November 2015
QUEENSTON SCHOOL
November is upon us and we have been extremely
busy for the last two months.
Teachers have completed the Mathematics and English
Language Arts sections of the divisional Elementary
Assessment Program (E.A.P.) and have a great
snapshot of where the individual students are in their
learning at this time. Because of the assessments
completed this year, teachers will continue
programming for each child to move them forward in
their learning. Report cards for the grade 1-6 students
will be sent home on November 17th.
The Nursery and Kindergarten Report cards will be
sent out in early December as many of the early years
assessments will not be ready until then. We will keep
you updated as to the exact date they will be sent
home.
We look forward to seeing all parents from nursery to
grade 6 at the Parent Teacher conferences held on
Thursday November 19th and Friday, November 20th.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place in
November and Tri Conferences will take place in
March.
Parents are invited to join us for the Remembrance
Day assembly being held on Tuesday, November 10th
beginning at 10:55 am. Mr. Kirkup’s room and the
Queenston School choir will be featured at the
assembly.
There are no classes on Friday, November 6th due to a
staff Assessment Professional Development day.
CELEBRATIONS
It has been a long time coming, but we are about to
embark on the celebration portion of the Queenston
School Sheilah Sweatman Gymnasium. We have two
separate celebrations in hopes of everyone being able
to celebrate with us.
The first date of Thursday, November 12, 2015 is the
Grand Opening presented by the Winnipeg School
Division Board of Trustees. This is a one hour
presentation, from 2:30-3:30 pm, hosted in the
gymnasium with all students present and performing for
the audience. There are a number of dignitaries and
special guests including Minister of Education and
Advanced Learning, James Allum and parents of Sheilah
Sweatman, Wynn and Teddi Sweatman. This will be a
fantastic media event, highlighting the efforts of a great
many people to have this facility finally open and
available for use.
The second date of Tuesday, November 24, 2015 called
the Community Celebration is being hosted by the
Queenston School Sheilah Sweatman Gymnasium
Committee. This is an evening event beginning at 6:00
pm with the formal presentations commencing at 6:30
pm. We would like to thank the local restaurants for
providing us with a taste of River Heights before formal
presentations. Each restaurant will be giving out samples
from their menu for all of us to enjoy. The Queenston
School choir will be performing, as well as guest speakers
including Wynn and Teddi Sweatman, parents of the
namesake to our new gymnasium, Sheilah Sweatman. The
rest of the evening will give the community and donors a
chance to visit other community members and donors, all
who made this dream possible.
This is an excellent facility, which will be enjoyed by the
present school and community members, as well as those
from generations to come. The community has waited a
long time for the project’s completion and both these
events will be a chance for everyone to celebrate with us.
The Province of Manitoba, the Public Schools Finance
Board, the Winnipeg School Division, Peter Sampson
Architecture Studio, Regent Construction and all others
involved are extremely proud of this new addition to our
school community.
On behalf of Queenston School, we hope to see all of you
at one or both of the celebrations,
