February 2014 Dr. Richard A. Farmer Senior Pastor Trinity Baptist Church 244 S. Main St. Marion, OH 43302 740-387-6527 www.tbcmarion.org [email protected] Hope Part 2: A Restless World Full of Restless People Luke 2:29: “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. 30 For my eyes have seen your salvation, 31which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.” gods, or the Temple which rose before the people of Israel in Jerusalem, Jesus was born into a very religious world. Roman law protected the rights of people to worship God or the gods, as long as it did not interfere with the allegiance expected of their citizenship or the paying of taxes. Given there was no real state When Jesus entered the world he entered a religion until later in cosmic conglomerate of this century, religious belief was viewed as spiritual hunger and thirst. Everywhere one nothing more than a nuisance at worst and looked around the often a convenient Roman Empire, one mechanism for keeping could find signs of the people in line. After people seeking Deity, all, a people with hope, whether we speak of the Roman tendency to be it real or imagined, is an easier people to deify the Caesar, the control (so thought the Greek and Roman president in The Pantheon of endless Hunger Games). The arrival of the Messiah was not viewed as a threat to the Emperor, In the February issue: In Addition to 3 Trinity News 4 In Memory of 5 Matt’s Newsletter 6 Cathy’s Corner 7 Council Minutes 8 Financial Report 9 but to Herod. Unless the worshippers had an army, the Iron Kingdom known as Rome did not feel the threat of any so-called King. The slaughter of the innocents around Bethlehem was a sign of the threat of Jesus to the Jewish political establishment rather than as a threat to Rome. Both the song of Mary and the song of Simeon Continued on the next page... It is very clear that many longed for The Messiah, the one who had been promised by the prophets for hundreds of years, the One who would deliver Israel from the hands of her oppressor and restore Israel to her rightful place of prominence in the world. But just as the Yankee fan can settle for nothing less than another championship, many in Israel would settle for nothing less than a Messiah who would destroy the enemies of Israel through this longed for restoration. The power of hope is fueled by our agendas, for it is political priority which is often allowed to define the desires of our hearts. Once we have decided what the fulfillment of our hopes and dreams is supposed to look like, it is very difficult to accept and receive anything less than what is anxiously and powerfully anticipated. John’s gospel tells us that Jesus came unto his own, but his own people did not receive Him. How?...How? How could this be? How could a people with a history and heritage so deeply immersed in the anticipation of the coming Messiah miss His arrival when the day had finally arrived? How could a people who celebrated the words of the Prophets through their daily devotions and songs of worship and educational institutions misunderstand their meaning bicycle. Those whose hopes and dreams are swallowed up by materialism, as we drown ourselves in the temporary happiness of “stuff theology,” will never be content with a pair of jeans passed down from their brother. Not only do we need hope to define and shape our humanity, we need a hope that can be trusted, a hope that is true, a hope that can deliver what is truly needed rather than what is selfishly desired. Israel longed for a Messiah who would destroy her enemies. Simeon longed for a to such a degree that we can Messiah who would forgive safely say, “they did not have our sins. We long for an a clue!” How? The same way Advent that will fill up the you and I do, the same way space under and around our we continue to shape the Christmas tree. But God Messiah after our own image desires to give us an Advent as we celebrate Advent in that will bring us humble and the aisles of WalMart in empty handed as we bow our 2013. knees and our hearts to a tiny Babe in a Cave. The hope No matter the power of of Advent is not found within hope, it will always disappoint packages and stockings, but those who hope in something rather as we remove our beyond what life can deliver shoes, finding ourselves on or who hope in things that holy ground once again……. can never fill the void we are convinced “stuff” can fill. Those who long for an iPad will be disappointed in a pony. Those who have their hearts set on a new car will not leap for joy at the site of a 2 During the past month I have been engaged in the following activities: ∗ ∗ ∗ Regular times of personal Bible study and prayer Specific prayer times for our families, the community, and the future workers and ministries here at Trinity Meeting with Pastor Rick to explore children’s ministry opportunities and development Preparing administrative materials for Tuesday Group and Awana Snack preparation for Tuesday Group and Awana Communicating with parents with children in Tuesday Group Communicating with the volunteers for Awana Reviewing new Awana materials Ordering Awana materials Creating numerous forms for Awana Participation in Education Ministry meetings as contributor and note taker Copying and preparing