WELCOME
TYLER STALEY, EVENT MANAGER
H
ello and welcome to the 2013 GM Nationals! As the
new event manager for 2013, I cannot describe how
excited I am to be hosting this fantastic show. For my
first year here at the GM Nationals, I have decided to
focus on a particularly interesting car in GM’s history
— the family of Turbo Buicks produced from 1978 to
1987. These cars brought a new era of performance to
the masses, and they have been a favorite of mine for
years. 2013 is an important milestone for this family of
cars, as it marks 35 years of the start of the program,
and a little more than 25 years since the last Grand
National rolled off the assembly line. I hope everyone
will enjoy these unique cars during the show. I also
hope you enjoy the special guests and activities I have
planned for this year’s show, including special guest
Bobby Allison and the autocross rides being provided
by Detroit Speed and UMI Performance.
Being able to claim “I’m a gearhead” is something
all of us are proud to say. The fact that a gearhead can
stand and enjoy listening to an engine idle, or find
beauty in the curves and lines of a car, makes this
hobby and its crowd incredibly unique. I’m proud
to say I will always be a car nut, and it is an amazing
opportunity to work with a group of people who
love cars they way I do. This is not just a car show,
but a gathering of like-minded enthusiasts who love
everything there is about the automobile. Without
enthusiasts like you, these kinds of shows would not
exist, so I sincerely thank you for your support. I look
forward to meeting and speaking with the people who
helped to make this show a great destination for GM
fans. Have a fun and safe weekend, and thanks for
coming to the 2013 Carlisle GM Nationals. I’d love to
hear your opinions about the event. Please take a few
minutes to complete the survey on our website.

THE CHEVY BOWTIE — BUILDING BRAND LOYALTY FOR DECADES
T
here are no more devoted car people than GM
lovers. Over the years, GM’s products, from trucks
to wagons to muscle cars and Corvettes, have grown
with us. It seems like once you get the addiction, it
sticks with you, and there’s always a cool car from the
General — both old and new — to fill whatever need
you might have. By dealing in sheer volume, GM has
made it really easy to be brand-loyal.
While I’ve owned a lot of different cars from
different manufacturers over the years, I’ve been a
GM guy since day one, thanks to a family that’s been
all GM since before I was born. My dad’s first car
was a black ’56 Chevy 210 on slicks. He later bought
a ’68 SS 396 Camaro, a ’69 SS 396 El Camino, and a
’70 Chevelle SS 454 LS6. My mom had a ’78 Firebird
in bright yellow. We had old Chevy and GMC trucks
around when I was a kid, and every car we had while I
was growing up wore a bowtie on the grille, too.
I’m sure a lot of you can identify with that — after
all, this is one of the largest all-GM events in the
country. If you’re here, you’ve got a love for the cars
that made General Motors legendary, and you’re in the
best place to see a little bit of everything the company
has built over the years. From vintage classics all the
way through modern Corvettes and muscle, it’s here
this weekend.
American Car Collector magazine covers Chevrolets, Buicks, Cadillacs, Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs and
GMCs sold at auction in every issue. If you’re at all
interested in what your car, or a car you’d like to own,
might be worth, you owe it to yourself to check out
a copy. Pick up a free issue at Vendor Services, Guest
Services, or at the Food Court, and check out our ad in
this guide for a special subscription offer.
And above all, have fun this weekend!

BOBBY ALLISON
Special Guest Bobby Allison
Meet NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Bobby Allison
on Saturday and see his Miller High Life Buick in
Building T. Join us in celebrating the 25th anniversary
of his victory in the 1988 Daytona 500. His son Davey
finished second in that race, marking the only time
in race history that a father/son duo took the top two
spots. See him in Building T from 10 a.m. to noon.
More on page 14.
Special Guest Dennis Kirban
Dennis Kirban, the legendary Turbo Buick and
Hurst memorabilia collector, will be presenting two
seminars on Saturday at the Carlisle GM Nationals.
Kirban started selling parts for GTOs in the late ’70s
and later moved on to the Turbo Buicks of the ’80s.
Since 1987, Kirban has been a go-to source for Turbo
Buick parts, advice and even the cars themselves.
Kirban’s shop is located in Plumsteadville, PA, and is
a hot spot for many Turbo Buick enthusiasts. Kirban
has been highly regarded as one of the most knowledgeable sources of Turbo Buick information in the
industry, and he carries a full line of quality products
for this family of cars. Kirban will offer two seminars
on Saturday of the GM Nationals. Be sure to visit his
website, KirbanPerformance.com, and browse the
hundreds of parts he has available for your car.
Special Guest Andrew Filippone Jr.
Independent filmmaker Andrew Filippone Jr.
will be a special guest this year at the GM Nationals.
Filippone was the producer, director and editor of
the documentary film “Black Air: The Buick Grand
National Documentary.” The film was started in
January of 2009 and finished in December of 2012.
Filippone made the documentary out of his own
interest and based it around the uniqueness of the
Grand National and its followers. Filippone will
be fielding questions about his film and recording
interviews for the sequel. Don’t miss the chance to visit
his seminars and pick up this great addition to any
gearhead’s movie collection.
Diagnostics by Paul Koerner
Paul Koerner has been a certified GM technician
since 1997 and is fully trained in the entire line of GM

