GARTH MITCHELL Assistant Coach
The newest MJHL franchise is thrilled that Mitchell will be joining their coaching
staff. Mitchell began his coaching career in 1981 and most recently was the head
coach for the AAA Midget Yellowhead Chiefs. Some of Mitchell’s coaching highlights
include coaching AAA midget hockey for 10 seasons and winning the League
Championship in 1994. Mitchell has been a regional scout for the Brandon Wheat
Kings since 1998 and served three years on the Team West coaching staff. During
this time he served as head coach at the 17 and under world championships. Hailing
from Elkhorn, Mitchell will add to the local flare the Oil Capitals are striving for in
their roster.
CHAD LESLIE Assistant Coach & Director of Player Personnel
The Virden Oil Capitals assistant coach and director of player personnel hails from
Elkhorn Manitoba and with his combined player & coaching experience we couldn’t
be more thrilled with this addition to our team. Chad’s hockey career got underway
during his 1993/94 seasons with the Yellowhead Chiefs. He proudly remembers the
Manitoba Championship his team took home in 1993. From 1995 to 1998 Chad
played in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and finished his SJHL career in
Estevan as an all-star in the 1998 season. The Brandon University Bobcats welcomed
him in 1999 and in 2001 he traveled south to Louisiana to play with the Lake
Charles Ice Pirates in the Western Professional Hockey League. Upon completing his
professional hockey career Chad moved to Estevan to work in the Oil industry where he was also able to accept the position as
assistant coach for the Estevan Bruins from 2009 to 2010. On short notice in 2011 Chad filled an in-term position as Head Coach and
General Manager for the Bruins. Chad is looking forward to the Virden Oil Capitals Inaugural Season and being a part of a quality
Junior ‘A’ franchise.
JILLIAN COCKBILL Marketing Manager
Jillian brings to the team an extensive background in marketing and community
involvement. After completing her Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University
of Victoria, Jillian returned to Virden to work as director of Marketing & Operations in
the hospitality industry. Jillian demonstrates a passion for her community through
her volunteerism and career endeavors. Jillian is excited to be part of the newest
MJHL franchise and this exciting time for sports entertainment in Westman!

2012 - 2013
Every new hockey season that is planned unveils its own unique
and interesting highlights. Over the most recent off season,
some franchise changes occurred that will undoubtedly breathe
wonderful energy and excitement into the life of the Manitoba
Junior Hockey League.
Virden Hockey Ventures Inc purchased the Winnipeg Saints
franchise from the Saints ownership group and re-located it to
Virden in late April 2012. With a new arena facility and excitement
at a fever pitch the southwest corner of Manitoba will be a key
area of focus for the MJHL this year as the Oil Capitals make
their mark. In Steinbach, a group of local owners purchased the
Pistons franchise from the former owner, Mr. Sonnenberg. Since the acquisition the community has rallied substantially behind the
new local owners. Optimism, support and commitment appear to be the main focus now in Steinbach and this is how it should be.
Much attention has been paid to player safety and that will certainly continue in the MJHL this season. The success of the Junior A
Supplement has been demonstrated over the past two seasons and the implementation of this set of guidelines has been renewed
for an additional two seasons.
The MJHL is proud to bring its exciting and passionate product to an even broader part of the province. The MJHL plans to broaden
its web-streaming service this year by having all clubs offer their games via pay per view by visiting the MJHL website.
The players in the League play for the chance of future higher level opportunities. The team owners operate to generate pride and
to establish a strong tradition within their club. The volunteers support the club to instill energy into the community. The fans and
corporate partners provide much needed revenue and moral support to the worthwhile work of the League.
On behalf of the member clubs I appreciate all members of the MJHL Community and hope all of you enjoy the 2012 – 2013 hockey
season with us.

