They trap moisture inside just as effectively as they keep moisture out. • Open doors and windows provide air circulation and ventilation but security considerations mean that we are increasingly less likely to use this option. As a result houses tend to remain closed up more often. • Poor ventilation results in a buildup of moisture generated by cooking/bathing/showering/clothes washing- drying/LPG gas heating...even breathing! • Stale air can be caused by cooking smells, odours remaining in the bathroom, a general lack of ventilation around the house as well as a damp atmosphere. Problems Caused by Poor Ventilation • All these problems cause an avoidable level of discomfort as well as the risk of respiratory illness and general poor health. • Problems also occur when steam from the kitchen or bathroom finds cooler surfaces around the house on which to condense. Warm, moisture-laden air condenses on cold surfaces such as glass, cold ceilings and cold wet-wall linings. This is the moisture that you can see. • Moisture you cannot see is still present in the atmosphere and will be absorbed into fabrics, wall linings, bedding, etc. Attempts to conserve heat by sealing windows and therefore reducing natural ventilation makes this problem even worse. • Condensation can cause considerable problems from peeling wallpaper and mould growth to severe long term structural damage to building materials. Moisture Generators: BATHROOM CONDENSATION SHOWERING GAS HEATING KITCHEN TOILET LAUNDRY BREATHING WATERING PLANTS Stale air out Correct Ventilation Ventilate Outside = Healthy Home Incorrect Ventilation Trapped moist air Inside the home = Unhealthy In dwellings with a metal roof, or where the roof is lined with sarking, ventilating directly into the roof space is not permitted under the Building Code. Thomas and Betts | www.manrose.com.au | [email protected] 3 VENTILATION SELECTION Your Ventilation Solutions Damp air out It is best to remove moisture from where it is generated to outside the house before it has a chance to spread to other parts of the house. Fresh air in It is best to remove moisture from where it is generated to outside the house before it has a chance to spread to other parts of the house. Use ducted fans, through-wall fans or window fans at all times. DO NOT use ceiling fans which discharge into the ceiling cavity, this only moves the problem. Moisture will permeate insulation and ceiling linings causing further problems. In particular with bathrooms think in terms of “room-conditioning”. Warm, moist air is immediately attracted to cold surfaces, where it condenses into water droplets. Cold surfaces include glass, mirrors, tiles, wet-wall linings, cold un-insulated ceiling linings, etc. You cannot remove all of this air at a rate fast enough to stop this happening and if you could, you would be standing in a wind tunnel. Use of a bathroom heater to warm the room prior to use greatly assists in reducing condensation. Fan Placement Careful location of an extraction fan will ensure maximum air-flow through the room. Air extracted from a bathroom, for example, can be replaced with dry air drawn from an adjacent bedroom or hallway, in turn, drawn from an open window or door. This ensures that fresh air is being drawn into the entire house at regular periods. Switching the fan on before starting showering or cooking sets up effective air-flows before condensation problems occur. Closing doors to adjacent living areas assists in stopping the transfer of moisture to those areas but ensure that sufficient air can enter under the door to replace extracted air. Use a door vent if necessary. For a fan to remove air effectively, the same amount of air being extracted must be able to enter the room. E.g. air in = air out. An air-tight room will mean no air movement. If the room is tightly sealed (e.g. a tight-fitting door, with no gap at the bottom), you may need to fit a through-door grille to allow replacement air into the room. Poor Circulation 4 Medium Circulation Best Circulation VENTILATION SELECTION Fan Regulations What the law states Australian Building Code Paragraph 3.8.5.0 states: Performance requirement P2.4.5 is satisfied for mechanical ventilation system if it is installed in accordance with AS 1668.2. “Mechanical ventilation for acceptable indoor air quality”, except that any contaminated air from a sanitary compartment or bathroom