INTERNATIONAL BETTA CONGRESS
Contact information for all IBC Board Members and Committee Chairs is provided here. Email addresses are provided as well; however,
please remember that not everybody checks their email every day, and that in an electronic format sometimes messages go astray. Same
with physical mail. If in doubt that your message or letter has reached somebody, please call or try to contact another Board Member. The
IBC believes that all members are important and so is what you have to say.
Code of ethics of The International Betta Congress
IBC members welcome everyone who is interested in Bettas, whether new at owning and/or raising Bettas or an old pro who has raised thousands.
The IBC feels there is room for all Betta enthusiasts, young or old, new or experienced, individuals, families, team or commercial breeder.
The IBC is a club of individuals, families, teams, and commercial breeders who support the keeping, breeding, and or the showing of Bettas bred by
members, the research into the genetics of the Betta and support of the preservation of the wild species through the Species Maintenance Program.
The IBC believes that members who sell, trade or give Bettas to others must represent the description of the Bettas in a proper manner to assure that
the recipient is not misled. Misrepresentation would be a violation of the IBC ethics.
The IBC believes that when Bettas are entered in a show, they are Bettas that were bred and raised by the entrant unless clearly stated otherwise by the
entrant. Failure to abide by this would be a violation of the IBC ethics.
The IBC does not participate in the fighting of fish.
The International Betta Congress expects all IBC members to act in a responsible and fair manner in all business dealings regarding the purchase and
sale of their Betta stock and supplies. The organization is, however, not an enforcement agency for such practices and therefore will not become
involved in situations regarding individual breeders.
The IBC believes that if all members abide by these simple guidelines we will have a happy, fun and stimulating club.

President’s Message
We’ve had a lot going on since
convention and a lot of it was on the
BetterBettas Mail List, which is now an
official communications medium, as is
FLARE! and the IBC Website. We
have uploaded all of the IBC Handbook
except a few chapters of the
Standards, which have not been
revised at this time. Revisions of
chapters are very time consuming and I personally appreciate
all of the hard work the J Board is devoting to this task, and to
Sally Van Camp for her tireless work retyping.
For those of you who do not subscribe to the BetterBettas Mail
List, I urge you to apply for membership. FLARE! is published
6 times a year. The BetterBettas is ongoing, 24/7. Right now
we have about 370 +/- members. Many of them are family
memberships and in my opinion that represents 600 plus, of
our approximately 700 members.
All of the official documents of the IBC are there in the files
section. There is a misconception that if you are a member of
the list it will fill you mail box with messages. That is not true.
You have a choice of receiving all messages into your mailbox
or just accessing them on the Web. Either way, you can keep
up with the news of the IBC online painlessly. Also, there are
polls for voting on your favorite issue so you can see the
feelings of other members and express yours.
I would like to devote the rest of my message to someone who
I consider to be a valued contributor to the IBC in more than
one way. His show record follows:
1995-1996-9th, 1996-1997-9th, 1997-1998-4th, 1998-1999-6th,
1999-2000-2nd, 2000-2001-3rd, 2001-2002-3rd, 2002-2003-8th,
2003-2004-1st.
Nine years in a row placing in the
top ten in the IBC, two of which he
was Grand Champion and Reserve
Grand Champion! Quite a record!! I
don’t think it has ever been equaled,
nor do I think it ever will. I am
speaking of Sieg Illig, a long time
Judy & Sieg Illig
breeder, grand champion, member of the top ten breeders for
nine years, member of the Judging Board and someone the
IBC should be very proud of. I know I am proud to call him my
friend.
Those of you who have had the opportunity to speak with Sieg
at shows and conventions know how open and helpful he is
and will cheerfully answer any questions and give suggestions.
Thanks Sieg! You are an asset to the IBC!

Editor’s Message
Hello Everyone!!
I just want take a few words to introduce myself to those of you
who don’t know me. I’m Linda Scott, the new FLARE! Editor.
Some of you may be thinking that I have the same last name
as the President. Your right! I’m the North wing and he’s the
South Wing!! Taking over FLARE! from Judy has been a great
challenge and I hope to continue with Judy’s success!!
I want to thank everyone who has sent both timely and
interesting information and pictures. I’d like to mention here
that the pictures are beautiful!! Unfortunately, black & white in
this issue does not do them justice. Be sure to check out
FLARE! in BetterBettas to get the full impact of the color!!
