Prayer for HSC Students
Today, let us especially pray for our young people as they begin the HSC.
God we ask that they especially feel your closeness during the HSC exam period.
Give all our students calm hearts and quiet confidence
in the knowledge that you hold them in the palm of your hand.
Bless them with keen understanding and retentive memory.
Give them the ability to grasp things correctly,
be exact in their explanations
And an ability to express themselves clearly.
Point out the beginning, direct their progress
and help in them in the completion of each of their responses.
Holy Spirit send them your gifts of wisdom and knowledge
We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Welcome Back to Term 4
Wow! What a busy start to the school term. The Staff are well relaxed after a well
deserved holiday full of cheer and greetings for our happy and engaged students.
The canteen is open and is in full swing, students in Kindergarten participating in
various rotation activities with the amazing assistance of parents, students shared
what they did in the holidays with their teachers. Dancing lessons commenced with
some groovy moves by our students and some teachers and science began with our
students in Years one, Two & Four and some challenging mythbuster activities by our
science teacher, Mrs Keenan. It was a real pleasure to see everyone back at school
and enjoying life to the max! Best wishes for a fabulous term. Want to see more

Principal’s Visit to Year Four
This week I had the pleasure of beginning the school day with Mrs Clarke’s
charges in Year Four. As a Catholic School, we all believe that through
prayer we not only communicate with our God
but developing a spiritual relationship with
God. This belief is deeply entrenched in the
Catholic Church’s long tradition of prayer. As I
sat in reverence with the Year Four students,
lighting candles and so forth, the students
began their daily ritual of circle prayer.
Students one by one, said a prayer followed by
“Lord Hear Us” and then recited by the class
“Lord Hear Our Prayer.” At the conclusion of
the prayer, Mrs Clarke read a reading from the
Gospel. As Mrs Clarke spoke about the Gospel, the students confidently made links to their
everyday lives. Thank You Year Four and Mrs Clarke for being an integral part of the Church community in which families
worship and grow together. Now that is the spirit of Prayer!
A Baby Boy –For Mr and Mrs David Dunbar
Congratulations to Sarah and Dave Dunbar on the birth of
their baby Boy on Saturday the 11th of October. On behalf
of all the school community and Griffith, congratulations! If
the sun shines for another thousand years, it could never
outshine the warmth and ecstatic joy we all feel for you
both Sarah and Dave for the birth of your son Archie Martin
Dunbar. With buckets of love and joy from St Patrick’s and
Griffith!
Sarah has included a message below
The AJ Family having a quick nurse of Archie
Dunbar on Sunday afternoon.
Thank you for all the thoughts and well wishes. Archie Martin Dunbar came into the world on the 11.10.14 making his grand
entrance at a weight of 8 pound 9 ounces. He has a great set of lungs on him and could even have a touch of ginger! Can't wait
for you all to meet our little Dave junior. Sarah and Dave
More Special Celebrations for our Amazing Staff & Welcome New Staff
A special birthday was celebrated on the pupil free day with Mrs Grant reaching a significant
milestone over the holidays. The staff ensured that Kathy’s day was all go from the beginning
to the end, with birthday cake and lots of joyful singing. On behalf of all the school
community, happy birthday! Congratulations also to Caterina and Joe Catanzariti on your
wedding anniversary from all the St Patrick's and Griffith Community. May God bless you and
continue his everlasting love for you. You are truly a beautiful and amazing couple who always
"give” and support people from all over Griffith. You are such an honour to know and love.
Congratulations! As the term begins, we welcome new staff to St Patrick’s who commenced
last week. Mrs Clarke is teaching Year Four, Ms Page is teaching in Kindergarten and Mrs
Christine Culla is our new Senior School Support Officer.