must: a. Exhaust directly to outside the building by way of ducts; or b. Exhaust into the roof space provided: i. It is adequately ventilated by open eaves, and/or roof vents; or ii. The roof is clad in roofing tiles without sarking or similar materials, which would prevent venting through gaps between tiles. As detailed above, in dwellings with a metal roof, or where the roof is lined with sarking, ventilating directly in to the roof space is not permitted by building codes unless the roof space is adequately ventilated by open eaves or roof vents. The Manrose range offers many ducted solutions to exhaust to the outside through wall, roof or eaves to comply with the latest building code. Natural Ventilation for the above is acceptable as long as opening windows in each room have an area of 5% or more of the floor area of the room. AS1668 (summarised): “...Buildings shall have a means of collecting or otherwise removing: cooking fumes and odours; steam from laundering, utensil washing, bathing and showering; odours from sanitary and waste storage spaces; poisonous or flammable fumes and gases...” BCA Compliance to AS/NZ 1530 Part 3 Requirements are: Internal Surface: Spread of flame not >0 External Surface: Spread of flame not >7 Smoke Developed not >3 Smoke developed not >5 AS/NZS 1530 Part 3 This is the Australian standard 1530, method for fire tests on building materials components and structures. “Simultaneous determination of ignitability, flame propagation, heat release and smoke release” Bathrooms Kitchens The regulations require a fan capable of a minimum extraction capacity of 25 litres per second when installed. The regulations require a fan capable of a minimum extraction capacity of 50 litres per second when installed. Toilets Laundries The regulations require a fan capable of a minimum extraction capacity of 25 litres per second when installed. The regulations require a fan capable of a minimum extraction capacity of 20 litres per second when installed. Thomas and Betts | www.manrose.com.au | [email protected] 5 VENTILATION SELECTION Calculating Fan Performance Litres/Second (l/s) Milk 1 Litre Working out the right fan for the job • Calculate the room volume in metres (l x W x H). Cubic Metres/Hour (m³/hr) 1m • Multiply the room volume by the recommended air changes per hour for that room. Always use the higher limit. 1m • The result is the total performance required in cubic metres per hour. 1m To convert from one to other types of measurement: If you know Litres/Second (l/s): l/s x 3.6 = m3/hr (e.g. 25 l/s x 3.6 = 90m³/hr). If you know Cubic Metres/Hour (m³/hr): m3/hr ÷ 3.6 = l/s (e.g. 200m³/hr ÷ 3.6 = 55.55 l/s). Note: 1m3 = 1000 Litres ACH AIR CHANGES PER HOUR (ACH) The number of times the total room volume of air is changed each hour. Refer to the table below for the recommended Air Changes per hour based on the room type. Select a fan with a higher performance than this figure. For Example: What is the best fan for a bathroom that is 2.8m long by 2.8m wide with a ceiling height of 2.4m? • Calculate the volume of the bathroom: 2.8 x 2.8 x 2.4 = 18.8m3. • 11-15 air changes per hour are recommended for a bathroom. Multiply the room volume by 15: 18.8m3 x 15 = 282m3/hr. • The fan to choose for this bathroom would be a fan that performs at greater than 282m3/hr. • A fan that has a performance level of 313m3/hr or higher (e.g. XP150, or SF150) would do this job. Simple facts: Smaller duct = greater resistance to airflow. More bends = greater resistance to airflow. Longer duct runs = increasingly reduced airflow. 01 Wrinkled ducting causes turbulence and reduces airflow: WRINKLED DUCT AIRFLOW Compare Centrifugal Against Axial Fan Performance: SF100 (axial) vs an SF200 (centrifugal) fan. The starting point is the free air performance of 23 l/s for the axial and 31 l/s for the centrifugal. As duct is added to each of these fans, this increases the pressure (Pa) and decreases volume of air moved. From the below example you can see that at 20Pa of pressure the 100mm axial fan airflow has stopped whereas the 100mm centrifugal fan is still moving 29 l/s! SF100 & SF200 PERFORMANCE GRAPH* 02 Smoother, extended ducting allows smooth, increased airflow: SMOOTH DUCT AIRFLOW SF200 SF100 Manrose ALUDUCT flexible ducting retains its stretched-out shape (for smooth airflow) far better than most competitive products. *Graphs are a visual