custom CUSTOM DESIGN Custom Design For the client who wants something exclusive, Roger Oates offers a bespoke service. All of our existing designs can be customised by using a choice of colours from our own palette. Designs can be woven to a wider width and re-scaled for unusually wide or narrow staircases and hallways. Newbury To brighten a client's classic wide mahogany staircase, Newbury was re-scaled and woven to a wider width. The colours of the stripes were exchanged to complement the decoration. Hurst To make a narrow staircase with several winders appear wider, Hurst was re-designed to create an asymmetric version with a double border on one side only. Tours A client wanted a flatweave runner but fell in love with one of our most successful Wilton designs so we re-designed and wove it as a flatweave. Archive We have an extensive archive of designs and colourways which are available to order. Ashby This smart neutral runner was re-scaled and given an injection of additional colours for this installation. Pink and mauve were specially dyed to match the client's decor. Custom and archive designs are subject to a minimum order quantity: Flatweave 20 linear metres, Wilton 30 linear metres. There is a finite amount of genuine Shetland wool – sheep are shorn yearly and an amount allocated to designers and weavers. This makes it a prized commodity that engenders traditional luxury and value. The majority of the wool is white with shades of both delicate light and deep greys, an almost-black tone and browns that hover between mink and tan. The wool is strong, yet soft and fine, and once woven is characterized by the beauty of lively natural tones. For the first time, the designer Roger Oates, known for his inimitable use of pure colour in Venetian Flatweave and textile design, is using un-dyed, natural Shetland wool to create a collection of Shetland Flatweaves. Sudbury Light Grey Shetland Wool Venetian Flatweaves by Roger Oates Henley Light Grey SHETLAND WOOL Shetland wool, like all pure wools, is a natural and sustainable fibre – a complex structure of oils, a high water and nitrogen content and a natural crimp provide many advantageous properties: • Inherent spring and robust resilience • Naturally spill and dirt resistant • Intrinsically fire retardant • Offers both sound insulation and warmth AT HOME This range of Shetland Flatweaves is truly British. Every part of the process from the wool to the weave is made in Britain and each runner is finished by hand in the Roger Oates studio in Herefordshire. SHETLAND LIMITED EDITION The first Roger Oates British wool range of classic flatweaves uses only pure Shetland wool in the six inherent natural colours that range from white to black. This is a perfect palette for Roger Oates as he always works with pure colour in order to achieve the intricate and graphic quality that defines his work. Un-dyed Shetland wool provides the right shades of ivory whites, dove greys, mink and ebony. The resulting flatweaves are serenely smart, embodying ‘naturalness’ that is clearly readable to the eye with a notable spring to the touch. You know you are looking at and walking on runners that by turns are traditional and modern. Roger Oates chose to re-work three iconic Venetian Flatweaves to produce this first Shetland Flatweave collection: • Hampton uses a dark grey base with further greys, mink and blacks to distinguish its herringbone design with bold striped edges • Henley is a light grey runner with a herringbone and rib stripe and contrasting border • Sudbury has been woven in both a light grey and mink colourway, which emphasises its natural multi stripe design Hampton Dark Grey Sudbury Moorit Sudbury Light Grey Henley Light Grey approx 70cm wide approx 60/70cm wide approx 60/70cm wide approx 60cm wide Sudbury Moorit London Showroom Roger Oates 1 Munro Terrace Riley Street London SW10 0DL Tel. 020 7351 2288 [email protected] Showroom/Head Office Roger Oates Eastnor, Ledbury Herefordshire HR8 1EL Tel. 01531 632718 [email protected] For worldwide distribution please visit our website: rogeroates.com Photography Christopher Cornwell Graphic Design Guy Warren Text Sarah Stewart-Smith All copyright, Design Rights and other intellectual property rights on our products remain the property of Fay Morgan Oates and Roger Oates. When Roger and Fay first discovered a nineteenth century flatweave fragment in the late 1980s, they set out to reintroduce and reinvent this flooring, woven in such a way as to be utterly authentic and true to the art of weaving, yet completely grounded in chic twenty-first century taste. Designs are originated and coloured by both Fay and Roger and the production process is run by craftsmen who finish by hand. Roger and Fay’s combined eye for colour mixed with practicality and their own standards of excellence, has taken a historic flatweave from being a relatively humble floor covering to being considered today’s must-have design staple for floors and stairs in this country and across Europe, Scandinavia, North America and Australia. Roger and Fay Oates work from their studio complex in Herefordshire and have a Chelsea showroom at 1 Munro Terrace, Riley Street, London SW10 0DL. Roger Oates London Showroom www.rogeroates.com 2 Roger Oates Eastnor Studio and Showroom 3 Halle Elephant (this page) is on the strict side of chic with its suiting style statement. The flexibility in the pure wool allows the stripes to be aligned on winders. 4 Halle Elephant The all-over herringbone stripe in Halle Vanilla (opposite) is in harmony with the plainness of Hanover which has an integral border in matching herringbone. 5 Halle & Hanover Vanilla 6 Hampton Terracotta Hampton Terracotta (opposite) is a strong design, as much at home with itself as it is when laid in conjunction with other natural floor coverings as shown here. Newbury Airforce Custom Colour Newbury (this page) is a fresh, clean Scandinavian look with hints of the seaside and holidays in the South of France. The landings have been hand mitred for a crisp finish. 