CPHS MISSION STATEMENT I n CPHS Rocks at the Battle of the Bands 2 The Dangers of Cheese 4 Katy Perry’s New Albulm 7 Cyberspace Considerations 8 October The mission of Cliffside Park High School is to provide a safe, academically focused environment within our culturally diverse community. We will challenge each student to confidently achieve his or her educational and personal goals as well as acquire the work and social skills essential to a productive member of society. Volume 1I, Issue 1I Cliffside Park Courier Halloween isn’t just for little kids By Mina Lisanin Children are out having the time of their life trick or treating, parents are separating the good candy from the bad and sneaking some), and you‘re stuck at home, wondering how to turn your boring night into an unforgettable Hallows Eve. Many teenagers today have grown out of the phase of trick or treating and are looking for something more exciting to do. Here are some events Halloween 2010 has to offer those who feel like Halloween is a holiday for children. If you get a thrill from jumping out of your skin, and can handle your heart thumping from the heights, then Six Flags Fright Fest is the place to be. This year‘s Fright Fest includes unique mazes, haunted houses, tons of fake blood and as always, outstanding rollercoaster rides. Fright Fest will only be around for the weekends in October and the admission rates vary. Another great hit is the Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village, New York. The costumed masses can join in the nation‘s most wildly creative event, which includes different kinds of music, dancers, and artists. For teens who feel that they are too old for rides and parades, there are a few (semi-local) choices to feel their blood chill. New York City‘s Blood Manor is guaranteed to make your hair stand on end with over 5,000 square feet of terror. Patrons are asked to purchase tickets in advance if they want to get in between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. on Halloween night. Also, if transportation isn‘t a problem, the Forest of Fear in Tuxedo, New York is a carnival of horror and fright. If you're not the going out type, you can always take in a horror film with a few close friends. Some good suggestions include Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street Halloween, or The Saw Series. Also for lovers of horror on the silver screen—this weekend is also The Chiller Theatre expo providing attendees a chance to meet some of their favorite horror and sci-fi stars. The event is held yearly in Parsippany, NJ. These are only a few of the things you can do if you're too old to be satiated by candy and masks, so get out there and have a safe and happy Halloween! This Month In Horror Birthdays of The USA’s Worst Monsters February 28, 1960 Richard Ramirez, the ―Night Stalker‖, haunted Los Angeles in the 1980‘s. March 17, 1942 John Wayne Gacy is known as the ―Killer Clown‖ for the murder of 33 men most of whom he buried on his property while dressing as a clown for fundraising in his area. June 1, 1953 David Berkowitz (Son of Sam) terrorized New York city for thirteen months from ‗76 to ‗77. August 27, 1906 Ed Gain, the inspiration for Psycho, Leatherface, and Buffalo Bill, was a cannibal in the 1950‘s. November 12, 1934 Charles Manson inspired his ―family‖ to kill and torture strangers. November 24, 1946 Ted Bundy, an attractive law student, stalked and murdered young women from ‗74 to ‗78 Compiled from Internet 2 School News CPHS gets tech Savvy By Arif Khalil CPHS ROCKS!!! By Mike Yi With the media and school district suffering from massive budget cuts and loss of staff, many may wonder why thirty more Promethean Boards are being installed in classrooms. No, teachers did not donate kidneys to get tech forward, it was a technology grant aimed at bringing CPHS into the 20th century. A grant is external funding from companies and organizations often with a specific aim to assist school districts. Since the point of this grant was technology, why did the district choose Promethean Boards? The Promethean Boards ―give an alternative way of learning,‖ according to Mr. Fabiano. Learning can be more accurate and fun, as students see education ―move‖ on a screen. Tutorial videos and lessons can be watched on screen and more information can be provided with the use of online sources. The Promethean Boards may also be used to treat students to relevant films on the big screen. The boards will also be very helpful for the teachers by giving them the opportunity to integrate the internet and computer programs into their lessons. Those teachers without a classroom can also save time by having their notes and assignments loaded onto the boards. The Promethean Boards are not entirely new to the school, however. They are used very often in the Math Department. Mr. Rappaport, uses the Promethean Board to help teach his lessons by utilizing a graphing program to illustrate the points in class. He also uses the board for