Dear Friend,
Even if you didn’t have a chance to make it downtown to take in the sights and
sounds of this year’s Rochester International Jazz Festival, you certainly heard about
it. It is a great annual event that showcases our local community to an international
audience and brings out the best in Rochester.
WXXI was present for the entire nine days of the Festival, and we are proud
to give the rest of the country a front row seat to the music and events. Our 2006
Rochester International Jazz Festival series reached a national audience of more
than 3.5 million viewers, while our 2007 series (just seen on WXXI-TV) will premiere this month nationally on
the PBS-HD channel. The series showcases not only the finest musicians in jazz, but also shows the rest of
the nation something that we already know – that Rochester is a center for world-class arts and culture. The
concerts we captured at this year’s Rochester International Jazz Festival series will premiere in spring of 2009
on PBS (our third national presentation from the Festival).
The idea of bringing Rochester to the world (and the world to Rochester) does not begin or end with
the Jazz Festival. WXXI offers viewers and listeners the unparalleled ability to experience music and events
that might not otherwise be possible. While WXXI-TV brings programs like Live from Lincoln Center and The
Metropolitan Opera into your living room, WXXI-FM remains Rochester’s only classical music station. Each day,
Classical 91.5 provides listeners not only the finest selections of classical music from celebrated performers and
composers, but also special series from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and our own
Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. For some, it may be the first time that they have heard Rochester’s worldrenowned Orchestra, and are able to discover music that would otherwise be unavailable to them.
That sense of discovery doesn’t end there, as WXXI has given statewide exposure to many talented regional
artists. The first season of OnStage has given viewers – and listeners as we also feature the series on WRUR 88.5
– the chance to enjoy everything from folk to rock to salsa. OnStage is designed to heighten awareness of local
artists and foster appreciation for a variety of musical styles. You can visit WXXI.org/onstage and find out how
you may attend one of the recording sessions and experience the music live in our studio.
Add PBS programs such as Nature, NOVA and Frontline to national and global news from NPR, and WXXI
provides the opportunity to explore the world from many different angles. This fall we will again be presenting
the finest teachers from our local schools, as Homework Hotline will help kids from Rochester (and the entire
state through public television) with their homework problems. Geared to kids from grades 4-12, this awardwinning program provides a unique and interactive way to learn.
Of course, this is all made possible through your membership support. When you make a contribution

Homework Hotline, that a young person may be inspired enough to pick up an instrument, or that a new voter

GEAR UP FOR A SEASON OF FUN
WITH A NEW TV SERIES THAT
PROMOTES DRIVING SAFELY
Q. What did you think about the idea
of being cartoon characters when you
were first approached with it?
TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI,
the didactic duo whose voices grace the NPR
airwaves on the ever-popular radio show “Car
Talk,” are moving themselves into the world of
animation with the all-new primetime series Click
& Clack’s As The Wrench Turns, premiering
Wednesday, July 9 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21
(cable 11) and WXXI-HD (cable 1011/DT 21.1).
The program takes off from the hit NPR show heard Saturdays
at 10 a.m. and Sundays at 11 a.m. on AM1370/HD91.5-2 and
follows the on- and off-air escapades of Click and Clack, the Tappet
brothers (alter-egos of Tom and Ray Magliozzi) as they try to fix cars,
fend off disgruntled customers and seek out increasingly creative
ways to goof off. Click & Clack’s As The Wrench Turns is set at Car
Talk Plaza, a fictional building that houses their radio studio and their
famed garage in Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

misadventures as a competition with a nearby garage staffed by

RAY: Well, the last time we saw
caricatures of ourselves was when we
showed up on the FCC’s “Most Wanted”
list. So we approached the project with
caution.
TOM: But then we realized how much
sense it made. First of all, we could
spare viewers the trauma of having to
see our actual faces….
RAY: Right. We could imagine PBS
viewers flipping to the Trout Gutting
Channel to find something prettier.
TOM: And then we also realized that,
with animation, we wouldn’t have to sit
in front of cameras all day. We could just
record our voices in our studio and let
somebody else do all the work! Is that
perfect or what?

executive producer Howard K.
Grossman also has developed
an innovative partnership with The
American Association of Motor Vehicle
Administrators (AAMVA). In their role
as a strategic content partner to the
series’ national outreach campaign,
AAMVA will collaborate with Click
& Clack’s As The Wrench Turns to
facilitate the communication of safety
messages, regarding such issues as
distracted driving, safety belts and
teen driving, to the driving public as
they interact with AAMVA members
and state and provincial motor vehicle
agencies.

