In February, Marty & Brita Goldsmith, Jimmie Mitchell, Chuck Weaver and I visited the Children’s Dental Health Clinic in Long Beach where we presented them with our club’s annual fundraising check. GPX would like to thank you all for your contributions over the past year. Please see Jimmie Mitchell’s article in this issue. Our Breakfast Club, at Glory Days Beachside Grill in Seal Beach, continues to be a strong event every month. It gives us all a chance to get together, enjoy breakfast with our friends, and view all the beautiful Porsches displayed in the parking lot. We also have a terrific selection of GPX items and apparel in our fantastic Goodie Store. Please join us on the first Saturday of each month. I’ve been asked to repeat this request again. The ownership of the restaurant has requested that we please park anywhere adjacent to the restaurant or in the middle row of the parking lot, and not in front of any of the other buildings so that those business have some parking spaces. We are looking forward to attending the Mullin Automotive Museum on February 27. We have joined with the Santa Barbara Region for this special tour. Full coverage and pictures will appear in a future issue of the Circuit. The 3 days of the Festival will include PCA Club Racing, Time Trials, & Track Tours. We’ll also have a Vendor Row and Food Court with more LA food trucks this year. There will be Porsche Corrals and a Porsche Swap Meet with much of the fun being on Saturday and Sunday. There will be track tours on Friday. This year there will also be a Porsche Timeline of 911 Turbos and, just announced, the BMW club will be doing a Sunday Teen Street Survival Course. One of the greatest aspects of this event is that, like all our club events, it is put on by a dedicated team of volunteers. We are always in need of more volunteers for the Festival and this is my recruiting drive. This is a fun event for participants and volunteers alike. All volunteers get free parking and a gift. The Zone will share a percentage of the Festival profits with the regions based on the level of volunteerism from each region. So, when you volunteer as a Grand Prix member, you are not only helping out with the Festival, but also helping provide funding for Grand Prix events throughout the year. It would be great to get many GPX members out to the festival this year volunteering their time. We have more events in March including our Day Away from Work at Streets of Willow on March 14, and our 3rd Annual Santa Monica Mountains Fun Run to Paradise Cove on March 19. We will also have a Hospitality Tent at the All Porsche Swap Meet at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim on March 6, the day after our monthly breakfast and Board meeting. Registration for our events can be found at pcagpx. motorsportreg.com THE FESTIVAL NEEDS TRAFFIC CONTROL VOLUNTEERS! PLEASE STEP UP AND HELP OUT ON FRIDAY AM AND PM, SATURDAY AFTERNOON, AND SUNDAY AM AND PM SHIFTS In April, we are planning an overnight trip to Borrego Springs. More information on that soon. To volunteer contact Janice Witteried at jwitteried@hotmail. com or [email protected] Coming up in April, I’m excited to be part of the California Festival of Speed which is “The Largest Porsche Event in the Southwest.” This is my 4th year in a row and I am really looking forward to this Zone 8 event. This year the Festival runs April 8 – 10 and PCA is looking forward to welcoming POC back to the Festival. As always we look forward to seeing you around the region. 6 THE FESTIVAL OF SPEED IS FUELED BY VOLUNTEERS PLEASE COME OUT AND HELP SUPPORT THIS GREAT EVENT! “Fly low and avoid the radar” Jeff The heading above says "Porsche provides the cars, we provide the fun!" As a fairly new participant in the Club, I find I'm not always aware of what PCA has to offer. I figure I'm not unique in that way, so I asked Past President Suesan to write about Parade. I know she and Skip have attended many, so the event must be special. Here's what she had to say: "The Big Annual PCA Convention known as 'Parade' is fast approaching and, with its extreme popularity, if you blinked you may have already missed your opportunity to attend this year. The place is the extremely picturesque Jay Peak, Vermont, just south of the Canadian border and it is being held at the end of June. There are many reasons for the popularity of Parade. They include the opportunity to go somewhere just because the venue captured the attention of the Porsche Club of America for our Big Event. Parade is also an opportunity to hang around with hundreds of people who share a love of the same Porsche brand that you love. It is an opportunity to meet someone who wants to spend half an hour talking about an amazingly gorgeous specialty