the Robotics team, to load and apply software for the robot. In marketing class with Mrs. Menafra, after lots of note taking, students are able to watch presentations on the board, combining entertainment and education for the class. Promethean Boards bring the world into the classroom and infuse each lesson with life. With a line of amps spewing punk, rock and ska, dimmed lights and a throng of fans, the cafeteria was transformed at last Thursday night‘s ―Battle‖ of the Bands. Organized by Mr. Rappaport and Mr. Nelson, five bands took the stage and rocked the crowds, bringing in plenty of proceeds for the band and chorus. The Faculty Band opened the evening, highlighting the skills of Mr. Rappaport on the mic, Mr. Nelson on the drums and Mr. Fogerty on the bass. Next up were the Smexies, whose energy complimented that of The Faculty Band, while adding a hip hop beat. Lead guitarist, Allen Herrera jammed onstage with the help of Scott Lind who brought some humor to the set and Damien Guach who sang. ―Allen has a gift for the guitar, he truly rips up the stage,‖ said fan John Funez. The Outback Outlaws took the stage next with a mixture of classic hits. Bert Palummeri Jorge Martinez brought out tunes made famous by Nirvana, Brand New, and Green Day had the crowd singing and dancing along with some of their favorites. Also the band No Nose Goes played terrific with Ana Amaral at vocal, Jin Young on guitar, Shant Kouganjin on bass and Robert Blanco, our very own class president, on keyboard. ―It was the first time I‘d ever skanked, and I loved it,‖ said Brittany Stamoulis of their ska set. Fortune Favors the Brave finished off the night by turning the roof upside town and dropping the jaws of their fans. Lead guitarist Brian Antolo shredded the guitar giving students something to talk about on their way home. ―It was a great success and everyone had a lot of fun,‖ Mr. Rappaport said of the evening. The night raised $1400. The First Annual Fall Family Fun Day By The first annual Fall Family Fun Day took place on the high school field on Saturday, October 23. The classes of 2012 and 2013 joined forces and made a great day for both little and big kids. They were joined by the drama club, culinary artists, the marching band, face painters, the Parent Awareness Group, and the Class of 2011. Entire families were able to join in the festivities on the field among imported decorations of hay and leaves that truly showed the spirit of fall. The field was filled with many exciting things to do. For the younger kids, there was a free scavenger hunt, with little treats and prizes hidden in a giant leaf pile for them to discover. In addition, there were carnival games for them to play. There were also Halloween-related activities including pumpkin painting and a fall themed family photo. Children lined up for face painting by Tania Boghossian and Israel Fabre. Attendees with a child inside were certainly not left out. There were duck races, tricky tray prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Possibly the most exciting event for all was the dunk tank, which gave students, children and alumni a chance to get Ms. Woodley, Mr. Bargna, Mr. Fucci, Coach Cambareri, or school alumni Jeff De la Fuente all wet. They do always say that revenge is a dish best served cold—just like the water the volunteers were plunged into. There were also many sweet treats including creamy pumpkin pie, caramel apples, and apple pie available for purchase thanks to the culinary stand, as well as drinks from the drama club. For those who didn‘t want a risk, Halloween cauldrons were sold by the Parent Awareness Group to benefit Project Graduation. Overall, it was a successful dayfilled that brought families together. Principal’s Corner The weather in the beginning of October was unreasonably warm, but as each day passed we watched the leaves turn from green to orange to brown. Some things we have no control over, but others we do. The first marking period will soon be over and report cards will be distributed. Report cards are sent home to parents/ guardians but the report card needs to be looked at by the student to determine where improvement is needed and where performance is satisfactory. Our school has a great deal to offer anyone willing to make an effort to succeed. This means setting priorities, looking to the future, taking responsibility, and planning. Once these are addressed, stick to them and don’t let other people or interests turn you away from your goals. For Seniors this includes selecting and filling out college applications and setting a goal as to when to send them– don’t procrastinate! To all, remember we are Cliffside Park High School and we are here to help each other. I wish all a successful school year. G.J. Fabiano 4 This Month in Health What will your eye color be this Halloween? By Caitlin Lyons It‘s October again and Halloween is just around the corner. Many teens and adults like to purchase nonprescription contact lenses for this holiday to change their eye color or give them a spooky look, but they often do not realize what their money is really going towards. Inflammation, pain, serious infections, and permanent vision loss are just a few of the many risks that come with over-the-counter contact lenses. All types of decorative contacts can be purchased easily at stores or on the internet for cheap prices which attract large amounts of customers each year. They are often described as fashion accessories and read ―one size fits all.