In 1952 Eric Shipton saw the Imja Tse
rising from the sea of glacial ice and
named it Island Peak. Island Peak stands
at the head of the Imja Khola Valley.
Island Peak is one of the most popular
trekking peaks in the Khumbu region, and
was first climbed by Charles Evans, Alf
Gregory, Charles Wylie, Tenzing Norgay,
and seven Sherpas in 1953 during the
preparations for the first ascent of Everest.
There are two distinct summits to Lobuche Peak:
Lobuche East (6,119m/20,070ft) and Lobuche West
(6,145m/20,161ft). Although a continuous ridge
connects the two peaks, there is a sharp gap and a
considerable distance between them. Lobuche is an
attractive summit, offering a variety of established
routes as well as an opportunity for new routes.
When viewed from Pheriche, the dark triangle of the
rocky East Face rises above the moraines of the
Khumbu Glacier to the icy skyline.
Pumori is a mountain situated just eight
kilometers west of Mount Everest, close to the
famous Kala Pathar viewpoint. Pumori was
named by the famous climber George Mallory
and translates as“un-married daughter” in the
Sherpa language. Pumori is a popular climbing
peak with its easiest route graded as Class 3.
During a German-Swiss expedition in 1962,
Gerhard Lenser became the first to summit
Pumori.
Cholatse (also known as Jobo Lhaptshan)
is connected to Taboche (6,501m) by a
long ridge. The Chola glacier descends off
the east face. The north and east faces of
Cholatse can be seen from Dughla along
the trail to Mount Everest Base Camp.
Vern Clevenger, Galen Rowell, John
Roskelley, and Bill O'Connor were the first
to summit Cholatse via the southwest
ridge on 22 April 1982. Renny Jackson
successfully scaled the technically
challenging north face route in 1984.
