Dear Friend,
With tears in his eyes, WXXI “Founding Father”
Harold Hacker addressed a gathering of about
a hundred of our original members at a 40th
Anniversary Reunion at our studios on June 13th
and said, “We did it!” Harold was referring to the
visionary men and women who fought to bring
public broadcasting to Rochester more than four
decades ago. He paid tribute to those who devoted
countless hours to the regulatory hearings, court
battles and fund raising necessary to “birth” an
institution that would become WXXI. And he
especially noted the loyalty of those members who
joined in 1966 and still proudly call themselves
members of the WXXI family!
The memories, stories and warmth of the event are
something that we will always treasure. What fueled
the motivation to start a public television station
in Rochester had much to do with Harold Hacker.
Convinced that public television was a civic good,
Mr. Hacker and his colleagues set forth to obtain
a broadcast license. After five years of hard work,
our neighbors tuned in to WXXI-TV 21 to hear
Mr. Hacker introduce the station’s first broadcast,
Julia Child’s The French Chef. On air he told
viewers that they were about to witness something
the community had never seen or heard before
– educational television on Channel 21. When the
station’s charter was first submitted, we were referred
to as RAETA (Rochester Area Educational Television
Association). Education was a cornerstone of our
mission 40 years ago and remains so today.
Today our commitment to education doesn’t
stop at the television or radio. We complement
our programming with many outreach initiatives
that take our mission to a new level. Recently,
WXXI completed a year-long partnership with the
University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC)
and the local community coalition, The Roadwork
For Success In Young Adulthood. This national
initiative, Raising 100,000 Voices, was designed to
help in understanding the needs and assets of the
community from the point of view of those emerging
into adulthood. Our local effort involved 100
15-24 year olds from the Greater Rochester area in a
film project that encouraged them to share, through
video, the issues they face as emerging adults. They
were given single-use digital cameras and asked
to produce short documentaries. Topics included
everything from teen violence to depression, living
with diabetes to global warming, and more. Thirty of
the participating students presented their videos
at a public screening at the School of
the Arts at the end of June. Later this
month we plan to post the videos on
our web site. Check them out at WXXI.

This kind of outreach effort is why
WXXI was invited by the National Center
for Outreach (NCO) to participate in the Models
of Engagement Summit – where a select group of
stations/organizations talk about what we are doing
to engage our community partners in educational
outreach. We were asked to join this prestigious
group because of our achievements in outreach and
because of our unrelenting effort in providing the
Greater Rochester area with the opportunity to learn.
It seems that the more things change, the more
things stay the same. Our commitment to education
was the driving force behind Rochester’s first public
broadcasting station. Forty years later our television
services, in addition to Channel 21, include four
digital channels (one of them High Definition), four
radio stations, Reachout Radio, and programming
delivered over the Internet. But our driving force
remains the very same.
I ended my remarks to the group gathered in our
studios on June 13th with a quote from one of our
earliest program guides in 1968. We reprinted a
portion of the testimony of Frank Pace, Jr. on his
nomination to be Chairman of the newly established
Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). I
particularly liked this line:
“…public television accords with the American
tradition established by our founding fathers: Any
citizen, rich or poor, irrespective of race, color
or creed, may, with the twist of the wrist, have
available the best of history, art, music, drama or
entertainment.”
Today, because of the commitment and long held
belief of our members, “best of education” also holds
true. Thank you for your commitment to WXXI!

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir brings its audience early folk
songs, beloved hymns, and patriotic salutes. Dating back
150 years, the Choir has inspired people from many walks of
life, including former President Ronald Regan who labeled it
“America’s Choir.”

Tuesday, July 4 at 1 p.m.
From “All Things Considered” to “Entertainment Tonight,” the
Capitol Steps bring political humor wherever they go. Former
Congressional staffers and masters of satire in song, the
group is sure to leave its audience laughing about events on
Capitol Hill. There are only four radio shows a year, so be sure

Garrison Keillor and “A Prairie Home Companion” cast celebrate Independence Day in Great Performances Style!
Airing.on.the.heels.of.the.national.release.of.Garrison Keillor’s A Praire Home Companion feature film, which premiered at
the Little Theater in early June with a special WXXI members viewing, Garrison Keillor’s Independence Day Special: A
Prairie Home Companion at Tanglewood airs Sunday, July 2 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11). This.Great Performances special finds the good people of Lake Wobegon joined by Private Eye Guy Noir, the cowboys Dusty and Lefty, and
special guest star Meryl Streep, who co-starred with Keillor in the film. Also on hand are the Hopeful Gospel Quartet, the
Wailin’ Jennys and, of course, Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band.
“We’re celebrating this great country, with great American stories and great American songs,” Keillor says, noting that the
program marks the townfolks’ first appearance on the acclaimed Great Performances series. “They’re strong, they’re goodlooking, they’re above average and they are excited. And I get to give my annual Lake Wobegon Fourth of July speech.”
One of America’s most beloved humorists, Garrison Keillor started work at Minnesota Public Radio in 1969 on a 6-to-9 a.m.
show called A Prairie Home Companion, named after the Prairie Home cemetery in Moorhead, Minnesota. From this he
developed the idea of adding musical guests and commercials for imaginary products, and in 1974 he hosted the first live
broadcast of the program as it is known today. More than four million listeners now tune in each week to hear the program.
Here at home, A Prairie Home Companion airs Saturdays at 6 p.m. on Classical 91.5/90.3, Sundays at 12 noon on AM
1370, and Mondays at 6 p.m. on WRUR-FM 88.5.
A familiar voice and face on PBS, Keillor is the author of 14 books, including the New York Times best-sellers “Love Me,
Lake Wobegon Summer 1956,” “Wobegon Boy” and “Lake Wobegon Days.” Keillor, who lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, is
a member of the Academy of American Arts & Letters and thinks the Berkshire Mountains, the Massachusetts home of
Tanglewood, broadcast site of the telecast, “one of the beautiful places in our country.

