EXALTED RULER’S MESSAGE
So goes by the month of May, with all of the ups and downs that came with it. I
think it is safe to say I am glad to see it go. The one good thing that we have to
report to the membership is that we are seeing an end to our kitchen reconstruction
project. While not completely finished yet, we will be able to service all of our
planned events with minimal difficulties. We hope to be back to our normal
operation by the time you receive this newsletter in mid June. At that time we will
have a fully functional kitchen with a brand new chef, enabling us to offer first
class service to our membership. We were not able to come to agreement on certain
Lou Sottnick, Exalted Ruler
issues with our current cook who resigned. We are confident that this action will be
a benefit to the operation of our food service program.
There have been some other changes implemented in our Lodge social quarters recently including bar prices,
glass sizes and how we serve our drinks. These decisions are made by our House Committee, who as part of our
by-laws has complete control over these matters. It is, and always will be, our main goal to provide social quarters
that reflect as fair as possible a pricing scheme that is reasonable for our Members. We realize that it is an Elks
Lodge, but you have to understand that our social quarters is a business and must be run as such.
It is my sincere wish that all of our Members enjoy the upcoming summer.
Sincerely and fraternally, ER Lou Sottnick
Secretary’s Corner
LODGE OFFICERS
As a reminder to all Members, please inform the candidate you are sponsoring
of the following process leading up to membership. When the application is
received, the check for the initiation fee is deposited and the application is then
forwarded to the Membership Committee. The committee holds interviews
approximately once a month. The candidates will receive a letter in the mail
regarding the date and time of the interview. The notice is mailed to the address
submitted on the application. This address should be their permanent mailing
address. Make sure that the front and the back of the application is completed by
the candidate and sponsor. Incomplete applications will be returned, which will
cause a delay in the process.
All requests for information or services should be submitted in written format.
Make sure to include the Member’s name, Member number and a telephone
number. They can be left in the Member drop off box which is located in the
main bar area, emailed or mailed.
Thanks and have a great summer! Bonnie O’Kane

Memorial Day Services
By Ed Garton, Veterans Committee Chair
The Memorial Day Services held on May 30th began at the Hereford Inlet
Lighthouse at 9:30am. Approximately 50 people were in attendance
including the VFW Post with their Color Guard and the Marine Corps
League. At 10am, another service was held at the VFW Memorial Park in
North Wildwood. The event was attended by over 200 people along with
Mayor Henfey and City Council Members. Also in attendance was the Chief
of Police and the Chief of the Fire Department with their fire trucks. The service was conducted by Joe Orlando,
Post Commander along with participation from the AOH Color Guard and the VFW Post Color Guard. After the
service, all were invited to the Elks Lodge for coffee, bagels and donuts. The ladies of the Greater Wildwood Elks
Lodge set up the tables in a very appetizing way. We wish to thank the Volunteers including Pat Murphy, Ruth
Hatala, Kathleen Tryel and May Bolan. At 2pm, a service was held at the Crest Haven Veterans Cemetery. In
attendance were Elk Members along with State and County dignitaries. A wreath was laid at the entrance to the
cemetery. On May 25th, Elk Members placed flags on Veterans graves in a section of the cemetery.

Elks Parade 2011
I would like to take this time to thank everyone involved in
our parade which took place on Saturday, June 4th. Whether
you were a participant in the parade itself, worked the door,
serviced the bar or whatever other capacity you make have
held that day, it would not have been possible without you.
Special thanks go out to my food committee, headed by Joyce
Kowalski, for an outstanding job both before and after the
parade. I’d like to acknowledge and thank Charlie Johnson and
Joe Kowalski for manning the grill all day long. Very special
thanks to Eileen Meier, the head of my shirt committee, and
anyone who assisted her with this job. Finally, I’d like to
thank my float parade committee for their countless hours, and
dedication in creating an absolutely fantastic float to represent
our lodge. Thank you for yet another outstanding event.
Jim Benatti – Parade Chairman
Parade Bust Party
I would like to take this time to thank everyone who attended
our Parade Bust Party which took place on Saturday, May 21st.
Our theme this year was the Roaring 20’s, and it was a great
success indicated by the amount of tickets that were sold (130).
I thoroughly appreciated everyone who attended in costume
and would like to congratulate the winners of our contests.
Finally, I’d like to thank the Parade Bust Party committee and
all volunteers for all of their hard work and dedication.
Jim Benatti – Parade Chairman
Prom Night at the Elks Lodge
On May 20th, the Greater Wildwood Elks Lodge hosted a
Prom Night for teens from Cape May County High School of
Special Services. Along with chaperones and support staff,
over 70 people were in attendance for this gala event.
Years ago, these students did not have a prom like other high
schools commonly do. Upon learning of this, the Lodge
offered to host the event and provide the food and music as a
charitable donation. Now, the students look forward to this
event to mark an important mile-stone in their lives.
Elk volunteers beautifully decorated the hall in a nautical
theme creating a most amazing atmosphere. The students
enjoyed a fun-filled night of music and dancing.