new Jr. Church materials Previewing VBS materials Cathy In addition I have spent the past month as follows: ♦ Hosting a Tuesday night College/20’s group in my home ♦ Leading a weekly campus Bible study ∗ ♦ Meeting one-on-one with college students ∗ ♦ Meeting with local churches to plan future CCO partnerships in Marion ♦ Meeting monthly with my CCO Staff Director ∗ ♦ Support raising to help meet my monthly goals ∗ necessary for salary and ministry expenses ∗ ♦ Weekly staff meetings ∗ ♦ Leading youth group Sunday nights ∗ ♦ Managing and updating the church website ♦ Running the sound board and sermon recordings ∗ on Sunday ∗ ♦ Books I’ve been reading: Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning The Big Story: How the Bible Currently I have been reading the following books (along Makes Sense Out of Life by with studying the Hebrew language): Prayer: Finding the Justin Buzzard Heart’s True Home, The Attentive Life. The 16-page, softcover book, published by AuthorHouse, strives to teach young readers a valuable lesson in self-confidence through a wise teacher, Mrs. Star. “This is hopefully the first in a series of children’s books where Mrs. Star will teach a child the self-confidence they need in order to be a successful learner,” Sedlacek said in a news release. According to the authors, every year, Mrs. Star looks forward to the first day of school. As she meets her new students, she asks them, “Who is a Superstar?” The students ponder the question and discuss different members of their community, including doctors, policemen and farmers. They learn they all are superstars. And Mrs. Star encourages the students with her own positive mantra: “You are all Superstars! You can be anything you choose to be!” Sedlacek and Coleman want to inspire children to believe in themselves and to achieve their dreams. “We want the readers to know they are superstars and can be anything they want to be,” Sedlacek, a teacher for 23 years, said. “My uncle and I have wanted to publish children’s books for many years. When I first started teaching, I saw the need for books to teach self-confidence. So we knew this would be the topic of our first one. “Children must have selfconfidence in order to learn,” she said. The book is available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. o T h a nk s t o e v e r y o ne wh do na t e d t o o t h b r u s h e s a nd t o o t h pa s t e t o g i v e t h o s e wh o c a m e t o t h e D e c e m b e r s o u p k i t c h e n! Today was the Soup Kitchen which is sponsored by Martha Circle. It has been a blessing to be part of this circle; however, my busy schedule does not often allow me to attend. The ladies from this circle not only served the needy in our community; they also worked together and purchased 52 wintery items (scarves, hats, and gloves) for our Awana kids. It will be such a joy to share those warm blessings with the kids next week. Another ministry of Trinity that has beautifully impacted our kids is the Friday Movie outreach. Hayden came to see a movie with his dad. A relative who attends Trinity told them about movie nights. The movies got them in the door and familiar with some of our faces. Not long after, Hayden became a regular attendee at Awana and has asked his dad if they can come Sundays, too. His dad cannot be more thrilled to hang out with his son while he learns the Word. How many kids ask their parent(s) to come to church? It is such a joy to see how the ministries here at Trinity complement each other and flow into each other. The ministries of Trinity are impacting the community, and the community is also impacting the ministries of Trinity. New teaching materials that have long been awaited for Junior Church (K-2 grades) have arrived! The series that the kids enjoyed last year has been reworked into a new format and also developed into the next volume. The series published by Awana moves our kids through a cover-to-cover journey through the Bible. As we shiver through the beginning of the year, please keep our volunteers, kids and their families in prayer for physical health and spiritual growth. We have such a delightful group of folks who are hungry to know God’s Word and eager to share His love and truth as well. We are so blessed to have both! We always have room for more volunteers, especially for Sunday School and Junior Church teachers. If you are interested, please contact me, Richard Caldwell or Sheila Klenzman. 7 January 9th, 2013 Moderator, Keith Griffith, called the meeting to order. Pastor Rick offered prayer and scripture from 1st Corinthians 12:12-13 that he hopes to focus on in 2014: Who We Are as a Church, United as One in the Body. Motion by Colleen McCartney to accept Minutes of the previous meeting as written; seconded by Mark Poling and approved by voice vote. Financial Report • Fred Price noted that we received more than we spent in the year 2013. • CCO-Marion $500.00, listed on the report, reflects the first financial gift from community churches to encourage Matt Stratton staying in Marion to continue the campus ministry. Pastors of several churches are expressing an interest in making this a community mission. If Matt and Katrina remain in Marion, Trinity will be their home church but they would also be sharing with other