I’d also like to welcome some new members to the Editorial
Staff. Sue McMillan and Kelli Crane have signed on and
J.R. Baker, Victorea Earnest and Dave Polunas are continuing.
Thanks to all of you!!
A few members have asked about information in past issues of
FLARE!, I’ve checked with Sally Van Camp, she has an index
and we will be working to put the index on BetterBettas.
Starting with this issue, I will be including a “Gene Lucas
Series”. The rest of Volume 39 will cover the five parts of
“GENETICS OF BETTAS’. Remember, you can always order
the whole TA Library from Melissa Migota. (See p22)
I’ve met many new people form all over the world these last
two months and I hope to meet even more!! Keep those
articles and pictures coming!!

Judging Board News
Greetings,
We now welcome Claire Pavia and Peter Choo to the Judging
Board as non-voting members from Area 2 and Area 6,
respectively. They have been invited to represent their
respective areas as channels of communication for issues
involving IBC standards, judging issues and assisting in our
efforts to review remaining standards with a fresh perspective.
Claire is from Switzerland and we have been fortunate to get to
know her at our IBC conventions. Peter is from Singapore,
enjoys the discus hobby as well as bettas and I have had the
pleasure of judging bettas with him at the AQUARAMA in May.
Area 2 and Area 6 members, please feel free to communicate
your ideas and issues related to IBC shows, standards and
judging to Claire and Peter.
chapters 8 through 10 for us to edit as needed. This has
saved the JB a lot of time and the IBC a lot of money, as those
chapters only existed in hardcopy. Many Thanks to Sally!
I hope that everyone that has fish that are "showable" supports
the clubs at our three Fall International shows. They should
also be a great place to purchase fish at auction. So, if
you live anywhere near Indianapolis (10/1), Dallas/Ft Worth
(10/15) or Jacksonville, FL (10/29) areas, be sure to attend and
enjoy the fish and the company of your fellow hobbyists.
Best Regards To All,
Ernie Perez - JB Chair

The IBC Web Site and the BetterBetta List are now official!!
We felt we needed to revise Article VIII, Official Publications of
the Congress. FLARE! is of course now the official publication,
and the Web Site was made official back in San Antonio but
never put in the bylaws. The BetterBetta List needed to
become official also. We have been running it since 1999 and
it is an integral part of the IBC in today's "instant"
communication age. Also now that all member only documents
are now uploaded to the BetterBetta List it needed to be
included.
It is also sometimes very inconvenient that changes that need
to be announced to members are delayed 30 to 60 days
waiting for FLARE! to be published. Now a change can be
announced and official on the BetterBetta list immediately. Of
course all new rules and/or changes to the Constitution/Bylaws
and Standards will also continue to be printed in FLARE!
The Constitution committee drew up and discussed the
revision and voted unanimously to make the revision and pass
it to the E board for approval. The E board discussed it and
voted unanimously today, to revise Article VIII as it appears
below:
"Article VIII Official Communications of The Congress
Section 1
FLARE! shall be the name of the official bimonthly publication
available in both printed and/or electronic format to all
members of The Congress.
The IBC Web Site and the BetterBettas Internet List shall also
be official means of communication for the congress. The
current electronic version of FLARE! and The IBC Handbook
shall be in the Files section for members use. The IBC Web
Site is open to the public and the BetterBettas Internet List is
for members only. Additions, revision and/or changes to the
IBC Handbook shall become effective the date published in
any of these three publications.
Section 2
The format and content of the FLARE! shall be the
responsibility of the Editor.
Section 3
The minutes, annual and interim reports of all meetings of the
congress shall be published in the FLARE! within sixty
(60)days of receipt by the Editor.
Section 4
Current and /or past issues of the FLARE! may be requested
by any IBC member."

Chapter Chatter from Betta Australis
We established our Australian Chapter in January 2005
with a handful of enthusiastic people and lots of goodwill.
Since then we’ve built up a good membership base that
exceeded 50 members in August.
Our Club staged the first Australian international betta
specialty show in April. The Club held a face-to-face
meeting in conjunction with the show, and social activities
for members included a visit to one of the Club’s
sponsors, the aquarium fish importers BayFish.
Todd Knight and Jodi-Lea Matheson, two of the founding
members of Betta Australis, became the first Australians
to qualify as IBC Area 6 judges at the BCS-IBC judges’
training course held in conjunction with Aquarama. A
blue CT female bred and owned by Todd Knight placed
nd
2 at Aquarama, testament to the quality of fish Australia
is producing.
