It has always been a beautiful place to live full of history and charm. I remember just a few years back finding out that Allouez gets it’s name from one of the early Jesuit Catholic Priest explorers, Father Allouez, a contemporary of Father Marquette. Our area is full of the memory of our Catholic Church and some of its earliest saintly evangelizers. ‘de Pere’ itself means ‘of the Fathers’, in French, and is a nod to all these early Jesuit explorers. Even Bonduel is named after Father Bonduel… and on and on. Allouez is also the home of our sister churches St. Matthew Parish and Resurrection Parish. Recently their two schools have linked into one school at two sites and have renamed their unified GRACE school “Father Allouez School”. What an awesome name choice full of local history and meaning. Tremendous. Fr. Claude-Jean Allouez, was born on June 6, 1622 in France and died on August 27/28, 1689, near Fort St. Joseph, New France. He was one of the early Jesuit missionaries to “New France” which includes our area here in northeast Wisconsin. A simple trip to Heritage Hill will share much of this with you. Encyclopedia Britannica notes that he has been called the founder of Catholicism in the West. He traveled much of our area in poverty, especially along the Fox River, offering the Holy Mass up near Oconto and elsewhere along the river and neighboring area, a full hundred years before our Nation was founded. The Church was here a long time with the Native Americans before the colonies moved west. These Jesuit missionaries did an amazing job sharing the truth of the gospels with the Native American people who were in need of the Gospel like all of us. The Jesuits were referred to as the ‘Black Robes’ in many parts of this hemisphere, due to their simple black cassocks. Fr. Allouez entered the Society of Jesus at Toulouse, France and was ordained priest in 1655. He sailed for Quebec (now Canada) in 1658. He was stationed at settlements along the St. Lawrence River until his appointment (1663) as vicar general of the Northwest. How’s that for an assignment? He travelled extensively through this territory, preaching to the Native Americans and establishing many missions—chiefly in our presentday Wisconsin, including Chequamegon Bay and Green Bay. His own accounts of his activities are frequently quoted in The Jesuit Relations, edited by R.G. Thwaites. This work is still available, Father Allouez was a predecessor and later a colleague of Jacques Marquette, (Marquette University) for whom he wrote a book of prayers in the Native American tongue. His last years were spent mostly among the Miamis of the St. Joseph River in modern southwestern Michigan. Our heritage is so rich here in Northeast Wisconsin. This new name will serve well to help awaken an interest in our heritage and a sense of evangelization for our future. Fr.
