Golf Tournament was a Success

The 2013 6th Annual Sheldon Anderson Golf Tournament was another successful event for The Gillespie Center.
We had 16 teams playing in our tournament and this year, sadly, held our last event at Lakeview Golf Course as
they are closing. As well as playing a regular scramble golf tournament, our golfers hit Rubber Ducky’s into a
rope circle, threw golf clubs into a circle, tested their putting on the putting green and attempted to beat the Pro
on their Drive on Hole #9, all to win raffle tickets. Many were given away.
There are so many people who worked together to
make this tournament a success, and we’d like to thank
them. Barb Calhoun and her kitchen crew with
Pauline and Bill Thorson, Sandi Niccum, Lynn Bandh,
Shannon Garner, Jessica Werness, Rose Radke, and
Roger Anderson helped to serve what several golfers
said was “one of the best pulled pork dinners we’ve
ever had.” Don McCarville cooked the pork this year
on a “Green Egg.” On the course, we had Chuck
Radke, Helen Hanus, Joyce Matheson, Bernie Hames,
and Pat Salden helping to make the games at the
course fun for everyone. Mindy Anderson put
together miniature golf holes and golf balls to make
the centerpiece for a golf dinner at the Center, as well
as making many phone calls contacting volunteers for

We had over $4,000 worth of merchandise or money given to the golf tournament to make this event so
successful. We’d like to thank the following businesses and individuals for their donations. ColorWorks with
Orv Burma, Harbor Wine & Spirits, Permatop, Dearson Manufacturing, Mound True Value Hardware, Edward
Jones, Jubilee, Crow River Bank, Green T Accounting, Narrows Saloon, Mound-Westonka Rotary, City of
Mound, and State Farm Insurance all helped with the tournament by sponsoring a hole. Those helping with
donations for our Raffle tickets or Silent Auction included Tonka Auto & Marine, Lee Greenslit, MIIAB,
Lakeview Golf Course, West Bend Mutual Insurance, Larry Brustad, RPS, Bluff Creek, Harry Hurley, True

incredible Hidden Treasures. Remember these businesses as you do your shopping and other business in our
community, and thank them for their support of our Center.
We’ll be looking for a new golf course next year for our 7th Annual Sheldon Anderson Golf Tournament. If you
have a preference as to where you’d like this tournament to be held, let us know. We host this tournament in
September, so keep watching newsletters for information about our next tournament in case you would like to
join us with a team, sponsor a hole or donate an item for our raffle or Silent Auction.

Regardless if you have a Stand Alone Part D Plan or
a Medicare Advantage Plan that includes prescription
coverage, it is always a good idea to do an annual
review of the benefits. Once 2014 starts, it might be
too late to change plans and you could be “locked in”
to the plan for the year. It is a good idea to do a
Medicare Part D/Medicare Advantage plan checkup
on your prescription coverage. The Annual Election
Period this year (for the January 2014 effective date)
begins October 15th and ends on December 7th.

Linda Hugh’s Invitation to Visit Hidden Treasures
Have you ever been to Hidden Treasures? It’s only a little bit hidden, just a short elevator ride down to the
lower level of The Gillespie Center. There are treasures there - many different kinds of quality items that people
have donated. Everything is donated and Hidden Treasures is staffed by volunteers, so we do make the center
some monies (always wish we could do more). We provide for Santa's Hidden Treasure, we donate quality
items for silent auctions, and we donate out things we can't use to other organizations or groups.
Hidden Treasures has been in existence for about 10 years, and we’ll soon be working on a new look for the
area. We are open on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to noon, and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. So come
on down, have coffee and treats with us. In return you'll meet nice people to talk to. Tell your friends and
neighbors about us.

It is hard to believe, but October is already here. I love the cooler weather, the smell of fall, the changing of the
colors, and, of course, watching football. And October at The Gillespie Center is full of some really incredible
activities. The most popular activity each month is the Classic Country Jam that is held the 3rd Wednesday
every month from noon to 2:00 p.m. This month that activity will be held on October 16th. Hopefully you will
find many more exciting and enriching activities that you want to participate in during the month of October that
are listed in this newsletter.
I want to take this opportunity to say “Happy First Year” to our Scrip Program. Barb Calhoun and her loyal
helpers have been working hard for one year at helping the Gillespie Center find an easy way for the community
to donate to The Gillespie Center without spending any extra money. When you purchase a gift card for various
businesses in our area, each of those places give a percentage of that gift card to The Gillespie Center. It almost
sounds too good to be true, but it really works. I sure don’t want to join Wal-Mart and have a holiday
advertisement running already, but as you begin making your Christmas gift list, you should consider looking at
the list of gift cards available and plan on purchasing those from The Gillespie Center as a cheap way to help the
Gillespie Center at the same time.
We welcome Weight Watchers’ “Morning Meeting” to our Gillespie Family. Their Thursday 5:30 p.m. meeting
at our center has been so popular they are adding a morning meeting. If this fits your schedule, join them.
By the time you read this newsletter, hopefully all 300 Sweepstakes tickets that we sell will be gone, but come
to the center or call the center, if you are still interested, in case there are a couple left. This is one of our
fundraisers. Tickets for the 2013 – 2014 year must be sold before the week of October 7th through the 11th. Our
first week’s drawing will be on Friday, October 11th.

