Page 1 Lutheran Church At Work In Christ October & November 2009 SEEKING the Lost STRENGTHENING One Another SHARINGthe Gospel Vol. 15, No. 5 STUDYINGGod's Word Newsletter of Chapel of the Cross Lutheran Church, St Peters, Missouri A letter from your Pastors Dear Chapel Family, Happy New Year! No, we’re not confused about the time of the year. Last Sunday, September 13, we celebrated Rally Day at Chapel of the Cross. It is the time of the year (Sunday after Labor Day) that we kick off a new year of Christian education opportunities at Chapel. As we have done in the past, adults and children gathered in the gym under the annual Rally Day theme of “God Loves You More!” This Good News message was brought home loud and clear. A gigantic ice cream sundae (12 plus gallons) was built before the eyes of the children and adults. As more and more toppings were poured all over the mountain of ice cream the children were asked, “How much does God love you?” And, they screamed and screamed, “More and more!” Parents tell us that their children remember and talk about this Rally Day event and the Good News message for a long time. The same theme was presented during the children’s message in the worship services. The children were shown Math and Spelling text books and asked some questions about those subjects. The answers came quickly. “When asked, “How did you learn about adding and spelling?” The children responded with, “at school.” Then, the children were shown a Bible, and we talked about the importance of God’s Word – it tells us all about Jesus – his love and promises for us. When asked, “Where do you learn a b o u t Je s u s ? ” T h e y responded with, “church and Sunday school.” Right on! Yes, in worship, Bible study and Sunday school we hear the Good News about how much God loves us. Yes, the focus was on our youth, but that message is for all ages for all times. In the sermon, the congregation heard a paraphrase of John 3:16, “God loved you so much that he gave his one and only Son, Jesus to die on the cross and whoever believes in him will not perish, but have eternal life.” To that, when asked, “How much does God love you?” The congregation responded, “More!” Through the learning process at school and home, our children grow in their (Continued on page 2) IN THIS ISSUE: ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Rally Day Pictorial Directory Update Men’s Retreat—Oct 9-11 Sausage Supper-Nov 1st Chapel Taekwondo Page 2 (Continued from page 1) CONTENTS Letter from Pastor Scholle & Pastor Hoehner 1-2 Our Bible Studies 3 Music Ministry 4 Rally Day 5 Children’s Choir Director 6 Youth Calendar 7 Wacky Tackers Quilters 7 Wacker Tackers’ Ltr from District 8 Men’s Retreat 9 Chapel Scrip for Christmas 9 Pictorial Directory 10 Taekwondo 10 Congratulations Al Herbst 11 Pray for Missionary in Uganda 11 Keenagers News 11 Annual Sausage Supper 12 Christmas Outreach 2009 13 Mount Olive News 14 Business Directory 14 Chapel Circle News 15 LHS News 16&17 Peace Lutheran Info 17 Official Acts 18 Bulletin Folders & Ushers 19 October Birthdays/Anniversaries 20 November Birthdays/Anniversaries 21 Worship Assistants 22&23 Inserts: Calendars This is YOUR newsletter. You are invited and encouraged to submit articles for the December, 2009/January, 2010 issue BY knowledge and certainly need an academic foundation for their endeavors in l i f e. Although reinforced at home, it is through the church – worship and the study of God’s Word – we are strengthened in the faith as we grow in our love and knowledge of Jesus Christ. By the grace of God through faith in Christ Jesus, we receive forgiveness of sin in this life and the future is guaranteed today – eternal life with Him and our loved ones who have died in the faith. We will have many opportunities this year to learn more about God’s love and promises here at Chapel of the Cross (See the rest of the Chapel Light for details). We encourage you to be in worship and to be in the Word of God in Bible study and especially, for our youth, in Sunday school. Happy New ‘Sunday School’/‘Bible Study’ Year and remember, God loves you MORE! Pastor Hoehner and Pastor Scholle NOVEMBER 15, 2009 Please email the church office at [email protected] thank you Is Provided to The Congregation by Dorothy Gintz as a Gift to the Glory of God In Loving Memory of Gordon & Stephen Gintz Page 3 Our Bible Studies Come and join us on Sunday’s at 9:30am (between services) Christian Basics and Adult Confirmation with Pastor Scholle in the Coffee Shoppe Are you curious to know more about the Christian faith or know someone who is, or do you want to be confirmed in the Lutheran Christian faith? Come study the 6 basic teachings of God’s love, salvation, and purpose for your life. The book of Judges with Pastor Hoehner in the Gymnasium If you thought the book of Joshua reminded you of the movie Braveheart, then the book of Judges will challenge your conception of the Bible even more. You will not want to miss this study of how God uses cowards like Gideon and Superheroes like Samson to call His people to trust in Him alone among nations that worship wood and stone idols. Judges shows how the weakest of the weak who trust in God alone have the ultimate power and hope, while the strongest of the strong are nothing in the face of the creator of the Universe. See also how the book of Judges prepares God’s people for His Savior, Jesus Christ. The Gospel in Film with Seminarians Grayson Grenz and Ron Millard Come study how the Gospel has been communicated implicitly and explicitly in various movies. If you like watching movies, then this is your Bible class! Senior Youth Come and check us out Sunday School For 3 year olds and up—join us at 9:25am in the gym Moms and Babes Meets in the Lower Level Nursery with Anita Clausing Do you have a child that is not old enough to go