The Club held its second betta specialty show in June.
Entry was restricted to local and interstate entries only.
The Club’s President, Robin Bedding, hosted a social
gathering of members and friends at his home in
Canberra on 23 July. Jodi-Lea Matheson left warm
Brisbane to travel to chilly Canberra especially for the
meeting. Jodi treated everyone to a viewing of the IBC
tape of Dr Gene Lucas discussing colour genetics,
evolution of tail shapes, etc. Later that day, Jodi talked
about finnage and showed slides to illustrate good and
bad points. It was an extremely informative talk presented
by arguably the most knowledgeable betta person in
Australia.
Our last major show for the year was held in August at
the Royal Brisbane Show. Entries were received from
Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and of course –
Australia!
A Betta Social day was organised by Club members on 4
September.
Club sponsor BayFish again allowed
members and friends to tour their facility, and then it was
on to Bob and Linda’s place to view their eclectic
collection of finned critters. Finally, Graeme hosted a
BBQ, discussion, presentation and raffle to raise funds for
our Club.
To help promote bettas to the general public, the Club
held a small display of bettas at the Queensland
Aquarium and Terrarium Society’s general aquarium
show on 16-18 September.
We would like to thank our wonderful members for their
support and assistance, especially at show time (water
changes for 200+ tanks can be a daunting task!). We’ve
discovered some hidden talents, including the ability to
write informative articles for our Magazine.

Chapter Chatter Texas Betta Society
We have survived a District Show and an International Show
and are preparing for our next International Show. The Wild
Pair class was the highlight of our show. We were able to
create interest in wild bettas in Asia and now all the clubs have
their own SMP’s. Gerald, the head of our SMP helped with the
show and showed us how to exhibit the fish. We will have the
wild pair class again as a non-conforming class. There is no
place to show a wild caught betta at the present time. We will
also have a non-conforming class for pairs so if you want the
class reinstated show your vote by entering some. We will
also have the breeders choice award. We are working hard
down here in Texas trying share our love for bettas with others.
5
Well on the surface it might not appear that we are doing much
but sometimes looks can be deceiving. On the surface the
splendens complex manual is getting closer to completion and
should be ready by months end. It will be reviewed and after it
passes reviewing will be placed up on the Betta Bettas Yahoo
Group as a file for Download. After it is completed I will begin
work on the picta complex manual which might make a good
article for Flare.
With that aside our South American SMP will soon receive
their first SMP stock distribution for dispersal to its members.
The South American SMP is becoming quite active and I hope
by years end the SMP site will be mirrored in Spanish. I am
not a web designer but I can fake it with Andrea’s help.
I should take some time and notice Wally Nida’s group down in
Texas. They did an excellent job bringing in wild betas for the
SMP stock banks and it is really nice to work with wild caught
fish with local information. Because our collectors do not want
their locations known we will use location codes attached to
the stocks.
Right now we have a few wild species in the SMP Betta Pals
program so if you are interested in breeding wild bettas, join us
and try going wild.
Looking for something to do at your Betta Meetings? If you
can do powerpoints at your Meetings why not show the SMP
Slideshow? Originally I would have liked one person from
each club to join the SMP but that has not really happened so I
open up the slideshow to anyone in a Betta Club that wants to
show it. The South American group will translate it into
Spanish and as our German Group picks up I hope it will be
translated into German as well.
Well that is it for now; I hope to have a lot more news for
everyone next time.
Thanks, Gerald
While this is the third year the IBC has offered a science fair
prize, this is the first year in which I have the pleasure of
reporting on a winner. Heather Gordon, Jennifer Willett and
Jean-Marie Moore of Chantilly High School in Chantilly,
Virginia were mentored by Dr. Andrea D. Cobb, the Science
department chair, in a project called Bite or Flight: Leaning
versus Instinct. For their project they trained Betta to come to
the surface of their tanks when exposed to a shape of a human
hand.
This is easily accomplished by following the
presentation of the hand with food; soon the fish will respond to
the hand alone. They then assessed the extent to which the
fish generalize by measuring how often the fish responded
when the hand was changed in some respect, notably in the
shape (number of fingers) and color. The fish seemed quite
sensitive to shape, but insensitive to differences in color, with
one notable exception.
