Niagara. I’ll never walk backwards on an item. I’ll only make it better. When
we keep the quality high, starting with each and every ingredient, and keep the
food fresh and cooked to order it will be worth coming back for. That’s what
sets us apart from a typical fast food restaurant- the ingredients- no cutting
corners there, and nothing cooked ahead for convenience, everything made

The Silo has received several awards and accolades. One of the most notable
was when Adam Richman of The Travel Channel’s Man V. Food visited The
Silo in 2010. He recognized the menu as superior calling the Beef of Weck,
“Beef on Wonderful.” He also featured the customer’s favorite “Haystack” on
his television show calling it “The holy trinity of dude food!”
In the 30’s, The Silo and terminal were built as one complex to accommodate
passengers visiting by the thousands- all transferring from the Great Gorge
Railway and boarding steamers in Lewiston that would take them onward to
Toronto. The Lewiston Silo was home to the coal that fueled these steamers and
played an important role in housing the fuel that kept the waterfront alive. In
1938, most of the terminal was destroyed by a river ice jam. Soon after, it was
torn down while the abandoned Silo remained a fixture on The Waterfront.
In 1997, Mr. Richard Hastings of Youngstown approached the Village of
Lewiston trustees with a vision to convert the silo into a refreshment stand.
Using his own funds, he devised a plan, which included building a platform
that encircled the entire structure to create seating for his customers. The view
of the river from this vantage point was, and still is spectacular! 30 days later
Richard Hastings handed the keys over to his son, Alan, believing it was he
who had the energy, creativity, and foresight to take the refreshment stand to
new heights. I asked them who deserves the credit for the success of The Silo
today, and watched as they both grinned ear to ear while pointing to each other.
“It’s down to my dad – it was his vision – his idea,” said Alan Hastings smiling.
“I’m so glad he thought of the idea- you know? And so honored he trusted in
me to make it happen. I love my dad, I love this place, and I just want to keep
making him proud.”
Silo owner Alan Hastings is an environmentalist. He is dedicated to finding
inventive new ways to remove some of the burden that our fast paced culture is
placing on our planet. Knowing that recycling is one of the best ways we can
do this, he created tables, seating and countertops from recycled church pews
and chooses to use “Greenware”©- plant based cups, lids, and utensils to
lighten the load on our bulging landfills. He even uses the grease from his
fryer’s to power a fleet of gas-free vehicles known as Veggiecars! Even The
Silo itself, and the old train caboose now serving as the ice cream bar, have
been rescued, recycled, and repurposed!