color that Porsche made only one year, in the second part of one year, and only for one run of a particular model. Parade is an opportunity to meet two types of concours people. One is those who love to prepare their cars and schlep them half way across the country (or all the way across the country) to compete. The other are people who wouldn’t clean a wheel rim but who wouldn’t miss a Parade Concours d’Elegance EVER. On display are breath-takingly spectacular cars and cars of historical significance owned by some of the 116,000 PCA members. They all will be judged on the lawn at Parade at what is sure to be a most beautiful event. Parade is an opportunity to sit at dinner with your best pals or cast fate to the wind and sit with complete strangers. You might end up meeting new best friends or just people that you run into every year from then on. At Parade you can stop in the lobby and catch up for a couple minutes with smiles and hugs for all your old acquaintances. After the concours is over Parade is an opportunity to celebrate the winners from the other three competitive events: the autocross, rally, and technical quiz. The National Newsletter and Website awards as well as the Region and Family of the Year awards are announced and bestowed at Parade. Parade is banquets and eating out with friends, dining on local fare searched on Yelp, and Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. Parade is meeting up in the morning before heading out the door for a tour or off to a volunteer job. Volunteers work at the Goodie Store, the Information Booth, deliver water or set up for the evening festivities. You can spend time at the autocross cheering on the competitors or be a competitor. But first the day should start with running into Hospitality to toast a bagel and grab a cup of coffee. Hospitality is where you will come back to maybe check your email at the Internet Café and definitely to say 'Hi' to vendors and see what is new in the world. They have great stuff to look at along with the static display of Porsches in the room. In the afternoon popcorn is available for munching. And other than all the above and staying in wonderful hotels, Parade is a great opportunity to go on the adventures the Parade team of volunteers have worked for months to plan. There are museum tours and the stunningly beautiful scenic tours. When I say 'museum' I mean like Bruce continued on pg 11 On The Cover... Grand Prix Region organized a tour to Ft. Irwin, home of the National TrainTHE ing Center. Troops PCA-GPX memorialize their attendance by painting insignias on the desert rocks outside the main gate. Boyd Krueger took this photo of his 2003 911 Turbo Coupe and some of those "Painted Rocks." Looks like the group had a great time! Read about it in this issue. Circuit March 2016 A publication of the Grand Prix Region of the Porsche Club of America 7 Fire from simulated hostile action "Local" street peddlers The Ft. Irwin Tour January 16th, 40 members of the Grand Prix Region took a tour of the US Army's Fort Irwin, about an hour's drive northeast of San Bernardino. There you will find the National Training Center, or NTC, at which U.S. troops, from all the services, spend a twenty-one day rotation before they deploy overseas. accompanied by the Garrison Commander, his Command Sergeant Major and Army wives. They briefed us on the purpose of the NTC and described life on deployment, as well as, at home. The training "Box" (as in "Sandbox") covers over 1000 square miles. Included are 13 villages and live fire ranges. We started our event by gathering at the Painted Rocks located just outside the gate. Outgoing troops memorialize their time at Fort Irwin by painting unit insignias on the desert scrabble. After checking in at the Main Gate, we assembled at the Post Exchange parking lot where we organized a Porsche car show for the troops. Then we boarded a bus to begin our tour of the base. Walking through a village we met many Arabic speaking re-enactors that can be friendly or hostile depending on the training scenario. We were able to watch a pyrotechnics demonstration simulating mortars, rocket propelled grenades and improvised explosive devices. The training is as realistic as possible based on the lessons learned in the field. Following the explosions was a demonstration of four weapons from an M-16 up to a .50 caliber heavy machine gun. Operating the .50 caliber was a thrill even though we were only firing blanks! After being targeted by IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) while riding in the bus we met with the Operations Officer, Omar Menchavez firing an M240B Machine Gun Firing an M2 50 cal. Machine Gun During training the firing is simulated by lasers with detectors on troops and