for Global Health
BIO Ventures for Global Health
BIO Ventures for Global Health (BVGH) is a results-oriented nonprofit organization dedicated to solving
global health challenges by forming connections between people, resources, and ideas. BVGH does
this through a range of services and programs.
Collaboration
Cross-sector, international collaborations are fundamental to the development of new biomedical
products. BVGH employs its unique partnering model to develop meaningful collaborations with
clearly defined roles, responsibilities, and deliverables.
WIPO Re:Search
WIPO Re:Search is led by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in partnership with BVGH
and several leading pharmaceutical companies. The Consortium’s aim is to accelerate drug, vaccine,
and diagnostic development for neglected tropical diseases, malaria, and tuberculosis.
WIPO Re:Search Collaboration Map
As the Partnership Hub Administrator, BVGH examines scientists’ current research and proposes novel
collaboration opportunities with other Members. BVGH also fields requests from researchers, identifies
Member organizations able to fulfill these requests, and helps forge mutually beneficial collaborations.
Upon establishing a collaboration, BVGH provides partnership support and alliance management to
ensure the project is successful.
Supporting Research and Development
Research and development requires knowledge, training, infrastructure, technology, and funding.
BVGH’s work expands access to expertise, resources, and funding.
BVGH FundFinder
BVGH FundFinder is a comprehensive database of open and
upcoming funding opportunities relevant to neglected
infectious disease research and product development.
Critical information about each award is categorized and
summarized, streamlining the search for funding.
In addition to the awards database, BVGH also identifies
partners to strengthen award eligibility, and provides
introductions to funders for application guidance. This
program also includes the BVGH FundFinder Newsletter, a
quarterly newsletter highlighting grants, profiling funders,
and presenting funding success stories.

BVGH coordinates and manages the short-term placement of
biopharmaceutical company employees at research institutes in Africa. During
these placements, company Fellows work alongside the institutions’ researchers,
sharing their skills, demonstrating techniques, and presenting seminars focused
on industry’s processes and approaches to research and product development.
BVGH places gently-used laboratory equipment sourced from
biopharmaceutical companies at biomedical research institutions in Africa.
These donated equipment are instrumental to building local drug discovery
capacity and in-country expertise.
AAPS – BVGH Africa eLearning Initiative
BVGH and the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) have partnered to bring
eCourses and webinars, as an eLearning Initiative, at no cost, to select research institutions in
sub-Saharan Africa. The eCourses are comprehensive online offerings that provide the convenience of
self-paced learning in numerous subjects in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical sciences. The
course material was developed by top researchers in the field and is intended to provide practical
perspectives from industry and academic scientists with expertise in the subject area.
The eLearning Initiative has proven to be a multifaceted tool offering both educational material as well
as a structured model for learning. One participating institute has attributed significant changes to
their curriculum to the eCourses and the learning progression gleaned from the different modules.
Reaching Stakeholders
The diverse and interdisciplinary nature of global health requires connecting with a broad group of
stakeholders to succeed. BVGH advertises and promotes global health organizations and their
activities, as well as proactively organizes meetings focused on global health challenges and ideas.
Global Fungal Infection Forum
The Global Action Fund for Fungal Infections (GAFFI) partnered with BVGH to develop a report on the
burden of opportunistic fungal infections, funding, and gaps. For this, GAFFI and BVGH hosted the
Global Fungal Infection Forum. Over 60 experts and representatives from more than 30 countries
gathered to align efforts to improve management of fungal infections. A global roadmap, 95-95 by
2025, to reduce the burden of fungal diseases was developed based on input from the meeting.
African Pavilion
BVGH organizes the African pavilion at the BIO International Convention. The pavilion showcases the
innovations and life science capabilities of research organizations from the African continent. BVGH
coordinates the pavilion, panel sessions centered on Africa and its healthcare needs, a global health
presentation by BVGH President, a media event featuring BIO President and CEO, James Greenwood,
and a private bilateral meeting with biopharmaceutical companies and key African representatives.
Customized Engagement
BVGH works with an organization to develop a customized plan to participate in global health
activities and facilitate engagement opportunities.
BVGH Membership Program
The BVGH Membership Program offers Members a package of services to support and advance their
global health activities. It is built on three pillars: Strategic Engagement, Knowledge & Reports, and
Advocacy & Awareness. A dedicated BVGH team works closely with each Member to understand their
priorities for partnerships, disease areas, and regions. Work is tailored within each of the three service
areas to create complementary deliverables supporting the Member’s objectives.

Knowledge and Reports
An organization’s understanding of its target regions, populations, and disease areas is essential.
BVGH develops reports describing the markets, landscapes, and regulatory environments of
interest to organizations.
Neglected Disease Product Pipelines
BVGH surveys the drug, diagnostics, and vaccines in use or in development for the management of
neglected diseases. BVGH reviewed the drug and diagnostic pipelines for the ten neglected
tropical diseases selected as priorities by Uniting to Combat NTDs in the London Declaration. BVGH
completed a similar survey of drugs and diagnostics for tuberculosis and malaria, as well as a
survey of drugs, diagnostics, and vaccines for Ebola virus disease.
Antimicrobial Resistance
BVGH prepared a report for the World Health Organization describing the product development
pipelines of antibiotics, anti-malarial drugs, and anti-tubercular drugs, as well as the pipelines for
diagnostics to detect antimicrobial drug resistance. An extensive survey of publically available
data, including primary sources and secondary sources, was conducted. A brief analysis
highlighting key findings and novel products was also developed. Finally, incentives and initiatives
to support R&D of antibiotic drugs and diagnostics to detect antibiotic resistance were identified
and summarized.

BVGH was founded in 2004 by the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) with financial and
in-kind support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and BIO.
“Millions of people in developing nations are suffering because they lack good health
care, including a full range of available therapies. The issues are complex, but we can
all agree on the need for higher levels of collaboration – both to invent new therapies
and to put a greater number of safe, effective medicines and vaccines within reach of
the people who need them.”
- Freda C. Lewis-Hall, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President, Pfizer
“The role of industry in improving global
health cannot be understated. We have
been, and must continue to be, leaders,
experts, innovators, and - most importantly partners in global efforts to reduce suffering
and burden of disease.”
-James Greenwood, President and CEO,
Biotechnology Innovation Organization
