WHAT A DAY!

Firstly, to all the 200 young
entrepreneurs that took part
in McMinnville Lemonade Day
2016…you are an inspiration! Well done, no matter how far
you got in the program, well done. To those that I got to
visit on Saturday April 30th, or saw the amazing pictures of
even more amazing businesses, congratulations on taking
the risk.
Unlike different programs there are 4 specific stages where
a fledgling entrepreneur is successful in Lemonade Day and
each one of them is iconic to the path of entrepreneurialism:
1. Stage 1: Signed up, reviewed the workbook and time,
and decided it was not worth the investment of time and
energy. Nicely done! Every Entrepreneur goes through this
first step and just because you didn’t move on this time
doesn’t mean you won’t next time. It shows understanding
of how you value your time and ability, and an understanding
of purpose.

And that they now consider themselves part of an important
group of people. All successful people fall, their success
comes in how they respond to that fall.
4. Stage 4: Opened for business and met/exceeded
your goals. This place feels good! But the question is…
can it happen again? The reward is tangible, the lessons
are clearly marked, and they should be proud of the
accomplishment.
Read the biography of any leader or business person and
you will find a common theme. Failure is key to success
because failure is a tangible outcome to imagination and
risk. The core difference in the leaders who make a change
in their world versus those that don’t is the ability to try
again and again. That is why we can say that Lemonade Day
is a success in four different stages. Because each stage
teaches a unique and valuable lesson. Now, Community,
it is our responsibility to encourage them to do it again
in new and different ways. Maybe it will be a Lemonade
Stand again next year, or mowing lawns, or delivering fresh
picked flowers, or…frankly I don’t want to guess what the
next young entrepreneur will come up with because I’m
sure it will absolutely surpass my wildest expectations.
2. Stage 2: Signed up, did the work, decided at the end
not to open for business. It takes some foresight to realize
that the next step would not be worth it for them, whatever
the reason, takes some clear thought and reasoning skills.
Unfortunately, we can all think of a business that sounded
great, looked great when it opened, and for some reason
just didn’t work. To determine ahead of time that the
potential outcome was not worth the potential risk, and
to make the hard call with mentors and business partners,
shows a lot of maturity.
3. Stage 3: Opened for business, lost money by not
recouping costs to operate or possibly breaking even.
Probably the most painful experience immediately, but
in the long run will be the most rewarding. The young
entrepreneurs who experienced this stage will need
encouragement to get up and go again. It is really important
that they finish the workbook and proudly report their end
results, that they reflect on what they could have done
better and acknowledge that even the best laid plans will
not always be successful.

Conference
The Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Women's
Business Conference on Friday, May l3, 2016 at Chinook Winds.
The conference will showcase a panel of successful business
women who will share their paths to success, followed by our
luncheon speaker Jeanne Atkins, Oregon Secretary of State,
and the afternoon with four workshops on fraud, HR/employee
handbooks, how to use social media to grow your business, and
women's health. The day concludes with a fashion show and a
cocktail hour. The conference is meant to create networking