vehicles to record a hit. Cameras and observer/controllers are everywhere to record the action for later review of what went right and what went wrong. In terms of saving lives, it is more important to learn from what went wrong. Navigating in the desert and mountains of the "Box" can be a problem. For training, GPS signals can be disrupted forcing the troops to go back to maps and compasses. In case you missed our tour, check out Fort Irwin on "Jay Leno's Garage." Alan Johnson photographers: Boyd Krueger, Charlie Carchedi, Jim Lenahan, Jimmy Peter, Kesse Ho, Marty Friedman, Marty Goldsmith, Omar Menchavez, Ron Walecki continued next page -> The Circuit Return To The NTC When Alan Johnson found out last year that the Army’s National Training Center at Fort Irwin was offering tours, I was ecstatic. In the distant past no such tours had been offered. While Alan had served as an artillery officer during the Vietnam War before it was the NTC, I had done research out there during the 80’s and 90’s when I was on the staff of the Arroyo Center, the Army’s think tank based at the RAND Corporation. It was the best job I ever had. When Alan arranged for the visit, I was the first to sign up. The NTC, a thousand square miles of rugged desert terrain, served as a stage for training brigade size units. The simulated battles were fought over a two-week training period, against a specially trained opposing force (OPFOR). The battles were closely observed by a corps of observer/controllers (O/C's), supplemented by electronic instrumentation. Daily after-action reviews picked apart the conduct of the battles at all levels. to clothe the jeep’s driver. I told him I had my old set and would gladly donate it. So when we got to the museum on our tour, there was the display, with my uniform, still bearing my name strip on the blouse, and a regular windshield sticker identifying the driver as CPL GOLDSMITH. How do you think I felt about that? I write this story because I see a great similarity between PCA and an aspect of the US Army, whose motto could well be “It isn’t just the equipment, it’s the people.“ The army folk were the best people I ever worked with. Marty Goldsmith In those days, while the training was excellent, unsurpassed any where in the world, the Army found that units continued to make the same mistakes. With personnel continuously rotated in and out of units, the Army was not capturing the lessons learned from the training. I was assigned the job of identifying those lessons and finding means of getting the lessons into Army doctrine, training, or equipment. I did this by spending a great deal of time in the field with the O/C’s and the OPFOR, having them accumulate statistical data that could be used to identify the problems. I met many people and made many friends over a period of ten years or so. Editorial License concluded Canepa in Monterey where the place was stocked with a 917 and where the sweater I wore that day matched the car I came to visit. foreground - Marty & Brita Goldsmith background - COL Hanby & CPL Goldsmith in an OPFOR Jeep Our host for the tour was COL Scott Taylor, the Garrison Commander (you could call him the mayor of the post). We started to chat, and I quickly learned that he was the son of Lieutenant General “Pete” Taylor, who I had known pretty well when he was the commanding officer of the NTC during my working days. Our host was a high school student at the time. Needless to say, he made me feel quite welcome. A side note: on a social visit to NTC a few years after I retired, I visited the museum then being constructed. One display was to depict the original OPFOR commander, COL Hamby, in his jeep. He had been killed in that jeep when it slid off a road and overturned during an exercise. He was a wonderful officer and I had known him quite well. The curator told me that they could not complete the display because they could not find one of the old OPFOR uniforms 10 What is there to say about Parade – other than don’t blink next year…..or you will miss it again and all of the wonderful opportunities it holds for a PCA member." Marty Goldsmith's Name Strip Hope Suesan stoked your interest. Maybe we can have a group of members from GPX attend next year's Parade! Bob cleaning the engine of her 356 with a long Q-tip. The next day she and her husband drove home with “our” first place trophy while Beeber and I drove home with the satisfaction of knowing we were last in class. The Circuit by Bill Clevenger Our Concours Journey I was 14 years old when I saw my first Porsche. It was red with a funny “chopped” cloth top and had four small taillights. It looked like the bathtub in my grandmother’s house. Little did I know that little red car would be the start of a 45 year journey to find