If anyone knows about honor and service its World War II
veteran Ralph Chinelly. Even after serving in the war and
receiving two medals, Mr. Chinelly continued to devote his
time to volunteering and helping fellow veterans. Despite
the fact that Mr. Chinelly is blind, the lives of many veterans
have been improved due to his persistent work. Some of
the assistance that he has provided for veterans includes
obtaining Seeing Eye dogs, portable lung machines,
prescription medications, and walkers and canes. Mr.
Chinelly also helps to preserve the memory of those who
have passed by finding grave markers, flags for caskets,
medals and other symbols of veterans’ service.
All of Mr. Chinelly’s enduring and unselfish work has hardly
gone unnoticed. In 1995 he was presented with the Merit
Award for his service to fellow veterans, and in 2002 was
named Man of the Year by those at the East Rochester
Memorial American Legion Post #1917. Most recently,
however, Senator James S. Alesi selected Mr. Chinelly as
a 2005 Veterans Hall of Fame Honoree. The Hall of Fame
was created to honor and give recognition to outstanding
veterans from New York State who are distinguished in both
their military and civilian lives. From WWII to Hall of Fame,
Mr ..Chinelly.has.served.his.country.and.touched.the.lives.of.
many. He has proved to the world that anything is possible,
no matter what challenges lie in the way.
Mr. Chinelly is an avid listener of WXXI Reachout Radio, a
radio reading service that provides 24-hour per day readings
of local and national newspapers, magazines, and books
for people who are visually impaired, blind or have a
physical disability which prohibits the holding of printed
material, or one with a learning disability such as dyslexia.
“We hear from Ralph on a regular basis,” says Reachout
Radio Program Director Ruth Phinney. “He calls to ask
about something he’s heard in the news, or just to give us
that verbal ‘pat on the back’ for a job well done.” WXXI
Reachout Radio is closed-circuit and is accessible through
a specially-tuned radio which is provided free of charge to
eligible applicants. The service is provided in partnership
with ABVI-Goodwill Industries of Greater Rochester.

Caputo Continues to Provide
Political Analysis for WXXI
Michael Caputo, WXXI-TV’s News and Public Affairs Director for the past four
years, has accepted a position with the Center for Governmental Research but
he will continue to provide political analysis for WXXI. Caputo will also continue
writing his Political Notebook, a weekly political analysis blog posted on WXXI’s
Web site, wxxi.org and linked to www.cgr.org, the Center for Governmental
Research Web site. In addition, Caputo will present the Political Notebook
every Monday morning at 8:35 on AM 1370 during Morning Edition, where
he talks with local host Alex Crichton about the political news of the day. Julie
Philipp has been named acting WXXI-TV News Director.
Caputo launched his Political Notebook in 2005 and since then, it has evolved
into a weekly column posted on WXXI’s Public Newsroom at wxxi.org and

Ted Koppel Joins NPR as Senior News Analyst
Ted Koppel, one of America’s most-honored
journalists, has joined National Public Radio (NPR)
as Senior News Analyst, contributing to its news
programming on broadcast radio and on all new
media platforms.
Koppel will provide analysis, commentary and
perspective on NPR News national programming
approximately 50 times a year, including the newsmagazines Morning Edition – heard weekdays from
5 a.m. to 10 a.m. on AM 1370, WJSL 90.3 and
WRUR-FM 88.5 – and All Things Considered heard
weekdays from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on AM 1370, and
4 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on WJSL 90.3 and WRUR-FM 88.5.
“I have been an unabashed fan of NPR for many
years and have stolen untold excellent ideas from
its programming. It’s time to give something back,”
said Koppel.

Koppel’s half-century broadcasting career spans radio and television and includes every major professional
recognition. He is best-known for his role as anchor and managing editor of Nightline, which has defined
excellence in television news reporting, interviewing and analysis since its debut in March 1980. During his
42-year career at ABC News, which concluded in November 2005, Koppel has also worked as anchor of
The ABC Saturday Night News, chief diplomatic correspondent, Vietnam War correspondent and Hong
Kong bureau chief, and has had a major reporting role in every presidential campaign since 1964.
Additionally, Koppel’s work will appear on www.NPR.org and in NPR Podcasts, which recently surpassed 9
million downloads in the four months since launch and are consistently among the most-popular on iTunes.
John Overlan Named Executive Director of Broadcast Production
WXXI has promoted John Overlan to Executive Director of
Broadcast Production. Overlan has worked at WXXI for over 25
years and was previously the Executive Producer of Regional
Productions. As Executive Director of Broadcast Production, he
will be responsible for production activities of the television
division across all platforms; including analog, digital, interactive
and others. Overlan will manage production activities for studio,
remote and field programs and direct scheduling of appropriate
equipment and personnel. Most importantly he will assure
appropriate production values and processes are in place for
television programs and formats.

