A Happy Mother’s and Father’s Day to all our members! This is a family time of the year, when members look forward to
the June holidays to spend quality time with their family members. For those of you who will be in Singapore during the
holidays, we welcome you to come and enjoy the host of social activities we will be organising. More details on these
interesting activities are on pages 16 and 17.
We are happy to note that the Mother’s Day lunch organised by the Club at Tessensohn Clubhouse, Qian Xi
Restaurant on 12 May 2013 is fully subscribed. We are sure that besides enjoying the sumptuous 8-course sit-down
lunch, families will have fun with the array of activities planned.

Planet Bowl. Further upgrading works are underway and by 5 May 2013, Planet Bowl will have the latest Vector
Plus scoring system installed. A new oiling machine will be purchased to replace the existing one and ensure more
consistent oiling of the bowling lanes. Planet Bowl will be given a makeover to improve players’ experience. We hope
that you will like the new look and find the new scoring system more interactive.

Reception/Main Lobby Renovation. The Clubhouse reception area and
the main lobby will be refreshed so members will find the reception area
more user-friendly and the lobby area more conducive for waiting or resting.
Renovation work will commence in end May and be completed by mid-July
2013. A temporary reception area will be set up at the Member’s Lounge,
beside the Arcade room. We seek your understanding for any inconvenience
caused during the renovation.
Function Room Makeover. We are in the midst of improving the ambience
of the function rooms with new doors, digitised display LED monitors, new
laminates to the door partitions and polished floors. These works will be
completed by early June 2013.

Treasure Cove Renovation. Treasure Cove upgrading is progressing as
scheduled and the official re-opening will be on Saturday, 25 May 2013. To
thank our members for the relocation during the renovation, a buffet lunch
will be catered for players after the official re-opening. The Dance Studio
will once again be available for ballet and other dance classes from 1 June
2013. Once again we thank the participants of the dance classes for their
understanding and patience.

Westwood Bowl Scoring System. The Westwood Bowl scoring system will be
upgraded with the latest Vector Plus scoring system by end of Apr 2013. A new
masking for the bowling lanes will also be installed.

Treehouse Toilets. Construction of the toilets at the treehouse is underway and is targeted to be completed by June

We will be renovating the Corporate Services Main Office to improve the staff working environment as the Club’s
staff strength has grown over the past decade. Come 10 May 2013, the Sports Department and Development and
Maintenance Department will be relocated to the room, formerly known as the Jade Room, beside the cooking
studio. The Corporate Services Main Office will be renovated in early June 2013 and is expected to be completed in
mid-August 2013. The Corporate Services staff will be temporarily relocated to temporary offices within Tessensohn
Clubhouse. We would like to assure members that throughout its renovation, the Corporate Services will continue to
provide the same quality of service to our members.

IT Update
Facilities Booking. The present Facilities Booking System which was developed 12 years ago will be upgraded to enable
members to make bookings across more internet browsers. This is expected to be fully operational by July 2013.
Sports Portal. The Club has also made further enhancement to the Sports Portal. The system enables Sports Liaison
Officers to auto–upload the whole team players’ registration details to the Sports Portal using an excel spreadsheet
instead of manually keying-in individual player’s details into the system.
Wireless Connectivity. The Club is further upgrading the wireless connectivity in its premises with free wireless internet
extended to all car park areas within the 2 Clubhouses by early May 2013. At the same time, the Club is also upgrading
the Telco 3G and voice network signal at the car park areas. We have already begun the upgrading work with M1 and will
be doing the same with Singtel soon.
Going Green. The Club has also gone paperless to cut down our carbon footprint. EXCO and Management members
attending meetings will simply download the minutes and staff papers for discussion into their tablets or laptops, rather
than use hard copies of discussion papers. Members are encouraged to support the green initiative by opting out of
Fusion’s hardcopy and download the e-book version online instead.
The Club is continually making efforts to improve its facilities and services for you, our members. We welcome more
members and public officers to make use of these improved facilities to organise your private parties or Ministry’s
corporate activities in our Club. We offer competitive pricing and event management expertise honed across the many
corporate events held at the Club, ranging from cooking classes, seminars, family days, treasure hunts, healthy lifestyle
days to swimming carnivals.

Stay Fighting Fit!
STAFF of the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) Singapore’s were
treated to a day of fun at Club CSC @ Bukit Batok on 9 Mar 2013. The
real stars were the family members of the AGC staff who spontaneously
boogied away at the zumba dancing session following their scenic nature
walk to Little Guilin.
The event, which was graced by Mr Steven Chong, Attorney-General and
Mrs Koh Juat Jong, Solicitor-General, was filled with laughter and joy as
colleagues had the opportunity to catch up and meet one another’s family
members.
The team-building activities also saw AGC staff in groups competing to
build the tallest structures from drinking straws. After a delicious lunch,
AGC staff and their families signed up for bowling, archery, cooking
demonstration and canvas bag painting. Said Mrs Clara Chan, mother of
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ms Jurena Chan: “This was a good opportunity
to spend time with my daughter and I’m happy to be able to put a face
to the colleagues my daughter often mentions, as well as to get to know
them better.”
The children also had a ball of a time with fun activities including facepainting and balloon-sculpting.
The day devoted to celebrating the AGC family with their families
certainly lifted the AGC team spirit and is a wonderful way of
appreciating staff and their loved ones.