a 356 Porsche. During the first 44 years of that journey, my wife, Beeber, and I bought and sold over a dozen German cars, not one of them was a 356 and only one was a Porsche. That first Porsche was a one-owner, 1979, 911 SC with 38K California miles. While we were test driving the car, I told Beeber that I didn’t like it. An hour later I was following her home, pink slip in hand. Evidently I did like it! On Friday the 13th of June, 2014, we were on our way to Monterey, seven years after the San Diego Parade. It was late afternoon when we pulled into the concours prep area of the 59th Porsche Parade. For the next two days I was in PREP HEAVEN. At night we would all go out for dinner and drinks. The next day we were back cleaning, fixing and waxing in an attempt at showing the judges a perfect car. There truly is no such thing as a perfect car, just the illusion one way we were very lucky, Michael Dolphin was our head judge and he was encouraging, kind and informative. We drove home with a 1st place trophy (we were the only car in the class). I was hooked and Beeber was still laughing. Four months later I traded our Concours 911 for a not so concours 1963 356 S90 coupe. There are cars that look good when you are standing right next to them and then there are cars that start to look good when you are 20 feet away. Our 356 was a 20-footer. I knew this when I bought the car, but what I didn’t know is that a month later I would have a 10 page list of things to be done before we dared to show the car. By the time we finished, our list had grown to 20 pages! In May of 2007, we drove our 356 Porsche to its first GPX concours, entered the Wash & Shine class and took home another 1st place trophy. Again, we were the only car in the class. I was still hooked! A short time later we were off to San Diego for our first Porsche Parade, life was good. As we pulled into the underground parking structure designated for concours cars I knew we were in trouble. The people I saw prepping their cars had The First Porsche been there for days, some The first month we had the car we cars were sitting on jack joined PCA Grand Prix Region stands and all of them and signed up for our first GPX had their engine lids concours at the Queen Mary. open. My plan had been One of the many German cars we've owned - a 1991 VW Transport sold it to buy our first Porsche We entered the Wash & Shine to drive down, spend class not knowing things like grease on seat rails and door the night, show the car and drive home the next day with jams were deductions. When I told Beeber they deducted a 1st place trophy. Our first clue that we were way in over 0.1 point for dust under the dash, she started to laugh. In our heads was when we noticed the girl parked next to us 12 The day after we got home from Parade, I started to take the 356 apart for the second time in three months. This time it would go to Jim East and Son where it would be stripped down to bare metal, have the gaps reset, metal work done and painted the original ivory color. All the chrome bits went over to Verne’s Plating, the original rims were sent to Bolton’s to be tuned-up and re-chromed. I did the interior, storage compartment and reassembled the car. I would wait for the next California Parade before detailing the engine. restoration in time for the 2014 Porsche Parade in Monterey, CA. I kicked around the idea of doing the engine myself, but realized I needed professional help. I had John Willhoit do the engine while I addressed the engine compartment. In my opinion, John and his staff are the best 356 guys in the business and more importantly, he let me work on the car while the engine was restored. What John didn’t know is I had another 10 page list of “things to do”. I was in his shop every day for a month! Our Garage For the next five years our 356 became the car to beat in the Wash & Shine class. In 2014 we drove to Palm Springs to receive the Zone 8 Wash & Shine Class and Division year end trophies for 2013. We felt now was the time to move up to the Street class. Our plan was to redo the car for the third time, which would include a complete concours engine There is no such thing as a perfect car! of one. The judges would decide who the best magician was. The day after the Parade Banquet, Beeber and I were driving home with a 1st in Class trophy. The icing on the cake was that our trophy was signed by Hans-Peter Porsche, thanks to Joe Nedza's quick thinking. 2012 PCA SBR Concours The 2015 concours season was our next challenge which turned out to be an extremely tight competition. As fate would have it, we won the Street Class and Division year end awards by 0.1 point. What a year! When Beeber and I first started this journey, it was all about winning, but now it is more and more about the people and the friendships we have made. If you make it to any of the concours please stop by, you’ll find us next to the ivory 356 coupe. Let’s talk PORSCHE. 