Q. How accurately does the show portray the behind-the-scenes
world of your radio show and garage?
TOM: Well, in real life, we DO come up with crazy schemes so we
can goof off more. But they never get past the stage of wistful musing.
RAY: The cartoon versions of us actually get to try them out and see
what happens. That’s what makes the stories fun.
TOM: And a lot of funny stuff DOES happen at the real garage. All
kinds of weird characters always seem to be hanging around.
Q. What’s the craziest example of distracted driving you’ve
seen or heard about?
RAY: Our NPR listeners — and we’ve got 4.5 million of them every
week —write to us all the time with stories. The most recent one was
about a woman who was flossing, gargling and brushing her teeth
while driving down the highway. All while opening the window every
time she needed to spit.
TOM: And then she ate her breakfast. We spent a long time trying
to figure out why she didn’t eat breakfast first and then brush her
teeth. These are the kinds of things that bother us.

WXXI Merges Its News Services To Launch
THE WXXI CENTER
FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS

WXXI has merged its radio, television and online news services
to create the WXXI Center for Public Affairs. The combination of services enables
WXXI to offer the most robust collection of broadcast news resources in the
Greater Rochester area, which includees NPR, PBS, the Associated Press, the
Albany news bureau, local reporters and public newsroom interactive.
As an independent voice in a consolidated media landscape, WXXI is
committed to providing objective, in-depth news coverage. In addition to radio
programs like Morning Edition and All Things Considered, and television news
programs like NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and Bill Moyer’s Journal, WXXI’s Center
for Public Affairs provides complete and interactive coverage of the issues that
concern Rochesterians. WXXI is home to the election initiative Voice of the
Voter, and to Brizard: Square One, which dedicated more than 15 hours of news
coverage to introduce the new Rochester City School District Superintendent
Jean-Claude Brizard to the community. The WXXI Center for Public Affairs will
provide more in-depth coverage and interactivity, leverage PBS and NPR news
programs with related local coverage and continue to produce in-depth and
long-form television and radio reports and documentaries giving local relevance
to national issues. In addition, the Center will launch unique outreach initiatives
in an effort to engage citizens in community dialogue.
“Combining our news services will position WXXI as the trusted source
for coverage, debate and civil discussion,” explains WXXI President Norm
Silverstein. “The community has come to rely on WXXI to provide them with
more than just snippets of a news story, equipping them with the knowledge
they need to make informed decisions and take positive actions.”
Leading this effort will be WXXI’s Julie Philipp and Peter Iglinski who
have taken on new roles at the Center for Public Affairs. Philipp will serve as
Managing Editor, and will be responsible for strategic planning, fundraising,
promotions, and long-term goals. Iglinski will serve as Executive Producer, and
will oversee the day-to-day activities in the newsroom, act as project manager,
and be responsible for content on Need to Know and 1370 Connection.

With all that we have going on in our
lives today, leaving a legacy may be
the farthest thing from your mind.
The majority of adults in this country
have done virtually no estate planning at all. Some have made a will,