representation only. Many competitive ducts tend to shrink back on themselves, wrinkling the duct fabric. ID150 (axial) vs a MAN150 (centrifugal) fan. The starting point is the free air performance of 89 l/s for the axial and 115 l/s for the centrifugal. Fan type Centrifugal: Pressure developing fans which achieve good flow against the resistance created in a ducted system. Particularly useful in venting areas like internal bathrooms/laundries, multi-room extraction systems, heat-transfer systems, etc. Mixed Flow: Powerful in-duct mounted fans, designed for applications that require high air flows, with low relative noise. Can handle more pressure than an axial fan, although not as powerful as a centrifugal fan. Axial: Suitable for wall, window and roof applications where they can extract directly to the outside. Short duct runs are an option but the length of duct should be limited. e.g. 100mm dia : 2-3m length 125mm dia : 3-4m length 150mm dia : 4-5m length As duct is added to each of these fans, this increases the pressure (Pa) and decreases the volume of air moved. From the below example you can see that at 120 Pa of pressure the 150mm axial fan airflow has stopped whereas the 150mm centrifugal fan is still moving 102 l/s! 0 72 144 216 288 360 432 504 30 MAN150 25 300 250 20 200 15 150 ID150 10 100 50 5 0 20 40 60 80 100 120 140 *Graphs are a visual representation only. Thomas and Betts | www.manrose.com.au | [email protected] 7 Wet Areas & Recommended Fan Types When considering where in the room to place an extractor fan, you must consider the wet areas. Zone 1: This is the zone directly within the shower or bath up to 2.25 metres above the floor and 150mm around the bath/ shower cubicle. A SELV fan or an in-line fan kit will be required in this zone. Zone 1: Requires a SELV Fan or an In-Line fan kit For example if a fan is mounted directly over the bath or shower it must be a low voltage fan (SELV). Zone 2: Any fan model can be used Zone 3: Any fan model can be used Zone 2: This zone is 0.6 metres horizontally outside of zone 1 and up to 2.25 metres above the floor. Zone 3: The outer layer is zone 3, which is 2.4 metres horizontally outside of zone 2 and 2.25 metres above the floor. Locate your Ventilation Fan Wet area zone guide Outside Zones Outside Zones Zone 1: Requires a Low Voltage Fan. Zone 2: Any fan model can be used. Zone 3: Any fan models can be used. How To Order Select the model that exhausts the closest to your requirements. If the performance required falls between two fans, it is recommended you select the one handling the most air. 8 VENTILATION SELECTION Fan Application Examples Location of your ventilation fan will depend on the physical constraints of your room. The wet area zone guide (shown on the previous page) will help you decide the most suitable physical installation to meet your requirements. Within the above mounting options there are various other features available, such as: • TIMER (maintain fan run-on after the room is vacated). • PULLCORD (Switch at fan, instead of wall switch control). • AUTO-SHUTTER (electrically operated shutters inside the fan - closed when the fan is not running to stop draughts). • PIR SENSOR (provide automatic motion-sensor control of fans). 1. Ceiling Mounted Fan 4. In-Line Mounted Fan Kit Designed for low-pitch roofs or between floors, where there is no ceiling access. Also available with heat lamps & lighting. Most common bathroom installation, the fan is mounted in the ceiling space with the grille directly above the source of the steam. Generally this type of installation is quieter as the fan is not directly in the room. 01 04 Page Reference 12-21 2. Thru Wall Fan Kit Used where the bathroom is on an external wall, or there is no ceiling space for an in-line fan. Page Reference 32-53 5. Thru Roof Kit 02 Used where there is limited access to the roof space, or where there is no soffit available. Thru Roof Kits can be used with any extraction fan, or use a Thru Roof Fan Kit with the fan mounted within the cowl. Page Reference 22-25 05 3. Window Mounted Fan Used in situations where an existing window fan is being replaced, or where there is no available external wall space and no ceiling space access. 