Orange hands induced a flight
response, a finding the authors interpret as reflecting the fact
that some natural predators bear orange coloration. Jennifer
and Jean-Marie had previously placed in a VA state regional
science fair and their project chosen from amongst several
entries by the Research and Grants Committee (Gene Lucas,
Rosalyn Upson, Brian Ahmer and Leo Buss). The three
students have received a plaque from the IBC and $75 US
Savings Bond. Students can find rules governing the annual
competition at on the research & grants page of the IBC
website.

In Memory of Roberto De Santos
In the words of Angel Ampil………Dear friends from the International Betta Community:
It is with a very sad heart that I inform you of the unexpected demise of a very dear friend, Roberto de Santos. He
suffered a heart attack early Friday, September 16, 2005 morning. He died peacefully in his sleep while resting in
his home.
Roberto was an inspiration to us all here in the Philippines. He was our leader, consultant, idol and friend. The
Betta Club Philippines is still at its infancy and we shall definitely miss Roberto's guidance and leadership. Roberto
is a big loss to betta keeping here in the Philippines. I am sure that he shall be missed by all.
To the family he leaves behind our deepest condolences.

Tri-State Bettas - September 10-11 District III show report
The "best of" awards
Tri-State is a club with
a very large "inactive"
base and a small
(okay,
make
that
miniscule)
active
base. When the idea
of a show came up, it
did not make sense for
us to try to do it all
ourselves - it was
beyond our resources.
Yet the interest was
there, so what to do?
I approached the Lorain County Aquarium Society, which does
a very nice annual all species show, and pitched the idea of
combining a "betta specialty" with their show. Their site is the
lovely Lorain County Community College "Center Mall" and
they have a lot of experience in setting up fish shows! They
liked the idea, and the District III betta show was on!
We had all the usual problems - and maybe some unusual
ones. Most of my active members are out of state, as the
chapter covers 3 states (Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio). One
member couldn't return for the show. One left the state and
club. A couple more just dropped out of sight. I came to
depend more and more on the LCAS folks for help (and moral
support). We pushed on, with help from people on the IBC
Better Bettas list (David Spector - thanks for all the silly
questions answered!), and slowly but surely the work got done.
I originally hoped for, and planned for around 300 entries, but
realistically I expected 200. Then Katrina hit, and too many
people were trying to survive to support a show in Ohio. Bless
the few who did send fish - I saw some awesome ones!.
Judge Carolyn Hanlon - aside from her jokes about having
forgotten her waterproof pocket - was a great judge and a
great teacher. I learned a lot in the short time it took her to
judge our 87 entries. The saddest thing was that some of the
fish Carolyn and I both would have bid to the roof on, were not
for sale. But they were great to see, and it was a fun
experience.
Of course, the post office received the fish to be returned,
along with ribbons and certificates, at 12:30 on Monday
afternoon. All were sent overnight. Not ONE of them made it
overnight! I've since heard from 2 of the 3 recipients that their
fish returned safely, and that's great. My biggest fear was in
bagging the fish for shipment and having them die on the way
home.
We had 5 open classes for non-IBC members, and that
brought out a few local people. Lorain County Aquarium
Society member TJ Patterson won Best in Open with his
showy red plakat. Coleen Timmons - a very patient lady
whose name I always seem to spell wrong - took Best of Show
Male with her T4 class winner. Best of Show Female went to
Ernie Perez for his E7 class entry. Reserve BOS
Male went to Rob Panerio for his B3 entry, and Coleen
Timmons took RBOS Female with a B7 entry.
This show would have been a disaster for everyone, without
the help of some people who - my fin-folk angels - showed up
and worked like little beavers: Judy Bokar, president of the
independent Western Reserve Betta Club, and her friend Linda
Curran. They didn't enter fish, but they helped set up the
stands, beanies, bowls and bench the fish. They had help from Coleen Timmons, Karen Grimmett, and even Ray
"Kingfish" Lucas came over to supervise and kibitz for a bit.
Ken McGill of LCAS tweaked the Excel program for me, so I
could make much of the detail work automatic. Donna
Massey, president of LCAS, drove me to the Bokar's residence
to pick up the bowls. Brenda Barr, treasurer of LCAS, handled
the auction money/registration issue along with LCAS and
printed me a tally and a check at the end of the auction saving me untold headaches in figuring out who got what.