13 The Circuit March 2016 Book Reviews for Porschephiles Bruce Herrington by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast Region U.S. Route Travel Series Travelogues by Michael Newlon published by Outskirts Press, Denver, Colorado Mike Newlon was a Riverside region PCAer. More than that, he was a nut for Porsche 912s, writing of the “Porsche 912's well deserved reputation as a near-perfect sports car...” He carefully selected the '69 he ordered new and he drove that car for 45 years, not just as a daily driver, but as a tourer. In keeping with the vintage of his car, he toured the old roads, not the freeways. Mike has moved on to a better world, but his car and his legacy live on. Mike's '69 912 has been donated to the Petersen Automotive Museum. The Museum has posted the donation on their facebook page. You can go to facebook.com and in the search area enter Petersen Automotive Museum Porsche 912. If you click on the car you will be taken to their instagram of the car. Mike's 912 is the first donation that The Petersen has posted on social media. Mike's legacy as a touring driver is preserved in a series of books he wrote to document his travels. These travelogues were carefully prepared and well illustrated to report on his experiences as a traveler of the old school – one who drove the two-lanes to see the scenery, not to get somewhere, or to arrive on time. The routes he chose, US 39, 95, 99 and 101, should be of interest to any touring oriented Porschephile near the West Coast, and especially to Southern Californians. Profusely illustrated with photos dealing with scenery and geology as well as cultural history, each book starts out with a description of his 912 and its renovation/alteration for his long distance cruises. There is also an initial discussion of the pre-interstate 1926 U.S. Federal Highway System from an era when highways had names as well as numbers. Each book contains illustrations of the route in question as presented on a 1959 vintage highway map. Virtually photographic travel diaries, remarks about the car, its performance and breakdowns are included in each book, as appropriate. Traveling these roads in the 2000s, Mike had to work hard to find tidbits of history still showing through the veneer of modernity. As old or older than US 66, these routes have as much history as that classic road, even if they don't have the cachet. And like Route 66, in some places the 14 pavement has become four lane, in other cases it parallels the new road, and in other stretches it is just no longer there. All of the history and current observations are presented in interesting detail. An eye-opener to this reviewer is the fact that the frontage road on the south side of I-10 from Banning to Palm Springs is really US 99, built in the '20s and '30s. That route extended from Calexico to Blaine, Washington at the Canadian Border, and still exists, though in metro-LA it now carries such labels as Garvey Avenue, Figueroa Street and San Fernando Road. The books cover the highway routes from border to border. Few drivers will have Mike Newlon's dedication and perseverance to peruse the entire distance, but any Southern California Porschephile who may drive portions of these routes regularly should get these books to learn what they have been overlooking all these years. There are four books in Mike's series: U.S. Route 395: Travel America's Three Flags Highway in a Classic 1969 Porsche 912; U.S. Route 99: Travel America's Pacific Highway in a Classic 1969 Porsche 912; U.S. Route 95: Travel America's Desolation Highway in a Classic 1969 Porsche 912; U.S. Route 101: Travel America's Golden Highway in a classic 1969 Porsche 912. All books are 8-1/2x11 inch softbound of roughly 90 pages with large readable typeface. Any one or all can be obtained for $24.95 each at Amazon Books http://www.amazon.com/ books. Search for Michael Newlon. ED: Mike Newlow was a great, down to earth guy... Just a guy doing what he loved. If you happened to be lucky enough you would have met Mike at our GPX concours in May 2013. He was there with a table set up selling his books. We enjoyed the brief time we knew him. Following the steps below will help minimize these issues and keep your Porsche looking clean and beautiful. The bucket, tools, towels and cleaners above can be purchased from most online auto detail supply stores or Amazon. I buy my microfiber all-purpose towels from Costco. If you have any questions about the washing process outlined above, feel free ask me at the next GPX Breakfast Club Meeting. We are all proud Porsche