Congratulations Rob Kelly
Earlier in the Year Bishop Hanna requested invitations from the Diocesan Community for
membership of the Advisory Council for Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Wagga Wagga. On
behalf of the school community, I wish to acknowledge and congratulate Mr Rob Kelly on the
appointment to the Advisory Council. Rob and other members from around the Diocese will
engage in discussions, provide advice and recommend to the Bishop of Wagga Wagga, through
the Director of Schools, broad educational policies and priorities which pertain to the system of
schools in the Diocese of Wagga Wagga. The major function of the proposed Wagga Wagga
Schools' Advisory Council will be governance of the Catholic School system. The two major areas
of stewardship and accountability of the council are to assess and monitor outcomes of ongoing
enhancement of the quality of Religious Education of systemic schools, and to assess and
monitor the overall quality of schools, and to assess monitor the overall quality of schools - including resources and school
administration. The council will be tasked with a range of responsibilities including reviewing the long term strategic direction of
schools, Catholic identity, monitoring governance structures and provision of infrastructure. I am very excited that the MIA has a
representative on the Advisory Council and I look forward to engaging future policies that will improve outcomes for all Catholic
Schools across the Diocese. Well done Rob!
An Engagement!
During the holidays Nancy Cirillo announced her engagement to
Rasit, an airline pilot for Rex Airlines. All the staff could not help
but notice glowing smiles radiating from Nancy but also the
huge sparkling diamond ring on her finger. The circle of white
gold is very significant in that the ring represents eternity,
renewal and wholeness that is very obvious for the love they
have for each other. Rasit, we all look forward to sharing an
engagement cake at school this Thursday! Congratulations to
you both!
Classroom Connections
Wow what a busy start to the term! We welcomed our new
families and staff back to school. Students wasted no time
engaging with ipads to share their holiday stories. Parents came
into the classrooms assisting the teachers, Staff celebrated
birthdays and a 50th year golden wedding anniversary and some
students shared their jokes. Now that is the spirit of laughing
out loud!
Class Allocations for 2015
This week teachers will begin the process of class structures for
2015. Usually, student placements are not up for negotiation
however, if you have any valid educational reason for a request,
this should be done in writing and addressed to the Principal
and or the Assistant Principal by no later than October 24th. The
request will be acknowledged, listened to and discussed with
the appropriate personnel; however, no promises are made that
it will be acted upon. The local knowledge of the school staff will
take precedence in determining what is the very best for the students at St
Patrick’s. Placement of children in classes will always be done considering the
following:
 Class size
 Academic ability
 Even gender mix
 Friendship groups
 Sibling divisions
 Behavioural needs
 Previous grade history
 Specific learning needs
Finally, I ask that parents not approach staff seeking information about classes for
2015, as it can be embarrassing for all concerned. This process is part of our
professional inherent responsibility as teachers and is one that needs to be treated
with trust. Thank you for your cooperation with this process.

Placement of Students who Receive Funding
Our process for students who receive funding will be slightly different this year. Later in November, once the class lists and
staffing is finalised, parents will be invited to attend a confidential transition program. This program aims to ensures parents and
teachers together are aware of the particular needs and a smooth transition occurs for the following academic year. This new
transition program only applies to students who receive funding for educational assistance and is part of our commitment to
ensure a smooth transition for 2015. We believe it is vital to student achievement that our partnership between the home and
school is open and supportive for all involved. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to come in and talk with me.
October P&F Meeting
Last Thursday night the P&F met to discuss the achievements of their goals for 2014. Earlier in the year the P&F highlighted their

support for our art show which raised a total of $16, 679.25. This was all possible due to the dedication and commitment from
our parent and wider community. On behalf of all the students and staff a sincere and heartfelt thanks!

We are now accepting enrolments from Year One through to Year Six. Parents, if you know of families who are moving to Griffith
or who are considering an enrolment in a Catholic school, please direct them to the school office on 6964 2888 for an
information package. Our school website and Facebook page are an
excellent referral in order to gain an understanding of our Catholicity,
education and sporting achievements, resources, facilities and grounds.

are now only limited spaces in certain year levels. Make an enquiry
today!
Pupil free Day Term 4 –Australian Mathematics and Science.
The first day of term four, our staff gathered together to work on the Australian
Curriculum Mathematics and Science. Under the professional guidance and
expertise of Ms Carrie Spokes, Mr Peter Moraschi and Mrs Bernadette Gibson
from the Catholic Schools Office, the staff worked tirelessly throughout the day.
With support from the Catholic Schools Office, our teachers this term will have
additional time out of the classroom to work on the scope and sequence in
readiness for 2015. On behalf of the staff, I wish to acknowledge my heartfelt
thanks to Ms Spokes and Mr Moraschi and the valuable resources from Catholic
Schools Office to ensure the smooth transition of the Australian Curriculum for
not only St Patrick’s but all Catholic Schools across the Diocese. Now that is the
spirit of learning!