The auction was 37 fish - many of them prize winners. The
total take was $437. Several fish with minimum $3 bids went
for $30! Only one fish went unsold. And I know someone
offered Coleen at least $100 for her BOS fish - which she
politely turned down. Carolyn and I commiserated over the
fact that several of the really "cute" females were not for sale,
but I got a few fish at auction, and so did she, and I think it
turned out well for everyone. I even found another local as
interested in greens as I am - and she managed to buy 2 of
them at the auction.
Oh - about the treasury. We started out with less than enough
for the awards, and the spreadsheet is a study in deficit
spending. We got not a single sponsorship - partly due to lack
of manpower, I suppose. At the end - when all was said and
done - we paid off the bills and were $16 to the good, and that
made me very happy indeed.
If you want my opinion on all this, it's very simple. Thinking
about a show, or talking about one, is not the same as doing it.
Nothing prepares you for something like this - you just do it
with the help of those who are willing - in and out of your core
group. I found it a positive and rewarding experience. More
than that, I met more friends and folks who love bettas, and
more avenues to expand myself in the hobby - at the cost of a
few hours, and maybe just a couple of grey hairs. Not a bad
exchange. So if you're a small club, don't let that stop you.
Just be realistic, and know what you can handle. If a local
show is the "best" you can do for now - make it the best
certified show you can. You have to start somewhere. And it
all turns out to be worth it in the end.

GENETICS OF BETTAS – AN INTRODUCTION (part 1 of 5)
By DR. GENE A. LUCAS, GIAA
Our “editorial board, genetics committee, and general fanatics”
requested that I write a series of articles concerning the
inheritance of Bettas in some hopefully understandable way.
The idea was that we might be able to provide some
information which is always needed by beginners so they might
be able to predict results of their matings or possibly make use
of genetic variations to produce new types.
This is a tall order. There is much that needs to be
understood, at a basic level at least. I am going to do the best
I can to try to present things so they will be useable. In this
discussion I merely want to discuss the various topics to be
considered so that the various problems may be pinpointed.
As time goes on, these problems then, can be solved one by
one. If points are not clear, it will be possible to determine just
what is not clear so that it may be reviewed before proceeding.
I believe I can work well with my newsletter which will also be
appearing regularly. When things are puzzling requests for
clarification can be sent to me and I can continue the regular
series and at the same time provide clarification of previous
topics via the newsletter.

GENETICS OF BETTAS – AN INTRODUCTION (part 1 of 5) continued…
By DR. GENE A. LUCAS, GIAA
I request your interest and inquiries, therefore. They should
be sent to:
DR. GENE A LUCAS
DEPT OF BIOLOGY
DRAKE UNIVERSITY
DES MOINES, IOWA 50311
I believe that the necessary fundamental requirements
include the following: 1. A sound understanding of the
basics of reproduction.
2. The special aspects of
reproduction of Bettas.
3. The relationship between
reproduction and heredity. 4. What is inherited and how.
5. How to recognize differences. 6. How to interpret them
and to make use of them. 7. A good knowledge of what has
already been determined about Bettas. 8. An
understanding of how this knowledge may be put to use. 9.
How to determine what to do when setting up a type or
color cross. 10. What information is needed. (breeding
records, etc.) 11. What the chances are of obtaining
desired results.
These are broad topics as I thought of them. Some of
them can be handled easily and quickly. Others may
require more extensive consideration. The knowledge of
what has been discovered about Betta genetics will be of
great value to you, though without some of the basic
information you may not be able to put it to use. If you are
interested in the series, try to understand everything and in
the end I am sure you will be happy that you did.
A couple examples of the kinds of things I have in mind
may help whet your appetite for this. You are all familiar
with the belief that melanistic (black) Bettas have sterile
females. We would hope that the problem might be
overcome so that melanos (the appropriate descriptive
name) could become generally available. Once they
become generally available and many people work them, I
would expect to see considerable improvement in them.
Now, actually there are not many “black” females around.
Of these that are around, none really knows how many
have been mated to see if they would spawn. It could be
that the number is very low. It could also be that just
entirely by coincidence spawns of eggs from these females
did not develop. The conclusion that they are sterile may
be incorrect. If we could say, for example, that 126
matings were made involving this kind of female, 76 of
them spawned and none produced eggs that hatched, we
would feel more comfortable about concluding that they are
sterile.
Also, I have an old letter from Cheri Melchior (1810
Franklin, Irving, Texas, 75060) last address…my last
newsletter came back…anyone know where she is???