divorce or remarriage. Oftentimes,
we assume that those we leave

WXXI Garners Four Tellys
For Its Second Opinion
And Onstage Productions
Among thousands of entries from across the nation, WXXI’s Second Opinion and
OnStage brought home four Telly Awards. Honoring excellence in local, regional
and cable TV programs and commercials, the 29th Telly Awards recognized WXXI’s
innovations in medical and musical television.
Utilizing the world-class knowledge of dozens
of health professionals, including many from
the University of Rochester Medical Center
(URMC), WXXI’s national health care series
Second Opinion garnered three Telly Awards.
Each week Emmy award-winning host Dr.
Peter Salgo presents an actual medical case
Second Opinion host Dr. Peter Salgo
to a panel of experts to debate the pros and
cons of diagnostic testing, interpret test results, and prescribe the best course
of action. The episode in which Dr. Salgo lead six panelists in a discussion about
the facts and mysteries surrounding Parkinson’s disease won a silver Telly. The
panelists included: Dr. Louis J. Papa of URMC, Kathy Cole-Kelly of CWRU School
of Medicine, Dr. Robert G. Holloway of University of Rochester School of Medicine
and Dentistry, Dr. Monique Giroux of Boothe Gardner Parkinson’s Care Center,
Glenn McGee, Ph.D. of Alden March Bioethics Institute, and patient John Testa of
Rochester. Episodes on suicide prevention and ovarian cancer were also recognized with bronze Telly Awards. Produced in association with West 175 Productions
and the University of Rochester Medical Center, Second Opinion’s executive
producers are Fiona Willis and Elizabeth Brock. The series airs Saturdays at
3 p.m. and Sundays at 1:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11), and on more than
225 PBS stations across the country.
Honored with a bronze Telly Award in the
entertainment category, OnStage highlights
a wide range of performers from Upstate New
York. Hosted by WXXI-FM mid-day host and
music director Julia Figueras, each program
presents an hour-long concert with Figueras
posing questions to the artists between their
Sarahi performs on OnStage
sets. Not only can the WXXI studio concerts be
seen on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11) and heard on WRUR 88.5, interested concertgoers
can also attend live tapings (http://www.wxxi.org/onstage). OnStage airs Sundays
at 7 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11) and Saturdays at 3 p.m. on WRUR 88.5.
The series is made possible in part by the New York State Music Fund, established
by the New York State Attorney General at the Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.
The series’ executive producer is Todd McCammon.
PHILIPP ATTENDED WETA NEWS ACADEMY
JULIE PHILIPP, MANAGING EDITOR OF WXXI CENTER FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS, was one of 12 public broadcasting journalists
selected by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and WETA Washington, D.C. to participate in the WETA News Academy
for public broadcasters. Philipp headed to WETA’s headquarters in Arlington, Virginia on June 16 to join fellow journalists for a fiveday conference, which focused on local election coverage. The group learned how to implement best practices and enhance their
coverage of state, county and city elections in 2008. They also had the chance to speak with staffers of NewsHour with Jim Lehrer
and Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and National Journal.
At the Academy, Philipp also shared some of WXXI’s election-related programming, both to inspire others at the Academy and
receive valuable feedback to enhance WXXI’s coverage of Election ‘08.

CHASING CHURCHILL:
In Search of My Grandfather
Descended from nobles and born to serve the free world, Winston Churchill is
one of the world’s most illustrious historical figures. With his public life explicitly
documented for posterity, the man behind the façade will be revealed during an
in-depth exploration of his passions: art, literature and travels. Covering lands far
and wide from his homes in London and Kent, Celia Sandys, Churchill’s granddaughter, walks in the footsteps of her family’s legendary patriarch in PBS’s
Chasing Churchill: In Search of My Grandfather. The 65-year-old Sandys will
provide a rare glimpse into the private endeavors of the world leader.
Churchill’s art and words were tools to get him through the anxiety of
leading a nation. Now viewers must rely on Sandys, one of the people who knew
Churchill best, to decode a man who helped save the world from tyranny.

A CAPITOL FOURTH 2008
highlights
Entering its 28h annual year, A Capitol Fourth 2008
will light up the many historical sites of Washington,
D.C. on July 4th. From the West Lawn of the Capitol,
award-winning music artists will croon the celebratory songs of America’s independence. Huey Lewis
and the News (pictured lower left), Taylor Hicks, Jerry
Lee Lewis, and Brian Stokes Mitchell, along with
prominent classical singers Hayley Westenra and
Harolyn Blackwell will all take the stage to celebrate
freedom. The National Symphony Orchestra will end
the program by playing Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture
with live cannon fire provided by the United States
Army Presidential Salute Battery.
Airing immediately after A Capitol Fourth 2008
at 9:30 p.m. will be 3, 2, 1, Fireworks, which takes
an inside look at what goes into a fireworks display.
The half-hour show goes behind the scenes to show
viewers every step of a fireworks production.
For viewers who want to relive the patriotic
events of yesteryear, A Capitol Fourth 2007 will re-air
immediately following 3, 2, 1, Fireworks at 10 p.m.
Though the traditions remain, the dynamic force of
music makes for a different celebration every year.

With crime and vice hindering urban
community members, a story of three
boys who made it out of the ‘hood is a
success in itself. The fact that the boys
are now doctors is inspiring. The Pact
is a film that documents the promise
the boys made to each other – that
they’d stay off drugs, out of jail, and go
to college.

