The second largest city of
Slovenia (which was part of the
former Yugoslavia), Maribor is
located on the Drava River
which is an important tributary
of the Danube.
Historical sources first
documented a small settlement
close to a castle around the
middle of the 12th century. In
the year 1204, Maribor was
known as a marketplace and
fifty years later a city can be
found in old documents.
Prior to World War I, Maribor
was part of the Austrian/
Hungarian Kingdom and still
today, many citizens speak
German. In 1975, the Maribor
University was established.
Today, the Roman-Gothic
Cathedral is worth a visit as
much as the castle museum,
among many other interesting
and historical sites like the
Jewish Synagoge. Located on
the banks of the Drava River is
also the world’s oldest fruitbearing grapevine with an
estimated age of 400 years.
Over recent years, the Pohorje
Mountains, at whose foothills
Maribor rests, turned into a
popular relaxation and sports
hotspot, as well as a resort for
lovers of nature.
