with the opening of the GPWA Conference being held September 24 and 25 in
the Affiliate Zone during the European
iGaming Conference and Expo in Barcelona. This unique “show within a show”
is part of an effort to bring the affiliate
and the general iGaming communities
together for the first time ever. We’re
proud to be involved in this endeavor,
and we’re thrilled that so many GPWA
members will be there!
Our cover story takes a close look at the
extraordinary measures the Kahnawake
Gaming Commission is taking to get to
the bottom of the “superuser” scandals
at Absolute Poker and UltimateBet – an
investigation with which AP and UB and
their parent company are fully cooperating.
This issue also includes a superb
assortment of affiliate and affiliate
manager interviews, plus you’ll have
the opportunity to tag along with Chris
Taylor of Affiliate Club as he takes you
through one day in the life of an affiliate
manager. And be sure to read the “Places
I’ve Played” piece, where you’ll see how
the first Facebook application created for
online gambling affiliates will increase
your revenue along with the traffic to
your portal sites.
Last – but never, never least – Rebecca
Liggero shares with us the results of her
scholarly research into what makes some
members of the GPWA community and
assorted hangers-on more “superlative”
than others. Not that I really care, but I
couldn’t help noticing that I’m not listed
as superlative in any category – not even
“sexiest” or “best dressed.” (Note to self:
Keep an eye on RL.)

The bill, AB2026, is also
known as the California
Gambling Control/Intrastate Online Poker Legalization Act. If passed
in its current forum, it
could become law as
soon as July of next
year after receiving subsequent approval from a
full Senate vote. This would
see California make history
as the first U.S. state to regulate
and legalize intrastate online poker for its
residents.

Review
AB2026 was born from provisions in 2006’s
Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement
Act (UIGEA) federal legislation that allows
for in-state poker if certain conditions are
met. The bill meets these guidelines and was
“We hope to have this bill passed... and signed
into law,” said Anthony “Tuff Fish” Sandstrom, a
professional poker player and California resident.
(At press time, the bill hadn’t been voted on.)
Sandstrom earlier began a petition calling for
State-run online poker for residents but later
withdrew his application despite having the measure approved by the California Secretary of
State and scheduled for last February’s ballot.
“My hope is that it would go into
effect in January of next year. We
would then have the Division of
Gaming Control and the Attorney
General’s office spend whatever brief
period of time they would need to draft the appropriate regulations and hopefully sometime in the
middle of next year we could actually have legal
poker online in California.”
Ivobank offering online services
A
new online bank catering to gaming
businesses and enthusiasts has
launched, offering fast and secure online
payment and money transfer services.
Ivobank is believed to be the first independent bank
to launch since the dotcom boom in 2001 and the
first to be authorized and regulated by the Financial
Services Authority (FSA).
Backed by the Sampoerna family, Ivobank plans
to have one million customers within the next five
years. Ivobank’s Managing Director, Timothy Sawyer, said while the bank is open to anyone, it had
been specifically designed with online gamers in
mind.
“The online gaming industry has developed rapidly
in recent years, but the financial services supporting
it have not kept pace,” Sawyer said. “Many online
businesses and customers have been ill-served to
date, resulting in relatively high costs and relatively
low levels of service.
“Ivobank aims to plug the gap by offering instant and
highly secure online payment services, combined with
competitive interest rates,” Sawyer continued.
On top of this, Ivobank allows customers to move
money instantly from their account to friends and

family overseas, making it very
attractive
for international money transfer.
“Ivobank is perfect for anyone who wants to shop
online, but doesn’t want to use a credit card,” Sawyer concluded.
Headquartered in London, Ivobank has been set
up by a number of industry veterans who have held
senior positions within the banking and gaming industries.