‖ This claim is FALSE. Doctors suggest getting an eye fitting and a prescription before purchasing any contact lenses. No contact should be purchased without consulting a physician first. Improper fits can scratch the eye and lead to blood vessel growth in the cornea. Other risks include corneal ulcers, corneal abrasion, vision impairment, and blindness. Using decorative lenses isn‘t the problem here. The problem is that many people go about it the wrong way, which can be very dangerous and carry serious consequences. If you or someone you know would like to purchase decorative lenses, remember to consult with your doctor before purchasing any without a prescription. Source: fda.gov Healthy Eating By Alivia Sohm There are many people who are unhappy about their appearance because of their weight. The main cause of this problem is unhealthy eating habits— something under the control of the individual. Simple choices can have lasting affects on our bodies for good and for bad. Often people eat three large meals a day, but it is recommended to eat five smaller meals each day. This is beneficial because your metabolism breaks down the food more rapidly, and effectively. The most important meal of the day is breakfast. The reason we call it this is because it means to break the fast created while sleeping. Breakfast kick starts the metabolism and gives a person energy throughout the day. During the day, many are tempted to eat fast food. Keep in mind that occasionally fast food is okay. Just remember that getting the kids meal is just as satisfying as getting the deluxe. When offered extra sauces, deny them simply because they are full of man-made sugars, which are unhealthy. Artificial sugars are bad for you because they are difficult for the body to break down, while natural sugars are easily broken down. Eating meat is a good the way to go. It contains protein that builds muscle, and repairs body tissues. Protein produces enzymes, hormones, and helps resist diseases. Fiber products such as fruits, vegetables, cereals, grains, and pasta help flush the toxins inside your body. At night, it is best not to eat within the few hours before going to sleep. This is because your body will store food as fat instead of using it as energy. Exercising or even going out for a walk after eating will help you digest your food properly. ―Eating healthy could be the start of something new. Remember to always think about what you eat and how it will affect you after you have eaten it. Chose dietary and reasonable eating habits and consider all that they can do for you,‖ said Mr. Woods. A Unique Tradition By Patricia Hoyos With gaunt actresses and models the focus of much of our media, American children learn that when it comes to your body, the fitter or thinner, the better. While in most places of the world women are trying out the newest diet in hopes of looking thinner, more beautiful or achieving optimal health, Mauritanian women are doing the exact opposite. The Mauritanian tradition, ―leblouh,‖ dictates that heavier women are more beautiful than their slim counterparts. This has led to a weight hierarchy that equates weight to wealth, social status and attractiveness. Most Mauritarian families start to forcibly feed their young girls at an early age, punishing them when they do not finish their food. "Personally, I do believe that fattening girls is more than a necessity. Slim girls bring shame to their families and even their tribes as well. It's also difficult for them to attract men's eyes in our society," said 55-year-old Achetou Mint Taleb, a native to the Mauritanian area. The tradition, however, is lessening throughout families in Mauritania due to the realization of the consequences affiliated with weight gain. Problems including heart disease, type II diabetes, cancers, hypertension, stroke, sleep apnea, respiratory issues and osteoarthritis stem from being overweight. In our part of the world, health professionals are attempting to promote healthy figures in advertising and media in order to reduce rates of anorexia and bulimia. Being too thin can cause heart problems, loss of bone density, kidney failure, hair loss, and dental problems. No matter the body image exalted by a culture, there are consequences for its members, but it seems that in terms of weight—the middle is better. Sources: www.cnn.com www.cdc.gov This Month in Health 5 “Cheese,” The New Drug By Gabriela Barrera A new danger is on the rise in Texas, cheese. ―Cheese‖ is