Dear Friend,
When we hear the term, The Greatest Generation,
we immediately think of the men and women who
sacrificed so much during World War II and who
helped shape America as we know it today. To help
tell their stories and to preserve their legacy, we
are proud to be premiering the newest series from
award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns – The War.
This emotional program airs over seven
evenings beginning September 23rd at 8 p.m. From
explorations of the war’s origins to battles that signified its end, Ken Burns still manages to humanize
this significant piece of our history. World War II
was much more than a history of battles. It was
a history of stories – from individuals across the
globe, and locally, from brave soldiers who fought
for our freedom. It is those local stories that WXXI
has been working to capture over the last several
months. Through the help of Preferred Care, WXXI
has collected a number of those memories and
you will see many of them throughout the month
– recollections of a time passed, told in a present
day perspective. But just as compelling, and perhaps
more intimate, is a special War outreach effort WXXI
is undertaking on our Web site. If you go to
WXXI.org/thewar, you will be taken to a page
where stories can be shared in words and pictures.
You can also search local stories and find similar
ones from across the country, as well as participate
in the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project.
WXXI has long been a leader in bringing the
community together with shared stories and shared
experiences. With this Web companion to The War,
we are helping to bridge the community’s generations. We lose more than 1,000 WWII veterans
each day in this country, and with that comes lost
memories – lost opportunities for voices to be heard.
If you have a family member or a friend who has
their own personal recollections, we encourage you
to guide them to WXXI.org/thewar to share their
unique and special experiences of WWII.
Since we are exploring experiences to grow
from, I hope you have the opportunity to visit
another ambitious Web venture from WXXI. The
Power of Forgiveness is a project born from the
shared belief that expressing love and forgiveness
can affect positive change in individuals and communities. If you visit
WXXI.org/forgiveness you will be able
to read, hear and watch compelling
and sometimes heartbreaking stories
from individuals who, in their hearts
chose to forgive. With such a diverse community
as ours, we can all deepen our understanding from
these stories and can only grow stronger from sharing our own. If you would like to know more about
The Power of Forgiveness or to share your story in
further detail, go online at WXXI.org/forgiveness or
call WXXI’s Shelley Figueroa at 585/258-0278.
And in talking about community this month,
I would be remiss in not mentioning the premiere
of OnStage, our weekly television and radio series
that brings the music of Rochester into homes
across our region. As with this summer’s Rochester
International Jazz Festival program, OnStage
provides yet another example of WXXI promoting the rich talent that the arts in this community
provides. So take time to welcome The Dady
Brothers into your homes for the OnStage premiere
September 16th at 7 p.m. on WXXI-TV (and
September 13th at 6 p.m. on WRUR 88.5.) Turn to
page 21 in this month’s Station Signals to read more
or visit WXXI.org/onstage.
Many stories are being told and many voices
are being heard this month at WXXI, but the most
important voice has been yours. You’ve entrusted
us, one of the only locally owned media groups in
the region, the responsibility to help strengthen this
community. Thank you for your support!
I hope you will watch and hear some amazing
stories this month – and I encourage you to share
some stories of your own.
Best regards,
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President & CEO

Recently in the U.S. it seems as if partisan rancor has replaced
reasoned debate; mainstream media has become contentious
and ideological; and discussions of important issues are being
dominated by emotion rather than by facts and analysis. The
debate series Intelligence Squared U.S. attempts to change
this trend and raise the level of public discourse on the key
issues of our day.

Serving the Rochester area since 1981,
Ferrel’s Garage is a full-service automotive repair facility specializing in drivability
problems.
Paul Ferrel, Owner, explained the variety
of services available at Ferrel’s Garage: “We

as putting on new wiper blades; to standard
factory maintenance, such as oil changes; to
complex repairs, such as finding a malfunctioning sensor in your vehicle. We are AAA

their vehicle requires the suggested repairs.
We strive to properly repair your vehicle!”
Ferrel’s Garage has been an underwriter
of Car Talk on WXXI-AM for six years. “We

something back to the community. We have
also participated in challenge grants and
donated automotive service coupons to the

Wins CINE Golden Eagle Award
Albert Paley: In Search of the Sentinel,
a film written, produced and directed by Tony Machi of Machi
& Machi Communications and presented by WXXI won a
prestigious CINE Golden Eagle Award. The CINE Golden
Eagle Award recognizes excellence in professional and
amateur works and is known internationally as a symbol of the
highest production standards in filmmaking and videography.
Narrated by actress Jane Alexander, Albert Paley:
In Search of the Sentinel examines the current chapter in
the life and career of American sculptor Albert Paley. The
program explores Paley’s fusion of art and technology by
detailing the creation and installation of “The Sentinel” at the
Rochester Institute of Technology, the largest public sculpture
on any university campus in the United States. Other notable
works from Paley’s career add further insight into Paley’s
sensibilities on abstract and literal form, his commitment
to architecturally site-specific work and his vast knowledge
of metal technology. Paley also speaks candidly about the
influence of his two near-death experiences on his career. In
addition, his family and colleagues reflect on Paley’s art and
his creative process.
More than 300 judges viewed and evaluated hundreds
of entries submitted to the 2007 CINE competition. Since its
founding in 1957, CINE has been dedicated to discovering,
rewarding, educating and supporting established and
emerging talent in film and video. Among great talents
whose first major awards included a CINE Golden Eagle
are Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard and documentarians
Ken Burns, Charles Guggenheim, Stanley Nelson, Albert
Maysles and Frederick Wiseman.