owners, so taking proper care of our baby makes it that much better. Next month I will cover car interior care. Preparation ●● Wash and dry vehicle in a cool shady area. Vehicle should be cool to the touch and not in direct sun light. ●● It’s recommended you wash a daily driver or car left outdoors once a week. ●● Use two 5 or 3 ½ gallon buckets, one for the car shampoo and water and one for pure water to rinse the wash mitt. It’s recommended to use a plastic Grit Guard in the rinse bucket to keep contaminants and particles at the bottom of the bucket. ●● Use a shut off valve at the end of the hose to efficiently move through the rinsing process. ●● Use either a Microfiber Chenille Wash Mitt, Sheep Skin Wash Mitt or Sea Sponge to lather the vehicle. ●● Use a wheel brush and wheel or all-purpose automotive cleaner (APC) to clean the rims and tires. ●● Use two Microfiber Waffle Weave drying towels to wipe the vehicle dry. Do not use these towels on the wheels or jambs. ●● Use separate microfiber all-purpose towels to dry the rims, door/trunk and hood jambs. Washing Process 1. Start by cleaning the wheels, tires and wells. Spray wheels, tires and wells with your preferred cleaner, agitate with brush, let dwell for a few minutes then rinse. It’s best to clean and rinse one wheel at a time, so the cleaner does not dry on surface. 2. After rims, tires and wells are cleaned, thoroughly rinse entire vehicle to remove debris. 3. Now use the wash mitt with soap to lather the vehicle. Lather and rinse one section at a time and do not let car soap dry on the vehicle. 4. Also rinse the wash mitt in the water bucket and reload with soap throughout the lathering process. Cleaners and tools used to wash & dry as described Example washing order: ●● Lather the roof, widows and side mirrors then rinse. ●● Rinse wash mitt in water bucket then reload with soap. ●● Lather hood, front bumper and upper section of the front fenders/quarter panels then rinse. Lather and rinse the lower bottom of the panels at the end of the washing process. ●● Rinse wash mitt in water bucket then reload with soap. ●● Lather the upper section of all side doors then rinse. Lather and rinse the lower door and rocker panels at the end of the washing process. ●● Rinse wash mitt in water bucket then reload with soap. ●● Lather the rear deck/trunk, bumper, and upper section of rear fenders/quarter panels then rinse. Lather and rinse the lower bottom of the panels at the end of the washing process. ●● Lastly lather the lower bottom and rocker panels of the vehicle then rinse. ●● After entire vehicle is washed give it one last rinse. 5. When the vehicle is completely washed and rinsed, use two microfiber waffle weave towels to dry the vehicle. Fold the towels over and over into smaller workable towels. Use one towel to absorb water (ring out as needed) and one to completely dry the vehicle. If necessary use a third drying towel. 6. Dry the vehicle quickly and do not let water dry on the surface as this will cause water spots. Start with the roof and windows and work your way down until the entire vehicle is completely dry. 7. Dry the door, trunk and hood jambs with a microfiber all-purpose towel. 8. Dry the rims with a microfiber all-purpose towel. 9. After the entire vehicle is washed, rinsed and dried do a final inspection to check for any missed spots. 18 19 The Circuit [It’s official.] 2015 Not Just another Motorcycle Rider Andy Shriver Shriver isis aa friend friend of of mine mine from from the the San San Diego Diego region. There are some subjects I won’t touch, e.g., I can’t build an engine, but I can help you walk through decisions that impact and maximize not only your driving experience but, first and foremost, provide the levels of safety you owe to yourself AND your passengers. Some of you already know about how militant I can be about the right tires for your car -- they are the ONLY part of your car in direct contact with the ground! For many, the obvious question becomes “What is the wrong or right tire?” The answer is not complex. It is simply that the tire you choose needs to both accommodate the speed rating potential of your car and be as closely matched to the handling characteristics of your specific car as possible. by Michael Dolphin defense, he didn’t intend to be a performance driver nor spend time on a track. What frightens me is that unplanned situation with a pack of other Porsches and suddenly everybody pushes it up to 110+ miles an hour. It was exactly a similar circumstance 20 years ago that created a very shaken husband and wife when their “it-was-on-sale” tire exploded and caused them to come very close to losing control of the car at about 100 mph. That is what drives my passion for this subject. Porsche (and