A PUBLICATION FOR HPISD ALUMNI, PARENTS, GRANDPARENTS AND FRIENDS
A WORD FROM THE
HPHS CLASS OF 2013 VALEDICTORIAN
Arya McCarthy is the valedictorian of his class at Highland Park High School and Pipe Major with
the Highland Park Bagpipe Corps. He is a National Merit Semifinalist, AP Scholar with Distinction,
and Research Assistant at SMU. He received the Colorado School of Mines Medal of Achievement
in Math and Science and won awards in UIL Math, Science, and Computer Science. Arya has been
named a President’s Scholar at SMU where he will be studying computer science. Arya was awarded
the Carol Nelson scholarship. This is a reprint of his scholarship application.
Arya McCarthy
The bagpipe corps isn’t quite a club, isn’t quite a mascot, and isn’t quite a part of the band. Our
tradition has evolved over the years, but every HP alumnus and teacher has a unique affection
toward our blue and yellow kilts and the skirl of Scotland the Brave.
In October, an ebullient woman named Joy Duncan approached me, asking if the bagpipers would
play for a ceremony honoring Michael Boone, a Highland Park graduate. She made a special request
of us: that we would also have a drum dancer, aligning with the old school tradition of dancing atop
a drum. We’d planned for weeks, and the time had finally arrived. Four pipers, one dancer, four
bagpipes, five sets of kilts and jackets in uniform bags, and a bass drum transformed a subcompact
into a clown car so we could argue with Siri over how not to be late to the site. Amber had never
danced the Highland Fling before, but she’d quickly given in to the bouncing beat of the strathspey.
We snuck around through the bowels of the hotel to take the stage and ignite our drones as the
doors opened and the patricians filed in. We were a surprise, as if the five of us had popped out of a
cake. So we entered our collective flow state. Music just effused from our pipes. It was beautiful
and free. It was happy, and it was light.
Then Amber came out, taking her place on the drum. We started The Orange and The Blue, and the
dancing began. And from where I was standing, I saw a picture projected on the wall.
It was another drum dancer, from decades earlier, held up with bagpipers surrounding her. That’s
when what we did changed for me. We weren’t just playing our song for one room. It was a
compounding of all the tradition and the history of our school. We were just one manifestation, one
instance of the continuous legend. Everyone there listening and watching became indoctrinated,
baptized into the world of Highland Park’s bagpipe tradition. Reunions still ask for bagpipers to
play because of how much they’ve been affected by the inescapable power of HP’s traditions.
Paraphrasing words spoken by R. Lee Ermey, Bagpipers graduate; that’s what we are here for. But
the Bagpipe Corps lives forever. And that means YOU live forever.

published in Canada in a beautiful bilingual
magazine addition in March.
Dayle and Judy Rominger Casey ’56
celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in
June. ● Charles and Kay Weaver Peters were
in Reading, PA, for a reunion of WWII vets
where they had the chance to talk to the flight
commander of the flight on which her brother,
Frank, was shot down and killed in April of 1944,
a few days before the end of the war in Italy.
Their son in law, a professional videographer,
was with them to film an interview with the
95 year old commander of his recollections of
the flight. Kay’s brother was flying a P61 Black
Widow night fighter on a day mission when he
was shot down. Since the plane was painted
black to disappear at night, it was an easy
daylight target for German antiaircraft fire on
the Po River. 1943

Italy. On another trip they enjoyed visiting
the spectacular Galapagos Islands. ● Up until
December James Taylor and his wife, Adelle
were involved with the movie and film making
industry. They entertained producers, filming
crew, writers and even Larry Hagman. ● The
singing of the HPHS school song at graduation
brought a tear to the eye of Bob Thomas as he
and his wife, Gail, watched their granddaughter,
Molly Mannes cross the stage.
1953
William (Bill) Paulsell '53 and Sally, his
wife of 55 years, are enjoying retirement in
Lexington, Kentucky. After TCU and graduate

with tennis and pet therapy. Her Goldendoodle,
Daisy, is a certified Delta Society Pet Partner.
They go to Carilion Hospital bi-weekly and
visit pediatrics, pediatric oncology, elderly
acute care, and the stroke units. They participate
in the Reading to Dogs Program and visit two
schools weekly, where children whose reading
is below grade level, come individually and
read to Daisy. “It is amazing the way they relax,
laugh and hug her while they read a story. We
have seen great improvement in their reading
skills during a school year.” She and Daisy
also visit the V.A. Hospital in Roanoke and go
to Virginia Tech and Roanoke College for Stress
Management. She reports that it is so gratifying
to see people respond to the unconditional love

1965
Bill Slaton was recently appointed by Governor
Jerry Brown to the Board of the California
Public Employee Retirement System (CalPERS)
to represent local government employers.
CalPERS is the largest public pension fund in
the U.S.
● Far from retiring, Dallasites Margaret
(Baird) and Mark Noblin are active in The
Rock outreach, Inc. and were pictured in an April
publication while training and encouraging the
kids and staff at the Village Of Hope in Northern
Uganda. Musically talented Willis Alan Ramsey and
his singer/songwriter wife Allison Rogers, are

album Willis Alan Ramsey in its 50 Essential
Texas Albums. The magazine stated that –“The
songs on this album manages to combine
the best elements of folk, country, rock, jazz
and blues to produce a sound that's infinitely
listenable." Tom Dooley wrote “Ramsey is one
songwriter who can sing. He possesses a pliant
and expressive voice that seems to wrap itself
differently around each song. At times he sounds
a bit like James Taylor, and in my opinion he out
sings all of the guys with whom he's commonly
compared.” To keep informed of when they're
appearing at a club near you, like Willis Alan
Ramsey Fan on Facebook.
● Don Fowler moved seamlessly from
being President of Capital Hardware Associates
of Riodoso, New Mexico, to being President of

work has appeared in many galleries and public
venues, including Dallas. Several of her recent
works, including "Universe 3", a watercolor
monotype, were included in an installation at
Boston’s Logan Airport. Jane studied at Smith

