REGISTRATION PERIOD AUGUST 15th - 26th CLASSES BEGIN SEPT 6th OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE OLLI AT UTEP El Paso’s Premier University-Based Learning and Social Program for Seniors We welcome you to OLLI, where curious minds gather. OLLI is a not-for-profit organization run by members, providing continuing education on the UTEP campus for those over age 50. Come for the intellectual stimulation; stay for the people. OLLI provides learning opportunities to enhance the quality of life and the health and wellbeing of adults. The OLLI experience allows older learners to be an integral part of the UTEP campus experience. The atmosphere at OLLI is relaxed and informal: sharing knowledge and ideas and forging friendships. No tests or pressure...just the sheer joy of learning. Choose from up to ten courses per week, most from 1:30 pm to 4:45 pm. Most classes are 90 minutes long, once a week for six weeks. Science, music, art, history, politics, exercise, language, literature. Pay one registration fee per semester, not per class. Monday 1:30 PM Begins: WAVE HANDS LIKE CLOUDS - MOVEMENTS AND MEDITATIONS FROM TAI CHI AND CHI GUNG I 9/12/2016 STEVE BAROWSKY The Class will learn and practice one of the most defining set of movements of both Tai Chi and Chi Gung. These movements amplify and circulate one's internal energy. The movements also benefit your internal organs and spine through the circulation of energy throughout your entire body and for unifying and coordinating the movements of your arms, legs and waist. In addition to the Wave Hands Like Clouds movements, we will practice Chi Gung meditations from Master KC Mao's ten methods of blanching energy. This class is appropriate for those who would like an introduction to Tai Chi, Chi Gung and the internal arts of China. It is also appropriate for those who have studied these arts previously and would like to explore them more deeply. 1:30 PM REPUJADO ROMY HAWKINS Metal embossing also known as repujado in Spanish, or repoussé in French, is an ancient art of manipulating soft metals using special hand tools to create unique works of art. New students learn the basic techniques in this art. A beginner kit will be available for $10 payable at the first class. Advanced students will review intermediate techniques before proceeding to advanced levels. Classes are bilingual. This is a 12 week class. Extra fee $30. Class size limit: 20 1:30 PM WASHINGTON, LINCOLN, FDR AND THE SHAPING OF A NATIONAL IDENTITY JIM SMITH Any historical ranking of U.S. presidents consistently places George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin Roosevelt at the top of the list. This class will explore the role those three presidents played in shaping American and national identity. The class will generally avoid the trivia of their personal lives and instead focus on their political vision, their actions as president, and their long term legacies for the American nation and the world. 3:15 PM FILM NOIR (SHADOWS AND LIGHT) CATHERINE DICKASON Join us for a brief visit back in film history to view and discuss some of the classics in Film Noir. We will explore the essential rules of film noir and screen movies such as "Double Indemnity", "White Heat", "Laura", and many others. We will get lost in the lingo of the time and meet Femme Fatales, gun-toting gangsters, and fast talking Private Eyes to take a look into the daring and entertaining corners of great American film. Bring your popcorn and have some fun! 3:15 PM GREAT ENGLISH AND AMERICAN NOVELS BRIAN YOTHERS This class will consist of discussions of six major English and American novels from the closing years of the eighteenth century through the early twentieth century, each taught by a tenured and tenure track faculty member in the department of English. Think of it as a series of six novels that participants will either have "always wanted to read" but haven't quite got around to reading or will have read in school years ago, and might enjoy revisiting. The mix of novels will be Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, The Scarlet Letter, Moby-Dick, Middlemarch, and A Farewell to Arms. Page 4 Tuesday 09:30 AM Begins: TAI CHI / CHI GUNG 9/6/2016 SIFU BETO BRISEŇO Experience increased vitality and radiant good health through exercises to improve physical and mental health. This ancient Chinese system of movement and breathing is especially appropriate for those in the second half of their lives as the nonaerobic exercises can increase flexibility, stamina, agility, and overall well-being. Newcomers are welcome. Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Tien Shan Tzi Ctr. 1629 Montana Ave. Extra fee $30.00. 01:30 PM MEDITATION AND THE POWER OF AWARENESS LYNN PROVENZANO Get focused, think clearly, and feel connected with your life. Learn the principles of meditation and learn techniques to improve your well-being and build mindfulness. Meditations will assist in finding stillness and personal insights. 