cars. He will present seminars to help you with all of
your GM diagnostic questions and needs.
Cacklefest
Bruce Larson, a local drag-racing legend, will start
his USA-1 Camaro and Corvette while the crowd
listens to the roar of his famous dragsters and smells
the “fuel.” Even better, a few lucky drag fans will get to
sit in the seats while he disturbs the peace. See Bruce
and his cars under a tent along Duke’s Boulevard.

BOBBY ALLISON: RACING LEGEND
My Morning with Bobby Allison
By Mike Garland
O
ur celebrity guest this weekend, Bobby Allison, is
very special. He’s a loving father, husband and a
racing legend. He’s also a kind man and a religious
man. Bobby Allison may remind you of your dad, your
grandfather or your best friend and Bobby Allison is
someone that I had the chance to spend a morning
with on April 8, 2013.
Sometime in early March, an idea popped into my
head that in order to best promote Bobby’s visit to
Carlisle, I should travel to North Carolina and speak
with him face-to-face. I traded countless e-mails
with his daughter, Bonnie Allison-Farr, I compiled a
ridiculously long list of questions and I panicked up
until the very last second as to how I’d film the session.
After all, I am just one man and TV production wasn’t
my educational focus in college. I’ve seen a few people
do the “one-man band” thing, so I thought why not …
can’t be that hard. FYI, it’s not easy.
The day before the interview, I was walking up and
down pit row at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia
in front of that day’s Sprint Cup race. Bonnie advised
that I should call his house and provide an update as
to my Monday schedule. She noted that I might get
the machine because Bobby and his wife have church
commitments. First, how cool is that? I was calling
Bobby Allison’s house! I grew up watching NASCAR
in the ’80s with my dad. I remember names like Gant,
Waltrip, Petty, Yarborough, Richmond, Earnhardt,
Wallace, Baker and, of course, Allison — Bobby and
Davey. As I was leaving this message, I thought about
how rewarding my work can be at times.
As Monday morning arrived, I phoned the Allison
home again to let them know I was coming. Judy, his
wife, answered and provided an audible to my plans.
She said that instead of coming by the house, that I
should meet him at a place called Memory Lane Auto
Museum in Mooresville. The location was a 60-minute
drive for me, a one-exit difference off I-77 for him and
as fate would have it, we pulled into the parking lot at
the same time. There I was, popping out of my rental
car and running over to him like we’ve known each
other for years. After all, we had business to tend to. I
gave him my card and he responded with his; which
was not only autographed but in general, much cooler
than mine.
After he and I set up my mobile studio within the
14

museum, that’s right, he helped me … I proceeded
to ask him my list of 42 questions over the span of 90
minutes. His stories were amazing. We discussed his
start in Florida, his move to Alabama, how the name
“The Alabama Gang” came around, safety within
NASCAR today, his flirtation with the Indy Car series
and so much more. Out of respect, I did not ask about
the major tragedies in his life, and there were many.
He lost two sons, had his career ended by a horrific
accident at Pocono and he and Judy even divorced for
a bit. With all the amazing aspects of his career, why
rehash the darker times in his life?
We did discuss the Pocono wreck because it has
significance related to what should have been a great
career highlight. As Bobby told me the story about the
accident, he shared that because of it, he still has no
recollection of he and his late son Davey finishing first
and second respectively at the 1988 Daytona 500. It’s
been 25 years almost to the day (June 19, 1988) that
his accident at Pocono nearly took his life, ended his
career and mentally erased the greatest achievement a
father/son racing duo could hope for.
Bobby noted, “I had memory loss from the crash at
Pocono and I do not remember 1988 NASCAR racing.
I keep hoping that the memory will come back to me.
I understand it was a pretty neat deal. I’ve watched the
race and I really enjoy watching it, but it looks like a
movie to me. I don’t get any feeling back when I see it
but I really hope I do get that memory back some day.”
Two more great things that I took away from this
adventure were a comment Bobby made and one
made by Buz McKim, historian for the NASCAR Hall
of Fame in Charlotte. First, when I asked Buz about
the family tragedies, he told me “Bobby’s never been
negative. He’s been asked time and again if he ever
talks to God about the bad stuff. He doesn’t because
he’d have to ask God about the good stuff too. He has
a very positive attitude and realizes that this is life and
you have to deal with. He’s just an amazing guy.”
Finally, I asked Bobby what people should expect
when they meet him. His response was simply stated,
“None of us are really strangers, we’re just friends that
haven’t met.”
So meet an old friend here at Carlisle and enjoy the
full series of interviews online by clicking the YouTube
channel of the Carlisle GM Nationals.