● Jim McGill, a Cannon Missioner at Christ
Church Cathedral in downtown Houston, stays
busy shepherding his multi-cultural flock. But
"Father Jim", as he is affectionately known,
still makes time to participate in mission trips,
including one to Honduras in July 2011. "We
(had) a hugely successful medical mission trip
in Honduras. Of course, the very best part (was)
seeing all the wonderful people that we serve
and who serve us with their smiles, hugs and
laughter. We finished with 880 people seeing
our medical professionals, 2700 prescriptions
filled, eyeglasses given and countless giggles,
games, and fun. We have begun the process of
investigating how to help these …children of
God to have a water supply that is plentiful and
potable. … Anybody out there a water engineer
excited at the prospect of helping us out? The
work comes with the highest pay: joy, laughter,
and love. Apply now!
● Christy Karll remains an active painter,
sculptor and passionate conservationist. Her paintings and sculptures, such as Water
Stairway pictured here, have been exhibited
internationally and are included in many corporate
and private collections. After meeting Dr. Jane
Goodall, whose pioneering research transformed
scientific perceptions of the relationship
between humans and animals, Christy and her
husband created a ‘Wildlife Refuge’ outside
Houston that takes action to protect animals and
improve their habitat. She describes her work
as a metaphorical fusion of man and nature
suggesting the interconnectedness of all living
things and contemporary concerns about the
environment. She is a former board member
of DiverseWorks artspace and the Houston
Advisory Council for the Jane Goodall Institute.

VINTAGE MEDICAL ILLUSTRATIONS
DISCOVERED IN HPHS STORAGE ROOM
HPHS Science Department chair, Roseanne Leediker discovered a treasure when she was cleaning out
a storage closet last year: dozens of beautifully detailed medical illustrations by Max Brodel that were
used decades ago in science classes.
"They were just rolled up and stored in bins, and once we started unrolling them, we realized what a wonderful
piece of history we had on our hands," she said. "You just don't see these used in the classroom anymore,
but I think it would be a huge benefit to our students and faculty to display them in the science wing."
There are about 70 of these illustrations, several of them are duplicates. We are hoping to find a sponsor
to help frame as many as possible for display in the science wing for our students to enjoy. We may even
consider selling the duplicates to help cover the cost of framing. If you would like additional information,
please contact Jan Peterson at [email protected]

On June 13th, over 500 former and current athletes, their families, school administrators,
staff and friends gathered to honor their former coach, girls’ athletic director and above all,
mentor Jerry Sutterfield. Under the leadership of former cross country team members Shelley
Corder Matthews ’98, Deighton Marzuola Gongora ’98, Hadleigh Henderson ’99 and BonnyKate Marshall Ralston ’98, funds were raised to establish a lasting endowment in his name
as well as to give him and his family a very special trip to London and Cornwall. This was a
tremendous expression of love and respect from so many who have become better athletes and
better people because of the influence of Jerry Sutterfield.
Fortunately for the Highland Park School District, Jerry will be returning in a part-time position
as the HPISD Coordinator for Student Integrity and Compliance. In his new role, Sutterfield
will design and implement a program that promotes responsibility and accountability for all
students in grades 7-12.
“
I have to admit that I was
SHOCKED & AMAZED!
We are in the process of recruiting a large number of local merchants.
Just shop or dine as you normally do and charge your purchase on your
credit card.
I could not believe it. My, my - how sneaky everyone was.
When I was first asked if I would like a retirement
celebration, I thought, “Great!” This is a chance to see
people who mean a great deal to me. I thought we could
have a little get together and a few people would come.
Two days before the scheduled celebration, Bonny Kate,
Shelley, Deighton, and Hadleigh took me to lunch. That
was a wonderful time. Following lunch, they took me to see
the billboard. I was (and still am) so moved. WOW! They
told me to get ready because the celebration was, “huge”.
That is it! It is easy…and it is automatic. There are no additional steps
and no cost to you!

When Coletta, Dan, and I arrived at the HPHS cafeteria, the decorations, the people, and so
many great memories were there. (WOW, again) It was so great just to stand and talk with
former athletes, coaches, and friends. It was so very special. Jay Harris and Time Marzuola
were great MC’s and told a few funnies on me. The video is something I will treasure for the
rest of my life. So many kind things were said.
When the presentation of the endowment was made, I was so surprised and honored. To think
because of the kindness of others, so many in the future will benefit and the fact that it was
named in my honor is very humbling. The presentation of the trip to England had me dancing
on the inside and the outside. WHOOOPPPEEEE!!! Am I dreaming? Is this really happening?
I am so thankful to so many. I have lived my dream. All I wanted to be was a teacher and a
coach. All I ever wanted was to do the best I could with the gifts God has given me. I have done
that. All the boys and girls I’ve had to the opportunity to teach and coach and all the friends
I’ve made through this profession and truly enriched my life beyond anything I could ever
imagine. My wife, Coletta, had her hand in this and just knew exactly how to make it super
special for me – let me spend time with my kids and my friends.
Highland Park ISD is an incredible place. I am
blessed to have worked in such a great place and
live in such a great community. This school district
has been a tremendous blessing to my entire family.
I am so honored to be recognized by so many.
Every time I think about the great celebration given
to me, I laugh and cry (tears of joy).
Thank you to everyone who worked so hard for me
and to everyone who took time to come or send me
a celebratory message.
THANKS!!!
Jerry
