Call to Worship —Based on 1 John 4-10
Minister: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Minister: In this is love, not that we loved God,
People: but that God loved us and sent God’s Son into the world
so that we might live through him.
Prayer of the Day

“These Treasured Children” PUER NOBIS NASCITUR Invitation to Confession
Prayer of Confession
God of mercy, you sent Jesus Christ to seek and save the lost. We confess that
we have strayed from you and turned aside from your way. We are misled by pride, for we see ourselves pure when we are stained, and great when we are small. We have failed in love, neglected justice, and ignored your truth. Have mercy, O God, and forgive our sin. Return us to paths of righteousness through Jesus Christ, our risen Savior. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy.
Assurance of Pardon
Minister: The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare to you, in the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. May the God of mercy, who forgives us all our sins, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, keep us in eternal life.
People:
Amen.

Worship Notes for June 14, 2015
Generally, our hymns on Sunday morning are selected with the view that they will build on the meaning of the scripture lessons and sermon. Today, however, they were chosen to honor two groups and an individual. Our first hymn, “These Treasured Children,” was chosen to honor the children and youth of our Sunday School program—as well as all the adults and young people who nurture and teach them so faithfully each week. Our second hymn, “Come Sing to God,” recognizes our Sanctuary Choir and Director (as well as our Kids and Youth Choirs and their Director) who sing to God’s glory so devotedly in worship most Sundays of the year. Finally, our last hymn memorializes a saint of our congregation whose resurrection we witnessed to yesterday, Edith Evelyn Jahier. “Blest be the tie that binds, Our hearts in Christian love, [For] perfect love and friendship reign, Through all eternity.”
—————————————————————————————–——————————————-
On this 11th Sunday of Ordinary Time in Year B of the Lectionary Cycle, we read three les-
sons on the issue of discernment. It is an issue that constantly confronts the people of God. How is one to understand what is really going on in the world? How is one to discriminate and make decisions that are faithful to God? What standards can realistically be applied to evaluate this or that option? The culture clearly has answers for questions like these. It is basically, a bottom-line mentality, which seeks quantifiable results. Every venture is scrutinized and evaluated, and the discerner looks for veri-
fiable outcomes that give proof of the success, partial success, or failure of the effort.
All of our three readings this morning warn about judging on the basis of outward appearances and declare that the people of God are given eyes that enable them to discriminate in new and different ways. The ways are not spelled out in detail, but that is the way faith operates. It never functions with-
out risk.
The experience of Samuel as he searches for a successor to Saul indicates how easily looks can be deceiving (1 Samuel, 15: 24—16: 13). Jesse’s eldest son, Eliab, seems the perfect prospect, until Samuel is advised that God does not judge according to outward appearances, but according to the hearts. Psalm 20 expresses the prayers of the people in behalf of the military ventures of the king, but remains quite clear that the obvious symbols of strength (chariots and horses) are not worthy of pride. Real hope lies only “in the name of the Lord our God” (Psalm 20: 7).
Our Gospel Lesson (Mark 4: 26-34) sounds the same note. We are enjoined to walk by faith, not by sight. The involvement of believers in the death of Christ includes a new standard of judgment. What better symbol for this than the mustard seed (Mark 4: 30-32). Though small and inconspicuous, it results in the greatest of all shrubs. Regarding God’s presence in human history, believers are not to be content with worldly symbols and outward appearances. The cross becomes the ultimate standard for discernment.

First Lesson
1 Samuel 15: 34—16: 13
Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul.
Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over
Saul. And the Lord was sorry that he had made Saul king over Israel. The Lord
said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from
being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse
the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”
Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.” And the Lord
said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’
Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall
anoint for me the one whom I name to you.” Samuel did what the Lord
commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him
trembling, and said, “Do you come peaceably?” He said, “Peaceably; I have
come to sacrifice to the Lord; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the
sacrifice.” And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is
now before the Lord.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his
appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the
Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the
Lord looks on the heart.” Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before
Samuel. He said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Then Jesse made
Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Jesse
made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord
has not chosen any of these.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?”
And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.” And
Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he
comes here.” He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful
eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; for this is the
one.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his
brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day
forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.

Third Lesson
Mark 4: 26-34
He also said, “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the
ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and
grow, he does not know how. The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the
head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes
in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.”
He also said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable
will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground,
is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and
becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds
of the air can make nests in its shade.”
With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it;
he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in
private to his disciples.