Casino Chronicles:
Using “Places I’ve Played”
for fun and profit
By Michael Corfman
T
his summer the GPWA, together with
Casino City, launched “Places I’ve
Played,” the first Facebook application
created for online gambling affiliates.
This revolutionary program is designed
to serve two purposes:
1. Provide a way for people who like to
gamble, either online or in brick-andmortar casinos, to share their gambling
experiences on Facebook today and share
them with their friends on other social
networks tomorrow.
2. Create a way for webmasters to use
their players as spokespeople who increase both their gambling affiliate revenue and the traffic to their portal sites.
How does it work for players?
For players, “Places I’ve Played” is a lot
of fun and very easy to use. They can
chronicle and share all sorts of information about their gambling experiences
with their friends.
Players simply enter the name of an online
gambling site or land-based casino where
they’ve played, and enter details about
their experience by selectively checking
pertinent boxes, including: played for
money, played for fun, won, won big, lost,
paid promptly, favorite and recommend/
don’t recommend. The can also post comments, giving their friends their up close
and personal review of the place in question. See screen 1.
Players – the friends of your players! – can
also click on the “My Friends Places” link
to check out the online gaming sites where
your players play. They’ll see a screen with
separate listings for land-based properties
and online gaming sites, along with colorful icons their friends have checked to tell
the world how they made out and how they
rate each venue. See screen 2.
Those who like geography can zoom
across the globe, selecting casinos they’ve
visited from an interactive map.
GPWA Times | Casino Chronicles: Using “Places I’ve Played” for Fun and Profit
When players click on the details link for
any property, they’re sent to a page with
detailed property data (including links to
online gaming sites), a screen grab of the
site, and info on what their friends have
done at that site. See screen 3.
Players can also invite more friends to use
the application and fill out a profile of their
gambling interests.

How does it work for
webmasters?
21
For webmasters, “Places I’ve Played”
provides a simple way to bring their
gambling portal sites and the world
of social networking together in a
virtuous circle of cross-promotion to
grow their revenue. Let’s take a look
at how to set it up.
To begin, create a simple presence
on Facebook by establishing an account and a group or fan page. Your
group or fan page should be named
similarly to your main portal site to
reinforce your brand and have a link
to your portal site.
Next install the “Places I’ve Played”
application – simply use the link
PlacesIvePlayed.com/install.
Try
out the application just like your
players might, but be sure to add the
major online gaming sites you promote and check the “recommended”
or “favorite” box for each of them.
Now you’re ready to put all the pieces
in place using the back-end webmas-
ter administrative interface by visiting
PlacesIvePlayed/webmaster. Specify
your affiliate relationships and associated affiliate tracking links as shown in
screen 4 on the next page. Associate
yourself with your Facebook account,
with your group or fan page, and with
your main portal site. Finally, use the
webmaster interface to create a campaign identifier and associated link for
player referrals.
Now everything is set for you to promote the “Places I’ve Played” application and earn more affiliate revenue.
The easiest way is to publish an article
on your website telling your players
how they can use the application to
share their online gaming experiences.
A sample article is available in the webmaster administrative interface. When
their friends follow your players’ links
to visit an online gambling site, the affiliate tracking codes you provided are
used.
And your players also promote your
brand to their friends when they use
“Places I’ve Played.” Screen 3 shows
an example of the webmaster group
“777 Online Gambling” being promoted from within the application.
With the “Places I’ve Played” application your players become your spokespeople. They tell their friends where

they play and they tell their friends about
you. You earn more gambling affiliate revenue and acquire more visitors to your portal
site using their social networks.
Why this will work
“Places I’ve Played” was conceived and designed specifically to take advantage of the
dynamics of social networking. As it evolves
and grows, it will become the go-to application for friends who want to share their gambling experiences. And sharing, of course, is
what it’s all about. To cite only one example,
“Cities I’ve Visited” – a slightly older Facebook application that is similar in several
ways to “Places I’ve Played” – now has 2 million monthly active users.
From a marketing standpoint, a friend’s “recommendation” is the best thing a business
can have. It’s more trusted and more effective than almost any other form of advertising. “Places I’ve Played” leverages this fact.
As players share information, they’re also
giving their blessing to many of the places
they’ve played, which in turn influences their
friends as they choose where they’re going to
play in the future.
GPWA Times | Page Title
With millions of users participating
in social networking sites – Facebook
alone has 100 million active users –
gambling portal webmasters will benefit from finding ways to utilize these
sites to help grow their businesses.
And we’re here to tell you that using
the “Places I’ve Played” application is a
solid good first step in that direction!