She asks about females getting long fins and turning into
males and females blowing eggs into nests and so on. I’m
sure some of you are familiar with some of the things I
would say but perhaps it is new to others. My experiments
indicate to me that there is a genetic basis to long fin
growth. Eberhardt (1943) made the only previous report
regarding the inheritance of long finnage in Bettas and
concluded that the development of long fins was due to a
dominant gene which lacked the limiting power of the
normal. My matings confirm this. Females develop the
longer finnage but to a lesser degree. In younger females
there may be no detectable difference between wild type
and domesticated, genetically long-finned types. Since the
fins of the male grow more rapidly and to a greater extent,
the difference is obvious at an early stage.
One factor then, is the genetic type as far as finnage goes.
Another factor is the sex determining system of the Betta. I
have found that through reading of past experiences and
comparing these with my own results, I have come to the
tentative conclusion that Bettas may be at an evolutionary
stage where they have no real permanently established
sex.
During development they go through what is
essentially an immature female-like stage like many other
fish but that the development to definite male or female at
“maturity” may be subject to modification by a variety of
outside influences.
In 1930 H. Schmidt, using a male which was supposed to
have been obtained by reversal, obtained approximately
normal sex ratios. This casts doubt upon the idea of
chromosomal sex determination. Nobel and Kumpf (1937)
reported an individual with testicular tissue developing from
the stump of an ovary that had been removed from a
female.
Experimentally, E. Schmidt (1962) produced
sexually reversed individuals from ovariectomized females,
some of which mated like normal males. Some produced
progeny but the sex ratios would be questioned.
The point is, it may be possible for females to come to be
like males and if so they could develop long fins due
possibly to hormonal changes. The sex difference is one
thing. The genetic difference between normal stocks which
genetically never get long fins and types which can develop
long fins is another. The inheritance of “long fins” in fish is
practically not understood at all. Perhaps there is some
sort of normal regulation of length which goes “haywire”.
Possibly there is over stimulation of fin growth. It is difficult
to conceive of a continuous growth situation like we have in
human hair or nails. What appears probable is that a
mutation occurred at some time, which regardless of how,
allows continuous fin growth. Since the long finned types
have been known since the first fancy Bettas were brought
to this country, no one knows when the mutation occurred
or where. It is possible to have strains with long fins or
short fins and each type is variable with the short variety
much more limited. I find that (with data collected so far) it
is possible to segregate both types from crosses so there is
no reduction in potential of the proper genetic types from
having been crossed to “short” strains.
I would be
interested in hearing of other experiences with this. More
next
time.

The Betta Perspective by Dave Polunas
Interview with Jim Williams
Welcome to the Betta Perspective, a column that features interviews with IBC members and serves as a
forum to learn more about our members, breeding techniques, fishroom set-ups and other topics of interest.
Dave: How did you get started with bettas as a hobby?
Jim: At age 17 I started working at a pet shop and bred them
at that time. But in about 1988 or 1989; whenever the IBC
had their Convention at Columbus, Ohio, I was with the
Buckeye Betta Club and with assistance from Steve
Glassburn, I started raising better quality bettas and started to
build an interest in showing in IBC shows.
Dave: What percentage of HM finnage type Bettas do you get
in your spawns? Is it color dependent?
Jim: Very few and sometimes none from one spawn. Also
they may show HM while 3 months old but then it becomes a
super delta. Sometimes they are super delta – show HM for a
week or so – and then revert back to super delta.
I have
separate lines for color and finnage.
Dave: What color strains are you working with? Which is your
favorite?
Jim: I currently work with reds and yellows. Reds have been
and still are my favorite. I may dabble with marbles or steel
blues on occasion for a change of pace.
Dave: What size spawning tank do you use and how do you
set it up? Do you condition your breeders?
Jim: I always use 10 gallon with about 5 ½ inches water,
cover, 80 degrees and hiding places for female. Use ½ cut
styro cup with Java Fern. Use black water extract or the new
water treatment obtainable from IBC. I condition breeders on
live black worms, the new pellets from IBC, frozen brine and
frozen Hikari blood worms (when not in hurricane season).
Dave: What bowl size do you raise your males in and at what
age do you jar males?
Jim: I start with wide mouth quart and the best show males go
into plastic 2-quart size containers. I jar males as soon as they
color up well, show aggressiveness or start to square off.
Reds grow much faster than yellows.
Dave: What is your water change frequency for Betta growout tanks and Betta bowls?
