Building Futures
2014 Annual Report Building Futures September 2015 Mission Oasis for Youth opens the door to housing, employment, education, and wellness for youth facing homelessness in the suburbs. Tools for stability and opportunities to thrive are provided through individualized case management, onsite supportive services and connections to housing and community resources. Vision Oasis for Youth is a vital community asset empowering all youth at risk of homelessness to believe in bright futures filled with hope, stability, and self-fulfillment. Dear Friends, As I reflect back on 2014, I am so thankful for the many ways that our community joined us to support young people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. It was an exciting year of change and growth in the lives of youth and at Oasis! The Oasis board of directors adopted a new strategic plan in 2014 with four broad goals: 1. Support youth experiencing homelessness by strengthening and expanding Oasis programs and by creating additional housing opportunities. 2. Grow Oasis’ capacity by expanding leadership, staffing, board and volunteers. 3. Increase community awareness of our services. 4. Continue to maintain financial stability and efficient use of resources. We have been hard at work to achieve these goals. Outreach to students at schools was expanded in 2014. We focused on employment supports, housing connections and deepening relationships with youth. In the fall we launched a search for our first executive director and were thrilled to hire Nicole Mills in March of this year. Nicole brings a wealth of experience in managing housing, outreach and supportive services for youth experiencing homelessness. We expanded the board and welcomed additional board committee members, bringing new talents and connections to the organization. To support this work, we have continued to build our financial capacity. And, as you might have noticed, we have a new logo! With the generosity and creative strategy work of Jay Miller and his amazing team at ImageHaus, we are pleased to adopt a more youthful logo. The brand captures the passion we have for providing pathways to stability for young people and the power of community that surrounds them. Oasis for Youth 2015 marks our fifth year of providing supports to youth facing homelessness in our suburbs. We are so grateful for your support these last five years, and are excited about the future. We look forward to continuing to partner with you in this vital work. 2200 West Old Shakopee Road With gratitude, Bloomington, MN 55431 952-512-2061 www.oasisforyouth.org www.facebook.com/oasisforyouth Andrea Knoll Oasis for Youth President We’re Building Futures! A Snapshot of Oasis Youth In 2014, Oasis served 165 individual youth who made more than 1,462 visits to the Resource Center or met with Oasis case managers at school. • 63% were female. Transgender youth are included as they identify. • 68% of the youth were between 18 and 22 years of age. • 83% were youth of color, who experience rates of homelessness at much greater rates than their white peers. • 22% of Oasis clients were pregnant and/or parenting youth, with the added challenge of childcare. During these first months at Oasis, I have been constantly energized by the responsiveness of the communities we serve. This is an exciting time. Increased funding of Minnesota’s Homeless Youth Act this year means that the legislature is committed to finding solutions to youth homelessness. The incredible support that Oasis receives from individual, foundation and corporate donors means that those living and working in our communities share that commitment. Thank you for your dedication to Oasis for Youth and for believing that all young people deserve support on their journeys, regardless of circumstance. • 55% of Oasis youth at intake had no income. • 40% of Oasis youth were completing high school or working toward a GED. Another 26% had their high school diploma or GED. No Shelter “I got enrolled in school, thanks to Oasis. I got my childcare thanks to my case manager at Oasis.” Transitional Living At-risk of Homelessness 24% 43% 26% Housing Status Statement of Activities and Changes in Net Assets Targeted Suburbs 71% 1 2 3 1 7% I look forward to building brighter futures for our youth in partnership with you. Nicole Mills Executive Director Unstable, Couch Hopping 2 I am thrilled to be Oasis for Youth’s first executive director. Since March, I’ve been hard at work building on the strategic relationships Oasis leadership developed over Oasis’ first five years. I envision Oasis leading a community that quickly and responsibly addresses the issues that lead to youth’s housing instability. Partnerships in housing, education, employment and wellness for youth in our suburban communities mean that we are well on our way to developing safety nets for our young people so they will never have to experience homelessness. 4 29% Other / Unknown Service Area For the years ended December 31, 2014 and 2013 2014 2013 Support and Revenue Contributions Government Grants Program Service Fees Interest and Other Income $186,887 $80,660 $5,021 $2,651 $159,614 $12,704 $11,023 $204 Total Revenue $275,219 $182,915 $165,381 $116,803 $19,567 $14,407 $13,831 $4,835 $199,355 $135,469 Expenses Program Services Support Services Management and General Fundraising Total Expenses Change in Net Assets Net Assets, Beginning of Year Net Assets, End of Year $75,864 $148,298 $224,162 $47,446 $100,852 $148,298 A Snapshot of Oasis Activity Housing: Over 160 referrals were made to housing programs, including 40 shelter referrals. She told me about this program in Bloomington, so I go on the bus with her, and went there. I’m glad I did cuz my life has made like a complete turn. I got enrolled into Job Corps, I got my certification in CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant). I’m getting some volunteer work as a CNA, and I’ll be working soon. I’ll be on my own and getting ready for college after a couple years.” Printing provided by Quantum Graphics. 2200 West Old Shakopee Road Bloomington, MN 55431 oasisforyouth.org
