DEAN’S MESSAGE
The Weight of Barnacles on Our Soul
“Personal
bitterness and
cynicism
which poisons
thoughts and
behavior,
depriving us
of inner peace
of mind and
body.”
It breaks your heart to hear
of someone who has just
been diagnosed with
“terminal cancer.” Friends
will say if they would have
just gone to the doctor to
check out that lump sooner,
or see about that strange
pain in the lower back, the
cancer may have been caught
at an earlier stage and
perhaps successfully treated.
It is the same with our
spiritual health. We let the
negative weights of sin of
misdirected living
accumulate on our souls and
slowly we feel that we are
dying emotionally and
spiritually. If only we could
have been treated in time. If
only… we unburdened
ourselves to a qualified
spiritual father for a
diagnosis, perhaps we would
not feel so disconnected to
our true self neither to God
nor experience spiritual
death.
St. Paul in his letter to the
Hebrews, chapter 12:1 says:
“Let us lay aside every
weight and sin which clings
so closely, and let us run
with perseverance the race
that is set before us.” The
holy scriptures often
describe our presence in this
life as a journey or a race.
Our race or journey is
interrupted by the negative
weights and cares of life.
This can be compared to the
great ships that ply the
oceans. Over short periods
of time barnacles accumulate
on the bottoms of all ships
and become a multimillion
dollar headache for ship
owners. No bigger than
walnuts, they can slow down
a ship weighing thousands of
tons, within six months, after
it goes into water. A vessel
may acquire 2 or 3 inches of
these barnacles. The layer can
weigh literally over 100 tons
on the big tankers and reduce
the ship’s speed by more than
10 percent. Like ships, we
can, as individuals, on our
own journey of life
accumulate spiritual barnacles
that slow down our full
potential and prevent us from
fully using our God given
gifts and talents. We become
burdened, and misspend our
spiritual energy. Left
unchecked, undiagnosed, and
untreated, our journey is
dragged down and becomes
misdirected. The cost to our
soul is indeed heavy.
What are the “barnacles” that
slow us down and cause
spiritual illness? Here are a
couple of symptoms and
barnacles that cling to us:
Personal bitterness and cynicism
which poisons thoughts and
behavior, depriving us of inner
peace of mind and body.
Unconfessed and undealt with past
sins, which cling to us and dwell in
our conscience, manifesting
themselves in the fear of being
exposed. The negativity and weight
of guilt.
Again, St. Paul
gives us a whole list of
spiritual barnacles in his letter
to the Galatians 5:19-21. Here
are some that he highlights:
immorality, impurity, idolatry,
strife, jealousy, anger,
selfishness and envy.
What is required is spiritual
surgery through confession
and repentance. To us
Orthodox Christians whose
spiritual tradition is
sacramental, nothing can
replace the Sacrament of
Confession and repentance
in the presence of a
“spiritual physician”, one’s
priest or qualified spiritual
father. Lent is a perfect
time to rid ourselves of
the barnacles of sin that
cling to us. Take
advantage of the
sacrament of confession
offered by our church. Let
us prepare for Pascha with
our ship, the soul, clean of
all encumbrances, so we can
experience the resurrection
of our Lord with a clear
conscience.
Here is a short prayer one
can pray to begin the
process: “Lord I know I
have the barnacles of sin
clinging to my soul. I am
often unable to see them
because I fear looking into
my own heart. I feel the
drag and sense the heavy
weights in my spiritual life.
Help me to acknowledge
their existence Lord, and to
bring them to you in honest
confession and repentance.
Cleanse me as I run the race
of life, always heading for
the goal of my high calling.
Amen.”

