing and tuning phase. The end goal is to enter drag racing competitions and race the car regularly. Whilst in the testing and tuning phase, Rocco had the privilege of taking the Torana to Calder Park Raceway to put it through its paces. Initial results were very impressive to say the least. In its third pass, the Torana clocked a 10.1 second quarter mile and from start to 200m, reached a speed of 176km/ph. The build would not have been possible without the input of Valvoline and Century Batteries who assisted in getting the project off the ground through sponsorship support. The build is testament to the Rock Hard Motors team and certainly highlights their expertise in panel, paint and mechanical work. We look forward to some impressive competition results once racing begins in earnest.