CLUB CSC @ Tessensohn’s pool environs were decked
out in colourful banners, balloons and floats as a total of
250 staff from AVA, BCA, HDB, MND, NParks and URA
geared up for the start of MNDRC-Club HDB Swimming
Carnival. It was a lovely Saturday afternoon on 9 Mar
2013. At 1pm, the blast of the horn by Mr Patrick Bay
MNDRC Deputy Sports Chairman flagged off the first
activity and swimmers began surging forward at record
breaking speeds.
The carnival was thrilling from the start as participants
of all ages displayed their dexterity in freestyle, butterfly,
backstroke and even breaststroke at the pool. The day’s
highlights were the telematch races. It was all-smiles from
the audience watching the first game, “Pass The Ball”, where
teams had to drag a huge yellow ball float on the water’s
surface by swimming. The next game, “Croc Relay”, saw
kids excitedly trying to stay atop crocodile-shaped floats
while being pushed by teammates across the pool!
Despite the rain in the late afternoon, spirits were
not dampened. The fun and games coupled with
mouth-watering food of fried chicken, popcorn and
potong ice-cream truly made the participants’ day! An
entertaining emcee also charmed the audience with his
dazzling personality and jokes. Soon it was time for the
long-awaited lucky draw as well as prize presentation.
Jubilant winners were awarded medals and/or cash
vouchers. The swimming carnival came to an end
leaving participants in high spirits with a refreshing
swimming experience and a great family weekend.

42 kids tested their competitive spirits, put on their swimming caps and took part in the CSC Swimming Meet held
at Club CSC @ Tessensohn on Saturday 6 Apr 2013. The little ones budding to be the next Tao Li or Michael Phelps
glided down the pool in the breaststroke and freestyle categories, setting personal bests, breaking records and
having fun at the same time!
There was also something for the adults who turned up – shopping at an exciting bazaar selling a wide array of
goodies such as sports and health products, trinkets, fashion, delicious snacks, beverages and more!
Graced by General Manager of Civil Service Club, Mr Charlie Ng, who presented medals to the winning junior
swimmers, the all-rounded event ended with cheers, laughter and of course a sumptuous buffet
spread for everyone!

CALLING all runners! CSC Run By The Bay is back and it promises to be bigger
and more exciting! This year, a new 15km route is added for all long distance
enthusiasts out there. Together with the 5km and 10km runs, you will be taken
through a breathtaking panorama of Singapore’s iconic skyscrapers along the
waterfront promenade and passing by the Gardens By The Bay. With the slogan
“Run For A Hearty Health”, the Run aims to promote a healthy lifestyle amongst us.
The Open Category is open to all individuals above 16 years old. The Public
Service Category (Individual and Team events) is open only to Civil Servants
and officers working in government agencies. Besides these categories, don’t
forget to check out a new Fun Run category added just for you, your spouse and
children. CSC members and Public Officers get to enjoy special rates.

THE faces of swimmers who turned up for the Public Service Swimming Meet located at Club CSC
@ Tessensohn reflected excitement amidst loud cheers for teammates. Competition was very keen
as sterling swimmers sprinted breaststroke, freestyle, backstroke and butterfly styles displaying
dexterity in the pool. A total of 232 swimmers from 18 government agencies took part in the over
30 swimming events held at the Meet.
The swimmers from the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF)
dominated the women’s and men’s categories respectively. MINDEF also defeated defending
champion Singapore Sports Council and arch rival, MOE, seizing a sizzling overall victory in this
event held on Saturday, 6 Apr 2013! Mr Charlie Ng, General Manager of the Civil Service Club,
presented prizes to the winners.
This is the first year Desmond Yeap, manager for MINDEF’s swim team, joined the CSC’s swimming
meet. A Marine Systems Engineer who loves swimming since adolescence, Desmond supported
the team by “providing them with much needed logistic supplies. There was great team chemistry
as swimmers cheered for their teammates. The blood, sweat and tears put in to self-training by
individual teammates also paid off.” Thus fulfilling the teams’ goal: “Victory for TEAM MINDEF”!