The Turbo Buick Offers A New Take On Muscle
By Tyler Staley
I
’ve been a fan of muscle since I was
13. When I helped my dad restore
his 1968 Ford Torino GT, there was
a sudden passion instilled in me that
never left. I found the raw power of
a V8, the smell of premium gas, and
the rumbling exhaust all too enticing
to ignore. For the longest time, I
always thought that muscle cars had
officially died in the early 1970s,
never to really be resurrected…at
least in the traditional sense.
As my enthusiasm for cars
continued, I began to research
and learn about other American
cars with unique histories and
backgrounds. One car I found
particularly amazing was that of
the Turbo Regal family of Buicks
in the 1980s. The most famous of
these cars were the Grand National
and the GNX, but all the cars in this
family were impressive. The fact that
a turbocharged six-cylinder engine
could outrun almost anything in the
1980s was fascinating enough, but it
was a Buick! Rarely is Buick viewed
as the performance-oriented type of
car brand. However, Buick certainly
made itself a brand to be reckoned
with in the 1980s. In an era of
lackluster performance and strangulating emissions regulations, a boxy
Buick with six cylinders took on the
role of a new type of muscle car.
The most popular of the Turbo
Regals was the Grand National,
and its performance and popularity
peaked in 1987. The Grand National,
with its all-black paint job, looked
like the guy with slicked-back hair
and a black leather jacket leaning
against the wall in high school —
someone you do not want to mess
with. Zero to 60 only took roughly
six seconds, and the Grand National
had 245 horsepower on tap and
enough torque to shift your internal
organs (355 ft-lb, to be exact). To
make things even more insane, the
1987 GNX, “the Grand National to
end all Grand Nationals,” pumped
out an incredible 276 horsepower
and 360 lb-feet of torque. The
formula for the GNX is simple: Air
is drawn into the McLaren-tuned
turbo six-cylinder engine, then the
boost builds, the rear tires burst
into flames, the driver smiles the
biggest smile in history, and the car
launches like a rocket to 60 mph in
merely 4.7 seconds. All of this from
a 3.8-liter engine, in a Buick, in the
1980s…who’d have thought?
Needless to say, the Turbo Buicks
were all very impressive cars, and
they redefined what muscle and
performance meant in the car world.
A car with only six cylinders and
a Buick badge became one of the
fastest production cars of the 1980s
— an amazing feat, if you ask me.

VENDOR PROFILE: TOTALLY STAINLESS
Event Manager Got His Start At This Local Family-Owned Business
By Mike Garland
W
hen it comes to automotive restoration, there
are tons of details to work out. You need to be
sure you have all the proper sheet metal, engine
components, the right suspension package, etc. One
thing many people may not consider right away,
however, is how to hold all of these parts onto their
car. This is where the crew from Totally Stainless Inc.
steps in with one of the widest selections of stainless
steel fasteners in the country. The business also
features a full machine shop for some of those tricky,
oddball fasteners that no one produces. Best of all, the
company has decades of combined experience, having
done work on multiple generations of cars and trucks
since its inception.
The founder and CEO, “Doc” Hammett, has been a
car nut since he was a child. Doc and his brothers were
always tinkering on something, and the world of cars
was familiar to him at an early age. As a mechanical
engineer and graduate of Penn State University, Doc
has acquired an immense amount of knowledge about
the automotive applications of stainless fasteners. Ask
why Doc chooses to only work with stainless steel and
the answer is simple.
“It doesn’t rust,” said Doc. “We have done some
great things product-wise, especially for the GM
market. Basically, we’ve been able to reproduce everything that GM has made with stainless steel and we
can provide something for everyone for model years
between 1941 and the late ’80s. Nuts, bolts and fittings,
if you can bolt and unbolt it, we have it.”
The small family-owned business has been
providing stainless fasteners for automotive restoration for around 20 years. Totally Stainless has a unique
take on automotive restoration, as the company sells
complete kits for a variety of vehicles and drive-train
parts. Working on a 1968 Camaro? Totally Stainless
has literally every nut, bolt and screw that goes on your
vehicle. Each part comes in neatly organized kits that
take the guesswork out of restoring your ride. Even
better, you can order fasteners that are OEM-style
and mimic the factory bolts. Do you also need bolts
for your engine, transmission, suspension and rear?
Totally Stainless has those bases covered too.
Totally Stainless is special for a few other reasons,
too. First, they are local and have business operations
in Aspers, PA (about 22 miles from Carlisle). Secondly,
they have a very special meaning to one person onsite
20

