DANNY O’FLAHERTY
The Irish Society News
We are sorry to hear of another friend of the Irish
Society, Danny O'Flaherty, who was in a serious car
accident last month and had to cancel his annual
Christmas Show at the University of St.Thomas this
year.
If you would like to drop a get well note to
Danny, you can access his website at
http://www.dannyoflaherty.com. We look forward to his return to health and
to the UST stage!
JOAN LEE (BOWERS) MURPHY - R.I.P.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Murphy and
Bowers families. Service to the ministries of the Catholic
Church was important to Joan. She gave countless volunteer
hours to St Cecilia's Catholic Community, as well as several
other Catholic outreach programs. Joan was a longtime
volunteer at The Little Flower Thrift Shop, and was recently
recognized for her service by Bishop McCarthy.
Joan was a Lifetime Member of the Irish Society. She will be missed greatly.

BLOOMSDAY PARTY SUCCESS
Bloomsday was a great success at the Bull and Bear Tavern. Our Publican Host,
Tommy O’Riley and his staff put out a great spread. Irish music, Irish Dancers and
great food and drinks - impossible not to have fun.
Bloomsday is a commemoration and celebration of the life of Irish writer James
Joyce during which the events of his novel Ulysses (which is set on 16 June 1904)
are relived. It is observed annually on 16 June in Dublin and elsewhere.
Thanks to Pete Little and the Irish Society for keeping the Bloomsday Irish Tradition
alive and well. Below are a few of the Bloomsday Celebraters.

BROOKLYN tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan),
a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by
the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s
home for the shores of New York City. Homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh
romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new
vivacity is disrupted by her past, and she must choose between two countries
and the lives that exist within. Check local listing for times and locations.

Thank you to all who were kind enough to contribute as
sponsors for my MS 150 ride from Hammond, Louisiana to
McComb, Mississippi and back again. I was not racing by any
means, some of the hotshots on our team did it in 3 hours.
I was double that time, but I made it. A double thank you to
those whose employers participated in the matching funds
program. The event with 1100 riders participating raised
over $650,000 for the National MS Society. I can only
imagine what the Texas ride raises with 15,000 riders!
