I want to personally thank everyone for their generous support! Your volunteer time and financial support has made a real difference! I cannot say thank you enough for everything. I am fortunate to be part of such an incredible community! ANNUAL GIFT ~ Our Annual Gift Campaign is approaching 53% participation and we have donations totaling over $170,000, so far. This is great! Please know there is still time to send in a donation, and help us move toward accomplishing a first ever goal of 100% participation by all families at an amount that is significant to their family! We accept donations through the end of June of this year. You can send them in to the school, at 800 Merlin Dr. Lafayette, CO 80026 OR drop it off in the Friends of Peak to Peak box in the south building. As I stated in my report at the Annual Meeting, Annual Gift is the cornerstone of our fund development efforts. It provides a solid flow of unrestricted support and flexibility for the administration. Success with the Annual Gift Campaign helps with critical grant, foundation and business support. Thank you! Gifts from the Heart ~ The staff has been receiving their Gifts from the Heart…and because we did well with auction proceeds in general, most of the needs they listed were purchased! These items were identified by our staff as instructional priorities, and they are busy putting them to go use! Thank you so much for your generosity! Run for the Peak ~ What a great day we had for the event!! We have lots of great prize packages! Please send in your donations, if you have not already done so! I opened my eyes and found myself looking at a large Garboozle which I ignored. When I got out of bed, my feet found a pair of boots, which I munched, but found lacking. I started to leave the room. At the door, I saw a whole plethora of doorknobs in the shape of an angry face, which was not too unusual. But this was no ordinary door. “What do you want?” queried the door. “I’d like to get out of this room,” I stated in a high, slurred voice. “You will stay here until you have completed my task,” stated the door. “Pluck the fruit of the Jujuborgle tree.” “How?” “You cannot.” “Which means?” “You will stay.” Scarlet Sunrise Kaatje Jones “When I woke up one morning from unsettling dreams… ” I was a bird, with feathery limbs immobile under clinging bed-sheets. The alarm went off again and I waddled forward on short legs out of their embrace to poke the snooze button with my beak. The room had drastically changed overnight, the colors more vivid by far than they had been in the morning. I peered at the dresser-top mirror with its cluttered surface. What kind of bird was I? I clumsily opened my wings and flapped them. The room lurched drunkenly by as I figured out flight and finally landed on a makeup case that had seen better days. The reflection in the mirror was unmistakable: a phoenix-scarlet and gold plumage bright in the early morning sun. I blinked at the mirror. My eyelids closed upwards. One’s Laughter, Another’s Pain Celia Marshall Celia awoke one morning soaking wet with a terrible back pain. Glancing around she noticed a strange difference, she felt as though her room had shrunk around her. Standing up, she found herself comfortable on all fours. She turned to see her waterbed had broken under her weight, water was everywhere. An overwhelming hunger growling in her stomach, Celia began walking towards the kitchen; she got a glimpse of herself in the mirror. A trunk? In the kitchen, she opened the refrigerator. There was a flurry of useless wings; a penguin lay crumpled on the floor. Celia looked at the small bird, with sudden comprehension she asked “Mom?” “Yup, your father is a lion.” Up above, the little green aliens chuckled to themselves. This joke never got old. $! The Metamorphosis: Down In Flames Christy Go When I woke up one morning, I had been transformed into a dragon. “Oh my gosh, what happened?” I thought as I stared at my bright scales, sharp claws, gigantic tail and huge, papery wings. Frantically, I threw myself from the bed and crashed to the floor. “Christy, are you alright?” my mom called. “I’m fine!” I yelled in a loud roar. I heard a thump. My mom had fainted. In panic, I burst open the door, coming face to face with my dad. He had the tazer. “Away, you demon!” he cried, swinging the tazer at me. I followed my instincts and the next thing I knew, my window was broken and I was in the air outside of my room, papery wings bleeding from the glass… Furniture Zac Garcia Angry words have put me in this tiny wooden prison. Silence is the key. My clock glares unflinchingly at me. One would think that he doesn’t fully comprehend my situation. I attempt to stand. I can’t. My feet and legs (all four of them?) are immobile, firmly secured to the wooden floor beneath me. My arms seem to have melded to my sides and I am motionless. Within chasms where eyes should be my clock reflects my image; horrifying, yet I cannot turn away. My skin is now a cool mahogany. My spine has split into four symmetric columns and my body sits straight and rigid against the wall. I am perfectly still. I am frozen in time and in space, forever lost in this cruel, inanimate world. Flash Fiction Catie Widmann You must’ve had a fish as a child. Everyone did. Remember that amazement that filled you as you stared at its iridescent, shiny scales? I awoke with a start; my fluorescent lampshade turned on and reflected blue sparks around the room. I screamed and hauled myself to the bathtub. The water cooled my burning skin and my family sprinted in gawking at the impossibility. Doctors couldn’t and wouldn’t help. We all thought about similar problems: work, housing, secrecy, safety, a normal life. They tried fish food and canned tuna which was both appalling. I was disgusted, hungry, and claustrophobic in the fresh-water bathtub. The people at Sea-World offered me a job. Our family just moved to Bermuda. The people in Atlantic really aren’t all they’re known for. A Magical Metamorphosis Elyssa Ridinger Am I?? Could it be?? I’m a fairy!! But what will people think of me? Better keep it low key. “Mom, please don’t make me go; I can’t, they’ll see my wings. And my magi cal fairy dust. They won’t recognize me or like me.” “Okay, you may stay.” Uhh, I can’t reach the counter. I wish I could use these wings. Why won’t they work? Why would they? Maybe if I believe they do… … .. “I can fly! I know I can!” I’m doing it, I’m doing it! I wish my room was clean. Let’s try this dust out. Silence fell… (Poof!) I was amazed when it had worked and began trying it on almost everything. Oops! Man, I think I ruined it!! I can’t handle being a fairy. $ @ B7 $" @ 0 H ) B Learn to drive through Boulder Valley School District’s Lifelong Learning Program Driver’s Ed Classes ! %%% & ) ) ( # ' " # $ % * ( & * * $ & ' $ $ +,-.