01:30 PM WHERE DOES INFLAMATION BEGIN? CAUSES, SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENTS JACQUELINE CORDOVA The instructor, a certified health nutrition coach, will take students through a journey of understanding this little-discussed aspect of our health and its relation to what we eat. She will discuss the inflammatory diet, real food vs. fake food, contributing factors to inflammation and not feeling well, and the alternative anti-inflammatory diet. She will take a look at what’s in our refrigerators and cupboards, and make some suggestions to transitioning to a more healthy diet and even offer some special recipe demonstrations. 01:30 PM SPANISH GRAMMAR MARIA CARMEN HERNANDEZ This course targets the needs of intermediate and advanced Spanish learners. Students will practice indicative conjugation tenses (present, past, future, progressive, and perfect tense.) The class will write short paragraphs, and they will be able to express themselves comfortably. 01:30 PM WRITING YOUR MEMOIRS I NANCY NATALICIO Come share with fellow students the sweet and sour, funny and sad stories of the last five or six decades of your life (at least, those you can remember!) You'll have an appreciative audience, as well as the opportunity to get to know your OLLI classmates in a new way. All you need is a pen, paper and an open mind and heart. 03:15 PM INTRO TO ENERGY WORK - DISCOVER YOUR LIFE FORCE AND PRANIC HEALING LYNN PROVENZANO Discover your "life force". Learn to harness the healing power that exists in every human being. This course introduces you to "Prana", your bioplasmic energy body, the basic principles of self-healing with focus on pranic healing techniques to promote healing and wellness featured in the book, Your Hands Can Heal You, by Master Stephen Co. Prana is the body's natural life force and self-healing energy. Classes include basic tenets, practice sessions, exercises, and meditations. 03:15 PM CEMETERY RESEARCH FOR GENEALOGISTS AND GHOST HUNTERS! ANITA HOPKINS With over 120,000 known cemeteries in the United States, how do genealogists find and research the right one? How about the most haunted cemeteries? You’ll be surprised to learn about the different kinds of cemeteries which exist, why cemeteries are moved to different locations, how to find them, the seasons and events of cemeteries, and the lesser known cemetery technology useful to genealogists and ghost hunters. Page 5 Wednesday 01:30 PM Begins: THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN 9/7/2016 DR RICHARD ALBIN PhD This course will study and discuss who John was, his theology, when he wrote, and some of the differences between John and the Gospels according to Mark, Matthew, and Luke. John is highly spiritual and symbolic. For John, Jesus is the preexistent Word of God, the Logos, Son of God the Father. “All things came to be through him. “ (John 1:3). 01:30 PM JUSTICE AT WORK MARIE VIANNEY BILGRIEN I will share communities and individuals that work in social justice. One studies justice, but also does justice at a very practical level. Then the class members may share about communities and individuals that are doing justice in the El Paso Community and surrounding area. 01:30 PM SHAKESPEARE'S ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA GRACE HADDOX Discover one of Shakespeare's greatest couples, and one of his strongest tragic heroines, as we read the full text of Antony and Cleopatra and watch a film adaptation of the play. The class will be filled with lively discussions, historical contexts, and lyrical language. We will use the No Fear Shakespeare edition of the play. 03:15 PM CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY LARRY BARON Class will select from 32 different topics in Cultural Anthropology for lecture and discussion. See your portrait skills grow and learn the language of posing your subjects, including individuals and groups, children and pets. Improve your skills with the appropriate equipment, from lenses to lighting, backdrops to environment. Develop your signature style and get expert advice on how to capture authentic feeling in your shots and get feedback on your photographs every step of the way. 03:15 PM ART IN PARIS INCLUDING DAY TRIPS FROM PARIS KATHLEEN KEY This class will cover museums, churches and sights in Paris such as the Musee du Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, Centre Pompidou, Musee Orangerie, and more! We will look at the spectacular churches in Paris, including Notre Dame and Sacre Coeur as well as day trips to Chartres, Rouen, Amiens and Rheims. Of course, we will look at the Eiffel Tower and Sorbonne and Left Bank and numerous parks within the "City of Lights." Day trips from Paris to Giverny, Mont St Michel, Versailles, Fontainebleu, Lille, Chartres, Rouen, Amiens and Rheims. Learn where to go for coffee and of course, the best ice cream in Paris as well as where to hear live music! REGISTRATION BEGINS MONDAY, AUGUST 15, 1:30 - 4:30PM Page 6 Thursday 01:30 PM Begins: THE WORLD OF DON QUIXOTE 9/8/2016 ALBERT ASKENAZI This course explores the book of Don Quixote de la Mancha, and the life of Miguel de Cervantes, the author of the book. The basis of different points of view presented in this masterpiece of world literature will be examined, and you will discover many aspects, values, and teachings of this book. You will view many art pieces related to Don Quixote (paintings, figurines, sculptures, records, dvd's, and books ) from the instructor's famed and well known collection. 