We have many great program opportunities awaiting you and all members of your family! Some exciting camps (ASAP, Hoop House Camp, Football, Summer Sizzlers, Summer Playgrounds) provide great opportunities and lots of fun! Below is a provided update on some of our park projects: 1. Vietnam Vets Parking Operational and Safety Enhancement Project by the time this brochure reaches your home should be completed. This project will provide an increase of upper parking lot +35 cars, a pedestrian walk way, wider culvert and traffic turn around at the southern end of the parking lot. 2. The Dog Park off of Quinnipiac St. with the land being cleared prior to the spring, the fencing at the park is complete. The park is estimated for an early summer opening. Thanks to DPW Engineering and the WDLA for their continued support and efforts in making this project real. 3. Doolittle Park new hard ball field backstop is complete. In addition, scheduled for installation the end of spring, player benches will be newly installed and new shade structure. 4. Harrison Park little league field backstop has been completed, with any hope, the parking lot will be chip sealed this summer. 5. Pragemann Park will be receiving an expanded parking lot for 41 cars with work scheduled to begin late spring – early summer. 6. West Side Eagles Memorial Park Baseball/Football Field is slated for a total makeover starting this August. The project includes new/improved drainage, irrigation, sod and some fencing. The park will be closed for baseball and football for almost up to a year. I appreciate the efforts made of all of the youth leagues making accommodations for the leagues temporarily without fields. I know after the winter that just past, we are all looking forward to the great summer weather. Please enjoy all of the enclosed recreational opportunities provided this summer! The Parks and Recreation Department would like to welcome back all of the returning 7th and 8th graders while also welcoming the new 6th graders. To ensure that you are able to attend all of the dances, you must purchase a photo ID pass. ALL PARTICIPANTS WHO HAVE A PASS FROM THE 2014-15 SEASON CAN HOLD ONTO THEIR PASSES. UPON REGISTERING FOR THIS COMING YEAR A STICKER WILL BE PLACED ON THE BACK OF THE EXISTING CARD. NO MORE PICTURES, NO MORE FILLING OUT AN ID CARD AGAIN. The dance pass allows you entry to 7 dances. No passes (new or replacement) will be sold on the day of the dance. Photo ID’s will go on sale June 1st for $25. As of Monday, August 31st, all dance passes will be $40. We encourage everyone to take advantage of the discounted price. Winners from our local contest will advance to the sectional competition and then possibly to the state. This could just be the first step on the way to a team championship at a NFL game. There is absolutely no cost for this program. For more information call Kenny Michaels, Program Specialist at 294-2120. Competitors must also compete in comfortable sneakers. No cleats. 4263.300 KIDS OFF ROAD TRIATHLON ON JULY 11TH Kids will swim in Choate’s indoor 25 meter pool, bike and run on mostly grass and some trails. All participants will be required to ride fat-tire bikes (tires should be at least 1.25 inches wide and have knobs to grip loose gravel) and wear a bike helmet. No exceptions – equipment will be checked race morning! The course will be monitored and closed to vehicle traffic. Kids ages 7-10 will swim 50 meters, bike 1.2 miles, and run 1/2 mile. Kids ages 11-14 will swim 100 meters, bike 2.2 miles, and run 3/4 mile. Awards: Each participant will receive a T-shirt for registering and a finisher’s medal for their efforts. Free raffle and refreshments for all after event! Date: Saturday July 11th 9:00 am Location: Choate Pool Fee: $25 Voyagers - Trips All trips are subject to change in price and itinerary. Day tour cancellation policy applies to all Wallingford Park & Recreation day tours operated by Friendship Tours Inc. Any passenger that cancels a reservation 7 days or less prior to departure will not be eligible for a refund. We will examine cancellations on a case by case basis to determine any exceptions to this rule. Please note the Recreation Dept. will make every effort to send a representative from the office to see off the trip to and from our destination and to hear any complaints, concerns and or recommendations. It should be understood that this person is not a tour guide. Please retain the same seats throughout the trip. A tip for the coach driver is included in the trip fee. Please contribute only if you wish since the gratuity is included in the trip fees. Trips are rain or shine, unless the tour company cancels. Many trips involve walking tours; either with a tour guide or on your own. Children must be accompanied by an adult unless otherwise specified. No lap sitters on the coach bus. Complete trip itineraries will be distributed on the morning of the trip. Travel insurance is recommended for overnight trips and is offered through Friendship Tours. If you do, then this is the camp for you! Join us for an engaging week of exploring many different STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) topics from the natural world around us to designing vehicles that help us sail on oceans and fly into the air. You won’t be disappointed with the many hands-on engaging investigations and opportunity to create your own path to solve problems. Each day, each participant will experience a SciDome show in