03 Page Reference 56-57 Page Reference 54-55 Thomas and Betts | www.manrose.com.au | [email protected] 9 SELECTION CHART Selecting the right fan is Easy Wall/Ceiling Fans ROOM TYPE Toilets Laundries - No Dryer Basement Offices These rooms require between 6 and 10 ACH Bathrooms Showers Ensuites These rooms require between 11 and 15 ACH Kitchens Laundries - With Dryer These rooms require between 15 and 20 ACH Thru Wall Fan Kits Room Size (m3) VA Lo-Carbon Pro-Series Classic Pro-Series Classic 1-5m3 LCS150 XFLP125 XF125 XPLP125 XP125 6-10m3 LCS150 XFLP125 XF125 XPLP125 XP125 11-15m3 LCS150 XFLP150 XF150 XPLP150 XP150 1-10m3 LCS150 XFLP150 XF150 XPLP150 XP150 11-15m3 LCS150 XFLP150 XF150 XPLP150 XP150 16-20m3 - XFLP150 XF150 XPLP150 XP150 21-30m3 - 1-5m3 LCS150 XFLP150 XF150 XPLP150 XP150 6-10m3 - XFLP150 XF150 XPLP150 XP150 11-20m3 - XFS230 XPS230 XF230 XPS230 3 Step Selection Guide 01 01 01 02 02 02 03 03 Select your required application, e.g. Bathrooms (11-15 air changes per hour). We strive to provide the best possible flexible duct at a competitive and fair price, that complies to all necessary Standards. Ducting that does not comply to AS 4254 may be used on Reverse Cycle and Evaporative Systems except in Victoria. The onus is on you to choose and use compliant product. Australian Standards (AS) 4254 & (AS) 4508 Most Commonly Asked Questions: Q. What is AS 4254? Q. What is AS 4508? A. Australian Duct Fire Standard (AS) 4254. This standard was developed to ensure public safety, that the product tested will not support combustion and will function as designed for its service life. All heating systems in Australia ignited from a flame source and all commercial class 2 to 9 buildings must FULLY COMPLY with AS 4254. In Victoria all Ducting Installations must be fire rated to AS 4254. Q. How do I know if the duct passes AS 4254? A. If a flexible duct passes AS 4254 it has been tested to and passed eleven difficult tests. Ensure the product in the test has been tested in its composite form, just the way you buy it, i.e. duct core, insulation blanket and outer jacket. Each test should state product name and its componentry make-up. If you cannot be supplied test reports to cover each of the eleven tests or there is a reluctance from duct manufacturers/duct assemblers to produce any or all of these reports it is likely that the duct DOES NOT comply to AS 4254. Manufacturers/duct assemblers are under no obligation to produce AS 4254 compliant product. If you install flexible duct that does not comply, on a gas fired heating A. Australian insulation Standard (AS) 4508. Due to poor quality insulation being used on ducting, AS 4508 was developed to create minimum acceptable thermal values for ducting, helping to reduce the greenhouse effect and lower running costs. This standard specifies how insulation on the ducting must be tested so an overall thermal or “R” value can be achieved consistently throughout all the duct in the system. Q. How do I know if the insulation meets the requirements of AS 4508? A. Ask to see the test report from your duct manufacturer /duct assembler that shows that the insulation had been tested to and complies with AS 4508. To achieve a thermal rating of R0.6 you must use a minimum of 250 g/ m² polyfibre insulation at 40mm thick. To achieve an R1.0 you must use a minimum of 450 gram/square metre polyfibre insulation at 70mm thick. Fibreglass thermal values remain the same as they have for years, 25mm=R0.6 and 40mm=R1.0. There will be variations depending on the manufacturer of the insulation but in general the above rules apply. Compliance to AS/NZ 1530 Part 3 AS/NZS 1530 Part 3 Requirements are: This is the Australian standard 1530, method for fire tests on building materials components and structures. Internal Surface: Spread of flame not >0 Smoke Developed not >3 External Surface: Spread of flame not >7 Smoke developed not >5 “Simultaneous determination of ignitability, flame propagation, heat release and smoke release” AS 4254 comprises of the tests listed below: (AS) 1530 part 3 - radiant burn test Underwriters Laboratories 64 (U.L) 181 part 9 - flaming burn test (U.L) 181 part 14 - static load test (U.L) 181 part 11 - mould growth test (U.L) 181 part 15 - impact test (U.L) 181 part 12.2 - low temperature test (U.L) 181 part 17 - positive & negative pressure test (U.L) 181 part 12.3 - high temperature test (U.L) 181 part 18 - collapse test (U.L) 181 part 13 - puncture test (U.L) 181 part 19 - tension test DUCTING INSTALLATION & USAGE The layout of flexible duct, the number of bends, the