Elks Present a Special Gift
By Bill Cieslinski, Public Relations
On Friday May 13th, the lodge donated a Rifton
Large Tricycle to Robert, a nine year old student
at Ocean Academy. Robbie has multiple sensory
issues with significant deficits in purposeful gross
motor function, cognitive deficits and a very short
attention span. Riding this adaptive tricycle is the
only age appropriate gross motor activity that
Robbie can perform with some degree of
independence. Thank you Elk Members for
making this gift possible with your generosity!

At the Lodge meeting on April 28th, the membership approved
a request to increase the annual donation to Volunteers in
Medicine by $1200 per year. In total, the Greater Wildwood Elks
donated $3400, including a $1000 grant from the Grand Lodge.
The volunteers and donors from Volunteers in Medicine come
from diverse professions, neighborhoods, and walks of life, but
all share a common goal to increase access to the compassionate,
quality care everyone deserves. Their mission is to understand
and serve the health and wellness needs of the medically
uninsured and underserved population living or working in Cape
May County, New Jersey.
Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) began in Hilton Head, South
Carolina. in 1992. VIM of Cape May County was established in
2002 and has cared for over 3,500 patients with more than
18,000 patient visits since opening. The clinic is staffed almost
exclusively by volunteers. Anyone interested in volunteering
their services can contact the clinic at (609) 463-2846.
“May we have eyes to see those who are rendered invisible
and excluded, Open arms and hearts to reach out and include
them, Healing hands to touch their lives with love, And in the
process heal ourselves." Dr. Jack McConnell, Founder of VIM
Letters of Thanks
The Greater Wildwood Elks Lodge received
the following letters thanking our Members
for their generous support:
“Thank you and the Elks Club for your continued support with
the Cape May County Employment Summit. Last week’s
Employment Summit was a huge success! Thank you for
coordinating the food and the volunteers for the day. This is an
important event in the county that exposes job seekers to
information about employment and educational resources.” Joni
Dolce, Integrated Employment Institute
“Thanks so much for the ramp at our home.” (regarding a
handicapped ramp built for a neighbor in need)
“Thank you so much for your kind thoughts, prayers and the
lovely fruit basket. It certainly did brighten the day.” (regarding
a Member with illness)
Welcome New Members
Because… “You’ll never have to stand alone in an uncaring
world around you, now that you’re a Member of the American
Elks family.”
The Lodge would like to extend a warm welcome to each of
the forty-five new Members that were initiated on May 21st.
Thank you to all the sponsors for helping our membership grow!
The next interviews will be held on June 11th with initiations
on June 25th.

Fundraiser at the Shore
By Bill Cieslinski, Public Relations
On Friday April 29th, the lodge hosted and event called "Fundraiser at the Shore"
benefiting Atlantic Cape Family Support Organization Inc. and Caring for Kids. Both
organizations serve families of Atlantic and Cape May counties who have children in
crisis struggling with mental, emotional, and behavior challenges.
The use of the lodge was donated, along with the food and the DJ. A silent auction was
held with over 25 items up to the highest bidder. DJ Philly Cuzz had everyone up and
dancing. A total of $3600 was raised and divided between both charities.
Viridian Energy Fundraiser
Viridian Energy has teamed up with the Greater Wildwood Elks Lodge
to help our members save money on electricity while raising funds for
charity. Deregulation of energy has given customers a choice of energy
suppliers creating competition and giving you the opportunity to save. Join
the over 100 Elk members who have signed up for Viridian! Service is still
provided by your current utility company and you continue to receive one bill from them
each month. There is NO enrollment fee, NO cancellation fee, and you can cancel
service at any time. A historical rate chart is published on the website to show the
comparison between Viridian and your current supplier.
Sign up today and start saving money while supporting our Elks charities. For more
information about the Viridian Energy Program, please visit www.viridian.com/elks1896

Congratulations to Jack Warren for being selected by
Lou Sottnick, ER, as the “Elk of the Month” for June
2011.
Many know Jack as one of our friendly bartenders.
He is a retired police officer and a valuable member of
the Community Relations Committee. Jack personally
helps distribute food for the needy during the holidays.
As you can tell from this great picture, he plays a
Leprechaun at all the Irish events. So convincing, some
say he really is a Leprechaun. Thank you Jack for
your hard work and dedication to the Elks!
We are proud to announce that Member Gerald
Boyle has been elected to the position of Tiler for
the New Jersey State Elks. Gerald will be a
valuable asset to the State Elks, as he certainly is
to the Greater Wildwood Elks. He is a person that
can always be relied upon, including by the
newsletter editor. Congratulations Gerald!