From our Assistant Principal
Welcome back to Term Four
There is much ado and much to share this Term. My consistently stated goals for us as a community is to continue to provide
opportunities for Parental Engagement in their child’s learning, and for opportunities for students to share their learning. My
hope is that through the newsletter articles and practical opportunities that this goal has been realised for you for you so far this
year all to further your engagement in learning and to continue that this term.
In Term Two, I outlined what I considered to be the major issues in education today.
I wrote that I believe there is an urgency to focus on.
· Maximising each learner’s potential.
· A Catholic Education in a 21st Century World.
· Building and fostering of relationships
· The need to encourage and foster creativity.
· Student engagement in their learning – purposeful –understanding why
they are doing what they are doing
· Increased Parental engagement in learning.
· A focus on social justice
· Reflective Practice for Teachers – why and how am I teaching this?
· Goal setting.
A lot to consider I know. However, the more I walk through and continue to weave with the teachers and students in our school
here at St. Patrick’s, the more evidence I see that these issues are being talked about and explored in our classrooms. Powerful
stuff indeed.
Parental engagement
More than ever parents are turning to schools for advice, information and direction about how
to raise their kids. Yet their issues are increasingly complex, demanding specific advice. At St.
Patrick’s we seek to provide assistance often and share our experiences and information to help
you. Attached to this newsletter is an article by Michael Grose featuring Seven ideas to help men
build better relationships with their children.
2015 Kindergarten Orientation
This term we will be welcoming our 2015 Kindergarten students as they continue their transition
to Primary School. This Transition Program is aimed at having fun, with hands on activities promoting a learning and stimulating
environment, giving our 2015 Kindergarten students an opportunity to interact with one another under the careful supervision
and leadership of one of our Kindergarten Teachers and a Teacher’s Aide. Our current Kindergarten students will continue their
learning program as per their normal routine with one of our regular casual teachers leading the learning.
This year, there will be three groupings for Orientation Days with each group completing 2 sessions. Below are the dates for the

Parent Responsibility – School Attendance
A parent of a child of compulsory school age is obliged to ensure that their child
attends school on every school day for the educational program in which he/she is
enrolled. Parents are liable to be prosecuted if they fail in their duty. Nonattendance alone is not generally used as grounds for prosecution; however, it may
figure as part of a larger pattern of child neglect. While all children must attend
school, the law does not demand that they actively participate. Education therefore
remains as much a matter of persuasion as of legislation. There may be times where a school determines the duration and
location of a student's educational program e.g. school based apprenticeship, work experience, representative sporting
obligation etc. Any time during which a student is not attending or participating in their educational program is considered an
absence and requires explanation. From time to time a student might be absent from school. Parents comply with their
compulsory schooling or compulsory participation obligation by providing a satisfactory reason for these absences. A decision is
made about whether a reason offered to explain an absence is satisfactory. A reason will be considered satisfactory if it
identifies the absence as an allowed absence.
Examples of allowed absences may be:
o The student is ill, injured or carrying an infectious disease medical or dental treatments or procedures
o specialised training
o sporting events other than those associated with the school or the education system
o funerals
o cultural reasons, or
o family reasons (e.g. special family events, holidays)
Parents should notify the school in writing if their child is absent for these reasons.
Examples of non satisfactory explanation include, children being kept home to care for sick
relatives or younger children, or because they are needed to help with housework or a family
business. Further information regarding school attendance can be obtained from the
following websites Policy, information and brochures:
http://www.cecnsw.catholic.edu.au/dbpage.php?pg=view&dbase=programs&id=47
The school leaving age: http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/leavingschool/index.php Thank you
for your support in this important reminder, as parents and staff at St Patrick’s we continue the journey to make a difference.
Virtue of Caring
Without caring, nothing and no
one matters. If someone is hurt or
sick, no one will help them. When
people have an “I don’t care”
attitude, they do a sloppy or
incomplete job. Things break and
people are hurt. Fortunately, at St.
Patrick’s we are teaching that
Caring people help others feel less
alone. Because they care, others
trust them. Caring makes the world
a better place. At St. Patrick’s we
recognize that you care for others
when you show love and concern
by doing kind things for them. Ask
them how they are and what they
think. When they are sad, ask,
“How can I help?” You handle
things with control and gentleness.
You give your best to everything
you do. When you take care of
yourself, you treat your body with
respect. You keep yourself clean
and healthy. You take care of your needs.
Principal Away in Term Four
Throughout Term Four, David will be away attending to meetings in Wagga Wagga. The community are informed of these dates
in the school calendar located on the school website under the button, “What’s On” and in the newsletter. Whilst David attends
meetings, I will be Acting Principal or a nominated member of the Executive.
Maintain & share your awesomeness,
Alan Wedesweiler, Assistant Principal