researching
natural antiviral proteins
is fun, too!
In your GPWA profile, it says
you used to be a scientist.
What kind of scientist were
you? I worked as an immunologist at Imperial College
London. My research was
aimed at improving bone marrow transplantation success
for childhood leukemia. Subsequently, I moved to a genetics lab in Newark, New Jersey
(at UMDNJ), where I undertook work researching newly
discovered, natural anti-viral
proteins. The work was great
fun, stimulating and varied,
involving laboratory work, lecturing, supervising students
and presenting at conferences
around the world.
How and why did you transition into investing in small
companies on the London
Stock Exchange? I’ve always
been interested in stocks and
shares, and about 8 years ago I
decided to learn how to invest
in the market as a spare-time
hobby. I hadn’t intended for it
to become my profession, but
in 2004 I caught mono (EBV
or glandular fever for those
in the U.K.), leaving me with
chronic fatigue. Eventually,
it became clear that I would
have to quit work to recover
properly. In order to keep
money coming in, my investment hobby became my fulltime job – I could work from
home and sleep whenever I
needed the rest. I’ve been able
to make a good living out of it
and have been investing full
time ever since.
What skills from your working as a scientist or investor
have helped you as an affiliate? Certainly one trait that
is required for science, investing, or affiliate work is having
patience and not expecting to
be able to conquer the world
straight away.
Another skill that is required
in both science and investing
is to be able to absorb a lot of
information from many different sources, piece it all togeth-
er and come up with your own
conclusions and theories. This
is true of the affiliate business, too. For example, if you
look at all the information on
SEO and SEM, with so many
conflicting ideas and philosophies, it can be overwhelming.
In the end, though, you have
to assess all that information
and come up with your own,
clear plan of action for the way
to take your business forward.
How did you become interested in the online gambling
industry and why did you decide to get involved in affiliate
marketing? I invest in a lot of
companies that are involved
in online marketing and some
that specialize in affiliate marketing. Originally, my main
aim was to get to understand
the business better so I could
better assess the investment
opportunities out there. I be-
gan by developing a shopping
portal, which didn’t get anywhere, as it didn’t really fire
my interest. However, I did
learn a lot of useful information from doing it. Later on,
when I discovered the slots in
Vegas I thought that this was a
subject I could get really interested in and so chose that as
the basis of my portals.
Your site focuses on marketing
online slots. Why online slots?
Do you play slots at brick-andmortar casinos? What’s your
favorite brick-and-mortar slot? Yes, I’ve loved slots since I
was a kid. I used to sneak
a few spins on a low-stakes
one-armed bandit in our local
sports and social club when
the adults weren’t looking. I
don’t play a great deal here in
London, because the payback
percentages are so low that

MARGARET BURKE | PKR Affiliates
PKR.com is unique in that it offers 3D software.
What went into the decision to offer this? The
original concept came from our founder, Jez San. A
keen poker player and veteran of the U.K. video games
industry, Jez wanted to develop an online version of
poker as close to the real game as possible – so he put
together the people to make it happen and PKR was
born. It’s a massive advantage to have something as
visually stunning as PKR is to stand out from the competition. There simply is nothing else like it, and in an
industry with a great deal of skins/white labels this is
invaluable in attracting both affiliates and players.
“There’s nothing out
there that can compete
with our industry,
which is proven by the
fact that people may
move around from
company to company,
but very few actually
leave the industry.”
Does 3D software help
with player conversion
and retention? Very much
so. Initially the appeal of our
software draws players in, but
the playability of our software
keeps them playing. On average, PKR players play longer
and more often than they
would at a standard online
poker room.
PKR offers its Web site in 10
different languages. How
much has this helped the
company grow? This has
helped our growth significantly. In opening up to
non-English speaking markets and assisting affiliates with their promotions, we are constantly adding
more languages.
Many of the testimonials on your Web site
speak of the “friendly nature” of your staff? Just
how friendly are you guys? Very! We try our best
to deal with all affiliates efficiently and appropriately
regardless of whether they are a big or small. We love
what we do and this is apparent in how we deal with
GPWA Times | Affiliate Manager Interview Series
all our affiliates and results in building strong, longlasting relationships with them.
How did you get started in online gaming?
What did you do before joining the industry?
I was living in Cyprus and I applied for a job in an
online marketing company which specialized in the
gaming industry, and the rest as they say is history.
Previous to this I was studying for a business degree
in London.
What would you change about your job – or
the industry – if you had the power to do so? I
wouldn’t change a thing about this industry. I love
it. I don’t think there’s anything out there that could
compete with our industry, which is proven by the
fact that many people may move around from company to company, but very few actually leave the industry.
Do you play poker yourself? Did you play online
before getting into the industry? I have to admit
(even though it’s common knowledge) I don’t play
poker, and while I know the rules I have never had
a great interest in the actual game – the business of
poker is my game!
If you were going to be stranded on a deserted
island by yourself for a month, what would you
bring with you (other than food and water)? Everyone who knows me would no doubt say vodka and
tonic, but I’d struggle to do without my Blackberry.
If you could change places with anybody for one
day, who would you choose and why? Hmmm,
this is a tricky one … I wouldn’t mind [Casino City’s]