Jim: First month – I usually just add water and take out bulk of
debris at bottom of tank with a turkey baster. Starting at about
a month old I start changing some (about 20%) water every 2nd
day. About 2 months old and up – probably about 1/3 to ½
every 4 to 5 days.
Betta jars get a complete water change
every 4 days, unless the need is sooner.
Dave: How do you treat your water you use for water
changes? What is the pH and hardness of your water from the
tap?
Jim: I mix 50/50 Nova aqua and Amquel and treat as directed.
Water from my tap is about 7.2-7.4 ph and hardness unknown
but it is not hard but fairly soft. If I use just old cheap old
generic antichlorine – I must use a buffer such as Proper ph
7.0 in jar water; otherwise water will jump from 7.4 to 6.4 or
lower in one day.
Dave: What temperature water do you raise your bettas in?
Jim: 80 degrees for the reds. 82-83 degrees for the yellow
infants.
Dave: How do you work your Betta lines? Inbreeding?
Outcrossing?
Jim: Three red lines, two yellow lines. Inbreeding 2 or 3
generations and then outcross for 1 depending on needs of the
individual lines.
Dave: What characteristics do you look for in your breeders?
Branching?
Jim: Solid color, straight edge caudal fin with most HM
characteristics, extra rays within caudal fin, nice dorsal and
aggressiveness.
Dave: What foods do you use for newborn fry? Juveniles?
Adults?
Jim: I use liquid fry, spirulina powder. Micro worms about a
week old. New hatched Baby brine for all every day. I also
feed Hikari FD bloodworms along with foods above.
Dave: What type of feeding schedule do you use?
Jim: I feed fry and juveniles twice daily – morning and
evening.
Adults get fed once daily unless conditioning for
breeding or show. If work interferes then all fish only get once
in evening.
Dave: At what age do you cull your Bettas spawns?
Jim: I start at about 6 weeks and onward. Or unless the
spawn is too big for the 10 gallon tank – I then split to other
tanks or cull. Too many in a fry tank seems to stunt the growth
and seems to bring on velvet.
Dave: What types of filtration are used in your fry or grow out
tanks? Why?
Jim: I always use the old standard wool, charcoal, and
ammonia box filters for all tanks including the breeding tanks.
I let air flow at a gradual pace. I do use sponge filters also for
large grow out tanks to supplement the box filter. Box filters
do a better job of particle cleanup and a better job of cutting
down on ammonia build-up.
Dave: What are your breeding goals for the future?
Jim: I will maintain reds and yellows but may cut back on the
volume or maybe cut out the yellows completely in future.
Dave: We all thank you Jim for the valuable information you
shared. I know you have been quite busy in the last two years
especially just weathering Hurricanes and their aftermath.
Power outages, flooding, and cleanups have made betta
keeping more difficult.

Introducing ……. Chi Wai Wung
Hello, My name is Chi Wai Wung and I am from Taiwan. I am 31 years old and I have lived in New York since 1985. I'm a new
member who has been breeding betta for two or three years. I want to share some of my ideas for other breeders. Two or three
years ago I did not know very much about bettas. I had to learn and search on web, and read books every day and night.
Thanks for those people and IBC members who post their valuable information on their own web pages include IBC.
Thank you very much

Introducing…... Hochul Jung
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Hochul Jung and I live in the Chungup city of South Korea. I work for a
construction company and I'm a personnel manager.
I've always kept tropical aquariums since I was seven years old. I started 50-gallon tropical aquariums that my mother bought
me for my birthday. By the time I was ten I had five large tanks and had spawned a lot of livebearers and some cichlids. When I
was in high school, I started raising discus and I most specialized in them. After years of breeding discus I was looking for
something different to breed and one day I saw an article of quality bettas in the aquarium magazine(FAMA). I got interested in
bettas and was looking for quality stocks but in those days it was impossible. There was only veil tail bettas. However, I bought
a couple of bettas and I fell in love with them and I was satisfied. But in the summer of 2001, my Japanese friend sent to me
some beautiful bettas and I was hooked again.
I'm currently working with purples, melanos, reds, red marbles and rose-tails. I'm a lot of working with purples and it's so hard
work but I know that good result can only be accomplished by hard work. I'm trying to develop the solid purple line.

Packing Your Fish For Shipping – Rob Panerio
IBC Standards States:
Bagging and Boxing Fish:
Use about a third of a cup of water –
more is okay if there is room for a lot of
air in the bag. Remember that extra
water
does
mean
additional
postage. Bag the fish so the bag
stays inflated and tie off the bag itself,
sealing the bag itself, sealing the bag
as tightly as possible. Rubber bands
are strongly advised against because
they usually allow leakage. A general
rule of thumb is that the bag when tied
off should be 1/3 water and 2/3 air.