the nickname for a popular new drug that has already taken the lives of teenagers. The drug was first reported in Dallas where it has taken the lives of twentyone teenagers over the past two years and is working its way into northern Texas schools. The ―Cheese Heroin‖ is made up of black tar Mexican heroin mixed with medications that contain the antihistamine diphenhydramine, found in some medications like Tylenol PM. The effects of the heroin and the night time cold medicine combined make it deadly for anyone, especially teenagers. The effects of the drug include euphoria, disorientation, lethargy, sleepiness, and hunger. ―A double whammy, you‘re getting two downers at once. If you take the body and you start slowing everything down everything inside your body, eventually, you‘re going to slow down the heart until it stops, and when it stops you‘re dead.‖ says Dallas police detective Monty Moncibals. Authorities are keeping an eye on the drug to make sure that it does not spread to other cities says Steve Robertson, a special agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Washington. ―Cheese‖ was given its name for the yellow color that is produced from the mix of the drugs. It sells cheaply for $2 which makes it accessible for anyone interested in trying the drug. The name ―Cheese‖ makes it easy for dealers to sell the drug to a younger clientele since it masks the potential dangers that come with the usage of the drug. The spread of this drug is cautiously being watched by the police departments so that it does not take the lives of other adolescents across the country. Source: www.cnn.com Not Everybody Plans on Getting the Flu Shot By Barbara De Barros The flu vaccine claims to be 7090% effective. Even so, many Americans say their children will not be getting the flu shot this year. New surveys show that about 43% of Americans will not be getting the vaccine this year, regardless of last year‘s H1N1 flu outbreak. Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, director of the Center of Disease Control and Prevention said, ―Flu is serious. Every year, millions of people get sick; more than 200,000 people are hospitalized and thousands of people die from influenza.‖ He suggests that everyone over the age of 6 months get a flu shot. Doctors say children should definitely get the flu shot because they are exposed to the flu the most. Therefore, they should not only get vaccinated so they don‘t catch the flu, but so that they won‘t spread it to others. Flu experts note that most of those who refuse to get the vaccine for themselves or their children have fallen for myths about the shot. Many believe that the flu shot is dangerous. Some Americans believe that the vaccine protects against only one strain of the flu, while it really protects three, while others take comfort in their belief that washing your hands is just as effective as the shot. Doctors encourage getting it and assure that these myths are false. In a separate survey, 90%of doctors participating in one survey said they planned to get vaccinated while less than 2% said they would not . The flu shot is an opportunity to avoid the aches, pains and dangers of the flu, which makes it strange that so many people resist using it to their benefit. Teen Pregnancy Is On The Rise By Rocio Araneda Some teens are polishing up their homework at 7 am, some are sleeping, others are being dragged out of bed by their parents, and some are taking care of their own child. Teen pregnancy is reaching epidemic proportions across the country.. Teen pregnancy is rising for the first time in many years. Every year, 3 out of 10 girls in the U.S get pregnant unintentionally. It is still too soon to predict if this generation will match the baby boom in the late 1980s, and early 1990s, but experts say that we‘re well on our way to match the birth rates. Often parents blame television. MTV‘s hit show Teen Mom shows the difficulties in being a teenage parent, but it also shows the teens getting through their struggles. These parents think that these role models will lead their child to believe, ―if they can get through it so can I,‖ and fear their child will not practice safe sexual intercourse as a result. New studies show that teen pregnancy is on the rise due to the abstinence-only sex education classes. The CDC reveals that almost all U.S. teens have had a proper sex education class, but only two thirds have been taught birth control methods. The abstinence only sex education class teaches only how to practice abstinence; they do not teach how to use contraception. The Clinton administration began financing these programs, which studies show, did not work and spent $150 million every year on the program. The Obama administration is creating a new sex-ed program that has been proven to prevent pregnancy, and claims to have a more effective approach for teens. Whether the cause for the rise in teen pregnancy is due to television or a lack of knowledge, when it comes to practicing safe