to Sunday School? Bring your child(ren) to play with other toddlers while you study God’s Word and pray with other women. Even though classes have already begun, you are welcome to join us at any time. Page 4 Greetings From the Music Ministry Fall 2009 Dear Chapel members, Greetings to you, As we begin another music season, I reflect on the years past and realize I have had the privilege of opening a music season as the music coordinator for five years now. There have been changes in personnel and additions to our music program. We have grown in program and what a blessing to be able to share music with so many talented people here at Chapel. I am thankful for another musical year with you, as we “serve the Lord with gladness” here in this place. We have begun rehearsals and we are always hoping more people will join us in our efforts to serve our Lord and Savior through the gift of music in our worship. If you have an interest in serving Chapel of the Cross with your gift of music I encourage you to drop me an e-mail at [email protected] so we can discuss where you can fit in to the ministry. I hope you were able to “meet” our new choir accompanist and keyboardist, Jamie Desemone. We are grateful for her talents in this place and look forward to the next year with her serving with us. We continue in the season of Pentecost, and we move into a rich part of the church year when we celebrate our huge share of high festival days including Reformation, All Saints’ Sunday, and Christ the King Sunday which will usher us into the penitential season of Advent. We look forward to Celebration Sunday here on Christ the King Sunday or the Last Sunday of the Church Year. We will be celebrating with songs and hymns focusing on Christ as our King. We hope we can celebrate with our entire church family that day. Please plan on joining us. Blessings on your worship and your fall activities. Faith, Joy, Grace, & Hope! Page 6 Chapel’s Children’s Choir Director Hello, my name is Erin Hoehner, I am the director of the 2 children’s choirs at Chapel. I was born and raised in St. Charles, and attended and graduated from Zion Harvester and Lutheran High St. Charles. I went to Concordia University in River Forest, Illinois and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. My first call was to teach 1st grade in Quincy, Illinois where I also directed their children’s choir. After 2 years in Quincy, I was then called to teach 3rd grade at my alma mater, Zion Harvester, where I taught for 4 years before I left full time teaching to raise our family. Music has always been a part of my life, from taking or teaching piano lessons to playing in the church’s handbell choir, I enjoy playing and listening to music. I also enjoy my involvement in Little Lambs and Vacation Bible School here at Chapel. I look forward to beginning my second year as the children’s choir director at Chapel and encourage any interested youth to join us! (Cherub Choir is for children in Sunday School from 3 years- 2nd grade, and the Youth Choir is for those in 3rd Grade through High School.) Page 7 Attention all youth! Things are really starting to get going this month! On September 13th, we held our informational meeting for the 2010 National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. We had a wonderful turnout, but I know that there are still several of you who are considering attending. Please talk to me as soon as you can…we would LOVE to have you! <<<Just as a reminder, deposits are due ON OR BEFORE October 11.>>> On September 19th, the youth group went apple picking at Eckert’s Orchard in Belleville, IL. This was our first youth event of the new school year. Though we had a fairly small turnout, everyone had a great time picking apples, eating cheese fries, and listening to “cheesy” country music! Other upcoming events: ♦ October 16-17 – Jr. High confirmation retreat ♦ October 31 – Trick-or-treat for canned goods Be sure to bring your friends and meet at Chapel at 5pm in costume. We will have pizza and then spilt into groups for our trick or treating for canned goods. The canned goods will be donated to Oasis Food Pantry. We will be back at Chapel by 9pm to determine which group gathered the most cans. ♦ November – Servant event (either Oasis Food Pantry or St. Patrick’s Center) ♦ December 12th – Christmas party, “white elephant gift exchange,” and caroling May God bless you as you begin your new school year! In Christ, Vicar Mark Squire Wacker Tacker Quilters Wacky Tackers are continuing to make baby quilts that will be sent to Concordia Seminary in St Louis for families with babies. Rioting had broken out in Kampala and Kayunga. GI By Friday, downtown Kampala was a ghost town—only smoldering tires, broken glass, and policemen roaming the streets. KE By Saturday things were quiet and by Monday the downtown merchants were picking up the pieces. The final toll at press time: 21 dead, hundreds injured, and hundreds arrested. Westerners were never targeted in the demonstrations, still we prudently kept our distance from the areas of conflict. Thank the Lord for keeping us safe and pray for the underlying conflicts that have yet to be addressed.” KEENAGER NEWS ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Sat, Oct 3rd at 7 PM “Broadway Bound” a play at the Community College. Page 13 CHRISTMAS OUTREACH 2009 Dear Chapel Family—so that you can plan ahead, we wanted to share with you that you will have the following opportunities to share the love of Christ for the 2009 Christmas season. MITTEN TREE Help children from Mount Olive Lutheran Church and of the Shaw neighborhood by decorating our tree which will be placed in the narthex, with mittens, gloves, hats and scarves. GIVING TREE Help families who are in need by taking an ornament and purchasing a gift card. Some of these families the Pastors