this weekend, GM event manager Tyler Staley. Staley
was an employee of Doc’s. Doc and Tyler’s father have
been friends for years, too. Tyler worked for Doc as
a salesperson, tech advisor, machinist’s assistant and
just about any other position you could imagine at the
company.
“I began working at Totally Stainless shortly after I
turned 16,” noted Staley. “During my time with them,
nearly seven years, I gained more and more responsibilities related to sales, technical advice and even
machinist work. Needless to say, Totally Stainless gave
me a ton of knowledge about the automotive industry,
and I am glad I had a chance to work there.”
“Tyler started with us when he was in high school,
working after school and during the summer,” noted
Doc. “He is a smart guy that works well with others
and is very bright and outgoing. For someone that
went to college and graduate school with a focus on
history and the goal to become a teacher, it’s great to
see he’s landed a job doing something he’s passionate
about. When we worked together, he traveled with me
to many of the 12 annual events we do, and he proved
that he’s the right person for the job he has.”
As a car kid and now car guy, it’s only natural that
Tyler would find work doing something he loves,
both with Doc and now at Carlisle. Ultimately, it is
from Doc and his business that Tyler gained so much
knowledge about the automotive hobby and industry.
In fact, because of the Doc/Tyler/Carlisle Events
relationship, Totally Stainless has purchased five spaces
for the event this weekend. Keep in mind that while
Totally Stainless has been onsite for our Spring and
Fall events for many years, this weekend marks the
first time since at least 2004 that they’ve been part of a
specialty event. Their presence this weekend is a direct
result of their belief in both the event and Tyler Staley
as its new leader.
So, if you are having trouble finding a certain
fastener for your car, or simply have some questions
about which bolts go where, look no further than
Totally Stainless. With a huge knowledge base and an
impressive array of kits and products, Totally Stainless
is a great place to find just about anything for your
project. You can reach them at 1-800-767-4781, visit
their website at www.totallystainless.com, or just talk
to them in person under the grandstand (Building Z)
in spaces 23-27.

BELL FAMILY RACING
Father and Daughters Share Passion for Hobby
By Mike Garland
T
he automotive world is primarily male-dominated.
From car owners showing at Carlisle today and
at our other events, to the automotive and racing
world as a whole, the numbers strongly support the
fact that more men are active within the hobby/sport
than women. The good thing is, numbers are also
showing that more females are getting involved, both
here at Carlisle and within the racing community.
Nationally, Danica Patrick leads the way from a female
recognition standpoint. Other female drivers include
Debrah “Medusa” Miceli (monster truck driver),
Ashely Force-Hood (NHRA Racer) and Pippa Mann
(Indy Car driver). Closer to home, Joy Abdalla is an
enthusiast who shows a car that won a best-of-show
award at Carlisle Performance & Style in 2012, plus
P&S overall featured a display dedicated to female
owners/enthusiasts just last month.
All of these names and points of reference have
been used to set up this particular story, a story about
a man named Rick Bell and his daughters, all three of
whom race. Rick’s three kids range in age and interests.
Amber is 11 and races a Junior Dragster, Allison is
19 and competes in a 1968 Camaro dragster, while
Heather is 23 and also races the Camaro. Amber and
Allison are active this season, while Heather is taking a
year off for family reasons.
In knowing what they do now, it’s fair to wonder
how the kids got to where they are today. The story can
date back to Rick’s career and a chance evening in front
of the TV. When he did race, Rick would bring his girls
24
2013 CARLISLE GM NATIONALS
CarlisleEvents.com
to the track. They always enjoyed watching races and
when Heather was born, Rick slowed up a bit. Around
this same time, in 2003, the movie “Right on Track”
came out. Between having been to Rick’s races and
enjoying the movie, the girls wanted to give it a go. So
… give it a go Rick did.
At first, Heather and Allison shared a car, and then
in 2003, when the Bell family started participating in
NHRA/IHRA Junior Drag Racing, each girl got her
own Junior Dragster. At that point, dad decided it was
time to send them off to drag-racing school, Doug
Foley’s Drag Racing School, to be exact.
Over the years, Rick’s kids have become quite good
at racing. In 2012, ESPN filmed Amber for a special
E:60 segment. Allison is a two-time National Team
Champion, and Heather has won one championship.
In a sport where cars can exceed 300 m.p.h. (these
cars don’t), what does Rick think of what his kids
do? “I totally support the girls in their drag-racing
endeavors. It is safer than many other sports and we
get to participate as a family.”
While most races take place at their home track of
Maple Grove Raceway near Reading, PA, he and his
girls travel quite a bit, too. “We compete at many other
tracks like Beaver Springs, Numidia, Mason Dixon,
Bristol Dragway (Tennessee), Cecil County, Maryland
and many others,” added Rick. “It’s so fun as a dad to
be able to spend time with my girls doing what we all
do.”