sex, all experts agree that teens should try and talk to their parents or a trusted adult about their sexual choices. Source: www.cdc.com 6 World View Coincidences or Miracles? By Monica Olveira Hell might have not been very different from this place. As tons of rocks crashed down the ramps of a Chilean mine over two months ago, the deafening thunder that filled the pitch-black galleries and the endless blinding clouds of thick dust made it clear to the 33 men that escaping from this horror would be anything but easy. There was no way out and no means of communication with the rest of the world, so they had to stick together hoping that rescuers would reach them before it was too late. As everybody knows by now, in spite of the fact that the rescue took 70 long days, it was an exceptional success. What many people are not aware of, however, is the strange coincidence regarding the number 33 throughout this disaster: Roman Catholic Chileans believe that Jesus Christ was 33 when he died, making the number significant to the 33 men trapped inside. The number appeared again when it took 33 days to drill the shaft to rescue them. One of the men had been married for 33 years and the men were rescued on 10/13/10—see the significance? There is also the story of the white butterfly. This miraculous creature appeared in front of two miners exactly when the collapse took place, while they were driving down the ramp of the mine at 500 meters deep. Local farmers believe that it is a good omen to come across a white animal in the dark. Whether the superstition is true or not, the two men believe that they were saved by this mysterious butterfly, since they stopped to take a closer look at it, avoiding the tumbling rocks of the initial collapse. These may be more than just pure coincidences. Can a simple number have special powers? Can a lost and fragile butterfly contain the power to save lives? Source: associatedcontent.com Is Spray-On Clothing, Fashion's Future? By Susan O. Lobo Technology has taken another step forward. Spanish fashion designer Manel Torres developed the world's first spray-on clothing. Manel Torres joined together with the scientists at Imperial College London to create the clothing that could be washed and worn again. The spray contains short fibers that are mixed with a solvent, making it possible for it to be sprayed through high-pressure spray gun. The fibers are synthesized with polymers that combine them to make a fabric. The texture of the fabric change by using wool, linen or acrylic fibers. The product is not yet flawless; however, the fabric is cold when spraying it on to the skin. "I really wanted to make a futuristic, seamless, quick and comfortable material," said Torres. "In my quest to produce this kind of fabric, I ended up returning to the principles of the earliest textiles.‖ Mr. Torres‘ creation has also called for him to pair up with engineer, Paul Luckman. They plan to launch a new company called Fabrican Ltd. The company wishes to also lead in the invention of other products such as spray-on bandages, hygiene wipes, and upholstery for cars and furniture. ―The fashion application of spray-on fabric is a great way of advertising the concept, but there are also new applications for the medical, transport and chemical industries," said Luckman. "For example, the spray-on fabric may be produced and kept in a sterilized can, which could be perfect for providing spray-on bandages without applying any pressure for soothing burnt skin, or delivering medicines directly to a wound." The idea of clothes in a can makes you think about how advanced in technology the world is becoming. You never really know what they are going to invent next. Source: newscientist.com More Than Bodies Buried in Manhattan Cemetery By CJ Barone Eight bricks of military grade explosives were found at historic Marble Cemetery on the Lower East Side of New York City, on October 11, 2010. The explosives were found wrapped in a garbage bag, which protected it from the weather. No detonator caps or wires were found which would have made the bricks of C-4 unstable and dangerous. C-4 is a military grade explosive more potent than TNT, but more stable. Even a shot from a gun will not cause detonation without proper wiring and blasting caps. When authorities retrieved the materials, they were brittle, meaning that they had been at the cemetery for an extended period. A year ago, an employee found unearthed the bag containing the explosives, but did not alert authorities or the management. Even when a caretaker rediscovered the package, police were not immediately informed. This was not assumed to be an act of terrorism, but note written in chalk was also found on a nearby sidewalk that read, ―I really hope one of you find this,‖ with an arrow pointing into the cemetery. Officials are investigating several groups including Hell‘s Angels, whose headquarters are just several steps away on East Third Street. In post 9/11 times, it is surprising how