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
April 2009
After the spiritually intense
period of our Great Lent,
we are preparing ourselves
for the Holy Week and the
fundamental message of
the Feast of the
Resurrection of the Lord
Jesus Christ.
This is the most sacred of
Feasts in our Church, when
we gather together in joy
and agape, celebrating the
presence of the Risen Lord
in our midst, and singing
the triumphant hymn
“Xristos Anesti – Christ
is Risen”.
During the month of
March we had several
occasions to be proud of
our youth. We started out
by honoring our dance
groups and their directors
for the outstanding
performances and awards
they received at the 2009
FDF. We also had a
wonderful program from
our Greek School
celebrating the Greek
Independence Day.
Kudos to all and thank you
for all you do for the
Cathedral. We are very
proud of you!
As the Holy Week rapidly
approaches, I would like to
remind you about the
Church religious services
which recall the Passion,
Crucifixion and
Resurrection of Christ,
and are conducted each
morning and evening
throughout Holy Week.
The complete schedule can
be found in a different
column. This year we will
hold our Ministry Faire
Day, Palm Sunday on the
platea after Liturgy. Come
join us for food, fun, and
information about how you
can participate in our
ministies.
On Easter Sunday, we will
be celebrating our
traditional Easter picnic at
Brookside Park in
Pasadena with traditional
Greek food and pastries,
music, dancing, and
fellowship for family and
friends.
Please support the tradition
that began 87 year ago.
Parking is free; we kept the
admission very low, so you
can feel free to bring your
family and friends to the
park to celebrate Pascha in
the most traditional way.
I would like to take the
opportunity to thank John

Pappas and Tony Dres
for all their perseverance in
securing the park from the
City of Pasadena and
organizing the event.
Thank you to Stephanie
Caiopoulos-Lubian for all
her hard work in preparing
the flyers and the volunteer
forms, to Karen Sarames
for coordinating the
volunteers, to Mrs. Ann
Pappas for all her help
with the food and
beverages and to our
Office Staff for their
support and diligent work.
We are in great need of
additional volunteers to
work for 1-2 hours at the
picnic in different booths.

Elections for the New Board of
Directors will be held at the
date, time and place
mentioned above. In order to
vote in this election, you must
be a member in good standing
in accordance with the Bylaws
of Philoptohos as follows:
Eligibility to Vote: Members
who have fulfilled financial
commitment to the Chapter
for the current year, prior to
the election, are eligible to
vote. New members may vote
if enrolled at least three (3)
months prior to the election
meeting. All candidates
seeking election to the Board
of Directors must qualify in
accordance with the Bylaws
as follows: In order to be a
candidate for election to the
Board of Directors, the full
member must have been a
member in good standing
with the parish and chapter
for a period of at least one full
year prior to the date of the
election to the Chapter Board
and must have attended a
minimum of four (4) meetings
held in the previous year. All
candidates must be present at
the election meeting unless
reasonable cause for such
absence is provided. A
member is qualified to serve
on the Board of directors of
one chapter only.
Please make every effort to
attend this meeting. The
future of your Philoptohos
Chapter depends on you.
Dear Philoptohos Ladies:
Please remember that the April 30th Evening Meeting has been changed.
It will now be held on Sunday, May 3rd, 2009 immediately after church in
the St Basil’s Room in order to accommodate all of our members who
cannot attend either the weekday or the evening meetings. Please note
that this is the last meeting before the May 21, 2009 Philoptohos
Elections.
Being mindful of the difficult economic situation that our world is
experiencing, the Board decided to change the venue for the Mother’s Day
Luncheon this year from the Beverly Wilshire to the Universal Sheraton
Hotel, which is also a beautiful complex. We will thus be able to lower the
ticket price to help our members, their families, and friends attend the
lovely luncheon that will take place on Saturday, May 9th, 2009 in honor of
one of the nicest ladies in our Cathedral parish, Helene Ballas.
Our board unanimously elected Helene as Mother of the Year 2009. She
was a most worthy candidate because of her great devotion to Saint
Sophia. Helene was born in Los Angeles and raised in a traditional
Greek-American household with strong Greek Orthodox roots. All of her
family were devoted members of both “San Julian Street” church and of
their beloved Saint Sophia Cathedral. Helene is mother to three daughters
and a yiayia to nine lovely children; she is adored by family and friends
alike.
We are happy this year to honor the many accomplishments of Helen
Ballas. A member of the church choir since her youth, Helene has always
been actively involved in the life of our church, offering countless
volunteer hours at every event and project that we have. Currently serving
as a board member, Helene has not only been an active member of
Philoptohos for many years, but she has also been an active member of
the Daughters of Penelope. Congratulations to you, Helene, for your
many accomplishments

Lent, Holy Week, and Easter is yet another time in our life’s journey to “fall in love” with The Lord. Seek