Meet Marty Gilbertson
“Grandview wouldn’t have been the same without Marty
there,” said Donna Smith, Gillespie Board member and
former teacher at Grandview Middle School. Marty was the
secretary to the principal at Grandview for 20 years. She had
first worked in the old high school, she was also at Shirley
Hills, and then Grandview. She said of her career with the
Mound Public Schools, “I enjoyed it a lot. I worked with a
lot of good people – a great bunch of teachers.”
Marty was originally from Cologne, MN, where she grew
up on a farm there. She later moved to California and was
working there when she met her husband. “We were both
from Minnesota, and a mutual friend thought we should
meet,” Marty said. They were married in Las Vegas and
lived in Los Angeles until after their second son was born.
They moved back to Minnesota and had two more boys.
Marty enjoys going to Nevada for a month in the winter to
visit one of her sons and his family. She also spends a few

Oakdale, and one of her sons is just completing a long-term sailing trip. She has seven grandchildren.
In commenting on one of her special interests, Marty said, “For the past twenty-plus years, a couple of friends
and I rented space in The Antique Mall of Rogers. We left last December. It was such a fun experience. I
learned a lot & met interesting people. We worked one day a month so got to meet all kinds of collectors.”
At The Gillespie Center, Marty is a receptionist, she helps with Christmas projects, assists with getting the
Gazette mailed out, does some proofreading, and is Recording Secretary for the Board of Directors’ meetings.
With a cheerful smile, she says, “Whatever they tell me to do, I do – and enjoy it!”

Scrappy Quilters put on a “Showing of the Quilts”
Even though visitors to The Gillespie Center on
Wednesday, September 16, might have been
heading into the dining room to find a table for
the “Country Music Jam,” many of them
stopped to take a second look when they saw all
the colorful quilts on display.
Darlene Roiland, Ann Eberhart, LaVonne Leroux, Carol
Norberg, and Jackie Roelofs enjoy the camaraderie of
quilting and the sense of accomplishment from completing
a quilt. (Not pictured: Wendie Bame.)
The display was the work of the “Scrappy
Quilters,” a group that works with scraps of
fabric to create quilts that are given to local
churches and charities. The fabric is all donated.
Sometimes, the donation is an unfinished
project, a quilt that someone started but wasn’t
able to finish. In commenting on their work,
LaVonne Leroux, the head of the Scrappy
Quilters said, “We take great pride in what we
do.” Carol Norberg pointed out for anyone who
might want to join the group, that there are
various ways to participate: measuring, sorting,
sewing, ironing, tying, and more. She added
that it’s “lots of fun, lots of laughs.”

quilts the group had completed.
The Scrappy Quilters meet on Wednesdays at the
Center at 11:00 a.m. You’re invited to join the
group or just stop by see what they’re working
on.

Happy 1st Birthday to The Gillespie Center Scrip Program!
Yes, we have completed our first year with 48 Gillespie “Go-Getters” supporting this fund-raiser. A huge
Thank You goes to these people. As the saying goes, there is always room for one more – or 10, 20, etc.
Many of the ones who order do so faithfully, over and over again. They buy gas, grocery, prescription, and
restaurant cards. Some even compare rebates before choosing the card to purchase. This method of
fundraising has great potential, but our program needs to grow. This can happen by the current supporters
buying more or bigger cards, but the better way, it seems to me, would be to increase the number of
supporters. That will only happen if you decide to help.
If you are not familiar with the plan, it works like this: Retailers give us a percentage rebate for purchasing
gift cards redeemable at their businesses. These rebates range from 1% to 16%. You can immediately see that
these can add up rapidly. You may feel that your rebate isn’t large, but when added to others it becomes
meaningful. More importantly, it doesn’t cost you anything! You will receive face value of the card; there
are no fees for purchasing. Think of what you spend for gas each month. Wouldn’t you like 4 to 9 % of that
to be sent to The Gillespie Center? Do you buy groceries at Cub, Wal-Mart, Rainbow, or Target? Their
rebates vary from 1 to 4%. Restaurants, clothing stores and entertainment merchants are the most generous
with their rebates. The list of retailers and rebates is available at the front desk along with order forms.
As we began to plan our Christmas giving, simplify yours by giving gift cards. The recipients (especially
grandchildren) love them, and the cards have no expiration date. So please consider buying scrip for your own
use or as gifts. This truly is a “win-win” situation. You win and The Gillespie Center wins with no cost to
you. Donate free!

The Center can accommodate from 20 to 350 people. It has a
dining room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking a beautiful
wildlife area, and it has several smaller meeting rooms.
The entire facility is handicapped accessible with large restrooms.