OIL CAPS CROP CLUB
A unique and multi faceted opportunity to showcase your organization and your
agricultural product innovations all summer long in the field and year around in the
multiplex in the agriculturally designated “Soil Zone”.
The goal of the “Oil Caps Crop Club” is to work with leading edge organizations to
showcase your new products at the field level by growing a high yielding, high
quality crop annually. This partnership with the “Oil Capitals” will create an aggressive
branding and growth strategy for the south western Manitoba and south eastern
Saskatchewan area and beyond.
We expect in the field - full field signage, summer tours, media involvement and hockey team involvement at harvest, product
demonstrations, yield mapping, head to heads and showcasing of technologies to come. All backed by a solid agronomy package
with efforts to produce top end yields to bring maximum exposure to our Agricultural marketing partners.
Your input will be in the form of product or equipment which creates an
economical option to brand awareness, and we will strive to do more than hang a
company logo. The “Soil Zone” will be a designated agricultural zone in the arena
where we will tell the stories of the companies and products that we work with
in the field through the summer. A story board will be created on our cropping
process, products used, values generated and expected benefits to area growers.
We will offer a continuous slide presentation/short videos on our “Oil Caps Crop
Club” Partners products and innovations that we worked with at the field level the
previous summer.
Company logos and product logos will dawn the walls and tables in the “Soil Zone”.
Every year a new partner will be chosen for the naming rights to the “Soil Zone” basis
the level or intensity of product support for that year’s crop. Our goal will be to make
this a showcase field every year and to be the envy of the Agricultural Community.

agriculture with a passion to produce more bushels and better quality product. Your

Virden Oil Capitals Hockey presents Red Seal Chef, Erika Frauenlob, and Amaryllis Eatery
“Inspired By Energy” is quickly becoming the theme for the MJHL’s newest franchise, the Virden
Oil Capitals. It is also the foundation from which the Oil Caps have ventured down an unfamiliar
path in their inaugural season – the entry into the eatery and catering business.
Now, many would ask why or how would this group from Virden ever consider getting into
the eatery business when their main drivers should be all about hockey? Well, the fact of the
matter is – it wasn’t in their original plans. However, it is quickly becoming an integral part of
the franchise.
Most people in the hockey world know that operating a Junior A team in western Canada is not
easy financially. The simple math is, if you’re frugal and spend wisely, breaking even year in and
year out is a huge success. The Oil Caps knew this going in, and have been doing everything
possible to create an environment and a long-term template that is all about the experience.
Hockey and community spirit are the foundation – and a positive, fun atmosphere brings people
back. Things like Game Day Sponsors, intermission activities for the kids, and the “Soil Zone” to
pay tribute to our agricultural friends all add to the atmosphere of an Oil Caps hockey game. But is this enough? The answer to that
question is – maybe, maybe not?

Enter AMARYLLIS EATERY. Who, why, how? As the summer progressed, and the Oil Caps Board scrambled to put the pieces together
to get ready for their upcoming home opener, one key component remained vacant in the arena itself – a canteen manager. The
Town had tried, to no avail; they could not find anyone who would take on the task. Labour is not easy to find in Virden. And, as time
progressed, the Oil Caps were in a predicament: They had a new Junior A team coming to town, but were running the risk of not
having a food service to serve the crowds. Then, the Oil Caps Board decided to take a run at the challenge. Why not? If it could add to
the experience of an Oil Caps game, add to the community, help the town out and, at the same time, bring even more exposure to
this amazing facility, it would be worth the effort. They came to an agreement with the Town and vowed to find a suitable candidate.
After several meetings and many conversations, the hunt to find a prime candidate was not looking good, until word got out about
an individual – who was also a “Red Seal Chef” by trade – who had always thought about running her own eatery and setting up a
high-end catering business. This was her dream – but what she didn’t have was the capital to get started or the facility from which
to run it.
Interesting? Could the Oil Caps Board take this and make it real? Could they hire a Red Seal Chef and help her realize her dream,
while, at the same time, provide an even better experience for our fan base and the community as a whole? You bet!

The VIRDEN OIL CAPITALS HOCKEY CLUB’S mission
is to build a team of players whose talent and work ethic
is matched, if not exceeded, by their CHARACTER. An
integral part of this character is the commitment of our
team, coaches, management and Board of Directors to
give back and be involved in the community and
surrounding area. The Virden Oil Capitals Foundation
has been established to support those communities that
support us each and every day.
The undertaking of the Foundation will be to focus on
YOUTH EDUCATION, CITIZENSHIP, SPORT,
RECREATION AND HEALTHY LIVING. We are also