our state of the Digital Planetarium and Learning Dome. Maximum 50 Participants When: July 20th – July 24th Location: Sheehan High School Instructors: Christopher Stone, Greg Colonese, Lori Farkash and Lauren Bernacchia Fee: $150 WALLINGFORD STEM ACADEMY SUMMER CAMPS Wallingford STEM Academy is comprised of certified teachers, and informal educators, who believe in furthering student understanding of STEM concepts with a special focus on gender equity, engaging girls in STEM, and access to our programming for all students. Our mission is to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education, and 21st century thinking skills, through direct involvement of students, families and the regional community. In the summer 2015, we are expanding our after school Wallingford STEM Academy program throughout the summer with the following course offerings for students in grades 4 to 8. Students who have completed grade 3 are welcome to register. Wallingford STEM Academy is a program of Wallingford Youth and Social Services. Our 2015 STEM Summer Camps are being offered in collaboration with the Wallingford Parks and Recreation Department, Wallingford Youth and Social Services, the Spanish Community of Wallingford, the Wallingford Public Schools, and the Wallingford Education Association. 2005.301 ROBOTICS CAMP Join us for an exciting day of building robots with Legos! Participants will use both Lego WeDo and Lego Mindstorms Educational Kits to build and program robots to overcome obstacles and challenges. This day will be filled with hands on building, programming, computer coding and problem solving. Experiences will be differentiated to meet the needs of beginners and those experienced with robotics. Engineering campers will investigate with highly engaging hands-on K’NEX and Lego challenges such as windmills, bridges and simple machines. These, and many other STEM related investigations, will be taught in our STEM Education Classroom at the Spanish Community of Wallingford. If so, come and enjoy a fun and exciting session of Space Camp and learn about the wonders of space science. Investigations will include designing, engineering and launching a model rocket. Campers will also explore astronomy basics, make their own telescope and take a field trip to a Wallingford’s Planetarium at Sheehan High School. Each participant will plan, design and engineer a boat using various skills from measurement, understanding angles, and engineering. Campers will build foam or wooden boats using our Boat Hull Design Kit. Campers will analyze their boats’ wake patterns and learn firsthand the effects of buoyancy. Each day campers will hike the Quinnipiac Linear Trail property noting interesting insects, trees, plants, and wildlife while keeping a digital record of their discoveries. During all of these experiences, instruction will be given by experienced educators on how to use digital cameras. Campers will also take local field trips to Bertini Park in Wallingford, CT. Campers will assemble and operate thirteen different motorized rides such as roller coasters, swing ride, boom ride, ferris wheel, the scrambler and a carousel. Campers will learn how to apply simple formulas for acceleration, force and how to analyze the data that they’ve gathered when testing their amusement park rides. Lifeguards are on duty during the posted public swim hours. Changing rooms and showers are available. You must purchase a pool tag to enter into the pool. Tags are good from June – August. Pool tags are $15.00 pp. for resident’s ages 13-62, Children 12 and under are $5.00, Seniors 63 and over are $5.00. (Please note all participants will be charged a $15.00 replacement for all lost tags.) Children 15 and under are required to have an adult present with them at the pool. Community Pool opening dates June 13, 14, June 20 - August 16, 2015. Hours 11:00a.m. -7:00pm. Monday – Sunday. The Rec. Department reserves the right to close the pool for any special events. We will be selling Non-resident passes this year. A Wallingford Resident must sponsor a Non-resident and accompany them to purchase a pass. There will be two forms of non-resident passes a Two Week Pass which will be dated and cost $15.00 per person and a Season pass which will cost $30.00 per person. All participants that purchased a pass last year should bring it in and we will put a 2015 sticker on it so that you do not have to have a new photo taken. PAGE 18 Health & Fitness Pool Party Rentals The Wallingford Parks and Recreation Department allows Wallingford Residents and Non Residents to rent out a shade structure (canopy) at the Community Pool for birthday parties, anniversaries etc. Participants must obtain a facility request form from the Park and Recreation Dept. and allow 5-7 days for processing. If available, participants may rent one shade structure for a maximum number of 30 people at $40.00 per hour per Wallingford Resident and $80.00 per hour for Non Residents. Our instructors have been trained through the American Red Cross and hold a valid WSI *Water Safety Instructor Certification. The program will be set up with a maximum of 6 children per class and there will be 4 classes per session totaling 24 children. Each session will go from 9:00-11:00am. Classes are ½ hour duration. Parents should indicate at time of registration how much swim experience their child has had. (Lessons will be open to Wallingford children ages 3-6 years of age and 6-11 years of age.
