User-specific Application Models inherit base model components Quantities and Units Management Data Descriptive Data Others Security Measured Values www.pvmsys.com 13 PVMSYS InfraSolutions ASAM ODS (Open data Service) ASAM-ODS - defines data models, interfaces and methods for the storage, interpretation and exchange of measuring and automation data. It is: Platform independent Operating system independent Database independent Vendor independent www.pvmsys.com 14 PVMSYS InfraSolutions ASAM ODS (Open data Service) ASAM-ODS - ODS isolates the applications and the stored data. Application ASAM ODS Data Model Application Interfaces Physical Storage Transport Format Data Storage www.pvmsys.com 15 PVMSYS InfraSolutions ASAM ODS (Open data Service) ODS API Closely coupled with base model Allows client applications to store / ODS Client Applications Interface retrieve meta-data and measurement data in a standard, non-proprietary manner. Complexity of physical data access is ODS Server Applications hidden from client software. Older, RPC API is still supported, but no new features. 3rd-party libraries simplify access. www.pvmsys.com MetaData Binary Data 16 PVMSYS InfraSolutions ASAM ODS (Open data Service) Who is active with ASAM-ODS ? 2 main groups: Tool-makers: NI(Diadem), LMS, Mueller-BBM, HEAD, Additive(Origin), …. More (please look at ASAMs web-site ) Server-makers www.pvmsys.com 17 PVMSYS InfraSolutions SUMMARY Vehicles are developed even without these systems by manually disconnected systems, But probably by using seamless integration platform of ODS, you can help the OEMs to reduce time to market. www.pvmsys.com 18 PVMSYS InfraSolutions Impact Some statements ASAM-ODS is a joint activity of suppliers and customers Enables suppliers to work in a similar manner Does not extend your currrent business with current customers But allows suppliers more easy access to international markets www.pvmsys.com 19 PVMSYS InfraSolutions Impact , Some central statements ASAM-ODS is a joint activity Improvement of standards requires co-operation ASAM organisation is a platform and has defined processes OEMs have a platform to express their demand Suppliers have a platform to communicate. This allows groups of suppliers to discuss and develop or enhance standards. Such common standards help OEMs to improve the performance and robustness of their internal processes. Recommondation: do not only observe but actively participate The standards are not finished or finalized. Please join and help www.pvmsys.com 20 PVMSYS InfraSolutions Impact , Some central statements Motivates vendors to work in a similar manner This sounds like standards will reduce vendors ability to create new solutions. This is not the case. You still can develop new methods and products Only the storage of definitions and results is pre-defined by the standard This helps the OEMs in 2 ways: a) improve interoperability if multiple tools are used in one process b) Better longterm-useability: files and databases that are based on ASAM-ODS are more precise than proprietary ones. Recommondation: develop solutions, not new files Benefit: less resources , less discussions with OEMs www.pvmsys.com 21 PVMSYS InfraSolutions Impact , Some central statements Does not extend your current business This sounds negative but is not. Reality is: your customers want to do next projects in a different manner. Business will remain same size. But due to the use of ASAM-ODS your customers have less effort to work with data. www.pvmsys.com 22 PVMSYS InfraSolutions Impact , Some central statements Allows more easy access to international market ASAM is international. OEMs from many countries of the world are observing the ASAM-activities. If a supplier joins the ASAM, his companies name is then visible to an international audience. If a supplier supports ASAM-standards, this is a message to the OEMs: „yes, we want to support your standardisation activities“ www.pvmsys.com 23 PVMSYS InfraSolutions PVMSYS What products are on the market? Santorin, ods-server from AVL ∙ (www.avl.com) OpenMDM, a community-effort for base-software ∙ (www.openmdm.org) Avalon, ods-server from HighQSoft www.pvmsys.com 24 PVMSYS InfraSolutions Impact , Some central statements An use-case: how ASAM changed our company We had been a small company doing projects in Germany only Projects was Analysis, file-conversion, databases We joined the ASAM and helped to create the specifications ASAM was initally german As soon as ASAM changed to become a european activity, we had contacts to european OEMs As soon as ASAM changed to become a world-wide activity, we had contacts to even more international OEMs Now we see the tier-1-suppliers to do projects based on the standard And we see that ASAM is of use in many industries outside the automotiveworld. www.pvmsys.com 25 PVMSYS InfraSolutions How are we ? Tool vendor can not supply the solution which is specific to your