A day in the life of an
affiliate manager
Spend a day with AffiliateClub.com’s Chris Taylor and find out how time management
plays a vital role in making sure a staff of remote workers runs smoothly and effectively
on a daily basis.
By Chris Taylor
Time
management plays a very
important part in an affiliate manager’s
job. Setting aside specific time slots for
certain aspects of the job is the key to
a routine, which is what we all need in
order to be efficient with our time.
As an AM in the gambling industry I
realize it is fast-paced and can be quite
hectic at times. Here’s a little insight
into how I manage my day and how I am
compulsive about the way I do things.
08:00:
After waking up, having
breakfast and getting ready for the day,
I check my Inbox/BlackBerry for any
urgent issues. If there are any, I will try
to deal with them right then and there
(i.e., send the issue off to the payments
team/poker team, etc). Just spending 10
minutes sifting through my Inbox gives
me a great idea of how my first few hours
of the day are going to pan out.
08:40
After dropping my
girlfriend off at work and returning
home, I get back to my PC to tackle the emails in my Inbox. Some require one-line
replies, some require my chasing another
person in our organization. All of these emails are dealt with within the hour so I
can avoid being crammed for time later
in the day.
09:30
I log on to MSN/Skype
and login to our affiliate program

backend. Typically, I have a few queries or
requests via the instant messaging tools,
which has become the main method of
communication for many affiliates. They
are usually dealt with as they come in
– and at the same time I am checking to

my affiliates have sent me a message via
the internal messaging system.
week, or if numbers have dropped, I’ll
try the previously posted banners for a
week and then compare. There are many
interpretations of what works and what
doesn’t, but tweaking banners here and
there will help build a picture of what
works for a particular Web site or target
audience.
At the same time, I am receiving e-mails
and instant messages from affiliates and
colleagues and I like to reply or forward
the e-mail to someone who can deal
with it right away. Allowing my Inbox to
build up will just lead to more time being
wasted in the end. I feel that you should
While doing this, I speak to my colleagues
(Claire, Nicole, Katerina and John)
about the pressing issues for the day.
For example, we may be uploading new
creatives, ideas for the monthly promotion
or dealing with payment issues. Speaking

their perspective of how effectively you
do your job.
10:30
Usually at this point of
the day I check the stats update from
the previous day. I run all the reports,
update our spreadsheets and send them
to the relevant people. I then run a report
based on the affiliates that I handle and
compare it to the previous days’ results.
My goal here is to identify trends in their
stats (e.g., to see if FTDs/revenue has
gone drastically up or down). Depending
on the results, I will contact the
corresponding affiliates to discuss ways
to maximize their efforts. For example, if
a new style of banner has generated an
increase in FTDs since the start of the

After all of the morning
madness is over, I look at our VIP
affiliates’ sites and statuses. I have already
seen their stats in the morning and may
have even already e-mailed them. I try
to spend the same amount of time with
everyone, but unfortunately that isn’t
possible. I have to segregate my affiliates
into different groups so I can check their
stats and speak to them in order. For
example, I will tackle a group of rakeback
affiliates in a two-hour window one day
during the week, hence helping my mind
solely focus on rakeback issues. I believe

GPWA Seal of Approval Program
GPWA Seal Program reaches 550 sites, 42 countries
“GPWA members understand the importance of
trust in building successful
relationships with their
players, other webmasters,
and their affiliate program
partners,” said GPWA
Program Manager Steven
Corfman. “This milestone
provides an opportunity to
celebrate the accomplishments achievable when
integrity is placed at the
center of our work.”
The GPWA Seal of Approval has been awarded
to 550 Web sites, with recipients located throughout 42 countries.
To communicate the high
review standards to site
visitors, each seal links
to a customized verification page that includes an
explanation of the criteria,
the name of the recipient
website, profiles of GPWA
members associated with
the site and details for
reporting violations to the
monitoring team.
The seal technology detects the default browser
language of each portal
visitor, returning both the
award and verification
page in the visitor’s chosen
language. The service also
verifies the approval status
of the portal, ensuring its
display only on approved
sites.
To apply for the Seal of
Approval, visit gpwa.org
or email your list of sites
to [email protected].