Homework Hotline and Assignment: The World Hit the Books
It’s back to school for WXXI when Homework Hotline and Assignment: The World
kick off their new seasons. Homework Hotline, WXXI’s live homework help show,
launches its 17th season on Monday, September 17th at 5:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21
(cable 11), and on public television stations across New York State. Assignment:
The World, the nation’s longest-running classroom program, launches its 49th
season on Thursday, September 6th at 6 a.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11), and on
public television stations across the country.
Homework Hotline is a half-hour, live call-in program geared to children grades four through 12 that provides
the tools students need to succeed with homework, and supports academic achievement across a variety of New
York State Learning Standards. The program is produced in partnership with the New York City Dial-A-Teacher
and Rochester Dial-A-Teacher, which staff phone banks with teachers to help kids with their homework. Selected
students have their homework problems worked out live on the air by Homework Hotline teachers/hosts who are
experts in subjects across the curriculum.
Launching the same day as the show premieres is the new Homework Hotline Web site, homework-hotline.
org, which features a video player where visitors can search by subject matter segments from the show, two
interactive video games, homework help tips and a list of educational links, broadcast schedules, teacher host
bios and more. Homework Hotline is funded by New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), Daisy Marquis Jones
Foundation and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.
Assignment: The World (ATW) host Teej Jenkins delivers news and current events in a safe
environment for students in grades 4-8. Produced by WXXI in conjunction with The Associated
Press, ATW is a fast-paced, interactive program that helps young viewers understand the world
around them and understand how events in other countries can and do affect their lives. ATW’s
Web site, www.atwonline.org, delivers new program streaming, download features and program
archives. Distributed nationally by the Agency for Instructional Technology (www.ait.net), ATW is
used in classrooms in 15 states and is broadcast on more than 90 public television stations.
Gifts from IRAs: Better Than Cash for Your Annual Gift
A new gift opportunity for
donors age 70½
Congress recently revised the tax laws to permit
donors over age 70½ to make charitable gifts
through their IRAs. Up to $100,000 can be given
in this manner, in 2007. Although no income tax
deductions are available for IRA gifts, IRA donors
can still save significant taxes by diverting otherwise fully taxable income to worthwhile causes.
IRA funds are heavily taxed whenever you
withdraw them, at rates as high as 35%. What’s
more, the tax burden never goes away—even
your heirs will pay income tax on IRA funds they
receive from your estate, and federal estate taxes
may apply as well. In 2007 you can augment your
usual gift to qualified organizations by the amount
of tax that otherwise would have come due on your
required distribution. Individuals who do not itemize
may also benefit from the new law, because the
IRA gift is not counted as income.
For more information on the variety of ways
to give to WXXI, please contact Kathy Russell,
Director of Major and Planned Giving at (585)
258-0319 or at [email protected]
IRA Gift Rule Book
Donor must be past the age of 70½ and own an
IRA. Other retirement plans such as pensions and
401(k) plans are not eligible.
Only the IRA trustee can transfer gift amounts to
a qualified organization. If IRA owners withdraw
funds and then contribute them to charity separately, withdrawn amounts will be included in the
donor’s gross income.
Gift amounts will not be included in the donor’s
income; no charitable deductions are allowed.
IRA transfers will count toward your “minimum distribution requirement”—meaning that a charitable gift
can reduce your taxes in 2007 if you haven’t yet
received a distribution.
IRA gifts may not exceed $100,000 and may be
made only in 2007. The “ceilings” on contribution
deductions (50% of adjusted gross income for
cash, 30% of AGI for long-term capital gain property) do not apply to IRA gifts.
Transfers can only be made to public charities such
as WXXI.
IRA gifts cannot be made to charitable remainder
trusts or other “life income gift” arrangements.

greatest cataclysm in history — a worldwide catastrophe that
touched the lives of every family on every street in every town in
America — and demonstrates that in extraordinary times, there
are no ordinary lives.
Six years in the making, this epic 15-hour film, reminiscent
in scope and power of Burns’s landmark series The Civil War,
focuses on the stories of citizens from four geographically
distributed American towns — Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile,
Alabama; Sacramento, California; and the tiny farming town of
Luverne, Minnesota. These four communities stand for — and
could represent — any town in the United States that went
through the war’s four devastating years. Individuals from each
community take the viewer through their own personal and
quite often harrowing journeys into war, painting vivid portraits
of how the war dramatically altered their lives, and those of
their neighbors, as well as the country they helped to save for
generations to come.
By focusing on the personal stories of ordinary Americans
who had extraordinary experiences, the film tries to bring one
of the biggest events in the history of the world down to a very
intimate scale. And in the end, we all begin to see that there are
no “ordinary lives.”
In addition to Keith David’s narration, The War features
first-person voices read by some of America’s greatest actors.
Tom Hanks reads the voice of Al McIntosh, the editor of the
Rock County Star-Herald in Luverne, Minnesota, whose weekly
columns poignantly tried to explain the unexplainable to his
neighbors. Other voices include Josh Lucas, Bobby Cannavale,
Samuel L. Jackson, Eli Wallach, Robert Wahlberg, Carolyn
McCormack, Adam Arkin and Kevin Conway.

to many diverse venues in the U.S., Canada, and
Ireland. On Sunday, September 23rd OnStage

band that combines a multitude of musical
styling and elements into a cohesive mixture of
swirling, infectiously danceable music.