Put a label on the bag identifying the
fish – use of a Waterproof Marker is
strongly recommended. Then place
another bag on the outside of this one
with the opening on the opposite end
from the interior bag. Tie the outer
bag off also and label it too. This is
called “double bagging” and is the
preferred method for shipping fish.
Single bagging many times leads to
leaking which can blur labels and kill
fish. Fish need two types of insulation:
one to insulate from temperature and
one to insulate from shock. Styrofoam
serves both purposes nicely. Make
sure the bags cannot be punctured.
Before sealing the box, include the
entry form, entry fees, return postage,
and bags if the fish are to be returned.
DOUBLE CHECK!!! Be sure to also
include bags to be used for the return
trip. Seal the box well and mark it
“Live Tropical Fish” or “perishable”
depending upon shipping methods. It
is wise to check postal regulations if
shipping to another IBC Judging Area.
One Sharpe Pen
These are all the items you will need
One Pair of scissors
One Fish
Two plastic bags
Step 1
One small water bottle mouth
I am now going to do a picture
presentation of how I do this.
Fill small container with water from
your fishes living quarters.
One Small Container
19
Step 2
This is how it should look if you
performed the steps properly so far. If
fish is on floor flopping around start
from step 1 and start all over.
Align scissors on the excess bag side
about .5 inches from the knot.
Step 9
Step 5
Walk the opening of the bag down till
the air pocket is twice as big as the
water pocket.
Gently but firmly squeeze the scissors
shut until you cleave the excess plastic
off.
Step 6
Net fish and drop it into the small
container of its living quarters water.
Step 3
Tie bag off loosely. It will be easier to
insert into outer bag!!!!!
Insert Water Bottle mouth down into
plastic bag.
Step 7
If you aligned the scissors on the
proper side of the bag your bag should
look like this. If there is water on your
workbench and the fish is flopping
around you probably performed one of
the above tasks improperly.
Start
again at step 1.
Step 10
Step 4
Pour fish into water bottle mouth.
Lay the bag on it’s side. If the proper
mixture of air/water is present your fish
should be able to swim upright with the
bag in this position. Ignore Judy she
likes to lay on her side!!
Get out your form and look up the item
number of the fish you just bagged. In
this case it is item 25.
Step 11
Step 8
Take your sharpe…..
20
Step 14
Step 18
…and write the number 2 on the bag.
Step 12
Ride the inner bag down till it bottoms
out in the outer bag.
Gently but firmly squeeze the scissors
shut until you cleave the excess plastic
off.
Step 19
Step 15
Take your sharpie…
Twist the outer bag excess plastic until
the bag is firm.
Step 16
… and write the number 5 on the
bag…
Step 13
Tie the bag off as tight as you can get
it.
Step 17
Insert the knot end of the bag you just
prepared into the opening of the outer
bag (previously empty). This is done
this way to eliminate corners in the
bottom of the bag to prevent the fish
from suffocation.
Lay the bag on its side and align the
scissors to the excess plastic side of
the knot.
This is how your bag should look if you
aligned the scissors to the proper side
of the knot. If there is water on your
work bench and your fish is flopping
around start again from step 1. If you
made the same error back in step back
in step 8 replace your fish in his
beanie, put away all your packing
materials and throw away your show
form. You are probably not going to
have all your fish bagged up in time to
get them to the show. Practice your
bagging techniques at a latter date.
Remember practice makes perfect.
Editor’s Note:
Although the size of the bag to be used in
bagging fish is not identified in the Standard
above, the preferred bag to use is 4” x 12”
and better yet 4” x 14”. The reason, that the
4” bag is preferred, is that most shows do
not have access to the cut bottles used here,
and the larger bag is easier to handle for
someone with large hands. Also, if you have
ever rebagged 500 fish after a show, you
know it is very cumbersome to use smaller
bags!! These bags are available from IBC
Sales found on page 23.
Also, wrapping the finished bag in
newspaper or placing the bag in a brown
paper bag helps to protect the fish from the
shock of bright light in a small container.
Often times, a box of fish sits open at a show
before they are benched. Sieg Illig (past
Grand Champion) has been “Brown
Bagging” for years!!