The Capital City GTO Club started with just three members in 2005 and
grew to well over 100 as of last year. Club members hail from all around
the nation’s capital, plus West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and
Pennsylvania. CCGTO’s first visit to Carlisle as a club was in 2007 and since
then, they’ve been racking up the awards and recognition. They’ve been one
of the top three clubs as part of the Club Challenge annually, including top
honors in 2013.

to Carlisle’s brand-new event — the GM Nationals. Since then, the club has
been known as the Greater Northeast Impala SS Clubs (GNISSC). GNISSC

The Mid Atlantic Fiero Owners Association is a tight-knit group of
car owners who enjoy both working on and showing their cars. The Mid
Atlantic Fiero Owners Association, or MAFOA for short, is one of the
oldest Fiero clubs on the East Coast, having been in existence since the early
’90s. The group sponsors several shows and activities throughout the year
and attends functions of other Fiero clubs in the area. Anyone looking for a
place to come and enjoy good conversation about the Fiero, look no further
than the MAFOA.

Heacock Classic Insurance
It’s no secret that American car values have been on the
move over the past few years, both up and down. It pays for
buyers, sellers and owners to know exactly what’s going on
in the marketplace at any given time, and that information
is exactly what American Car Collector magazine does best.
Each issue of ACC contains more than 100 market reports on
individual cars that have appeared at auction, with published
sold prices highlighted by on-site evaluations that cover
condition, originality and options. Not only do we tell you
what a car sold for, we help you understand why. Every issue
also includes in-depth profiles on cars from GM, Ford and
Mopar, joined by Hot Rod, Race Car, Corvette and Truck.
Whether you have one car or 20, ACC has the information
that’ll keep you on top of what’s happening in the American
collector-car world. Subscribe at americancarcollector.com.
Have you ever wondered what collector-car insurance is
all about? It’s simple: “passion.” Heacock Classic Insurance
knows that collector cars receive better care and are driven
less than the family vehicle, therefore, classic car insurance
rates are lowered. Our goal is to offer a custom, low-cost
program designed to fit your needs. Collector car insurance
from Heacock Classic provides “Agreed Value” coverage,
full coverage during restoration, coverage for modifications, and your right to choose your own repair shop if your
car is damaged. You also get to choose zero deductible and
automatically get $50,000 coverage for 30 days when you
purchase a new classic car. After you request a quote, a status
report is usually ready within 24 hours. Then we will contact
you to review it and hopefully activate your new insurance
policy. It’s simple, easy and the best way to properly protect
your investment. Call us today at 800-678-5183 or online at

RockAuto.com
RockAuto ships thousands of auto parts from over 200
manufacturers to customers on every continent except
Antarctica — including APO/FPO addresses. The RockAuto
catalog is updated daily with mechanical parts such as brake
pads and shock absorbers, body parts such as bumpers and
mirrors, interior trim such as door handles and carpets, and
major assemblies like steering gears, CV axles, engine long
blocks, and complete transmissions. There are no mechanics
on staff (RockAuto is a store, not a repair shop) but service
manuals are available to help customers learn how to perform
a repair. The RockAuto catalog is expanding constantly.
Someday, it may be possible to build an entire car using parts
from RockAuto!
