2NAT0IO1N6AL HINADMIGPEIONNOSUHSIPS C T E K C I R C IC Y 2016 AL R A U R B E 8–15 F E S PR I N G S NCE O E M O C L WE AGAIN TO ALICE SPRINGS Australia’s most talented Indigenous cricketers again converge in the Red Centre in 2016. For the first time, they do so for the National Indigenous Cricket Championships (NICC). SPONSORING LOCAL CLUBS ACROSS AUSTRALIA. BECAUSE CLUBS DO, CRICKET CAN. We believe it’s important to support cricket at all levels, which is why we are sponsoring clubs around Australia with a two-year financial commitment, cricket gear and merchandise. Apply for sponsorship at commbank.com.au/cricket The NICC has been created to further advance and develop Indigenous cricket. The competition provides greater playing opportunities here in Alice Springs, but also forms a deeper connection with Australian cricket’s high performance pathway. Just as it is the first NICC, it is also my first year as Chairman of Cricket Australia, having taken over from Wally Edwards in October last year. It’s my task to continue to lead Australian cricket’s vision to be a sport for all Australians. Getting bats and balls into the hands of Indigenous boys, girls, men and women across Australia is vital to us achieving this vision. Our goal is for wickets to be taken, and sixes to be hit in Indigenous communities across the country – and success is being had at the grassroots level. More than 26,000 Indigenous Australians played cricket last year, well ahead of scheduled for our strategic goal of 27,000 participants by 2018. Beyond this grassroots participation, it’s about creating pathways for Indigenous Australians to follow. Pathways that ultimately lead to 2016 NATIONAL INDIGENOUS CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS the next Indigenous Australian pulling on our national colours, just as Faith Thomas, Jason Gillespie and Dan Christian did before them. This season, five Indigenous players were a part of the KFC Big Bash League, three women in the Rebel WBBL, two male under-19 Australian reps, and multiple players represented their states at senior and underage level. The goal of the next baggy green for an Indigenous Australian is not a distant one. And this is precisely why the NICC was created: to enhance and expedite the development of Indigenous cricketers. Thank you to Northern Territory Cricket, the Northern Territory Government, Commonwealth Bank Australia and the Alice Springs Town Council for their generous support. Similarly, Australian cricket is grateful for the support of the Arrernte people, the traditional owners of the land on which the NICC is staged. Good luck to all players, staff and officials involved in this, the first National Indigenous Cricket Championships. David Peever Chairman, Cricket Australia NICC.CRICKET.COM.AU 1 S ’ T N E D I PRES WELCOME 2016 A warm Northern Territory welcome to all players, officials and sponsors to the first National Indigenous Cricket Championships and the 2016 Imparja Cup. EVENT MANAGEMENT T E K C I R C T N NT Cricket is delighted to be partnering with Cricket Australia to host the 23rd Imparja Cup and the National Indigenous Cricket Championships in Alice Springs. This national carnival of Indigenous cricket and culture takes place on Arrernte land and we acknowledge the native title holders, Lhere Artepe and thank them for their support. The Imparja Cup enjoys strong support from The Lord’s Taverners Australia, the Commonwealth Bank, Cricket Australia, the Federal and Northern Territory Governments, State and Territory Cricket Associations, Alice Springs Cricket Association, Alice Springs Town Council, Imparja Television and Yeperenye Shopping Centre. The energy and hard work of the team of staff from NT Cricket and Cricket Australia ensure this event is competitive and a real carnival experience for all. We acknowledge the support and contribution of the Alice Springs Town Council, Northern Territory Government and Northern Territory Cricket in maintaining the quality of playing facilities that are available to you. We welcome the many match officials, umpires, scorers, statisticians and volunteers who have given their time as a contribution to this carnival and we acknowledge the friends and supporters who attend the games and support the teams. The staging of the National Indigenous Cricket Championships is an important pillar of Cricket Australia’s new National Indigenous Cricket 2 2016 NATIONAL INDIGENOUS CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS Strategy. With this addition, the profile of the Imparja Cup continues to grow and we are pleased to welcome men’s and women’s teams from every State and Territory in Australia as well as community teams from across the Northern Territory and beyond. In particular, the significant growth in the Women’s Community Division at this year’s event is immensely encouraging. We welcome the new Cricket Australia Chairman, Mr David Peever, and members of Cricket Australia management who are attending and supporting this national cricket event. It is very gratifying to see past Imparja Cup players now participating in State and National teams. I trust that in addition to playing good cricket you will all enjoy exchanging stories of cricket, family and country well after the games have concluded. It is important that we all play our part in making cricket available and accessible to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who