01:30 PM BHUTHAN AND THE LHAKHANG AT UTEP KAYE MULLINS The Lhakhang at UTEP, architecture, sculpture, and paintings. Bhutan culture, religion, and handcrafts. Class will include tours of the Lhakhang and the Centennial Plaza. 01:30 PM CLASSICAL ROMAN POETRY: WHERE IT ALL BEGAN DR. LAWRENCE JOHNSON PhD This brief survey of several popular poetic forms from the age of Augustus Caesar will explore the roots of the country/western genre in the pastoral poetry of the period (Virgil’s Georgics and Eclogues), what love poetry was like when it wasn’t taken seriously (in works from Catullus and the elegiac poets) and how satire has not changed all that much from the time of Horace and Juvenal to SNL. Our sampling will be small but provocative and illuminating…. 03:15 PM CINE MEXICANO ROMY CANCHE Dar a conocer a través del séptimo arte a los cineastas más emblemáticos de México así como de las películas que representan el Siglo de Oro y del cine actual en dicho país. Entre los cineastas que analizaremos están Luis Buñuel, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu, Alfonso Cuarón y Guillermo del Toro. El fin de analizar las películas es originar en los espectadores una crítica profunda en relación a los acontecimientos que se exponen en ellas. Por lo mismo las películas son referentes a temas que esbozan el contexto de México en diferentes facetas. Algunas que observaremos están: "Allá en el rancho grande", "los olvidados" etc. This class will be taught in Spanish. Participants should bring their own instruments. 03:15 PM THE RACIAL DIVIDE: FROM THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT TO BARACK OBAMA'S PRESIDENCY TED WILLIAMS Has the racial divide increased during the past 60 years? If so, why is this the case? From Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, The Black Panther Party, the Rioting in the 60's through President Nixon, President Reagan and the "Law and Order" Republicans. This will be viewed through the multiple lens of music, literature, television shows, movies, politics, sports, etc. DID YOU KNOW??? Instructor bios are available at our website olliatutep.org (click on the Faculty button) Page 7 Friday 09:00 AM Begins: LANDSCAPE OIL PAINTING 9/9/2016 ROSARIO PONTE “Learning how to paint is learning how to see.” Learn mixing of colors, determine color temperature and use composition and drawing. Some experience would be beneficial, but if beginners are ready for a challenge, they are also welcome. A list of supplies will be provided for this class. This is a two hour, 12 week class. Extra fee $35. Class limit 16. (If there are an additional 16 persons who wish to take the class, a second class will be added at 11:15 am on Fridays). 11:00 AM PAINTING ABSTRACTS AND NON-OBJECTIVES DAVINIA MIRAVAL This class will help you to create an Abstract Painting and Non-Objective Painting. Looking at influences like Jackson Pollock, Kandinsky, Mondrian and others you will enjoy the the application of paint and the process of painting without the pressure of rendering objects as they are, but as they feel. You will be painting the essence of the object and in this class, freedom is the key. This is a 12 week class. Class limit 16. Extra fee $30. 01:30 PM EASY VINYASA YOGA I PHYLLIS PRICE Vinyasa means moving with the breath. Yoga means union. Adapted to individual capabilities, you'll be practicing 5,000 year old yogic techniques (pranayama/breathing, pratyahara/meditation, and asanas/postures) proven to benefit the whole of us: body, mind, spirit. Your yoga practice will build focus, calmness, strength, flexibility, energy, lung capacity, and often delight. It works with all your body's systems to restore/maintain/increase balance, hence health. UTEP furnishes mats, or you may bring your own. Park in Lot P-9, across from Memorial Gym. 01:30 PM CONTROVERSIES IN SCIENCE ERIC KAPPUS How old is planet earth? Did we really evolve from monkeys? Is global warming real? Are commercial jets spraying mind-altering chemicals in the atmosphere? Did a big bang create everything? These topics are some examples of current scientific controversies we will discuss in this class. Students will learn how scientists know what they know, what science really is, and how to think critically about these issues. An optional field trip to the dinosaur tracks at Mt. Cristo Rey will be provided. 01:30 PM THE ART OF SPANISH/FLAMENCO DANCE RITA TRIANA A look at the history and traditions of Spanish Dance: Classical, Regional and Flamenco. Focus on Spanish composers and musical accompaniment such as guitar and castanets. She also sustained a decade long romance with Chopin. The film "Children of the Century" will delight as it was an official selection at the Cannes film Festival. FROM FRANCE TO RUSSIA with the History of "Nicholas and Alexandra", a fascinating look at the last, tragic Russian monarchs; the kindly, indecisive Czar Nicholas and his reclusive, fear-haunted Czarina. The story follows their problems from the onset through the introduction of Rasputin to the Russian Court, to the Czar's abdication and the family's execution at Ekaterinburg on July 16, 1918. Accompanied by the fantastic film production by the same name.