organization Infrastructure Oriented approach ∙ Think of it as an knowledge backbone for the enterprise rather than just data back up and search solution ∙ Example: Think of it as a reusable IT framework based solutions , otherwise it will be very expensive to implement such an architecture Team approach ∙ Cross functional team of engineering , Engineering IT , Data Source supplier ,Analysis tool vendor and Implementor is critical to the success of these projects ∙ Example: Start with an end use of the application in mind otherwise it fails www.pvmsys.com 51 PVMSYS InfraSolutions Best practices : Approach towards ODS project Analyze Existing process Identify data sources and it‘s provider Identify Analysis tools and it‘s provider Engineering IT should coordinate with Engineering , Data Source , Analysis tools and Implementer Work on Application model that support the Engineering requirements Define Work Flow of the department /Enterprise Define Planning Information that will be used by Data source provider Define measurement result that will be provided by Data source provider Define Interface with Analysis tools as to how the data to be analyzed will be passed Define if the analysis results need to be stored back www.pvmsys.com 52 PVMSYS InfraSolutions Best practices : Approach towards ODS project Work Division between OEM and tool supplier OEM (Engineering / Engineering IT) ∙ Process Study ∙ Application model that support the process ∙ Business Logic Data Source Provider ∙ Knowledge of how ATFX read , ATFX write ∙ Planning information as ATFX ∙ Result transfer as ATFX Analysis tool supplier ∙ Knowledge of how to access measurement tree of ODS wiht MIME type ∙ Selected data source from Web application ∙ ATFX for result storage (if required) ∙ Storage location of Analysis report Engineering IT ∙ Provide Necessary Infrastructure to support the application ∙ Can write business Logic which is OEM knowledge www.pvmsys.com 53 PVMSYS InfraSolutions Best practices : FAQ I am already managing data in File based System , How ODS is different? ∙ Files have to be opened to check for the content , where as Database can be search for meta data ∙ Special processing needs to be written for handling files specifics where as ODS gives uniform access ∙ Files are not secured , ODS data is secured even upto channel level ∙ Files will not have all the content neccessary for search , where as ODS based System provides link to all environment infomation related to test ∙ Many More As an OEM How can I work with my competition? ∙ You work with your competition only for common problem and hence you try to minimze the cost of solutions. Because the cost will be shared by all OEMs ∙ You try to use the standard which will define the Product validation and verification process independent of suppliers . Normally if you try to define your own standards to define your own process then cost of integrating multiple vendors will be very high Why Supplier will support standard acitivity since they become replaceable? ∙ If All OEM asks for standard based data , then it will be easy for supplier to provide only one interface and then he can concentrate more on innovation www.pvmsys.com 54 PVMSYS InfraSolutions Best practices : FAQ If I want to go for ODS based system then Do I need to change all my existing processes? ∙ ODS may not ask you to change your existing process , On the other hand it will try to structure your existing process ∙ Example: If you are already doing data analysis for a File based System then it will only ask you change data access mechanism , your business logic can remain same ∙ So it will be more of a Mapping process , or reorganization of engineering data.... Do my data source supplier has to be ASAM compliant ? ∙ Ideally it is good if the data source supplier is ODS compliant , However even if is not , There is an import mechanism which will allow to import the non ASAM compliant data. If I have to transfer all Mass data into database then I will have to pay lots of $$ in Licensing ? ∙ ODS supports mixed mode options , where the mass data can continue to remain in Files (Example MDF files from ECU area) if they are well described BINARY files Can I buy OFF the Shelf Solutions ∙ No one solution will fit ALL. Every company has it own unique development process that is why base model should be extended to application model to support their own process www.pvmsys.com 55 PVMSYS InfraSolutions Best practices : FAQ If I want to go for ODS based system then Do I need to change all my existing processes? ∙ ODS may not ask you to change your existing process , On the other hand it will try to structure your existing process ∙ Example: If you are already doing data analysis for a File based System then it will only ask you change data access mechanism , your business logic can remain same ∙ So it will be more of a Mapping process , or reorganization of engineering data....