personally will have been working with but we are also asking for you to share with us if you know of any families that are in need. BEYOND THE GIVING TREE Anyone who would like to Adopt a Family for Christmas, please see Pastor Hoehner or Pastor Scholle. Thank you. Page 14 September 2009 A brief update from Mt Olive Food Pantry: The number of people coming for help has been increasing while food is getting difficult to come by. This reflects the current economic situation. We are serving between 400 and 500 people per month. God has kept His promise to supply our needs, which are not always the same as our wants. As our shelves get empty he sends help from somewhere, in His time, not ours. Friends and fellow churches contribute when they can and young people have come after school to help get food and restock shelves during non-food pantry hours. Please pray for this ministry; and as you have opportunity, your donations are always welcome. Food Coop: We have recently changed the source from which we get our food. It was Come Share, now it is Caring Hearts. In the month of September we had 50+ orders. Let me be the first to thank you for your participation with us in this outreach program. Faith-Based Initiatives: Two faith-based initiative programs are taking shape: 1.An After School Program with Mullanphy School, focusing on Math and Reading will hopefully get underway in October. I have been meeting with teachers, staff and students at the school several times a week in September developing relationships, but what you really need to hear is the spiritual results. Six baptisms are planned in the next few weeks. Praise to the Lord that His Kingdom is growing. 2.Immigrant Assistance Program. This is a new program that seems to be taking shape rapidly. We will hopefully get a group started in our building in October. This is run by the Center for Survivors of Torture and War Trauma. May God bless you for your on-going support. Please remember us in your prayers as we remember you. Peace in the Lord, Pastor Lampe for Mt Olive Lutheran Church CHAPEL BUSINESS DIRECTORY Do you own your own business? Would you like to advertise your business or the one you work for to Chapel members? We are collecting information to include in a Chapel Business Directory. We have forms available for you to fill out on the counter in the Coffee Shoppe. Please leave the completed form in the adjacent basket. Feel free to leave a business card with the information, if you have one. There is no charge for being in the directory. We will collect information through Novmber and hopefully have the directory done by the beginning of 2010. Thank you. Page 16 Celebrating 28 Years of Ministry Trust in the Lord Proverbs 3:53:5-6 “Trust in the Lord” is our theme for the 2009-10 school year. We can obviously trust God because he is all powerful, all knowing, and always present to help us. More importantly, He has kept every promise He ever made! That instills trust. As humans we find that we build trust with people by getting to know them better. The more time we spend getting to know them the more we can learn to trust them. The same is true in getting to know God. The more we study God’s Word and learn about Him the more we can learn to trust Him. The great joy of working at Lutheran High is that we get the opportunity to increase that spiritual knowledge every day and build young people who are equipped to “trust in the Lord” today and for the rest of their life. The 77 new freshmen and 14 transfers have adapted to classes at Lutheran High and are off to a great start along with the rest of the student body. Very helpful in that process are the LHS Ambassadors who are: Corey Bichel, Jenae Bretsch, Rachel Krauss, Ally Liefer, Josh McKay, Alyssa Neese, Charyssa Neese, Brea Roth, Jake Sostak, Rachel Wall, Catherine Willbrand, Heidi Willenbrink, Megan Chrismer, Taylor Demien, Madeline Galucia, Brook Hunt, Caitlin Lauer, Mallori Owens, Abbi Sonderegger, Ashlyn Sappington, Madeline Stroder, Steven Macke, Meagan Leppien, Marissa Malta, Lauren McDermott, Paige Poggemeier, Jamie Skerston, Zach Sostak, and Ali Von Deylen. A new club at Lutheran High this year is the Key Club. This service group is sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club and encourages students to get involved by helping others in their community. In August they helped to deliver backpacks with school supplies t o childr en and a m eal t o underprivileged families in the St. Louis area. Congratulations to our students, parents, and feeder schools for posting the highest composite ACT averages in St. Charles County again for 2009. Our composite average of 25.7 was 1.7 higher than the next closest school and significantly above the state average of 21.6 and the national average of 21.1. All 8th grade students and any interested parents are invited to a morning program hosted by the staff and students to share information about the program at Lutheran High. If you know of families who could benefit from the strong spiritual and academic program at Lutheran High, encourage them to attend. Are you a member of the Grand Century Club at Lutheran High? This is an annual giving club that continues to be a great blessing in providing funds so that we can assist families who struggle to pay the full tuition at Lutheran High. Gifts range from $100 to several thousand dollars. Your gift is eligible for matching funds through Thrivent and/or your employer. Make a donation and help to equip a student with God’s Spirit and knowledge. Once again we thank all of you for your prayers and support that allow the ministry at Lutheran High to have such a positive impact on our young people on a daily basis. Because of you we are able to build that relationship with Christ that will help them to “Trust in the Lord”. In God’s Service, David A.