wish to participate and to ensure the game is enjoyed by all, and all enjoy the benefits of cricket. Your contribution to the record of Indigenous cricket statistics, stories and memories of the carnival will ensure that we do have Indigenous heroes in the game. I wish everyone well for the Championships and an enjoyable carnival experience, good story telling and good cricket. Aunty Joy based the name on Woirwurrung words for ‘belong’ - Noogal and ‘success/win’ Toengorrt Tani. It is pronounced Noo-gal Too-en-gort Tarn-e. Indigenous artist Treahna Hamm designed the logo to represent Victorian Indigenous cricketers. This is a logo that can be owned and worn by any indigenous cricketer in Victoria. The design is linked to the members of the 1868 Australian team, composed of Aboriginal men from Western Victoria that toured England. The design also includes the seam of a cricket ball along the Aboriginal flag. NEW SOUTH WALES CRICKET NSW. THE GIRLS TEAM The girls cricket stumps design is about a very important utensil that was and still used by Aboriginal women today. A Coolamon is a hand-crafted wooden dish, which is used by the Aboriginal women when gathering bush tucker. The “Coolaman” played a very important role in a traditional woman’s life just as much as the Aboriginal man with the Didgeridoo. CRICKET NSW. THE BOYS TEAM Ceremonial performances in Aboriginal people are seen as the core of the cultural life. These male stumps represent a “Welcome Dance” from the NSW team to the other Aboriginal teams that are participating in the Imparja Cup. Ceremonies bring together all aspects of our culture -song, dance, body decoration, sculpture and painting. We call this the “Shake a leg Dance”. Daren Dunn Gamilaroi People “Sundancer” NICC.CRICKET.COM.AU 2016 NATIONAL INDIGENOUS CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS NICC.CRICKET.COM.AU 5 QUEENSLAND Born in Queensland in 1973, Chad’s mother is from the Torres Strait (Muralag) and his father is a Noongar man from WA. Self-taught, Chad has been a full time artist for the past 20 years producing commissioned pieces for organisations such as the Broncos NRL Club, Arrow Energy, Thiess, FOGs (Former Origin Greats) as well as government departments including QLD Police Service, IGEM , PSBA and QLD Fire and Emergency Dept. He has also completed over 40 murals within South East Queensland and regularly teaches indigenous culture within schools and daycare centres. The Imparja stumps have particular significance to Chad. His father served in the Australian Army for 33 years which the middle stump represents with its reference to the ANZACS. The red stump represents his aboriginal culture whilst the blue stump references his Torres Strait heritage. 6 2016 NATIONAL INDIGENOUS CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS NORTHERN TERRITORY PUPUNI JILAMARAV Pupuni Jilamara During ceremony on the Tiwi Islands a series of ‘yoi’ (dances), are performed; some are totemic (inherited from the person’s Mother) and some serve to act out the narrative of newly composed songs. Participants in these ceremonies are painted with turtiyanginari (the different natural ochre colours) in varying designs, transforming the dancers and, in some cases, providing protection against recognition by mapurtiti (spirits). These designs can be applied in different ways, one of which is using the finger, or in this case a brush. Painting of the face also occurs. These significant artistic designs collectively are called ‘Jilamara’. SOUTH AUSTRALIA The design on the stump represents the first indigenous cricket team that went to England to play, the blue dots represents the waters they travelled across to get there! The circles represents the communities or towns they went to. The brown bits with yellow dots represents the dreams of the players dreaming of the sands of their home lands!” Leila Maree Stuart-Likouresis Lake Eyre TASMANIA The stumps for the Tasmanian team at this year’s championships has bought together some different aspects and objects that are significant to the Aboriginal men and women of Tasmania. The Tasmanian Tiger features prominently and the Aboriginal name for the tiger is ‘kaparunina’ pronounced ka-pa-ru-ni-na. Our people have passed stories down for hundreds of years around this mythical beast and the tigers distinct footprint is also part of the story. Also featured on the stumps are kelp baskets which emphasize along with shell necklaces the recognition of our women’s status in the community also showcasing their strength and resilience in maintaining one of the few surviving traditional Aboriginal crafts in Tasmania. The Mutton Bird on the stump represents the grass - roots practice of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community. The cultural practice of muttonbirding is much more than the catching and harvesting of them - it is the one common activity that still brings together sections of the community whose families have practiced this cultural activity over many generations. It will survive for generations to come into the future because it is a part of ‘who we are’. Also prominent on our stump are two maps of Tasmania. These are showing at one stage “our people were in possession of the whole of Tasmania” and it also shows the different ‘bands’, direct family groups and tribes that were present prior to European invasion.