easily something like this can slip through the cracks, especially in Manhattan. Luckily, once police were informed they were able to retrieve the explosives and ensure the safety of the citizens who reside in the area. The New York City Marble Cemetery is a historic landmark, and it is usually closed off to the public except for occasional tours. The entire area was shut down until police could search the area. Entertainment 7 From one of the Boys, to a Teenage dream By Samantha Fagan A lot of “likes” for The Social Network By Olaolu Emmanuel Facebook has gone from the World Wide Web to the big screen in this year‘s hottest movie The Social Network. The new movie about the creation of Facebook has users and others alike going crazy for such a powerful and well written movie. The movie, which is based on Mark Zuckerberg‘s steps to creating a global social network and explains how he became the youngest billionaire in history, has hit 4.2 billion in its first ten days at the theaters. The movie continues to rise to the top of the box office; however the road to fame and fortune was not so easy for Zuckerberg. Facebook‘s, and the film‘s, hero went through many legal and personal problems, but he did not waver and his reward was great. He was a college undergrad with an idea, and with his brains and the help of friends he was able to make his dream a reality. Throughout the movie he has many allies, but some turn into enemies who go as far as suing him for stealing what they believe to be their idea. The movie asks questions regarding whether or not Mark should have all of the fame and fortune that he has now. Such debates have even made it onto the Today Show. Zuckerberg had to pay millions to compensate for the accusations, but with Facebook‘s 500+ million users it is obvious that the lawsuits have not affected him much financially. The movie was an exciting and interesting and has rightfully earned its spot at the top. Katy Perry‘s new album, ―Teenage Dream,‖ is cute, catchy, and as sweet as cotton candy. In the album, which was released August 24th, Katy goes from being ―One of the Boys‖, to a daisy duke wearing ―California Gurl‖. The inspiration behind the album came from Katy‘s hometown of Santa Barbara, California. Perry believes that you can‘t run from where you came from, no matter where that may be. ―I love the vibe that Santa Barbara gives off and I wanted to really tap into the purity of my childhood and that feeling,‖ stated the twotime Grammy nominated pop star. ―Teenage Dream,‖ is a lot different from Katy Perry‘s 2008 album, ―One of the Boys.‖ ―One of the Boys‖ had a more edgy rock and roll side to it, whereas the new album is soft and sweet. The first album was Katy‘s way of introducing herself to the music industry and to the people who are now her fans. She wrote her songs, and described exactly what she was feeling; letting everything she had on her mind flow into the music. ―Teenage Dream‖, on the other hand, is more laid-back, and it makes you want to get up and move. ―Teenage Dream‖ is extremely different from ―One of the Boys,‖ but in a good way. Apps that apply By Jennifer Mata Apps! They are everywhere and you just can‘t avoid them! They can entertain you when you need something to do, but they can also help! Not all apps are useless. The App Market also carries what adults would call useful apps, such as the apps that help you study like Assignments for IPhone or CoursePro for Droid, which allows users to track and add work for multiple classes or IFlipr Flashcards (or StudyDroid) which creates virtual flash cards that can keep up with the on the go student and aid with test The first single from ―Teenage Dream,‖ is ―California Gurls,‖ one of the anthems for the summer of 2010. This song makes listeners want to get up and move, which is exactly what Perry, was aiming for. She wanted people to dance more. Other catchy, uplifting songs from the album are, ―Last Friday Night [T.G.I.F],‖ ―Hummingbird Heartbeat,‖ and ―Peacock‖ all of which are great party songs you will keep singing over and over. The title track, ―Teenage Dream,‖ is passionate, and will make teenage girls or boys realize that their teenage years are golden. ―I called the album ‗Teenage Dream‘ because I feel like I will always want to be that pin-up poster,‖ says Katy. ―I want to be in everybody‘s dreams at all times until I get to Liz Taylor‘s age when I won‘t be in dreams anymore but just a diva.‖ ―Teenage Dream‖ is great album, but with less of an edge than 2008‘s ―One of the Boys.‖ This album will move you both physically and emotionally, with the songs written by Katy Perry herself. ―Teenage Dream‖ would be a great buy for all those who like Katy Perry‘s whimsical, irresistible pop songs. preparation as well as learning basics like vocabulary. School is not the only place that apps can be of assistance, however. MyPanic will send GPS coordinates to emergency services or contacts. Safety Button will send distress text or email or sound an alarm. IFirstAid Lite offers information and instructions to help save a life. (Similar apps are on Droid too.) With all the capabilities of phones these days, consumers are left wondering whether they will take the place of our wallets too. Phones are already in the works with the ability to make purchases around the globe and even mass transit. 