Two Men and
a Baby Grand
Joe Werner, Principal Keyboard and Personnel Manager for the RPO, and Michael
Landrum, Roberts Wesleyan pianist, join host Julia Figueras on Backstage Pass for
an all-French program for Piano Four-Hands.
An active recitalist and orchestral soloist, Mr. Werner has performed with
the RPO in concerto repertoire ranging from Bach to Barber. One of the busiest
collaborative pianists in Rochester, he performs regularly with a host of Eastman
School of Music Artist Faculty members and RPO soloists. He has recorded on the
Columbia, Vanguard, NEXUS, Musical Heritage Society and Naxos labels. He also
teaches piano and chamber music at the Hochstein Music School.
A native of Augusta, Georgia, Mr. Landrum is Professor of Music and Film
Studies at Roberts Wesleyan College. In 1976, Mr. Landrum won first prize in the
J. S. Bach International Competition for Pianists in Washington, D. C. Mr. Landrum
has appeared as guest recitalist at Nazareth College, at SUNY Geneseo, and at
the Jewish Community Center, and has performed frequently at Roberts Wesleyan
College and on the “Live from Hochstein” series. He made his debut in 1998 with
the Buffalo Philharmonic, and has been featured in several concerts with the
Society for Chamber Music in Rochester.

There is a lot of information available about the
transition to digital TV (DTV). Below is a list of
defi nitions to help you navigate this information
and make sense of what you hear, read and see.
ANALOG TELEVISION
The way most people receive their TV signals today. Analog has
been the standard broadcast technology since the inception of
television.
DIGITAL TELEVISION (DTV)
A higher quality, more efficient way to transmit TV signals than
the traditional analog TV system. DTV provides better picture
and sound quality and makes it possible for stations to provide
more free programming in the same broadcast space. DTV also
expands and improves communications capabilities for public

to Know
HIGH-DEFINITION TELEVISION (HDTV)
A form of digital television (DTV) with image resolution that is
superior to traditional formats. Not all DTV is high definition. To
enjoy the benefits of high definition television, viewers need an
HD television set.
CONVERTER BOX
A set-top device that connects to a traditional analog television
and enables it to receive digital broadcast signals via an antenna.
With a converter box, viewers can enjoy the benefits of DTV
including higher quality picture and sound and enhanced viewing
options.
DIGITAL CABLE
A higher-tier pay TV service provided by many cable companies
to people who wish to receive more channels and enhanced
viewing options.
THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS
COMMISSION (FCC)
A United States government agency created, directed and
empowered by congressional statute. The FCC is charged with
regulating all non-federal government use of the radio spectrum
(which includes radio and television broadcasting); and all interstate telecommunications (cable, satellite and wire) as well as all
international communications that originate or terminate in the
United States.
FEBRUARY 17, 2009
The date on which the nation will complete its transition to an
all-digital broadcast television system. At midnight on February
17, 2009, all high-power TV broadcasters will cease their analog
transmissions and transmit exclusively in digital.

SHAKIN’
WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN’, an exciting documentary series, explores rockabilly, the brash,
fast-paced 1950s mix of blues, gospel, jazz,
country and popular music that is a foundation of rock and roll. Hosted by Rosie Flores,
the series visits the cradle of rockabilly,
Memphis, and presents the music’s female
stars. It profiles the influential radio program,
“The Louisiana Hayride” and explores the
rockabilly sounds of California.
In an era when America was tuning into
Patti Page and Mitch Miller, rockabilly was a
bold, young upstart, like Marlon Brando in the
movie “The Wild One.” Whole Lotta Shakin’
profiles the stars of the genre, including
Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and
Buddy Holly, and shares the stories of the
period’s best-loved songs, from “Rave On” to
“I Walk the Line.”

Peace Talks Radio:
CLIMATE CHANGE
AND CONFLICT
Peace Talks Radio looks at the 2007 winners of the Nobel Peace Prize - Former
U.S. Vice President Al Gore and the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change. By awarding the prize to Gore and the IPCC, the Nobel committee
seemed interested in promoting the link between climate change and the threat
to peace. Could the unchecked effects of climate change lead to conflicts and
civil war within nations, or war between nations? Could a collective effort to save
the planet from the harmful consequences of climate change actually promote
peaceful cooperation within and between nations?
Peace Talks Radio host Carol Boss talks with two scholars who have studied
the possible links between climate change and conflict. Later in the program, Dan
Smith, Secretary General of International-Alert, an independent peace building
organization that works in over 20 countries to promote lasting peace and
security in communities affected by violent conflict. He’s the author of the report
“A Climate of Conflict: The Links Between Climate Change, Peace and War.”