7 New Hadley Bright Rose (this page) is fitted on the stairs in pretty contrast to New Hadley Mandarin, which has been laid along the hallway. It is an excellent example of the same weave working side-by-side in two distinct colours. 8 New Hadley Mandarin (landing), Bright Rose (stairs) Troy Strawberry (opposite) illustrates the bold, modern quality of the simplest of stripes, fitted in ‘overlay’ style on the quarter landings. The main landings are laid wall-to-wall in the custom ‘ground’ stripe with no border to keep the look simple and strong. 9 Troy Strawberry (stairs) Custom Troy Ground (landing) Ashby Raspberry 10 Lyon Ebony Ashby Raspberry (opposite) has been used to subtle effect on this contemporary oak staircase. All stripes are aligned as they trace round the winders due to the pliable nature of the pure wool weave. Lyon Ebony (this page) has been traditionally fitted in ‘overlay’ style whereby the runs of flatweave are laid perpendicular to, and over one another on the landings. This strong black stripe laid on a white-painted stair gives an impact which is entirely modern. 11 Chatham Multi Chatham Multi (this page and opposite) is as refreshingly modern as it is playfully traditional. Its colouring is pure Roger Oates. The Chatham Multi design is shown here as a fitted stair runner and as a simply hemmed rug. 12 Area Rugs 13 Chatham Multi (rug), Windsor Ebony (stairs) Neutral Flatweaves 14 Chatham China Blue Patchwork Rug (opposite) is an entirely bespoke, handmade piece that is a mix and match of any colours and designs of your choice. The beauty of Venetian Flatweave is as much about the quality of the look as it is about practicality and flexibility for any space. Individual widths can be sewn together imperceptibly to create large enough pieces that can be fitted wall-to-wall on landings (pictures 1, 2 and 7). A runner can be taken up and round landings with mitred joins (picture 3). Quarter and half landings can be fitted in the traditional manner in an overlay fashion, where one length of flatweave is laid perpendicular to the other (pictures 5 and 6). Intentionally ‘visible’ hand seaming can be a feature stripe within an otherwise subtly striped weave and add to the general flow and interest in the design (picture 4). 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 30 Frequently Asked Questions Which width of stair runner should I choose? We recommend that you have a minimum margin of 5cm either side of your runner and the edge of your staircase. I have winding steps. Can I still have a stair runner? A flatweave quality is recommended if you have winding steps as it is supple and flexible unlike a wilton. In the majority of cases where you have a minimum of three winding steps over a 90 degree turn the stripes can be matched in the crutch of the step if a flatweave is used. A good fitter is also required. How do I care for my runner? Vacuum regularly to remove surface dirt. If any spillages occur, act quickly. Blot the liquid with a soft, colourless absorbent cloth then dab with a clean cloth dampened with upholstery shampoo solution. Rinse and blot dry. Protective treatments such as Scotchgard can be applied after installation. How much will I need? 1.For straight steps, measure one riser and one tread to give the length needed for each step. Include the “nose” in the measurement (see pic a). Check that all treads and risers on your stairs have the same measurements. 2. Count steps and check for differing depths. 3.Multiply the number of steps x length needed for each step. If the steps all have different measurements, you will need to measure each one individually and add the measurements together. 4.To calculate the quantity needed for winding steps, measure the distance along the outside perimeter (see pic b). 5.Measure the final riser of the flight and also add an extra 50cm per flight to allow for tolerance. TREAD Can I request a sample? Yes. You can order samples online or please call one of our showrooms on 020 7351 2288 or 01531 632718. Cuttings are free of charge or larger samples are available for a refundable deposit. What happens on landing areas? There are various options available. Please see the gallery section opposite and on our website for ideas and inspiration. What kind of underlay and gripper should be used with my runner? A good quality rubber and felt underlay is always recommended for both flatweave and wilton installations. Pin gripper should be used with a wilton runner and Microplast gripper should be used with a flatweave runner. If you have a loose runner/rug on a hard floor we recommend that Anti-slip underlay is used to prevent slippage. Where is my nearest retailer? Please see the Retailer section on our website for more information or call 01531 632718 and we will be able to recommend somebody. I cannot find anything I like in your standard collection. We offer a bespoke design and colour service for minimum quantities. Please speak to a member of our sales team who can advise further. RISER NOSE a. What is the life expectancy of my stair runner? It is impossible to guarantee how long your stair runner will last as they wear very differently dependent on the individual household and layout of the staircase. Life expectancy is also affected by the quality of fitting and type of underlay used. A rubber crumb/ felt underlay similar in height to the gripper rod should always be used. To prolong the life, insist on a shoe-free policy and ensure the installation is completed to a high standard. b. I do not like my runner. Can I return it? We cannot accept returns on custom runners or stair rods. We also do not accept returns on pre-fabricated areas such as seamed wall to wall landings. Please consult our full Terms and Conditions of Business on the website for further information. Do I need stair rods? Stair rods are purely decorative however do add a nice finishing touch. Please see our stair rod section to view the different styles available. 31 Custom Design and Archive The Roger Oates archive forms a rich supply of both inspiration and expertise in Venetian Flatweave design.