churches in the community. • Motion to accept the financial report by Colleen; seconded by John Klenzman and approved by voice vote. Pastor Rick • His complete report is in the Tidings. He plans to present a “$20.14 in 2014 Challenge” to the church in January. • The Elder Board is unanimous in its recommendation that the Moderator serve as an Elder pro tem during his term in order to better connect the Council to the Elders. Motion by Pastor Rick to accept this recommendation for presentation to the congregation at the next quarterly business meeting; seconded by John Klenzman and approved by voice vote. R i c h a r d F a r m er 2014 I would like to take a moment and reflect upon some of our gifted leaders – Our Eldership. Dr. Fritz Winegarner is our chairman. Fritz has a way of keeping us focused during our meetings. It is a frequent event that we begin our gatherings with Scripture reading and reflection. We have been known to read entire books of the Bible as a group before we begin our discussions. Fritz is a very passionate Bible student and prayer warrior, and he exudes his enthusiasm for Christ in all that he does, and we are so very fortunate to have him. This past year he has battled cancer with patience, endurance, great faith, and as an incredible example to all of us of faith in the midst of tremendous suffering. Fred Price keeps us grounded in all of our meetings. He has a way of capturing and representing the needs of some of our obscure members, whose voices often get over looked. Fred makes sure we do not overlook them. His love for Christ and this church is on display with all he does and says. Thank you, Fred, for being a powerful servant and a faithful mentor and friend. Mark Poling is one of our newest elders. He has a quiet confidence about him that amazes me. His insightful observations and mature approach to serving others is refreshing thing to see. I personally have learned so much just watching and listening to what he brings to our meetings. John Klenzman, also one of our newest members, has a wisdom that is incredible to watch. His questions are always right on and unique; his comments are never wasted, and his love for Trinity Baptist Church is unparalleled. Dr. Mark Piacentini keeps us always on task, serving and loving the people of our community. His brilliant observations and incredible expertise helps us to remember who we are and what we are called to do as a church body. And he does this with the humility of a true servant. All of these men together make up a eldership which is leading us in profound ways toward a spiritual transformation which is at its core- Christ honoring. You as a congregation are to be commended for the group you have gathered together. (Updated based on actual figures) Now for the challenge of 2014: which I will call 20.14 in 2014. I have always had a love for math. Although this has always taken the form of sports statistics and obscure trivia, numbers fascinate me. So I want to give you a few numbers to ponder this year. In order to meet our budget we must average between 25 and 26 thousand dollars a month. So let’s let the goal at 26. Given this reality, this is a very doable goal. Our worst months of 2013 were around 20 thousand. So if we commit ourselves to making our worst months of the year more like 25 thousand rather than 20 thousand, we are there. So, let’s translate these numbers into a weekly or monthly number for each of us, the families of Trinity. If we increase our giving so that we are averaging at least 26 thousand dollars a month, using the estimate of 100 giving units in our church, we are talking $312 a month per giving unit. Last year we averaged $286 a month, per giving unit. So where do I get 20.14 in 2014? This simply means that if each of us comes up with an additional $20.14 cents every month, we exceed our budget by a few dollars this year. That’s how easy it would be. Let’s make this amount practical. We are talking one movie with popcorn and soda. We are talking four lattes. We are talking one $20 lottery ticket. We are talking two packs of cigarettes. We are talking one dinner out. We are talking ten cups of coffee. We are talking five Big Macs. We are talking five gallons of gas. We are talking nine bags of potato chips. We are talking one less trip to the grocery store. There are a myriad of ways to create 20.14 twice a month. I’ve only mentioned things we can do without personally. What about the ways we can create revenue as we let our creative juices flow, choosing then to share the abundance with our church and with Christ? The only real question, for each of us, is this: Is being a part of doing God’s work in Marion, Ohio, important to each of us? Many of you have already answered yes to this call, so for you it’s just continuing to do what you are already doing. For others of us, we might consider saying yes to this question for the very first time as we live out our vision to get “In Touch” with God and others, becoming “Souled Out” participants in the Kingdom of God, and “Set Loose” to take the love of God to the world. Is this call worth 20.14 in 2014 for you and for me? Is not the obvious answer – Yes, Yes, Yes!!!! 10 11 The Education Ministry Team Minutes The Education Ministry Team met Monday January 27, 2014.