8 Student Voices When Privacy Goes Viral By Robert Blanco In the days following the death of the Rutgers University student, Tyler Clementi, millions of people were left wondering what would push this 18year-old Rutgers student to commit suicide? The answer is connected to the invasion of his privacy. Whether there is something that you do not want people to see about you or you just find a comfort in having something about yourself that no one else knows, when privacy is invaded, people often feel violated. These feelings can result in embarrassment, paranoia, or even psychological problems or suicide. Privacy is a very important thing to most people. However, as the years go by, privacy is becoming rare. It takes instances such as this one to then reexamine our boundaries. Technologies like digital and web cameras, cell phones, and flash drives make it easy to capture audio, video, or text that could be devastating to another person‘s life. Most of the Facebook population has been tagged in one photo or another, but do the taggers ever consider what they are linking to the person‘s name? Often, unfortunately, the answer is no. This problem goes even further when one considers what they put into the world about themselves. Raunchy , rude and sometimes reprehensible pictures and messages go out daily without concern for the audience that may gain access to them (both on the net and on phones). This has inspired colleges and employers to begin searching the net regarding applicants in order to get another view of them. While this may dissuade some users from inappropriate information, it is more important that everyone consider who they show themselves to be both in person and on the net, then pass the same standards of courtesy on to their friends. The tragedy of Tyler Clementi occurred due to disregard for his privacy, but hopefully his example will make people think twice about what they reveal of themselves and their friends. Cyber-Bulling By Matthew Hall Fad or Faux Pas? By Michelle Diaz Not too many years ago, bullies were inhabitants of the school yard that may have caused trouble for teens and teachers alike, but were left behind when the target got home, but not today. Due to social networking including Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter, teens have begun to live online and just like in the real world, there are dangers. Internet users are often warned about ―online predators‖ who seek personal information in order to exploit and, at times, harm children and teens, but is ―stranger danger‖ the rule to keep them safe? From 2000 to 2010, the larger (and faster growing) threat has become cyber-bulling. By logging onto the internet, users invite bullies into their lives and homes making the schoolyard troubles even more grave. Cyber-bulling is when an individual or group of people use technology such as social networks, text messaging, emails, or IM with the intent to cause harm to another's feelings and/or character. Unlike face to face bullying, cyber-bulling doesn't end at three o'clock like school does; it can be a twentyfour hour ordeal. Most people use the internet to bully because they either believe it isn‘t a "big deal", or they embrace the anonymity of cyber-space. The reality is that though the bully may not see it as a big deal, it is and it will have consequences. Any type of bullying has a lasting effect on the victim. The victim may internalize their pain because unlike the bathroom walls of old, the internet can be viewed by the world. This can lead to depression, lashing out physically or by continuing the cycle of abuse or even doing harm to oneself. Cyber-bulling is, and will forever be present as long as the internet is around, but it can be reduced if teens take the initiative to show that it is wrong through their postings and personal choices. Victims and witnesses of cyber-bullying are responsible for informing people in power to help end this epidemic. The nation‘s fascination with New Jersey has caused new trends to develop. Shows such as ―Jerseylicous:‖, ―Cake Boss‖, ―Jersey Couture‖, ―The Real House Wives of New Jersey‖, ―Quintuplets‖, and the national favorite, ―Jersey Shore‖ all highlight NJ ‗s Style for good and bad. One of the major implications of these shows is on fashion, particularly for New Jersey‘s boys who have picked up the need to prick up their hair with gel. Though the substance might seem harmless, overuse can be quite dangerous. How do you know when it‘s too much? 1. If items stick to your hair in the morning. 2. If you develop white flakes in your hair, that fall like snow when you itch your head. 3. If your hair is immobile in the wind. 4. If your hair only moves in unison. 