other manufacturers) design your car’s suspension system with a certain amount of sidewall flexibility and tire firmness in mind. The amount of grip is affected by how much tire actually touches the ground and the “give” that varying pressures allow. Speed ratings are easy. Buy a tire that meets the highest potential speed you can achieve. So a ’65 356, a ’72 911 and an ’89 Carrera all will have different needs by that criterion. It shows up in many, many ways. Included is that circumstance where some of you have had to replace wheels because there was not enough “cushion” in the tire to protect your wheel from that pothole or curb you might have connected with. For all models from about 1992 on, Porsche AG established a relationship with several tire manufacturers to design tires matched to specific parameters of suspension and handling characteristics. Tires ARE technology – and can be designed to be the perfect contributing enhancement to all the things that make your Porsche so much different than a Ford Taurus or even a Ford Mustang. ALWAYS keep your tire pressure really, really close to what Porsche recommends for that specific tire. There are a number of places to find that information. The driver's door jamb sticker and/or the owner's manual provided by Porsche are the best sources. As an example of choices, a member recently showed me the brand new set of tires and wheels on his Porsche. They were highly recommended by a well-known tire dealer (who highlights their “motor sports” connection in their ads). The salesman said that these were some of the “...best tires in the world... and were the factory tire for the Aston-Martin super cars." The sales pitch worked. There is good and complete literature from Porsche and dealerships about tire choices for your Porsche. We also have some great tire and wheel vendors in the Los Angeles area. Wheel Enhancement in Los Angeles is probably the local dealer most familiar with Porsche appropriate tires and wheels. I’ve almost always gone to TireRack.com to do research and price comparisons on tires. Their price is quite often the lowest that you might find - but if you DO go to Discount Tires or America’s Tire, they WILL match or even BEAT the Tire Rack price!! But consider this simple correlation – Astons are front engine/rear wheel drive, mid-mounted-transmission cars that weigh 700 to 1,000 pounds more than your Porsche. In this instance there is not the slightest match between tire design and vehicle! And, worst of all, the tire recommendation was an out and out lie – the factory recommendations from Aston-Martin were for a different brand of tire altogether. Heck, call me anytime for info. I’m not in the tire business and I have no stake in what you buy. But not only do I want you to enjoy the Porsche experience, I also want to feel relatively safe if you are in the lane next to me if we happen to get into triple digits on some long stretch of flat highway…. This member does not see how his thousands of invested dollars could be such a terrible thing when the car “looks so good” with chrome and 20 inch wheels. In this owner’s Tire and wheel sizes matter… There are a whole different set of parameters for consideration when you change the sizes of either your wheels or tires. I’ll cover that another time. 26 27 Membership Report Children's Dental Health Clinic Open House March Anniversaries 25 years 22 years 17 years Matt VanLeeuwen 15 years Jeff Trask 12 years 11 years 10 years 9 years Melodi & Alvin Jones Bob Turner 8 years 7 years Tim & Jennifer Trovato David Weiss 6 years 5 years 4 years Dick Krumwied Gail Brown 3 years 2 years Alan Johnson Georgette & Joe Jankowski 1 year Andrew Kochan Jeff & Leslie Erickson Norma Ann Dawson Vince Parker Ken Bartkus Rick & Nanci Perkins Jeff & Tracy Trask Gail Brown & Andrew Boston Rob Krumwiede & Katerina Adamik Ron & Vicki Mazzella Michael & Phyllis McGihon Bob Turner & Bill Krause Jeremy & Mengwei Campbell Stephen Glas Josh & Dyan Hoffman Katerina Adamik Jim Wolcott Rob Krumwiede Joe & Georgette Jankowski Richard & Jeanne Shaw Norma Ann Dawson Matthew VanLeeuwen Tim & Jennifer Trovato Peter Vasquez & Theresa Sardisco David & Diane Demaria Alvin & Melodi Jones Vince Parker Carlos & Judi Persichetti Richard & Nerissa Simpson Steven & Erica Rhodes Martin Schwartz Micky & Phyllis William & Carol Smith McGihon Scott & Beverly Littleworth Ralph Lopez Robert Taylor Mark & Michaele Aguirre Alan & Gretchen Johnson Don & Sue Matz Carol & William Smith Deedee Gordon & Moses Berkson Tony Grabon Mandhir Singh & Navdeep Kaur Jim & Ryan Wolcott Jeremy, Joey & Ken Bartkus Mengwei Campbell Atul & Sapana Patel Rick & Nanci Perkins Mark Aguirre Ramon Tapanes by Jimmie Mitchell the costs of the Dental Center must be fundraised.