MOE Stayed Atop The Basketball Game
THE Public Service 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament held over two Saturdays on 2 and 9 Mar 2013 at Club HDB attracted 52 teams
from 17 government agencies. The Ministry of Education topped the men’s category after defeating Ministry of Defence team in
a tenacious battle that set everybody’s adrenaline pumping. The final of the Women’s Category was usually dominated by MOE
but People’s Association (PA) team caused a major stir by beating MOE in a tightly fought match. Yet, having accumulated the
most points from two categories, MOE emerged as the overall champion!
Teo Siang Yang, MOE’s basketball convenor, said that his teams “encountered
strong opponents this year and he attributed the wins to valuable contributions of players
and captains. He particularly mentioned Tang Ching Yun, captain of the women’s teams
as well as Lim Jie Sheng and Ng Yeow Hui, captains of the men’s teams.
Mr Teo started playing basketball since he was in Primary three and it was love at
first ‘try’. Having joined CSC’s basketball tournaments for 10 years, he engages his love
for the sport in weekly sessions with committed players creating a deep network and
fostering positive comradeship amongst them.

Singapore Power Powered The Football Field
THE Public Service 11-A-Side Football Tournament saw 28 teams from 21 government agencies gather at St Wilfrid Field
on 16 and 17 Mar 2013. By 19 Mar 2013, after a two-day football battle, four teams were left vying for the top four spots. In

eventually scored a triumphant goal! MOE Team 2 came in third and Ministry of Home Affairs came in fourth.
Seven years ago, SPL formed their football team that trained weekly at the
Singapore Power Club. Abdul Rashid Bin Latip, SPL’s convenor used to be one
of them. Now as team manager, he said “the pressure always existed before
and during the games but the best moment for him was when (the team) won”.
He added that “the strong bond between players coupled with ardent familial
support made victory possible”.
Mohamed Amin, SPL team captain, also shared that the sport is a good
way to “keep fit and make lifelong friends”. As a Liverpool fan, Mr Amin lives by

MINDEF Takes The Reins Of Badminton
61 teams from 26 government agencies took part in the Public Service Badminton
Tournament held from 25 Feb to 22 Mar 2013. Shuttlecocks whizzed across
badminton courts at Tessensohn Clubhouse where the Ministry of Defence
(MINDEF) teams launched an assault to defend their title. In the end, MINDEF
topped the men, men’s senior and men’s active agers categories, clinching a record!
breaking overall championship for the 12th consecutive time! Ministry of Education

“Leave no man behind where every player plays an integral part by focusing
on winning every game.” This was MINDEF’s team philosophy. It served them in good stead and under the guidance

coached by him until they were up to competitive levels. In fact, “training for the tournament started earlier in the year to
make up for the festive break”. Regular gatherings organised also culminated in strong camaraderie resulting in a familial
team spirit.

Three Cheers For MOE Chess Champions!
THE training put in by participants making up 16 teams from 13 government
agencies paid off at the Public Service Chess Competition held at the
Tessensohn Clubhouse on Saturday, 2 Mar 2013.

participation while MOH came in third.
MOE’s Chess convenor, Francis Lee commended “MOH and NUS for putting up a good fight. It was not easy but
the team pulled it through.” He credited the captain of MOE’s first team, “Junior Tay, who did a good job organising them
according to their strengths.” MOE’s chess players are a closely-knitted circle who often play competitive chess and
practice playing it online. As Mr Lee concludes, “Chess was the reason they often gather for chit chats, creating bonds of
friendship amongst members outside work.”

MHA Dominates The Sepaktakraw Court!
IT was amazing watching players do gravity-defying kicks to manoeuvre the ball
at the Public Service Sepaktakraw Inter-Regu and Inter-Team tournaments held
at the PERSES Centre of Excellence on 23 Feb 2013 and 3 Mar 2013 respectively.

Both events saw a close fight between powerhouse teams from Ministry of
Home Affairs (MHA) and Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR). In
the finals, MHA played well, crushed MEWR and successfully kept their title; capturing the crown again!
Mohamed Riduan, MHA’s Sepaktakraw convenor, felt “managers were instrumental in motivating the teams with
inspiration and strategy”. One of them is Ariffin Abd Wahab. Age is not a limit for the 51-year-old father of 3 who still
performed at peak playing the position of server and nationally representing Singapore in the game. Inspiring many
teammates, he advises all to start training young and practice yoga for a better performance in Sepaktakraw.

Fun Health Walks With Fabulous Views
WALKERS of all ages from government agencies got on the road to health in recent
walks organised by the Club! In the afternoon of Thursday, 28 Feb 2013, attendees
met at the Zig Zag Point in MacRitchie Reservoir Park for a mass aerobic workout.
Flagged off by CSC Executive Member Mr Loh Yuh Por, they embarked on a
5km boardwalk filled with fresh air and lush flora or fauna by the water’s edge. At
5.45pm, the walk ended and prizes were given away at the lucky draw!
On Tuesday, 26 Mar 2013, walkers who prefer the urban jungle were
treated to a panoramic view of Singapore’s iconic structures at the Marina Bay.
Participants gathered at the Event Square for an upbeat warming up session
before CSC Executive Committee Member Dr Koh Yang Huang, flagged off the
event. The 4km walk along the waterfront promenade, ended in the evening
where winners got to walk away with great prizes. All in all, the two walks,
attracting a total of over 400 participants, were a good way to encourage
a healthy lifestyle while having a good time bonding with their fellow
colleagues!