From our Religious Education Coordinator
Welcome back everyone to Term Four. Being October, this is the month of the Rosary. The Rosary is a very
powerful prayer and Mary, over the years, has appeared to several people especially in times of world
unrest and asked them to say the Rosary. Currently world peace is being threatened again. Maybe as a
family, you could choose one mystery of the Rosary, like the Joyful mysteries, and say one decade per week
for the month of October. Every prayer counts and who could not listen to the voice of our precious
children. During October most classes focus on the Missions in Religion and ways we can help others less
fortunate than ourselves. We will participate in “Socktober” which is an initiative of Catholic Mission. The students will be given
th
the opportunity to wear “interesting and colourful” socks for “Crazy Sock Day” on Thursday, 30 October, with their sports
uniform for a gold coin donation to assist children in Jamaica. As a family if you would like some more information about
Catholic missions campaign visit: catholicmission.org.au/wmm2014.
As the HSC begun on Monday please say a prayer and keep in your thoughts all the students who are completing
these exams.
Take care & Regards

From our Parish
Dear Friends,
Last week, legendary coach and AFL player Kevin Sheedy and renowned journalist Geraldine Doogue launched the Australian
Catholic Bishops Social Justice Statement at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. The title of the statement is A Crown for Australia:
Striving for the best in our sporting nation. The Statement highlights the vital role that sport plays in the health of individuals,
the life of communities and the inclusion of all in Australian society. Bishop Christopher Saunders, Chairman of the Australian
Catholic Social Justice Council, said; “Australians are passionate about their sport, whether as participants or as supporters,
whether following the fortunes of their local club or their national team. Sport brings us together, builds communities and lets
us celebrate the joy of movement and skill. Good sport makes everyone a winner. “Sport also holds a mirror up to our society. It
reflects the best in us as individuals and as a nation – but it can also reflect the worst in us. We are becoming too familiar with
violence and abuse of drugs and alcohol, both on the field and off it, on the part of players and of spectators. "Instances of illegal
betting and corruption across different codes pose a real threat to the integrity of sport and its capacity to build community.
Discrimination and exclusion undermine a key attribute of sport to build bridges across social divides and show a special concern
for people who are marginalised,” Bishop
Saunders said. In the Statement, A Crown for
Australia, the Catholic Bishops highlight the
transformative power of sport and call on all
levels of society to treasure and safeguard sport
from those forces that undermine its integrity.
Personally, I was thrilled to hear that my twin
nephews came first and second in the Mary
Mount College Athletic Championships. In their
College Newsletter they attributed their win to
the prayer support from their devoted
grandparents. St Paul used a sporting analogy to
describe the importance of keeping our faith
alive; he said, “we must keep running the race to
win the wreath that will never wither”.
I hope you have a blessed fourth term.
God Bless,
Fr Grace, Parish Priest

Diocesan Basketball, Tennis, Cricket and Softball Trials
Diocesan Sports Trials for Basketball, Tennis, Cricket and Softball for boys and
girls for 2015 will be held this term. The reason we hold them at this time is
because the MacKillop Trials are later this term or early in term one 2014 we
need to be organised to have our Diocesan Trials started or completed this
year. The students who can attend the Diocesan Trial would more than likely
be in Year Five in 2014 and should be playing in a local competition to a high standard. Year Six students in 2014 are not eligible
as they will be in high school next year. Diocesan Trials are not “come and try” days.

in a Combined Children’s choir to perform at the
Griffith Carols by Candlelight in front of between
3000-4000 people!
This is a wonderful opportunity for our Students to
perform in front of a large audience with a live band, dancers and singers. It is also a wonderful
opportunity for our school community to come together to celebrate Christmas.
WHEN: SUNDAY 14TH DECEMBER WHERE: EXIES NO2 SPORTS OVAL
TIME: 6:15pm to get a seat, 7:15 gather at side of stage, 7.30 on stage.
WHAT IS INVOLVED:




The choir will practice with Miss Cirillo and Mrs Close at school with Glee Club.
On the Sunday they will need to wear denim bottoms (shorts, skirt or jeans) and a
Christmas coloured top (Christmas theme, red, white or green)
The children will be singing between 7.30 - 8.30pm. Sunset is at 8.20pm.
After the children have finished singing and come off stage, it is difficult to “keep an eye” on
70 -80 excited kids in a crowd, in growing darkness.
Please come to the stage to “pick them up” or organise a meeting point inside the Oval with
them, so we can all be sure of their safety.
Please return a signed permission note to St Pat’s office whether or not you will be attending –
this helps choir teachers, and organisers (ensuring the right amount of space on stage).
