Box 684, Dale, Indiana February 2013 Am I Listening? How can my Lent be fruitful? Greetings, This past week, I heard the Responsorial Psalm at a weekday Mass that said, “If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.” It is Psalm 95. The response reminded me of a particular time or place, and then it dawned on me that we usually hear this response during the season of Lent. I guess I had deaf ears that morning. Was God speaking to me? Maybe I need to listen to God in the quiet, others, friends, family, and enemies. We live in a fast paced society with work, school, activities, internet, and all the other technological devices that occupy our time. Usually after Christmas, it begins to slow down a little, but not this year. There is always something happening. We definitely live busy lives. Am I listening? However, I am in charge of my life, and I can make a change, but will I? The season of Lent will start on Ash Wednesday, February 13th. This is a great opportunity to make a change in our lives to improve ourselves, but more importantly, to change the inner-self that will make us better Christians. What is it in my life that needs to change, so I can become a better follower? I have a list of things I need to do for improvement. Do I want to change or is my heart hardened? That response continues to reflect in my mind. Who is leading, God or me? We have many opportunities and resources during Lent to make a difference in our lives. God wants us to soften our hearts a little at a time, so we stay on track. If you are like me, big lists remain big lists and nothing gets accomplished. God wants us to take it a little at a time and include the Divine along in the journey. Saints were not made in one day, but it took a lifetime. They continued to improve year after year by softening their hearts. We each need to ask ourselves before Lent, “What one thing do I need to change in my life to make me a better person in Jesus Christ?” Concentrate on the one discipline and don’t stress out by counting the number of days in Lent, but take it one day at a time. The journey is long enough but don’t do it alone. Include Jesus on your journey for courage and strength. Then you will recognize a different person and rise with Him at Easter. Lent then becomes fruitful. “If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.” Have a fruitful season, 1 The Hilltop Herald | February 2013 | St. Joseph Catholic Church OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE PROCESSION AND MASS December 9, 2012 2 The Hilltop Herald | February 2013 | St. Joseph Catholic Church Ash Wednesday Services We will have four Ash Wednesday Services in our community. The Holy Name meetings start after the 6:30 am Mass on Sunday and are held in the parish center. Please try to attend a few, even one, of the meetings on the following dates: February 10th, March 10th and April 14th. The annual dues of $5.00 may be paid anytime to Richard Betz. 7:30 AM @ Mary Help of Christians 4:00 PM @ St. Nicholas 6:00 PM @ St. Joseph -- Bilingual 7:30 PM @ Mary Help of Christians Vestments and Funeral Pall Ash Wednesday is also a day of fasting and abstinence. We received several gifts to the parish from the families of parishioners who passed away. We used these donations to purchase a matching white chasuble and a dalmatic for the priest and deacon. This was in memory of Leonard and Rosalinda Cassidy. We also purchased a matching funeral pall, in memory of James and Elizabeth Hardesty. We thank the families for their gifts to the parish. Let us keep these parishioners and their families in our prayers. Lenten Almsgiving During the Lenten season, we will be supporting several charities as a part of our almsgiving. Similar to last year, we invite you to pick up a Rice Bowl and participate in helping the poor with your sacrifices. This program will support the Catholic Relief Services. When disaster strikes locally or abroad, Catholic Relief Services are there to give aid to those in need. We also will take second collections during Lent to support charities such as: North Spencer Community Action, St. Vincent DePaul, Haiti parishes, CRS, and other diocesan collections. The donations will be divided at the end of the Lenten season and given to these charities. Let us be in solidarity with the poor when we make those sacrifices. 24 HOUR ADORATION SCHEDULE February 7th/8th @ St. Nicholas March 7th/8th @ St. Joseph April 4th/5th @ Mary, Help of Christians Tri-Parish Anniversary Dinner: Our annual Tri-Parish Anniversary Dinner will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church’s Parish Center on Saturday, February 9th starting at 5:30 pm. Anyone celebrating an anniversary in 2013 in 5 year increments such as 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. or 50 years or more is invited to attend. Please call one of the three parish offices with your name if you did not receive your invitation or to RSVP. We look forward to celebrating your anniversary with you!! Food for the Poor Weekend We have invited a Food for the Poor priest to educate us on their ministry to the third world countries. A priest will celebrate the February 16th and 17th weekend Masses and relate to us about their ministry. When we were in Haiti, we saw many villages constructed by the ministry of Food for the Poor. We will not have a second collection for them, but they will have resources on how to support them. This is an opportunity to reflect on how we have been blessed. Thank you for your support. As you may or may not be aware, our focus is to inspire, re-energize, and revitalize our church for the future. Some of the recommendations proposed for our deanery are the number of priests (4) for our deanery and the number of Masses (3) for each priest on a weekend without the assistance of retired or foreign priests to serve on a weekly basis. Other recommendations are to link and merge parishes to combine resources, so the church can better minister and serve the people. These are some of the criteria that we are dealing with to restructure and to enhance our church for the future. The Bishop wants to keep his priests healthy, which is why the number of Masses are limited. Remember, these are only recommendations. We, as a group, are looking at creative ways and resources to assure the health of the priests and to make a viable church for the future. We have until March 31st to make recommendations to our Bishop for the Newburgh Deanery. Please pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance and understanding during this process. Roman Missal Beginning the First Sunday in Lent, we will implement the directives for the Roman Missal. The Roman Missal is our instruction on how we celebrate the Liturgy. The Church gives instruction for the wording, postures, gestures, ministers, and celebration of the Mass. We, as Catholics, pray with our bodies as making the sign of the cross, bowing to the altar, genuflecting to the tabernacle, bowing to the Eucharist, signing ourselves when the Gospel is proclaimed, and standing, sitting, and kneeling during Mass. Each gesture and posture is a sign of reverence and to assist us in deeper relationship with Jesus during the Liturgy. We only have a few changes to be in compliance with the directives. First, the kneeling posture during the whole Eucharistic prayer after the singing of the “Holy, Holy, Holy,” to the completion of the “Great Amen.” The kneeling posture was selected for this prayer by the bishops in the United States in order to emphasize the unity of this prayer, to respect the tradition of kneeling which had become common practice in the U.S. and to highlight the element of adoration which permeates portions of this text. Second, after communion a silent time of prayer should be taken. Third, a limited number of announcements should be made after the prayer of communion. These are the only changes we have to implement while the priest has other directives. Some of these implementations (kneelers at St. Nicholas) will require extensions which the bishop will grant. Our Liturgy calls for full, conscious and active participation and these norms are an avenue to enhance our awareness of Jesus’ presence during the Mass. Additional information on the Liturgy has been provided in our diocesan newspaper, “The Message,” and bulletin inserts to enhance our understanding of the Liturgy. Please take time to educate yourself on the Mass. Stations & Mass Every Friday in Lent, we will offer Stations and Mass at the site where the Lenten Dinners are served. We will begin the Stations at 4:30pm and Mass will immediately follow. We invite you to participate in these spiritual exercises then patronize the Lenten Dinners within our community. The sites are listed as follows: February 15th at Mary, Help of Christians February 22nd at St. Joseph March 1st at St. Nicholas March 8th at Mary, Help of Christians March 15th at St. Joseph March 22nd at St. Nicholas 4 The Hilltop Herald | February 2013 | St. Joseph Catholic Church Presentation to the Hispanic Community & Catholic Community of North Spencer Carry-in Luncheon La Parroquia de San Nicolás invita a todos a la dedicación y bendición del estandarte de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe al terminar la misa de 10:00 de la mañana el 10 de febrero en la iglesia de San Nicolás.
