P i K a P Pa a l P h a at P u r d u e u n i v e r s i t y honoring our legacy, securing our Future The Campaign for Beta Phi the camPaign For Beta Phi THE LEGACY OF BETA PHI F or 90 years, the Beta Phi chapter of Pi Kappa alpha has been an important part of Purdue uni- versity. While many brothers have gone on to successful and distinguished careers in business, law, athletics, medicine, engineering, and countless other endeavors, the common bond of our brotherhood remains, along with our shared principles and values. most of us can trace the roots of our success to one place: Beta Phi and the years we spent together at Purdue. the early training we received through our Fraternity—including leadership, organizational and social skills, teamwork, and character—has been integral to our personal success. our multiple smythe awards, grand Prix performances, athletic trophies, and philanthropic causes speak to our past accomplishments. While today’s college experience may differ compared to the one you knew, there is an unbroken chain of Pike brotherhood at Purdue that has continued for nearly a century since our origins as the emanon club. Beta Phi alumni can be proud of the legacy we have helped create and the quality of our chapter that carries on today. NOW IS THE TIME We have the opportunity to ensure the Beta Phi experience for future generations. the following pages detail the steps needed to complete the renovation of the chapter house. this project will not only serve the immediate needs of our undergraduates, but will also preserve our home as a premier facility for all Pikes to use and enjoy in the years ahead. if we wish for the Beta Phi chapter to maintain its record of accomplishment, we must commit ourselves to this grand endeavor. as alumni, we have both a privilege and a duty to preserve the legacy of our great Fraternity for future generations. honoring our legacy “ Only after we have experienced and enjoyed the feelings of brotherhood can we come to understand the fraternal bonds that last our lifetime. With this heritage it is appropriate that we find ways to give back to Beta Phi at Purdue. Some give time and talents while others can give financial support. We all need to find ways to give and secure the future of our Chapter so that future generations can enjoy these special bonds of brotherhood. “ RICH RuSSELL ’58, Beta Phi Foundation President securing our Future WHY WE MuST SuCCEED hile our Beta Phi experience is certainly more than the bricks COMPETITION. My involvement with Beta Phi in recent years has reminded me how strong the fraternal bonds are. Whether the guys I meet are younger or older, we quickly become friends because of our common experiences. We now have both the opportunity and privilege to provide the same experience for our kids and grandkids. “ BRIAN DOOLITTLE ’70, caPital camPaign chairman The original 1960s boiler has surpassed its expected life cycle and, before it completely fails, it must be replaced. The electrical service to the chapter house is insufficient and in need of repair, and the new HVAC system will remove unsightly window AC units. honoring our legacy OuR PLAN TO SECuRE OuR FuTuRE a new era for Beta Phi has begun. our location on campus continues to grow in prominence as campus improvements and the addition of the Purdue Wel- PROjECT ESTIMATE come arch across from the chapter house beautify the overall campus. Purdue fraternities still play a relevant role in the lives of young men. today, more than ever, we must provide young college men with a supportive group-living environment that offers them a solid foundation for their education and also affords them opportunities for the development of leadership and social skills. together with our young brothers, who have already made their own commitments to the campaign, the alumni leadership of the Beta Phi campaign committee is steadfast in this major undertaking. now we are seeking alumni to provide financial and volunteer support, which will be crucial to lead this project. each of us benefited from the generosity, work, and sacrifice of those who went before us. We all enjoyed the home and brotherhood Beta Phi provided during our years at Purdue. WILL YOu ANSWER THE CALL? now it is your turn to step up and support the financial challenge associated with this project, ensuring that the same valuable experience we enjoyed is available for others who follow us. Balancing student needs of privacy, study space, computer labs, recreation space, food service, etc., is a challenging proposition. today’s students demand a better living facility, and the apartment complexes and university housing facilities continue to remake student housing for the 21st century. Fraternities must renovate to stay competitive in the local housing market. the educational facilities proposed at the Pi Kappa alpha chapter house will be great enhancements to the living/learning environment within the house. Purdue university supports fraternity and sorority life, as it does all student involvement in leadership, community service, and other student organizations. success or failure for fraternities rests squarely on the shoulders of the undergraduate brothers to recruit new members and on alumni to provide a solid foundation. it is important that all fraternities develop a strategic plan to deal with membership recruitment issues that include keeping pace with facility needs. since the founding of the Beta Phi chapter of Pi Kappa alpha, alumni have been providing support to Purdue and your chapter in record numbers. We applaud your efforts to enhance the living/learning environment for your chapter members! sincerely, l. tony hawkins, Ph. d. dean of students Pi KaPPa alPha PreamBle For the establishment of friendship on a firmer and more lasting basis, for the promotion of brotherly love and kind feeling; for the mutual benefit and advancement of the interests of those with whom we sympathize and deem worthy of our regard; we have resolved to form a fraternity, believing that thus we can most successfully accomplish our object.