5. If you have injured yourself or others on the points of your hair. There are many signs, so if you are into this fad, check yourself for these before leaving the house or you may risk embarrassment or committing a serious fashion violation. While humorous, we cannot ignore the more grave consequences, and that is to you and your mane. The contents of gel can cause allergic reactions, dandruff and (in extreme cases) hair loss or affect your body‘s fertility or liver/kidney function. If you must use gel to perk up your locks, aim for HERBAL hair products instead of ones rife with chemical fillers. There are many 100% natural gels which will not only prevent hair loss, they will promote growth instead. Despite the major defects, if you can learn to use it properly, you could do some pretty cool things. Source: ezinearticles.com And Then Some... Learning to Run the World By Maritza Zululga Over the Summer, The Fairview American legion, the Sons of American legion, and the Fairview Lions club sponsored five young men to attend Boys State at Rider University. Boys State is a week long program aimed at teaching students how the government functions as well as giving them an opportunity to try their hand at it. The boys were chosen based on achievements and academics. Umberto Palazzo, Anthony Tripodi, Jonathan Funez, Carmine Punuccio, and Lacin Koro described the experience as ―a week that shaped a lifetime.‖ Their day started at 6 a.m. when they woke-up, got dressed in uniforms and counted off before breakfast. Each day was filled with lectures, seminars, Quote of the Month By Shakira Perez “A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life.” -Muhammad Ali As we grow older, we make mistakes, we cry, and we laugh and we grow wiser. . Every year of our existence, there is another year of lessons to be learned through tough times and good times. and work on their mock government. Among the lecturers was New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez whose input greatly affected the attendees. A terrorism seminar and a World War I video presentation were also noted by the boys as being significant parts of their experience. When asked if they would recommend Boys State to underclassmen, t h e y unanimously replied y e s . ―Beyond the basics of government, it gave us the opportunity to learn how to interact with peers for a common goal,‖ one boy said. They also mentioned how they would feel comfortable going back a second time to get more involved. In October, the attendees gave a presentation regarding their experiences to The Fairview American Legion, post 365, Sons of American Legion, post 395, and the Fairview Lions club in thanks for the opportunity to be a part of the program. Life‘s difficulties are not meant to put us down, they are meant to bring us up and make sure we don‘t fall again. Every year our perspective on the world changes, because of the experiences we have faced. The way one views the world at twenty, should not be the same as at fifty. All of the years in between are full of opportunities that change one‘s perspective on the world. If one‘s perspective is inflexible, then throughout their whole life, they will have learned nothing—and what‘s the point in that? 9 Lifesavers in Cliffside Park High School By Sarah Jenaban At the Fairview Mayor and Council meeting, the Fairview Police Department honored local residents with Civilian Life Saving Service Awards. On Tuesday, September 21, 2010 the awards were given to local residents who had helped or assisted others in order to save a life. Two members of Cliffside Park High School‘s population were honored. Freshman Faiz Haddabeh was honored for saving the life of a fellow student last year as an 8th grader at Lincoln School in Fairview. During his lunch period, food obstructed a student‘s airway. Faiz reacted immediately to the situation and performed the Heimlich maneuver on the choking student, freeing the stuck piece of food from the other boy‘s airway. Faiz was unable to attend the presentation at the Mayor and Council meeting, so Fairview Deputy Police Chief Frank Del Vecchio came to CPHS and along with Mr. Fabiano, Mr. Shelley, and Mr. Schmitt, presented Faiz with his award in Mr. Rappaport‘s 5th period Math Class. Our Vice Principal, Mr. Schmitt, also saved the life of an individual. Outside of his home, his neighbor was having an asthma attack and stopped breathing. Mr. Schmitt dialed 911 and performed CPR on the individual until paramedics arrived. The ambulance came and performed A.E.D. which detected an abnormal heart rhythm. The medics gave the woman defibrillation (electric shock) to steady her heartbeat. Before leaving the scene, the woman was breathing normally, but was still in need of hospital care. She‘s grateful that Mr. Schmitt saved her life. He received an award on October 15, 2009. Congratulations to the heroes of CPHS, freshman Faiz Haddabeh and our Vice Principal Mr. Schmitt.
