“Gather the fragments left
over, so that nothing will be
wasted.” John 6: 12.
One of the challenges we
face as Christians today is to
take the word of God that we
hear and read in our churches
and personal prayer time and
relate it to our daily lives that
we live thousands of years
after it had been written and
proclaimed.
The above verse may be
one of them. It is the command Jesus gave to his disciples just after he had taken
a few fish and a couple loaves
of bread and fed thousands.
Had you ever considered that
this may have been the first
advertisement for recycling,
sharing or not wasting?
In Jesus’s time there were
many poor, the same for
today. He was aware that the
poor struggled for food daily,
the same for today.
His
greatest desire was to provide
for the poor daily, both for
their physical and spiritual
welfare; is that not why in
the prayer he gave us that he
includes giving daily bread?
Since he would not physically
be with us very long he knew
that his body, us, would need
to perform the miracle of
feeding the poor. Could that
not be one of his messages to
us by the command to gather
the fragments? Isn’t he telling us that in order to feed
the hungry of the world that
it only takes a few fragment
from each of us?
So the next time we have
a meal and are scraping
up the leftovers, may it be
a reminder that those few
fragments would feed some
hungry family in our community or around the world.
May it also be a reminder for
us to give regularly a fragment of what we have to a
local food bank or food drive
at church or in our community.
If we all practiced giving
just a fragment of what we
have to the poor; we could
feed them all! Wouldn’t that
be a miracle!