sharpness of the bend and the amount of sag allowed between support joints will have serious effects on system performance due to the increased resistance to airflow each introduces. Use the minimum length of flexible duct to make connections. It is not recommended that excess length of ducts be installed to allow for possible future relocations of air terminal devices. Avoid installation where exposure to direct sunlight can occur e.g: skylight. Grilles and diffusers need to be supported independently of the flexible duct. Repair torn or damaged vapour barrier/jacket with duct tape listed and labelled to Standard AS4254. If internal core is penetrated, replace flexible duct or treat as a join. Right Setup Install duct fully extended, do not install in the compressed state or use excess lengths. This will noticeably increase friction losses. Wrong Setup Avoid bending ducts across sharp corners or incidental contact with metal fixtures, pipes or conduits. Flexible ducts shall be installed with a bend radius to duct diameter ratio in accordance with the following info on the next page. Thomas and Betts | www.manrose.com.au | [email protected] 65 DUCTING INSTALLATION & USAGE Duct velocity R/D ratio centerline radius to duct diameter: Up to 5m/s x 0.6 5m/s x 1.0 Above 8m/s x 1.5 e.g. Assuming duct velocity of 8m/s Steam Pipes Wrong Setup Do not install near hot equipment (e.g. heaters boilers, steam pipes etc.) that is above the recommended flexible duct use temperature. 66 AIR DUCTS 01 Non-metallic with Plain Ends. After desired length is determined, cut completely around and through duct with knife or scissors. Cut wire with wire cutters. Fold back duct jacket and insulation. 02 Slide at least 1” (25mm) of core over the fitting up to the bead. Seal the core to collar with at least two wraps of duct tape. Secure connection with cable ties placed over the core and duct tape. 03 Pull jacket and insulation back over core. Tape jacket with at least 2 wraps of duct tape ensuring end of the outer jacket is secured to the spigot. Cable ties may be used in place of or in combination with the duct tape. Thomas and Betts | www.manrose.com.au | [email protected] 67 JOINS 01 Fold back duct jacket and insulation from core. Butt two cores together on a 4” (100mm) length metal sleeve or polymer sleeve. 02 03 Tape cores together with at least 2 wraps of duct tape. Connection can be secured with 2 cable ties placed over the taped core ends. Pull jacket and insulation back over cores. Tape jackets together with at least 2 wraps of duct tape. 68 SUPPORTING FLEXIBLE DUCT 01 Flexible duct shall be supported at intervals, no greater distance than 1.5m. Maximum permissible sag is 60mm per metre of spacing between supports. A connection to rigid duct or equipment shall be considered a support joint. SAG 60mm Long horizontal duct runs with sharp bends shall have additional supports before and after the bend approximately one duct diameter from the centreline of the bend. Recommend Hanging Straps DCT0808. 02 Hanger or saddle material in contact with the flexible duct shall be of sufficient width to prevent any restriction of the internal diameter of the duct when the weight of the supported section rests on the hanger or saddle material. In no case will the material contacting the flexible duct be less than 40mm wide. 40mm min 40mm Wire 03 Factory installed suspension systems integral to the flexible duct is an acceptable hanging method. Thomas and Betts | www.manrose.com.au | [email protected] 69 SUPPORTING FLEXIBLE DUCT Flexible ducts may rest on ceiling joists or truss supports. Maximum spacing between supports shall not exceed 1.5m. Ceiling Joist (1.8m) Max Vertically installed duct shall be stabilised by support straps at a max of 1.8m. Support the duct between a metal connection and bend by allowing the duct to extend straight for 100mm before making the bend. This will avoid possible damage of the flexible duct by the edge of the metal collar. NOTE: Upon completion of installation, please test in accordance with 2.8.2 of standard AS4254. NOTE: factory-made air ducts may not be used for vertical risers in air duct systems serving more than two stories. 