Nature: Shark Mountain airs 7/2 at 8 p.m.
Some 300 miles off Costa Rica is Cocos Island, a tiny
Pacific outpost that was once a favorite haunt of pirates.
Cocos, a designated World Heritage Site, lies directly in the
path of powerful ocean currents that often collide with the
island, churning the waters into an undersea storm. A team
of expert and intrepid divers, led by renowned underwater
film specialists Howard and Michele Hall, leads viewers into
this ultimate domain of sharks.
Niagara Falls airs 7/5 at 8 p.m., 7/7 at 11 a.m., 7/8
at 9 a.m. and 7/9 at 4 p.m.
Niagara Falls is more than the celebration of a natural
wonder; it’s a study of human achievement and human
folly on an epic scale. It’s a tale of affable lunacy and high
drama, danger and desire. The awesome Niagara Falls
was the nation’s first great symbol, an emblem of a vast,
untamed continent of beauty and limitless resources. The
fate of that beauty and bounty is the focus of the film.
Soundstage: “Garbage” airs 7/6 at 10 p.m.
Garbage was formed in 1993 by consummate producer/
drummer Butch Vig and producers/multi-instrumentalists
Steve Marker and Duke Erickson. One year later they added
the beguiling and sultry Shirley Manson to front the band.
Garbage is one of the most respected groups of the 90s
alterna-scene and its trademark sound aptly marries electronic loops with rock ’n’ roll. The Garbage set includes select
songs ranging from impressive mega-hits to fan favorites.

American Masters Tells the Story of Marilyn Monroe
through the Iconography of the 20th century
There is an oft told tale of Marilyn Monroe walking down a
New York City street, incognito, turning to her companion and
saying, “Do you want to see her?” With that, she threw off
all vestiges of Norma Jeane and miraculously transformed.
There were no grand gestures, no change of clothes, no
make-up. It was a simple shift, a slithering out of one skin into
the other. The “outing” of Marilyn is something she looked at
with both skepticism and awe. Arguably the most photographed
person ever, she once said, “I carry Marilyn Monroe around
with me like an albatross.” In this new film American Masters
offers a unique take on one of the world’s first superstars by
turning to the still photographs that captured Monroe’s beauty,
complexity and, ultimately, her own complicated relationship
with the star side of herself.

uniquely patriotic and was central to the folk music revival.
His is a complex story filled with frenetic creative energy
and a treasure trove of cultural history as well as personal

Sessions Live at St. Luke’s” This program was recorded
live at St. Luke’s in London’s East End during the current
concert tour. Springsteen performs songs selected from

Coordinating Committee (SNCC) a group of young girls,
ranging in ages from 10 to 15, were unjustly arrested
for protesting in the rural, and then segregated, town
of Americus, Georgia. Held for six weeks in an
abandoned jail, these children faced inhumane
treatment, including sexual abuse. LuLu and the
Girls of Americus Georgia, airing for the first time on
television, tells this original and untold civil rights story
with intimate and emotional interviews from several of
the female survivors including Rochesterian Lulu
Westbrooks-Griffin.
This award-winning documentary was produced,
directed and written by Richard J. McCollough
and Travis W. Lewis, co-owners of Mirus Video

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir
Salutes America in Song
A love for singing and faith is what brings 360 unrivaled
voices together to form the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
Both men and women represent the Choir from varied
backgrounds and professions. In Honor America, recorded
at the Chautauqua Amphitheater, the Mormon Tabernacle
Choir and Orchestra perform America the Beautiful,
Shenandoah, The Pledge of Allegiance and many more
Patriotic favorites.
Five recordings from the Choir have earned the gold record
status along with two others receiving platinum status. Craig
Jessop has lead the group as Music Director since 1999
and also sang in the Choir for four years while in college.
Honor America airs Tuesday, July 4 at 12 p.m.

On July 14 you’ll get a Backstage Pass
to the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra
Richard Auldon Clark and members of the Manhattan
Chamber Orchestra join Julia Figueras live in Studio E
for the next edition of Backstage Pass. Clark, a violist,
is founder of the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, as well
as Associate Professor of Music at Butler University, and
conductor of the Butler Symphony Orchestra. An upstate
New York native, Clark has returned to his roots with the
Finger Lakes Chamber Music Festival as Music Director.
The festival runs through the end of July. While Mr. Clark
has been a guest with Julia before, this will be the first time
he brings his viola with him.
Backstage Pass, a series dedicated to spotlighting the arts
in Rochester, is made possible in part by a grant from the
Gouvernet Arts Fund at Rochester Area Foundation.