70 FLEXIBLE DUCTING Flexible Ducting Friction FRICTION LOSS GRAPH Loss Graph Technical Data Flexible Ducting Friction Loss Graph Technical Data 3/h 3/h Air Volume mm AirVolume Air Volume m3/h (m3/h 3.6 = l/s) 3/h / 3.6 = l/s) 3/h (m(m / 3.6 = l/s) (m3/h / 3.6 = l/s) Air Volume m3/h Diameter of Duct in mm Flexible Ducting Friction Loss Graph Friction Loss (Pa per metre) 40 40 metre) Loss (Pa Friction FrictionLoss (Paperper metre) 0 Technical Data Friction Loss (Paper metre) Fax: (09) 259 1661 • Email: [email protected] • Website: www.securimax.co.nz Fax: (09) 259 1661 • Email: [email protected] • Website: www.securimax.co.nz Thomas and Betts | www.manrose.com.au | [email protected] Fax: (09) 259 1661 • Email: [email protected] • Website: www.securimax.co.nz 71 ALUDUCT/COMFLEX FLEXIBLE DUCTING Diameter (mm) Length (m) MANROSE ALUDUCT COMFLEX NUDE COMFLEX INSULATED Order Code Order Code Order Code 100 1 3 6 DCT0357 DCT0328 125 1 3 6 DCT0358 DCT0329 150 1 3 6 DCT0359 DCT0330 200 3 6 250 3 6 DCT0367 DCT0409 Nude DCT0368 DCT0410 DCT0369 DCT0411 DCT0088 DCT0399 DCT0331 DCT0377 DCT0412 DCT0089 DCT0343 DCT0332 DCT0370 DCT0413 DCT0400 DCT0344 300 3 6 DCT0380 DCT0414 DCT0401 DCT0402 350 3 6 DCT0415 DCT0416 DCT0403 DCT0404 400 3 6 DCT0417 DCT0418 DCT0405 DCT0406 • • • • • • Insulated Fully complies to AS 1530 Pt3. Heat Trans is the professional brand in heat transfer systems and is the brand of choice for electrical contractors. Leading the market for over 15 years, Heat Trans is at the forefront of product development and innovation and the only heat transfer systems using acoustic insulated ducting and digital controllers. How does Heat Trans work 01 02 03 Excess heat from your heat source will rise to ceiling level where it is trapped. This excess heat can reach temperatures of 30-35°C. This excess heat can be effectively transferred to other rooms using a high quality fan and acoustic insulated ducting. Heat trans Features The Ultecon digital thermostat controller measures and displays the temperature of your lounge and lets you preset your preferred room temperature. When your lounge temperature exceeds your preferred room temperature the system will automatically start to transfer the excess heat to other rooms in your home. The 2 and 3 room systems also offer fan speed control, which allows you to set your preferred fan speed giving you ultimate control over the volume of heated air being transferred. Superior Fans High quality multi-speed fans for optimum airflow ventilation in the home that cost as little as a light bulb (between 70W and 120W) to run. These high quality fans have been specifically selected to ensure correct airflow and pressure levels are achieved. Whisper quiet The unique acoustic insulated ducting reduces air transfer noise to a ‘whisper quiet’ level. Better temperature retention is achieved, ensuring optimal heat transfer of excess warm air. One Room Controller Adjustable diffusers Easily adjustable to allow balancing of the airflow into each room. Simply twist the centre section of the diffuser to allow more or less air into each room. Or simply close any diffuser when the room is not in use. Optional extras Two/Three Room Controller Summer feature Introduce fresher cooler air into your home in summer with the Summer-Vent Extension Kit, to enable year round use of your system. With the inlet grille installed under your soffit, fresher cooler air is filtered using a high efficiency F7 filter and is distributed throughout your home via your Heat Trans outlets. The system is controlled via a standard wall switch which operates the motorised damper to start drawing air from outside. Note: When the summer feature is working the lounge warmed room inlet is switched off via the damper and will not receive the cooled air directly from outside, however due to air pressure a natural re-circulation occurs throughout the home. Summer Feature Extension Kit Extension kit The Pro-Series One Outlet Extension Kit is designed to extend your standard three room Heat Trans system so you can distribute warm air to an extra room within your home. The extension kit gives you the flexibility to add additional outlet/s to your Heat Trans system. By adding additional outlet/s to your system you are simply dividing the available heated air amongst more rooms. Note: All Heat Trans kits can be extended. 1 Room kits can be extended to a max length of 12 metres ( 6 metres supplied in kit). 2 Room kits can be extended to a max length of 21 metres (12 metres supplied in kit). 3 Room kits can be extended to a max length of 24 metres (15 metres supplied in kit).
